Lucas Alexander, the ninth Duke of Arlington, is a man who gets what he wants. So when he sees the alluring Miss Pippa Welby from across a crowded ballroom, he vows to make her his. But the bold and spirited Pippa has sworn never to marry into the haute ton. Now Lucas must win her the only way he knows how—one wicked kiss at a time.
The daughter of a wealthy tradesman, Pippa has been sneered at by the upper echelons her entire life. So when the duke arrives on her doorstep with an invitation to her own engagement ball—to him—in ten days, Pippa hatches a daring plan. She must lose the duke before the ball, or risk losing her own heart.
Kate writes Regency and Fantasy Romance. When she's not staring at her screen, dreaming up delicious heroes, she's a wife, mother and part-time assistant.
First time reading this author and won't be my last.
Like the heroine Pippa and hero Lucas. Good character development for such a short book. Enjoyed the back and forth between the two, chemistry was very good and the sex scenes hot but done with feeling (which I really prefer).
Plot was engaging and well developed for again such a short book. Would have really like more !!!!
When Lucas, the Duke of Arlington, visits Pippa with an unexpected marriage announcement, she all but throws the proposal back on his face. Pippa, the daughter of a wealthy tradesman, has always been snubbed by the haute ton, and has decided never to marry into the snobbish ton. So what’s a girl to do to dissuade a very handsome and irresistible duke, especially when she herself is really attracted to him?
The story plot was a little predictable for me, but the writing style gives a refreshing touch to it. The characters are very likeable. Pippa’s strong and straightforward attitude, and Lucas’ controlling and dominating nature cause explosive reactions in both of them every time they are together. Lucas’ reaction, when he was first introduced to Pippa, can only be described as adorable. Although, it was due to that same reaction that all the turmoil between them started. His extravagant ways of wooing Pippa and her equally devious ploys to thwart his advances makes for an engaging story. I confess that I have a weak spot for the heroes in pursuit theme, and Lucas makes for a delectable hero-in-pursuit.
My thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
A historical romance novella heavy on the sex but not very sexy, actually. It was very abrupt without much tension: the novella format likely didn’t help. Also! No Scotland on page which makes the title a bit silly.
I got this as a kindle freebie, but I would recommend just giving it a pass.
I'm torn after reading this one. There were parts that I genuinely liked and others that I hated. I thought the start of How To Lose A Duke In Ten Days was very interesting and I was intrigued by both Lucas and Pippa. I most enjoyed the parts when intimate details were revealed about them and I was given insight into why they each behaved the way they did. Initially, I liked the love/hate thing Lucas and Pippa had going as well as the sexual tension between them. However, by page sixty I grew tired of reading the same scene and I was bored of their teasing. And it's not that I expected them to jump into bed immediately, I just would have preferred some variety in their encounters with each other. EACH time Lucas came in contact with Pippa he ran his finger across her bottom lip and trailed her jaw to the column of her neck down to the swell of her breasts. The only variant in those scenes was whether he used his finger or his lips. And each time desire pulsed through Pippa's veins or she was inflamed with passion.
Redundancy was actually an issue I had throughout the book. I didn't understand why I was constantly being reminded that Pippa had green eyes, red hair, and rose-petal pink lips or that Lucas's eyes were crystal blue and his reason for wanting to marry Pippa was because of her father's coal mines. Seriously, how many times can it be stated before it becomes insulting to the reader's intelligence? I would've rather learned something new about them than being told the same thing over and over.
My experience reading How To Lose A Duke In Ten Days was very up and down. I'd totally be engrossed in a scene, connecting with the characters and then be jarred from it by something not quite believable . . . like the language, for example. At certain times I felt thrust into that time period because of the word usage and then just as quickly I was pulled out of it by phrases I just don't think would've been used back then.
