The Daezh killed her father and marked her for death. Now Nadhya, a water mage from the small town of Lyria, must quietly assimilate into her new home of Allov, where the air is thick with the cult-worship of these transdimensional murderers.
Fate brings her to three supernaturally adept allies—a quick and witty swordsman, a broody archer with unerring aim, and a dashing electromancer with a healing touch—each harbouring deep scars inflicted by her enemies.
Banding together in their quest for vengeance, they enlist the aid of a wily wizard, and Nadhya plunges into a deep rabbit-hole of enigmas that she can’t easily crawl out of. After a rare encounter with a mysterious entity, and uncovering the darkness festering at the heart of the city, will Nadhya get her revenge, or will it all come apart at the seams?
This book was an amazing read ❤️ i enjoyed it so much 😌 The elemental magic is very fascinating for me 🔥 The story started very slowly at first but as the storyline progressed It became more and more interesting to me the mystery element keeps me hooked up perfectly All the characters are well written . As a first book in the series the story is amazing The author weaves the perfect mysterious and magical world it felt like i was standing right there opening the portal and summoning dragons with the characters 🥰❤️ the introduction to the characters and the world building are very well written. The writer creates the perfect foundation for the story 😍 The book does end on the cliffhanger 😬 ( And i am dying to read the next book in the series) Definitely going to read the second book in the series 📚 I do feel like there is less action in this book i hope i get more in the book 2☺️ I enjoyed the book so much 😍 if you love fantasy, magic and unique world setting and mystery you are going to enjoy it 😍 highly recommend it❤️
I’ll admit, the tropes were what tempted me to apply for the ARC, and I’m so glad I did! The story was really interesting. While the first few chapters were a bit hard to follow, it picked up quickly after that. The writing style and world-building were easy to grasp. I typically have issues with FMCs, and Nadheera was a bit hard to connect with at times—she felt like a pushover. Hopefully, she gets better character development in the next book. I really enjoyed the unique elemental magic system. It’s been a while since I’ve read anything with cult vibes, and this was perfect for spooky season. That ending caught me off guard, and I’m excited to see what happens next!
Easily one of the most well crafted stories I have had the chance to read. The author draws you in with the diverse and charming cast! Each character has their own carefully crafted personality, no two people are the same!!! There was never a point where I thought the story was dragging but it also never felt rushed. Each word felt like an important piece of the overall puzzle. Also, Wade is a dream and an absolute hottie, I’m claiming him. Overall, this book is definitely something I will be rereading soon!
If I could use only one word to describe how I feel about April Sun's Brace the Tide, Book 1 in her Redemption series, it would be "WOW". Simple as that. April has written a story that will grab you and never let you go. A story with such deep & intricate world-building, rich lore & history, and above all, with masterfully crafted characters. April's story has got it all.
Who might this book (and series) be perfect for? First and foremost, for all of us who truly enjoy high fantasy stories with layered characters, intriguing plots with a dash of mystery, vast history, mesmerizing magic systems, and a beautiful and gripping writing style. Let us not forget a dash of slow-burn romance that will surely explode in future books. Just a perfect fantasy mixture, trust me.
Honestly, I devoured this book, and I am making it my life's mission to make more people aware of it. The Redemption series deserves all the hype it can get.
You will love every part of this utterly captivating story. You will love Nadhya, the FMC, a girl slowly emerging from her overprotective shell and starting her road to greatness. She has only begun, and I am rooting for her. You will love, no, you will adore Jay, the MMC. He is the epitome of a golden retriever MMC. But don't be fooled by his kind demeanour; he is a force to be reckoned with. The same goes for the other members of their inner circle; everyone has so many layers just waiting to be peeled off (I am looking mainly at you two, Takoda and Xavier).
So many mysteries to solve and secrets to uncover. So many feelings waiting to burst. So much action just waiting to happen. And it is all there, in April's series, waiting for you.
