Some people are born to be heroes. But I was born a survivor.

When an otherworldly attack forces Olivia Blake to accept a harrowing new reality, her greatest weapon against those that haunt and hunt her is also her greatest curse. Her blood. Deadly yet intoxicating to the vampires who pursue her, day and night.

After a decade of hiding in the shadows, Olivia’s reclusive life starts to unravel when she’s taken captive by one who shouldn’t survive in her presence. But blood drinker Callahan Tilbrook has no need for Olivia — his mission has a far deadlier price.

When the bargain goes awry, Callahan and Olivia find themselves on two sides of the same terrible coin. With thousands of lives at stake, Olivia realises this is no longer just her secret to keep. And maybe it never was.

If Supernatural, X-Files and Resident Evil had a baby, they’d have this book 🙌🏻 I was not expecting to get what I got when I started this arc, but wow, was I incredibly pleasantly surprised! We got mysteries, conspiracy theories, legends and a swoon worthy romance 💕 The writing of this book is phenomenal, and it’s a debut author!!! I found myself sometimes looking at the percentage thingy not even realising I’ve read like 50 pages! The mystery shrouded plot is engrossing and kept me hooked from page 1. I laughed and cried (still can’t quite forgive you for that!😭) and found myself wanting to pick it back up when I put it down for the night, which is usually how I know a book is 5 stars for me 😂 The found family is glorious and I need a novel for each of them now please. The cherry on top is the crazy cliffhanger at the end that left me kind of reeling! In short this is an absolutely fabulous debut!

Loved the worldbuilding, the characters and the threads of mystery.
It has a dark and gritty feel, a complex plot, and a creative twist on vampires.
I liked the found family feel, the slow burn and spice, and the protectiveness of Callahan.
It has a great balance of romance and danger and action, and the ending leaves you wanting to know what happens next.

This is debut???? 😳 No way! The writing is fantastic! Very engaging, clever and creates an immersive reading experience. I was hooked from the first pages and couldn’t believe this was Annabella Lowe’s debut!!! 🙌🏼

Lowe’s first book in the Apex duology presents us with an interesting and unique take on vampires. Instead of being celebrated, they’re the monsters. This gave me some faint Blade vibes (it’s just me and my brain making leaps 😂), especially as towards the end of the book we discover that there is a mysterious someone or something plotting it all… 👀 I can’t wait to see where this is all going to take us in book two!!!

Many of you will know that one of my favourite tropes is that of a found family and I thought it was beautifully done here. Tilburys’ are a family I’d love to be a part of 🥹 I would have preferred a bit more of a slow burn between MCs but they make a cute couple nonetheless. Also, with a few hunky male characters, I’m sure everyone will find their fave 😜 I know whom I’m looking forward to seeing more of in book two!! #teamRory 😍

Find Me in the Shadows is coming out on 30th September and you can pre-order it for only £1.99 on Kindle so please please give this book a go! ❤️ It’s such an entertaining and thrilling read!!! 🙌🏼

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC copy for an honest review.

If you love urban fantasy and vampires then this is the book for you.

I really enjoyed Lowe’s unique take on vampires and the common myths around them. The science behind the different variant of vampires which we glimpse nearer the end of the book was really interesting and I’m curious to see how she develops this in the next instalment.

I loved the found family element of the book, however, I feel the relationship developed very quickly and I’d have loved a bit more of a slooooower burn. Despite this, I love Callahan and can’t wait to read more of him!

Overall, a great read that I couldn’t put down and would definitely recommend.

I‘m hooked. I’m hooked and I don’t mind it. Okay, maybe I mind it a little but only because I desperately want book 2!

From the very start of this story I loved the concept and didn’t want to put it down. I adore Olivia, she’s such a brave character despite calling herself a coward - if I were in her shoes, I’d be a goner, without a doubt. She deserves a whole lot better than what life has thrown at her in the past decade.

Then there’s Callahan... Oh boy oh boy, do I have a soft spot for this man. He is too pure and beautiful for this world, but not in a too-perfect-to-be-true way. He’s like a rare gem in a sea of rocks - not too perfect, not too flawed, just perfectly imperfect. The kind of character that feels so realistic which is what really draws me to him.