Another time that I felt yanked out of the moment was during Lucas's and Pippa's love scene. First, it was the dialogue. Nothing kills the mood quicker for me than for a couple to just be about to do the deed and one or both of them says something crazy or really unromantic. So there was Pippa with her channel all ready and her sex folds wet and then Lucas, right before he entered her said, "There will be pain." Seriously?! And then her response was, "I know, and I'm ready." I had really been into the scene but that threw ice water on it, for me. Second, was the sex scene itself. And I know this it totally a personal issue, but it's extremely difficult for me to accept that a virgin just knows what to do the first time out and has the most magnificent, glorious, orgasmic experience. I'm sorry, I know this is fiction and I'm supposed to do away with reality and just enjoy the story but that's really hard for me to believe especially when a few scenes before that Pippa didn't know how to initiate a kiss with Lucas.
The Evelyn/Crawford storyline seemed sort of thrown in so I didn't have much connection to or interest in it. Therefore, the ending didn't entice me to want to read what happens with those two. Anyway, as I stated before, this was an up and down read for me but there was more of it that I liked and I feel comfortable giving it three stars.

How to lose a Duke in Ten Days by Kate McKinley (What Happens in Scotland #1) is a 2014 publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Pippa had met Lucas , The Duke of Arlington, previously and he had embarrassed her publicly. She never wanted to lay eyes on him again. So, to her utmost dismay when her father sends for her she finds none other than the Duke of Arlington in conference with her father. It seems that Lucas wants to marry Pippa. Well, Pippa is having none of it. She doesn't care for the haute' ton and refuses to accept the proposal. Instead of causing a scandal, Pippa decides to scare the Duke away. I loved the concept behind this short story/novella. It sounded like it would be a lot of fun and in some ways it was. Pippa knew just what to do to get under Lucas's skin and well, Lucas got in a few good ones as well. Pippa doesn't deny an attraction to Lucas but she doesn't like the aristocrasy. When she discovers that Lucas has been keeping something from her, she feels betrayed enough to send him out of her life for good. Can Lucas convince her he really loves her? For me this one fell a little flat. First of all I really don't care for certain language in my regency historical romances. It is just not authentic. First of all a gentleman would never use those words in front a lady and many ladies didn't even know those words- publicly or privately. That is a personal lament on my part and anyone that follows my reviews will hear this complaint from me from time to time. The other thing that really got to me was the purple prose. I haven't read a novel since the 1990's with this type of prose. I was in stiches and I don't think the author intended it to be funny. Then the explanation from Pippa's father was what? I went back to the beginning of the book and then re-read the last two chapters to see if I could understand what was going on. The independent lady in the beginning of the book would never have agreed to marry a man who had used her to line his own pockets . Then she suddenly forgives him and her greedy father, because no man is ever perfect. I think a little begging would have to happen and Lucas didn't even have to grovel, even a little bit. I felt it was out of character for Pippa to forgive so suddenly and easily. I never warmed up to Lucas after I found out what his original plans were and I never liked how demanding he was. I think the book was enjoyable if you stick to the pranks Pippa played on Lucas. Otherwise it was a little inconsistant. Overall this one is a C- (or 2 stars)
None of this tale happens in Scotland so the series title is confusing. A young woman from a background of trade is seen as useful by a duke whose father was too easily led to part with money to help others. His coffers are low and the wealthy miss will inherit a large coal mine, which he foresees will be valuable. However she decides not to marry someone who just wants her money.
This story contains many pages of the girl declaring that the man is insufferable, arrogant etc and getting kissed and sexually assaulted by him as he hopes to 'win her over' in ten days. Only for the rather sustained and unlikely adult behaviour and strong language it would be similar to a Georgette Heyer story. We can understand hormones running high and so on, but ladies, if a man is constantly groping you it does not mean he loves you. This man comes across as a bully who abuses his higher social status and has no respect for his intended.
The author also uses terms she has picked up but does not understand. For instance the heroine learns that when her father dies his coal mine 'will revert to her'. The term revert means to go back. For this to happen, the mine would need to have previously been in the girl's ownership and she signed it over to her father until his death. Instead, when her father dies, she will inherit the mine.