Nadhya isn't quite sure how she's meant to live amongst people who idolize the creatures who killed her father. Speaking out against the Daezh at all could result in her own death. But Nadhya soon realizes that she isn't alone in her hatred. With her new friends by her side, each with their own supernatural gift, Nadhya's chance at revenge may be closer than she imagined.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I enjoyed this first novel of the Redemption series. Nadhya's situation - minus the supernatural elements - is pretty relatable for many. She's forced to move with her mother to a new place that is very unlike the one she grew up in. She's meeting new people and isn't quite sure who she can trust. Even her thought processes throughout the narration seem like those of a typical teenager. It makes for an enjoyable read.
The descriptions of the Daezh and what they do to those they kill is pretty eerie - I'm a fan! 😂
While Brace the Tide isn't a fast-paced novel, it also doesn't drag on, with Nadhya and her friends frequently finding themselves in new situations or problems to overcome.
📖 Nadhya's father was killed by a Daezh when she was just an infant. All her life she's been ruthlessly trained in combative magic, for various reasons. Now she's in a foreign land, Allov, that worships Daezh as gods - the beings that Nadhya hates with a burning passion and has been trained to eliminate. However, the law doesn't allow her to so much as speak slightly negatively about Daezh. Allov is a beautiful land, and the more beautiful people she meets the more she realizes that everyone there is. In a city full of nothing but beautiful people, Nadhya feels like something more may be going on. With things tense at home and only her new, seemingly Daezh-loving friends to talk to, who can she trust? What's really going on?
I had such a great time with this masterfully woven high fantasy-mystery-romance. It grabbed me early on and didn't let go. I can't wait for Book 2.
It does end on a cliffhanger, with book 2 releasing in the first half of 2025.
✍️🏼 Beautifully written with rich, almost lyrical descriptions, this was a joy to read. Writing richly, nearing lyrical, cN be a tight line to avoid crossing into purple, but Sun managed it nicely.
I loved the dialogue, it read as natural and felt like it fit the characters.
⏳️The pacing is great. With all the world building that comes with a well built epic fantasy, did feel a tiny bit on the slower side early on. I would always choose that over little to no world building, though. With mystery and action, there isn't a lot of downtime otherwise.
🗺 Intricately built and layered in a unique world full of lore - it's exactly what I want in a fantasy.
🔮 I loved the elemental magic system and enjoyed Sun's spin on it. With clear costs as well as advantages and disadvantages of the various forms of magic, this system is intricately designed and well explained.
👥 I cannot express how much I loved the characters, and beyond appreciate the diversity in the cast. If you're a character focused reader, you'll eat this up. They're nuanced and dimensional with interesting backstories.
As a white person with mostly straight hair, I'm not the most knowledgeable with protective hairstyles (or hair in general, really), but from what I do know the rep for protective hairstyles seems to be great in this book.
💞 The burn is deliciously slow (just how I prefer 😄). To me it felt like friends to lovers, as it showed the relationship go from strangers to friendly to more. I love that Sun shows us that, it made it feel more realistic and easy for me to connect with and care about their relationship.
📚 If you like: Legendborn (Tracy Deonn), This Poison Heart (Kalynn Baron), The Gilded Ones (Namina Forna), or Ace of Spades (Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé) then I think you would enjoy Brace the Tide.
Thank you to @avril.n.sun for the opportunity to read the eARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is something new to me. I like the magic elements like water, air, speed, healing, knowing someone's past and everything. The storyline is good. But there is a small amount of romance. I like books which holds tension between the MMC and FMC. But in this book there is no tension. If it had some moments like that then it would be a 4⭐️ read for me. And tbh sometimes I find the words complicate. Other than that if you like Pure Fantacy then you can definitely try this🤍 you'll like it more than me🫶🏻 MY RATING: 3.75⭐️
This book read like a DnD campaign and I was there for it.
You got magic, you „collect“ your band of friends, you have your villains that present as being of beings that bring good to the world, you have great world building that sucks you in, side characters that you root for (fingers crossed for auntie), side characters that are kinda grey (big side eye for that cousin), you have magical amulets, a budding romance, portals, runes, cute little sidekicks….
And then the end…it leaves you wanting for more! And guess what! It is just the first book! So you will get more!
The story did start off a but slow, but the pace kicked up as we went along. The elemental magic is pretty interesting as well! We had a really great world building style. As well as diverse and interesting characters!