I love the supporting characters too. Callahan’s friends are wonderful and so supportive, they’re an absolute dream of a found family! Later in the book we’re introduced to a new group of people who are very important and from what we know of them, I like them a lot and I’m really interested in how their involvement in the books will progress.

I can’t say much about the characters I hate without giving too much away but GOOD LORDY... They are something. They are words I really shouldn’t include in a review.

Overall, I am simply obsessed with this book! The cliffhanger has me absolutely gagging for the next book already.

This was a fantastic debut by Annabella.
I love books that take the concept of vampires and add a twist to it. Within an urban fantasy it would be easy to just throw them into modern times with the classic beliefs but this one had a scientific take which I really enjoyed.

Olivia Blake discovers at a very young age that her blood is intoxicating and deadly to vampires after being attacked by one. She lives within the shadows in fear of being attacked again but is discovered by a blood drinker, Callahan Tilbrook, and is taken to his secluded hideout. There she learns the myth and legend she has become thanks to the power of her blood. And perhaps that this is no longer just her secret to keep. And maybe it never was.

This was an enjoyable read and perfect for the upcoming Fall season. I enjoy the found family trope which this one had so if you're a fan of that then you really want to check this out. The relationship between Olivia and Callahan was nice and it really felt like they were fated for each other!

Throughout the book I really wanted to see more of the vampire side and so towards the end I was happy we saw a bit more with that in Rakesh (who was my favorite character).

The ending was a delight because I just love twists like that and especially coming from a character you would not expect it from.
I will eagerly be awaiting the next book in the series since I need to know what will happen to Olivia!

Thanks to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

One star deducted purely for the omission or skimming of narrative details that made the action difficult to follow in the middle of the novel. Scenes took place without particular explanation or necessity.

4 wholehearted stars:

Immensely entertaining and exciting, I highly recommend it.

The concept of modern vampires is nothing new, yet Lowe makes it believable and relevant with seemingly little effort.

A heavy dash of horror, emotional depth and conviction, well thought-out fantasty, familiar and realistic dialogues.

The romance in the novel is beautiful and very authentically complex in the way the characters both rely on one another in childlike fear and adoration - I am very invested in their happily ever after!!!

The cliffhanger is as frustrating as it should be; revelations of the plot's mystery being revealed slowly and without pattern had me scrambling for explanations.

I am waiting with excited anticipation for the next novel to be released!

I raced through Find Me In The Shadows today! The story grabbed me right from the start and the mystery surrounding the vampires and how they were still unknown to the general population had me flipping through the pages for hints and answers. The ending was super strong and a great hook into book two! I have so many questions still!

The romance between Olivia and Callahan was SO sweet. I wasn't expecting Callahan to be so generally adorable and protective of Olivia, even from the start, and it was so satisfying to see Olivia find not just Callahan, but his friends as well.

My rating: 4.5/5⭐️

“I wished I could bottle these little moments, save them for the dark days, and drink them down like a fine wine when joy was lacking—the pessimist in me never quite willing to believe my luck would last.”

First off I want to give a massive thank you to @annabella.lowe.author for allowing me to read this ARC of her debut novel! The premise of this book was right up my alley, an urban fantasy with vampires 🧛🏻‍♀️ When I started reading I found a unique take on vampires, brilliant writing, wonderfully developed main and support characters, and a found family that made my heart happy ❤️‍🩹 I related to Olivia’s self-doubt in so many ways. Callahan is a precious MMC that needs protected at all costs! The cliffhanger ending had me anxiously reading the last few pages knowing there wasn’t going to be a resolution and that I’d have to wait until the next book to find out 😫 Please do pick this up when it is officially released at the end of next month - I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Edit Re-Read

I can't express how much this book feels like home and is such a comfort read for me now.

I love Olivia & Callahan, their journey is truly heartbreaking and I completely forgot how much trauma they have both been through to get to where they are. I still want to put Callahan in my pocket and keep him safe which is exactly how he feels about Olivia.

This is a complete unique take on vampirism which will have you hooked from the prologue and have your head in a spin with the epilogue. I really can't wait for the second installment to see where the mystery takes us.