There's a nice side plot which is to lead us into the next book in the series, the first chapter being provided; this begins at Gretna Green.
Ok, that's it. No more novellas for me. Everything just happens all so fast and I just can't buy a true love story that happens neatly in 100'ish pages. This particular story... it was odd. They met for the first time as they are introduced at a ball. He is of the ton and she is a wealthy merchants daughter. Supposedly this hero was so tongue-tied while being introduced to her, he was afraid to say something humiliating so he just turned around and walked away. Which of course causes a scene as it looked liked he was giving her the cut-direct. Fast forward a year or two (I think it was that long) and he suddenly wants to marry her. She is opposed to it of course because of how he embarrassed her that day. But she's secretly harbored a thing for him (?). Anyway, the whole story is the heroine acting like a child, trying to get the engagement broken. It was ridiculous really, I didn't like the heroine at all, and was indifferent to the hero.
I absolutely loved How to Lose A Duke in Ten Days.
Miss Pippa Welby is the daughter of Wealthy Coal Miner. Because she comes from a family in Trade she has been horribly treated by the Ton. Now she hates the Ton and the Aristocracy. Pippa's father wants in with the Haute Ton. So he plots to marry her off to a titled gentlemen.
Lucas Alexander the 9th Duke of Arlington had cut Pippa at a ball. But what she didn't really understand was that he was so taken with her beauty that he was stumped for words. One year later Lucas walks into Pippa home and announces they will be married in ten days. He invites her to come to their betrothal ball. He never ask her to marry him he just tells her.
Wow did Pippa blow a fuse. She is determined to get rid of the Duke in the 10 days she has before the ball.
This is a fast paced, funny at times and sensual and a tad erotic at times. I really enjoyed reading Pippa and Lucas's story
Get ready for Pippa, headstrong, creative, and far too independent and beautiful for the shallow likes of the Ton, in spite of her father’s wealth, because she has “tradesman blood” in her veins. Often painfully snubbed, Pippa has no plans to find a “suitable match” and become the property of some rich buffoon, especially not the arrogant, presumptuous and demanding likes of Lucas Alexander, the Ninth Duke of Arlington. When the duke announces to Pippa that she is to become his wife, she becomes determined to prove him wrong, all while playing the game he has started. Has Lucas put all of his cards on the table, or is the deck one card short of the truth of his proposal? Used to always forging ahead to get what he wants, Pippa shows him a side of her that breaks down his resistance to all matters of the heart when he discovers she is as strong-willed as he.
As Pippa’s determination not to be charmed by this man wavers, they both discover a missing link in their lives, but Pippa discovers the lie and realizes even her own father has deceived her, so how does she choose between honor, revenge and her heart? Will she be the one that got away for the duke?
How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days by Kate McKinley may not perfectly re-create the dialogue of the era, but she has nailed the attitude and callous nature of the Ton, perfectly. I, for one, felt I was taken back, and was looking at the “real” people of the times. Pippa is most definitely the star, her well-defined personality and her edgy sense of timing and humorous deviousness lends for many delightful moments. Even her vulnerability is endearing, because clearly she hides her fear and insecurity well. The duke, from the start, was a heartless cad, whose greed led him to strike a deal with Pippa’s father, who thankfully never made much of an appearance. His transformation as the tale progressed was apparent as Pippa woke feelings long forgotten in his soul. Of course, we knew how the story would end, we want that ending, it’s the journey that makes the story and this was a great trip, thanks to the guidance of Kate McKinley.