We follow Nadhya, who is a mage. She and her mother moved, and the town she happens to live in now seems to idolize beings that killed her father, but she has to keep that all a secret. Speaking ill of the Daezh can get one killed. Nadhya learns that she isn't alone in this hatred, though, as she starts meeting new friends. They new friends each have their own powers but it isn't the same as her.
Nadhya feels like a pretty relatable character. Moving to a new town, that's is nothing like your own town. Having a mother that's very controlling to try to keep her safe but an aunt that wants to help her live a normal life. Meeting a bunch of new people and not knowing who you can and can't trust.
The cliffhanger had me biting my nails... I NEEEEEED book 2 asap!!
I did receive this as an ARC, and this is my honest review. Thank you so much, Avril, for this amazing book and opportunity!!
This books was phenomenal!! I loved every second of it, Avril N. Sun builds a beautiful world full of magic and mystery that keeps you hooked from the very beginning. Nadhya a water mage from Lyria moves with her mother to take care of her sick aunt. They move to Allov a beautiful place where everything seems perfect, at least on the surface but this place holds many dark secrets that she slowly uncovers. Nadhya tries to blend in and make friends not expecting to find that some of them have similar scars in their past and hold the same hated for the things that caused her own. Follow her on this adventure trying to defy the odds stacked against her and her newfound friends.
There was just enough mystery to have you wanting more, packed full of adventure, and a friends to lovers romance that will have you giggling and kicking your feet.(at least I was)
Hurry up and get your hands on this book before the second one comes out in a couple weeks. I can not wait to read Prevail the Tide!
This book has a fascinating magic system and a unique world that feels both real and distinctly separate from our own. The twists and turns you accompany Nadhya on during her journey are all thrilling to follow and the answers only lead to more question. I couldn’t get enough!
I was so excited reading this. A lot of things captured my attention, the magic, the powers, the way Nadhya was written that i could relate to as a teenager. I'm glad that I signed up for the ARC. I can't wait to read the next book 🥹
Brace the Tide is beautifully written and 100% had my attention! There's a cute romance in here, and very interesting characters! I loved the world and the cultish vibes that are in Allov, along with the many magical beings they are put throughout this world. The world building is beautiful. This book will keep you intrigued, I swear it! People are missing out on this beautiful book so please check it out ❤️
This book is so good I don’t even know where to start. Fantasy enthusiasts, this is for you. You’re gonna love the plot, world building, and characters. The cast is diverse, which is refreshing and original. The settings are described so vividly that you feel like you are there with the characters and wish you too had magic! It is full of intrigue and is definitely a page turner. I CANNOT wait for book 2.
Found Family – fabulous vibes! Friends to Lovers – absolutely delightful! Slow Burn – so delicious! Plot Twists – so great! Formidable Foe – formidable and very shudder worthy! Cult Vibes – that will 100% leave you quaking! Mystery – enchantment and more!
Tease and banter that will keep you page turning!
Avril’s Brace the Tide is one of the most visually stunning reads I can recall. This book transports you from your fingertips to your toes; not just with the incredible sights you’ll see but the senses! Smells that will waft from the pages and draw you in with soft fabrics gracing your skin and the stern sound of Ma scolding your tardiness. Everything about this story is enticing. It will warm your heart and keep you yearning! With a group of unique and diverse characters – and at the centre? The lovely, stubborn, adventure seeking Nadhya who cares for her family as deeply as her new found friends.
Brace the Tide is like a painting, a tapestry, a glorious work of art that you cannot but wish to step into and fold about yourself; just to experience it as if you too were plodding along after Lumie as she lights the way.
Be prepared to devour this read at breakneck speed and wait with baited breath for book 2: Prevail the Tide, coming in 2025! I can’t wait!