I have upgraded from a 4* on my original read to a 5* .Originally I was expecting the spice to be a little higher / more sinful but on a second read knowing how sweet the romance is I really cannot fault it even after a year the character are still with me and Rory is still my favourite.

ORIGINAL REVIEW AUG 2024
I was privileged to receive an Arc Copy and enjoyed this book so much.

Wow what can I say about this book other than I need the 2nd book pronto!! Annabella you have done me dirty with that Epilogue. I did not see that twist a mile off and I need answers 😳

This book wasn't anything like I was expecting, it's a completely unique and different take on modern vampire mythology. Great if you love Vampires, Assassins, Found Family, Forced Proximity & Witty British Banter.

Instant attraction with adorable & cute romance that had me gushing for the MMC. Well written characters,Olivia, Callahan, Rory & Fletcher are just top notch👌🏼my favourites and my heart absolutely breaks for one of them I just want to hug them and keep them in my pocket.

A constant developing plot. I was on tender hooks from the beginning wondering where the story could lead and boy oh boy was I taken off guard by the ending.

I loved the little British anecdotes like how to make a proper cup of tea, it just made the book feel like home. Definitely reading this again and eagerly awaiting the next Installment...no rush Annabella 😜

Annabella Lowe has delivered an incredibly written debut novel with a refreshing take on classic tropes and an adoreable romance that you can't get enough of!

Find Me In The Shadows is best read whole with a fresh cup of hot tea. 🫖☕️
I absolutely devoured this book! For 2 days
I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down!
Incredibly honored to have had the opportunity to ARC read & review this book! 🖤 It very quickly became one of my favorite books this year.

An urban romance set in the U.K. with vampires and danger lurking behind every corner with a refreshing take on the typical blood lust vampire romances you are used to seeing.

Packed with action and adventure, the slow burn romance ignites the plot with just a little bit of spice. The perfect amount to keep you coming back for more.
Like having the perfect cup of coffee on a chilly frosted morning... not too hot, but perfect enough to feel the heat☕️

The fmc (24yr) Olivia and mmc (27yr) Callahan end up in a deliciously dangerous meet cute and forced proximity.
Olivia is a stubborn loner with a traumatic past, and abilities that are both a blessing and a curse. She's sweet and thoughtful, totally bff worthy, definitely relatable as character.

Callahan is the perfect book boyfriend. He's an adorable cinnamon roll, a farmer who doesn't mind getting dirty and is very protective of those around him. Definitely gives off the "touch her and d*e" vibes. He's not a huge talker but still always manages to say all the right things. Besides... actions speak louder than words, right? And he has no issues showing Olivia how he feels. 😉

These two are definitely the couple that have zero hesitation when it comes to the pda, but it works for them, and it's absolutely adorable. They just can't get enough of each other.
Plus, holding hands, tender forehead kisses, and boyish grins with pretty eyes are always a bonus. 😏

The found family here is the perfect group of bff material and all the little and older brother vibes. Kind and sweet, annoying, and protective. I adore Isla, Finn, Fletcher, and Rory. Would also like to add...I'd love to see Isla's bookstagram with all of her romance reads 🥰
The chemistry was there!
I felt like I was sitting at the large wooden dining table in a beautiful farmhouse with a mug of tea, listening to them all poke fun at each other like siblings and family do. ☕️

All the cutesy stuff aside... the danger and compelling mystery is still there, lurking behind every corner. With vampire attacks, emotions running wild,  blood lust, and heartbreak, it all gets heavy, and I shed a few tears right alongside the characters. 🥺
The cute romance and dangerous mystery plot were written beautifully together for one captivating story!

The cliffhanger at the end had me begging for the Callahan's POV, but it was perfectly done either way. I just can't imagine his dreaded fear and heartbreak after that surprise ending! 😲😱

I am so excited for Annabella and her debut. I can't wait to see where she takes the characters and story in book 2. I'll wait patiently, though. I know it will be worth it! I just can't get enough of Olivia and Callahan! 😌

Highly recommend to fantasy romance readers who also love a action packed mystery!

I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of Find Me in the Shadows by Annabella Lowe, and let me tell you, this book is a standout read that has quickly secured its spot as one of my top 5 favorite books of 2024!