I loved this book, I loved this book, I LOVED THIS BOOK! But I mostly loved Lucas, "Miss Welby's priorities are perfectly understandable," be said lazily, as though her blunt dismissal hadn't offended him in the least. He flicked his gaze in her father's direction. "Leave us, Welby. I'd like to speak with your daughter alone." I mean the boy is just cocky, "you astonish me, Miss Welby. I would have thought the reason was quite clear." He leaned down and placed a hand on each armrest, caging her in. For a brief moment, it felt as though all the air had been sucked from the room. She could scarcely draw in a breath. Her heart fluttered at his nearness, but she didn't lean back. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction. "I want you in my bed, of course." I mean the boy only has one thing on his mind, "Lucas swept his gaze over the gaggle of maids once more. "Let's discuss this in a more private setting." In his bed, their naked bodies tangled in the sheets, perhaps." I mean I think it's so cute how he needs to teach Pippa some things: He took her hand and placed it on his falls. "Do you feel that?" She swallowed and nodded, curling her fingers around him through the fabric of his breeches. He was hard, like iron, and thick. "Yes." "It needs to be inside you," he said matter-of-factly. He also has no qualms is stating what he wants to do, "I want to come inside you, Pippa," he whispered in her ear. The warmth of her breath brushed against his cheek, and he nearly lost control. "I want to give you my children. Would you like that?" I really did love Pippa and Lucas.
love this story.... How to Loose a Duke in Ten Days is one of the stories in the box set named Scandalous Summer Nights which has seven stories by different authors.
This story by Kate McKinley is about Lucas Alexander, the ninth Duke of Arlington, a man who gets what he wants when he wants it and no one says no to him. So when he sees the alluring Miss Pippa Welby from across a crowded ballroom, he vows to make her his. But the bold and spirited Pippa has sworn never to marry into the haute ton because of their petty prejudices' on class and people in general. Now Lucas must win her the only way he knows how—one wicked kiss at a time. Miss Pippa Welby is the daughter of wealthy tradesman. Lucas comes to ask Pippa to marry him. She doesn't want to (because she doesn't want to join the ton where she has been looked down upon because of her class). Lucas gives her an invitation to their engagement ball in 10 days. He swears to win her; she swears to lose him. Poor Pippa try's very hard to throw water on the Duke's strong attraction, in one instance she finds he hates dogs so while he is away on business she fills his London town house with stray dogs. Of course this battle stops when she finds herself equally drawn to him.
This is book one of a series yet to be published. I can not wait for book two. I feel these will be stand alone stories and not cliff hangers. Strong story, dialog is natural and spontaneous with very likeable characters add a sensual level I would grade as an 8, hot and sizzling, what more could I want as a romance reader. Highly recommend this story....and I hope Ms. McKinley publishes book two soon.
I was looking around on Goodreads.com for a book to read and I seen a lot of people on my list of friends had "How to lose a duke in 10 days" added to their list. I went to Kate Mckinley page an seen she was "looking for people to review her book" so i signed up and got a copy. Let me tell you yes I received a free copy from the publisher/author in exchange for an honest review so I'll give it.
This was a short book about 109 pages but what it lacked in length it made up for in quality and steaminess!!! I really enjoyed this book and I will be checking out more from Mrs. Mckinley.
Lets start So you got The Duke of Arlington (Lucas) who walks in to Miss Pippa Welby father's study and "tells" her they will be married. Well Pippa has more backbone then to just fall at his feet just cause he's a Duke, plus he already cut her a couple of months ago at a ball. This is their story of how they get their HEA . It Tells how ruthless the duke is in pursuing her and how relentless she his to lose him.
I really loved this book plus at the end it gives you a taste of Lucas sister story and how she has run away to Gretna Green to marry a bastard son of an Earl.
First off, Scotland isn’t mentioned until the very last page. So that’s weird for a series with Scotland in the title.
Also this cover is gorgeous and very sexy. The book as a whole was super hot. The characters were very horny and had great chemistry. That worked completely for me.
But there were a few things that didn’t work nearly as well. The hero was infuriating for the first half. There are competing explanations for why he so desperately wants to marry the heroine, but it doesn’t add up to a compelling reason for him to be such a prick.
And then the climax was just all off. The argument and separation actually worked well! Believable conflict, and the entry to Pippa finding out about Lucas’s plotting was good. But then the next scenes are all from his perspective! We don’t get to see Pippa’s reasoning or journey to forgiveness. We just see her furious, then horny, then mad again, and then cut to her forgiving him (more or less). It just doesn’t work. At all. I just don’t believe that she worked past that betrayal and that they’ll be happy together.