TROPES:- 🌊slow burn 🌊Cult vibes 🌊High fantasy 🌊 Friends to lovers 🌊 Found family 🌊 Elemental magic My rating:- ⭐⭐⭐⭐
📜Nadhya, a young water mage from small town lyria, has recently moved to allov for her dear aunt, even though the very land of allov worships Daezh, the vicious creatures that took the life of Nadhya's father and marked her to be a walking prey when she was just an infant . Because of her past, Nadhya's been confined mostly at home and trained vigorously for her safety by her mother. Allov has just became the change in her confined life,New people,New place and New allies. But what lies behind the facade of this beautiful blessed city may be some brutal ugly sacrifices . Nadhya soon finds herself getting deeper into the dark waters of mystery of allov with her new companions, harbouring the same grudge towards daezh as her. What lies ahead maybe an adventure of a lifetime for nadhya, which might turns out more dangerous for her life. Can she be able to brace the tide?
Brace the tide by Avril. N.sun is book 1 in the redemption series. Avril has conjured up a world of magic with her words in such a way that you will find yourself a part of that world,in between the pages with characters, experiencing every twist and turn. In depth and flowy descriptions that pulls you deep into the narrative surrounded by the mystery that keep you hooked and guessing is appealing and intriguing. Though the starting is pretty slow, once you dive into the middle of it , you'll want to keep reading. It's filled with terrific mystery and vile cult vibes . When I finished it ,all I could think was how good it would be as a fantasy tv series.
The characters are hyper realistic. Our fmc ,nadhya, is very relatable. She's the perfect example of a strong character with feminine qualities. There were times when I cringed inwardly at her decisions then Another times I found myself rooting for her. She's a perfectly woven character with layers which comes off as we dig deep. Not just her, All the characters felt very natural, they are not overpowered or overdramatic. They react very realistically to their predicaments which gave depth to their character and personality.
Another thing I really loved about this book is it's character's relationships and Age. The fmc and MMC are not hormonal teenagers, they are adults and pretty mature, the lack of smut actually made their connection more pure and swoon worthy . Their interactions made me begging for more , which were few and I really felt the burn of slow romance in this one. Jaython, our MMC is not just a green flag but a whole green forest 💚 He was a breath of fresh air in MMC of Fantasy genre . He's kind and lovable, which made me love him even more ( Naddy's got good taste😏)
Other than romance, the platonic relations were beautifully portrayed and explained. Nadhya's relationship and interactions with her family and familiars really warmed my heart . I loved wade, joachim, her aunty, mother and even takoda (except for Xavier at the end😅 reasons are valid if ykyk). Their bond turned out stronger than I thought it would be. Jaython at the end won my heart but AAH. That ending. I can't wait to find out more about jay and Naddy's fate! It ends on a cliffhanger and Naddy's fate continues in the next book of the series. Brace the tide has got everything that a fantasy reader would love , it's got Elemental magic ,Witches, Wizards,Warlocks,Dragons, Familiars,Grimoires,Curses ,Runes,Gods and dark creatures threatening to devour everything.
Overall an amazing perfect 4⭐ read to make you experience a magical world , if you love all these tropes then this one is for You!
Welcome to Geeros. Immerse yourself in a world of monsters and mayhem, magic and mystery, danger and deception! It's not often that I find books that surprise me, but this one did… I didn't know how the story was going to play out at all! It's very much worth reading, and I can't wait to pick up her next book! I loved the unique blend of cultural and ethnic influence woven into the story and descriptions of clothing, decor/colors, character names, and even the spices and foods mentioned in the story. The religious and spiritual questions touched on, as well as the mythology of Kieram’s tears, were so poignant and emotional, I was immediately drawn in. I love the debate of spiritual questions regarding the afterlife, reincarnation, and the origin of the Daezh. The apparent mirroring of elements from H.P. Lovecraft was a welcome addition, with elements of the Daezh clearly being modeled after Cthulhu. The descriptions of its appearance and actions were haunting and stuck with me for days!

Following the charismatic and impulsive Naddy though her adventure has been the highlight of an already glowing story for me. I've read it several times, often coming back to it when I need a little light on those gloomy days. We move fluidly through events and characters as they span an complex and layered plot, interwoven with character interactions so real I could all but feel the characters breath.
This is a story of self-discovery and self-reliance, and perseverance. I've had the absolute privilege of reading this book before release and I can whole heartedly recommend this to anyone with a love of fantasy with well crafted magic systems, great characters voice and a swirling mystery with deceit, lies and a character brave, smart and resilient enough to take on a darkness greater than herself for those she loves.