The world-building in this novel is nothing short of phenomenal. Lowe has crafted a dark, immersive urban fantasy world where vampires of various intriguing variants roam, and Olivia Blake’s blood is both a powerful asset and a dangerous curse. The setting is rich and vividly drawn, pulling you into a universe where every detail adds to the story's intensity and allure.

Olivia herself is a fantastic protagonist. Her strength and vulnerability make her incredibly relatable and compelling, especially as she navigates her relationship with Callahan Tilbrook. Speaking of Callahan—he’s the perfect blend of sexy cowboy and tortured soul (rightfully so). The slow-burn romance between him and Olivia is handled with such finesse that it’ll have you eagerly flipping pages, craving every bit of their emotional journey. The supporting characters, are a delightful addition. They bring warmth and depth to the story, providing a perfect counterbalance to the darker themes and adding layers of complexity to the plot.

The villains are equally compelling, adding a sinister edge that heightens the stakes and makes Olivia’s fight all the more gripping. The cliffhanger at the end? It’s a breathtaking twist that will leave you desperate for the next installment. The mystery element is woven seamlessly into the narrative, keeping you guessing and on edge throughout.

It’s an unforgettable read that deserves a top spot on any fantasy lover’s shelf. If you’re a fan of richly crafted worlds, intense romances, and thrilling mysteries, this book is an absolute must-read. You won’t be disappointed!

Review:
What an original take on vampire-like humans in this urban fantasy mystery!

In our modern world, vampire beings are attracted to unique blood that Olivia, our FMC, has. She learns the hard way in an assault when she's 14 that her blood attracts but also immediately k1lls them. Ten years later, it's wreaked havoc with her social life, pinning her with gnawing fear of further encounters. She then meets Callahan, who shares some of the same characteristics as vampires but retains humanity and can live off animal bl00d. They join forces in finding a way to weaponize her gifts safely but external forces make an ugly appearance that threatens everything they thought they knew about this fantastical element in the world.

This reminded me of the earlier season of The Walking Dead... where it's quite character driven, with detailed aftermath scenes from brisk action encounters with the vampires. We take time to see the effect the fallout, loss and battles have on both Callahan and Olivia, as well as the found family we stick with in this story. Both our leads have fantastic chemistry and I especially give credit to how grief is dealt with in the intimate moments. And I really dug this offshoot version of vampires.

I'm very excited to learn more about the specifics and mechanics of how these "sibling" variations of vampires relate to one another and why they are different. We get a larger conspiracy theory-esque plot twist in towards the cliffhanger ending. I'm definitely down for the sequel and seeing where this heads, as I really love this couple and unique spin!

“We can be ‘not okay’ together…”

Find Me in the Shadow by Annabella Lowe is undoubtedly a great read.

Olivia is just trying to get through her day to day and not be attacked by these vampires that are obsessed with her. As long as she sticks to the routine of her cage then things will be fine, right? Nope! Not with over 400 pages taking her on a rollercoaster of thrills, chills, and laughter.

Oliva and the family she finds along the ride are amazing and I really do love them all. Not only is the overall story so captivating, but it has one of the best found families I have seen in recent books. I want to add another of my favorite lines from it: ‘For ten years this girl has endured the absolute sh!t show that is her life without anyone to shoulder it with her.’ Not only did she feel seen, I felt seen as well even as the reader. Thank you for that.

With only 30-20% left of the book I started picturing all the twists that might be thrown at me, causing me not to trust anyone. Despite that, I did not see the ending coming.

Annabella Lowe weaves moments of suspense, quiet, as well swooning perfectly. A wonderful debut book. I am standing by, ready to devour the next book on its release.

I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to ARC read this debut novel by Annabella Lowe and I loved it - it kept me reading the pages long past bedtime.

It's been a while since I read a supernatural book but I loved the new take on the mythology, the way the story unfolds and that the author had the ability to keep me guessing what was coming next.

The opening prologue lands the reader right in the middle of intense drama, setting the tone for the rest of the book as well as the tone for Olivia's life.

There is plenty of drama and mystery in all chapters. The characters are all well rounded and their relationships feel authentic. The chemistry between the main characters sizzled on the page.