Plus the epilogue is just a blatant setup to the sequel, not actually a proper ending for their story.

The author furnished me with a complimentary copy of this read in exchange for an honest review.
Trade heiress Pippa Welby is surprised when she is summoned to her father's study and then left alone with Lucas Alexander, ninth Duke of Arlington. The most sought after bachelor in London. As if that were not enough for a morning, Pippa is stunned when she's presented with an invitation to his engagement ball! His engagement is to her! The ball is in ten days!
The delightful lead characters, Lucas and Pippa, both leapt from the page fully developed. Pippa's desire to not be grist or grinder for the Ton's rumor mill was refreshing and helped set this story apart from the usual peer reads. Pippa was strong, funny and independent, a perfect foil for the equally strong, wry and arrogant Lucas in their battle of wills. Pippa's antics to derail the betrothal, Lucas' reaction and their scenes together guaranteed a smile. As their feelings for each other deepen, both Lucas and Pippa have to re-examine both their motives and their approach to the betrothal. The threads for Lucas' sister. Evelyn, and the introduction of cousin Matthias were diverting and complete but brief as this novella was definitely showcasing Lucas & Pippa's star turns.
While I liked the cover fine, I didn't like it for this read. In my opinion, the clothing didn't seem to fit the story within. Also, the secondary characters work well in a novella but seem thin for an origin story. Finally, the brief interaction with the secondary characters and the wrap of abbreviated storylines at the end had a rushed feel. Now for the good. Having never read this author, I had no expectations but enjoyed the writing style. Both Lucas and Pippa were very charming and had a bit of chemistry. The steamy intimacy scenes fit in the placement and were well done. For my taste the lead characters, rapid pacing and flow of the storyline were all good things, they were clear, consistent and engaging. While this origin story was self contained, some threads were loose enough to revisit as part of a series. Overall, I enjoyed this light fast paced novella that could easily be devoured in one sitting.
After being snubbed at a ball six months prior, Miss Pippa Wellby awakens to find the object of her public snubbing with her tradesman father in his library. When Pippa is told by the arrogant Duke of Arlington that he is there with the intent on being married to Pippa, she is taken aback. Surely he must be jesting, for all those months ago when she was so eager to meet Lucas Alexander, instead of engaging her in conversation, he turned and walked away from her, leaving Pippa to deal with the public aftermath.
Lucas Alexander was intrigued with Pippa Welby from the get-go, but she is also the offspring of a wealthy tradesman father who will be willing his daughter a very coveted coal mine. So which is the impetus for this marriage? Lucas wants her, and he believes that just because he wants her, he deserves to have her. So determined is he, that when Pippa throws up her arms in disgust at the situation, he hands her an invitation to her own engagement ball. Oh I truly love his cockiness.
Pippa thought she was able to push her initial feelings aside for the handsome Duke, but when faced with him again all of those feelings of want flood right back and she fights an inner battle with whether to give in or resist. His kisses throw her off balance, they instill a need in Pippa that she never knew could exist. The Duke's stubborn and arrogant attitude, however, could be his downfall if he doesn't open his eyes and see what's before him.
HOW TO LOSE A DUKE IN TEN DAYS by Kate McKinley is a thrillingly exasperating tale. I loved both Pippa's and Lucas' characters. They both had endearing as well as infuriating qualities. As a huge fan of the alpha male, Lucas is a delight to me, especially when this man takes over in the bedroom. Kate McKinley's intimate scenes sizzle with the ingenue and the alpha and as a new reader to her work, I am adding Ms. McKinley to my TBR pile now. Have a peek at the short and sizzling HOW TO LOSE A DUKE IN TEN DAYS by Kate McKinley, you won't be sorry!
I received this book from the author and the I Love Alpha Males group in exchange for a honest review.