What can I say about Prevail the Tide that I didn’t say about Brace the Tide? Once again, we’re along with Naddy for an incredible adventure. We pick up right where book 1 left off, with all the gasps and gravitas that comes with. Watching Naddy come to terms with all the changes around her, and how she deals with them feels so human and so relatable. There is spine chilling terror, heart thumping romance and adrenalin fueled action! It’s everything that adventure should be!
We see some old faces, like my hated Captain UTI, and fall further in love with some hunky men and I will leap into this world to protect Auntie! The tension never ends with a certain dark winged boy and I love every moment of it.
I had the delight and privilege of being involved in the pre-publication process of this book and I cannot recommend it enough! I will wait with baited breath to see what becomes of my darling Naddy in the next one.
I had the pleasure of ARC reading for Avril's debut and was NOT disappointed!
Stepping into a new fantasy is so thrilling for me. This new magical world was well developed along with tasty characters. The detail shown to the world and character building was balanced well. Not too overwhelming and just enough to keep me vividly engaged.
Nadhya, our FMC, is fierce and determined. I was hooked in her journey for revenge, which led me to grow into loving her. This is a slow burn romantasy. I love the direction the plot is taking us. AND I LOVE WADE!!! 🫠 But there are still QUESTIONS I NEED ANSWERED 😆 So you know. I'll just be silently stalking for book 2.
A great and entertaining new Romantasy for you here, folks!
The characters are nuanced and layered but you don't feel dragged down as you learn them and the lore of the fantasy world they live in. I loved that for a large chunk of it, you are learning alongside the main character Nadhya.
I realized with dismay as I inched closer and closer to the end, that there was no way I was going to get all my answers in only one book! So I will impatiently wait for the second.
The magic system was fantastic. I loved Sophie and Auntie and I cannot wait to see what Naddy and her band of boys get up to next.
I greatly enjoyed Avril’s excellent writing as one is quickly drawn into the fantastical world of her creating. Avril shares a world full of a new culture (for me) that is fascinating. Her style of writing is realistic. I even felt the turbulence the FMC and MMCs suffered as the story intensified. I must add, there are scenes of graphic violence so I would have appreciated trigger warnings. It’s an interesting story that leaves you on the edge of your seat. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses in book two.
The pace may start slow but it quickly picks up and that slow start is exactly what you need to digest this amazing world that has been so lovingly built for us. Book 1 of this series and I can say I'm hooked can not wait to get my hands on book 2 because that cliff hanger was everything. An amazing story with magic and fighting, family and friendship, love and war
I have read this amazing fantasy book over the Christmas holidays and I encourage everyone to get a copy of it because it is really good. 🤩
The world building is incredible and there are just a few books where I know what exactly the world is looking like. The magic system is quite unique and it takes a bit of time until you start getting the idea of it. The story itself grabs you and you dip yourself into it with the only wish to read more.
The characters are incredible - they are created with a thought and you will fall in love in each and every one of them. I want to know more of their journey and see more of their well written interactions.
This is a slow burn, friends to lovers, with mages, magic, mystery… 😍
The thing I love about this book is that the FMC - Nadhya, is not a pathetic, insecure teenager. She is amazing young woman, who is trying to figure the situation out. She is down to earth and clicks fast with the rest of the group. There is no whining and self doubt and I can’t get enough of that 🤩.
The character that I felt the most for is the MMC - Jaythan. There is something about him that makes him so lovable 😌
I rarely am so invested in a book but Brace the Tide is something that you need to read this year. I will definitely need to read the second book like yesterday 🥰
I enjoyed the world building and characters in this novel so much that I slowed down and really savoured every word of Brace the Tide.
If you enjoy fantasy this book is definitely for you! Nadhya is a strong female protagonist who gives the reader lots to cheer for. Seriously I would follow her into fire!
Nadhya and a group of friends she meets in Allov decide to take matters into their own hands to find out what is going on with the Daezh, and how they might possibly be able to send them back where they came from.
What a wicked cliffhanger! Thank goodness for the teaser for the next book in the series! I cannot wait to read Prevail the Tide!