There are little breadcrumbs in the chapters that keep me thinking and hooked, and a conclusion that left me wondering when the next instalment will be out, eager to find out what happens next.

Overall, a very well written, twisty and intriguing story, one I'm looking forward to seeing unfold in the next instalment.

Where to start with this - I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for Anna and was absorbed in this story from page one.

It’s a unique take on Vampires with so many twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat and squealing. I’m a big fan of found family and enemies to lovers - Anna did both exceptionally. I completely fell in love with the characters. Olivia and Callahan have that perfect slow-burn tension that makes you want to read that little bit longer into the night to see if they’ll finally give in to one another.

Naturally, Fletcher, the moody mysterious man became my book boyfriend pretty much right off the bat and Rory has the sweetest golden retriever energy!

The writing is wonderful, the pace is perfect and I cannot wait to read the next instalment of this duology (hurry up Anna, but also no pressure!) Cliffhanger that had me nearly SCREAMING.

I love this, so so much - it’s so hard to believe it’s a debut novel!

There is not a single bad thing I have to say about this book 😍 I thoroughly enjoyed it, from the moment I picked it up, I was obsessed!
Literally, I cannot wait for the next book, because I NEED to know what happens!

I related to the characters so much and Olivia is just amazing! An expressive face, loves coffee and books. And she's a badass even though she thinks she's a coward. She's not, she has a strength that she forgets to see.

And the side characters.. literally ALL the side characters were amazingly described, and felt so real and relatable.

The romance was slow-burn, but to me it didn't feel it. The way she wrote it made the bond between Olivia and Callahan feel way more real. She built it up perfectly. Heck, even I fell for Callahan 😂

And the writing and storytelling was so on point, that I cannot believe this is Annabella's debut novel, and I am so blessed and grateful to have read it for her 😍

MASSIVE 5 STARS from me!

(ARC Review)

What a debut!! This book had me hooked from its opening pages and hungry for more at its closing! Annabella Lowe has done a seriously good job of creating a uniquely urbanised profile of vampirism with interesting and nuanced vampire lore - twisting the classic vampire legend on it’s head, altogether making the subject more accessible and relatable in its origins.

We follow our protagonist Olivia Blake as she navigates her life guarding a secret that both saves and condemns her; her blood is deadly. In a world where vampires exist hidden from society, Olivia finds that they are inexplicably drawn to her, exposure to her blood resulting in a quick and gruesome death. She spends her days reclusively, doing everything she can to mask her scent and avoid interactions with these creatures, knowing that her presence sends them into a trance-like feeding frenzy.
That is until she finds herself in a hostage situation; taken by a man who resembles the creatures she fears, but who can mysteriously survive in her presence. An exchange must be made, and Olivia must learn who she can and cannot trust.

The writing style is so descriptive and immersive, the characters so well fleshed out, that I couldn’t give this anything less than five stars. For a relatively short book, it’s certainly packed with a lot of backstory and world building, which provides the reader with enough information to take with them as the plot progresses without it being overwhelming. The pacing was perfect, the timeline of events flowed effortlessly between plot points, and character relationships were not rushed and developed authentically. I’m usually pretty good at predicting how a story will progress, but the twists and turns kept me guessing!

What an impressive start to the Apex Duology!! I cannot wait for book two!

I absolutely loved this fresh and original take on the beloved vampire genre! Whenever I pick up a book with aspects of horror, monsters, and fantasy, I'm always drawn to how the author highlights humanity. Find Me in the Shadows is a beautiful exploration of the human condition in an urban fantasy setting.

Grief, trauma, found family, healing, living life over mere survival, these are the themes explored in this gritty, and at times even cozy, dark fantasy. Character driven, and even in the darkest moments holding onto that pulse of hope, Find Me in the Shadows is a must read for fans of the dark fantasy genre! A book readers will love to sink their teeth into!

I loved this original take on an urban vampire story and how we learned more about the intricacies of this world alongside our FMC Olivia.

Olivia was really relatable and the Lowe’s clever use of a prologue helps the reader to connect with her and empathise with her loneliness and craving for meaningful relationships.

Callahan’s questionable motives make him somewhat of an enigma when we first meet him and I enjoyed the unconventional beginning to their relationship and how it progressed throughout the story.