My thoughts: This was a wonderful historical romance. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the ending seemed kind of rushed. I think when the heroine finds out the truth the hero should have groveled a little. All of a sudden the heroine forgives him and everything is fine. The conversations between the hero and the heroine were hilarious.
The Heroine: I liked how feisty she was. She never backed down from what she thought was right.
The Hero: He was your typical cold aristocrat. You could understand from his background why he was that way. I loved how he was ensnared by the heroine. He did not know how to deal with it at first.
The Story: Miss Pippa Wilby(heroine) is summoned to her father's study. When she arrives, a gentleman is there. It is none other than Lucas Victor Alexander, ninth duke of Arlington. Last year at the Tisdale Ball, he humiliated her by slighting her in front of everyone. Unbeknownst to her, he was so besotted by her he just froze up. So, he walked away before he said something stupid. He has wanted her ever since. She is told she is now engaged to him. He also has brought with him an invitation to their engagement ball. Needless to say, she is infuriated and refuses him. She unwittingly issues a challenge to him and he accepts. He has to convince her to marry him.
The rest of the book is a battle of wills between the hero and heroine leading to their HEA.
Overall, an enjoyable historical romance filled with witty banter.
Great , well moving story with strong likable characters, and some great seduction and sex scenes!
Pippa is the only child of a successful tradesman who owns one of the biggest coal mines in England in a time when coal is becoming an important commodity. She smart, Beautiful , Vibrant and full of life . However despite wealth and all her attributes she is still looked down on by the Haute Ton,to spite her fathers aspirations for her to become a member she has vowed to never marry into the ,opus, arrogant ton!
Enter , The duke of Arlington , Lucas Alexander; Pippa had the ourtunity to be introduced to him at the Tinsdale ball several months ago and he gave her the cut, so she believes. To spite her beliefs and her determination to have nothing to do with the ton, she has just spent the last six months thinking about him . Imagine her surprise when sheis called to her fathers office to find the very same man she thinks of as the empitome of the Ton, arrogant, demanding and full of himself and there to see her! Lucas is determined to wed Pippa, it is the only way to achieve his goals . The question is who is going to be in charge? How to convince a women as strong willed as Pippa to agree to marriage? How to learn to deal with the new feelings she arouses in him?
I absolutely could not put this down ,read this book in no time at all, what a great read!
WARNING: Have many fire extinguishers handy when reading this!! Lucas Alexander, the Duke of Arlington, is powerful, rich, titled and KNOWS he can get anything or anyone he wants. He wants Pippa as his wife!! There is one small problem Pippa does NOT want him. Pippa's father is in TRADE and she hates the ton. She has lived with all the cruelty of the ton because she is not one of them. Lucas COMMANDS her to wed him and walks out of her home. Pippa is shocked and can't believe that this DUKE thinks he can CONTROL her. She only has 10 days until their engagement ball to get rid of him. Lucas demands and commands her world with kisses and seduction. Pippa fights back with hat pins, a bad wardrobe and even a flocks of chaperones, Ms. McKinley writes in one of my favorite styles, with humor and hilarious situations that suck you into the story!! There are super hot carriage rides, up against the wall sizzling scenes and an adorable pug. I have to give her my top score of 5 fingers up and 10 toes. My only complaint is I wish it was longer!!
The first book in Kate McKinley’s newest novella series, What Happens in Scotland. I very much enjoyed her entertaining, provocative, and erotic historical debut series, By Invitation Only, I knew I would love this, too.
Miss Pippa Welby is the proud daughter of a very successful coal mining magnate who is commandeered—in cahoots with her father—into a betrothal to Lucas, the powerful and handsome—natch—Duke of Arlington. Indeed, when they first meet, he slights her—much like Mr. Darcy slighted Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Lucas is used to getting whatever he wants whenever he wants it but he hadn’t counted on the willful Pippa. She detests the aristocracy ever since they belittled and bullied her when she was a student at a London finishing school. She determines to make herself so repellent to him that he will break the engagement, so she comes up with some crazy schemes with her oldest friend, Charles Hurst. Instead, Lucas finds Pippa refreshingly different and decides to wear down her resistance with seduction and an outrageous public courtship.
How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days is an excellent historical romance novella. If you want a fast read that will make you smile and laugh along with falling in love with the characters, this is a book for you.
The Duke, Lucas is very controlling, which gets explained later on in the book, I fell in love with him from the get go, he knew what he wanted and he made sure he got it. Pippa, is a very determined women, she comes up with some clever ways to try and get rid of Lucas, I enjoyed reading about her latest idea to make him not want her, I laughed and smiled a lot.
The plot was very well thought out and it flowed nicely from beginning to end, the book was just a great fun read, I don't wanna say to much and give it all away, I will just end with if you love historical romances, and fun quick reads, this is a book to dive into for sure.
*I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review
OMG, I loved it, so Damn good. This book was so well written, the plot was rich in details and so much fun to read it. I could relate myself with Lucas' feelings, he loved his control and what he built for himself, when he fell in love with Pippa he saw all his control going down, was the kind of love strong and built with time. Pippa, on the other hand, grew up in every chapter and was really pretty to see how she surrendered for what she wanted, and the seduction parts??? Dear God, so damn perfect. Is a five star book to me!! I just wished more pages *--* I couldn't have loved more.
So many others have reviewed this as I think this deserved, I'll just hit why I gave it the 2 stars. First the only part I really enjoyed was Pippa's revenge while Lucas was gone. I burst out laughing out loud.
That said, it was the only part I enjoyed. The language Lucas used (even in his own mind), was not appropriate to the era. In addition, Pippa had no spine whatsoever! I had hopes early on, but I lost all respect for her. Finally, Lucas should have been made to really, really grovel!
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the story but there were too many instances where Lucas toed the line between consent and force and it really made me side eye him a couple times. I mean . Overall tho, I enjoyed the story and might look into the book after this one about Evelyn.
Pippa Welby, the daughter of a wealthy coal merchant, has just been invited to her own engagement ball by a duke who's never shown any interest in her. Lucas Alexander, the Duke of Arlington, is accustomed to getting what he wants, and what he wants is Miss Pippa Welby. Why Lucas wanted her wasn't clear to me. Seeing a pretty face at a ball isn't reason enough to pursue someone the way he went after Pippa. He wasn't even acquainted with her! His presumptuous behavior resembled the actions of a mad man. With the engagement ball less than two weeks away, Pippa has ten days to make the persistent, arrogant duke lose interest in her.
Among the many problems I had with this story were the mixed signals the heroine kept giving the hero. Me thinks the lady doth protest too much! Pippa played hard-to-get for most of the book, but she clearly wanted Lucas. I find coy women silly and annoying. If she didn't want to marry him, she could have said, "No!" and ignored him. There was no need to try to make him not like her or to go out with him.
This series is called "What Happens in Scotland," but this book takes place in London. I don't understand that.
I apparently have been craving spicy historical romances, and this short read just hit the spot.
Pippa wants nothing to do with Lucas, Duke of Arlington, but the man who had given her the cut direct just a few months before apparently believes they are to be engaged. She is determined to do all she can to change his mind about their engagement, but the more she tries to drive him away, the more she finds herself drawing closer to him..on her own accord.
I really enjoyed this novella, but it was a different take on historical romance. Pippa is a tradesman's daughter who really had little to zero chance of getting a respectable member of the ton for a husband, but here comes Lucas who is more progressive-minded than his peers. His father and his past have something to do with his shrewdness and lack of tolerance for nonsense, and that seems to fit with Pippa's want for more independence and less scrutiny. I love how Lucas' assertiveness to gain Pippa's attention and affection never wavers, but it has subtle changes as his motives shift from business to something more genuine.
If you are looking for a quick spicy read, this is a great pick, because the tension between these two hit the ground running from the first chapter and kept going until the epilogue.