There is an element of mystery to this tale that keeps you guessing and helps to maintain a strong pace throughout. Lowe also exceeds at creating tension during the action scenes and twists I didn’t see coming!

A huge thank you to the author for providing me with this brilliant ARC!

Olivia has to spend her life in solitude to keep her secret while also keeping people safe. Tired of being alone she decides to have a night out surrounded by people only to be captured by the one thing she’s been avoiding, a vampire. During her capture she meets others who know her secret and finally starts to get answers that she’s been searching for most of her life. I really liked reading about the connections Olivia forms with Callahan, Isla and Fletcher. I felt for Olivia and how lonely she felt for the majority of her life, it was nice to see her making connections and finding her own version of a family. The ending absolutely shocked me and I just need to know what happens next so I’ll definitely be waiting for the next release!

If you're craving an urban fantasy with a fresh twist on vampires, this debut is a must-read! The moment I read the synopsis, I was drawn in, and I immediately signed up for the ARC—and it did not disappoint.

The author offers a unique spin on the classic vampire tale that kept me hooked from start to finish.

The characters are engaging, and Rory absolutely stole the show for me! His playful teasing of Callahan and Olivia added a fun dynamic to their relationship, which was both heartwarming and well-paced. I found myself rooting for them as a couple throughout the book.

The writing style is engaging and vivid, immersing readers into Olivia's world of danger and survival. And that ending? It left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.

Overall, this is a fantastic debut that stands out in the urban fantasy genre. If you haven't picked it up yet, don't wait any longer—it's already available and well worth your time!

4.25 stars!

If you are having Twilight 20th anniversary nostalgia, but want to read something that is actually well-written and doesn't feature sparkly vampires and adolescents, this might just be the book for you.

This story is well-crafted and builds its foundation on societally and scientifically sinister happenings. The way the secret that forms the foundation for the nature and existence of the characters unfolds over the book built suspense, but also didn't leave the storyline totally unresolved (as this is Book 1 in a duology).

If you like an urban fantasy with a unique twist on vampires (with science vibes!), found family, and a protective yet gentle male main character, this is the book for you.

I will be reading the second book in the duology.

An unintentional vampire slayer & a blood drinking human walk in to a bar… now that’s a good story. I enjoyed it, caught me in the beginning & reeled me in. Thoroughly kept me entertained with Olivia navigating her life as carefully as possible. Even though (for me) some parts dragged a lot were intense and emotional and I liked that! I will warn this book ends in a cliff hanger which totally bummed me out. If you like an unconventional vampire hunter story this one is definitely for you!

What a unique plot set in the modern world of UK.

We start with action right away where our Olivia is attacked. I felt for her from the beginning her mom not believing her and just being left to do life alone. Once she meets Callahan their story unfolds so nicely. She comes from a broken family while he is the complete opposite.

The plot is easy to follow and is very unique. You get vampires, blood drinkers, assasins, and humans. All this leads to conflict which unfolds throughout the book.

The romance builds very slow and both have had their fair share of experience so neither are innocent per say. They find eachother in a broken world which is very sweet. Theres dirty talk and teasing which i loved but no major open door scenes. The spice level you get is definitely more steam.

The found family is great and their banter hilarious. Isla, Fletcher, Rory, and Finn ugh loved them all.

Theres not a ton of world building since its ser in modern times.

The ending was insane and left it on a huge cliffhanger at the end which left me mouth open. Cannot wait to find out how the story wraps up in book 2.

I had the good fortune of reading this book just after it was published. I didn't know what to expect. It was the author's first book and the genre (horror/romance) was not my sort of thing at all. Despite these misgivings I loved this book, I found it a really compelling read with characters who you really want to root for. And wow, what a great ending. Look forward to book two!

This is one of those reads where you're mad you finished it before the second book is released. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!

This is the perfect mix of romance, action, plot twists, emotion, heartbreak and fantasy. I couldn't put it down!

This book has so many great elements!! I loved the intrigue, the characters, the action, the romance and the friendships formed.
And the cliffhanger of an ending was so good!!! I cannot wait to find out how Olivia’s story will unravel.
