"Invocation is a brilliantly crafted, action-packed romantasy thriller you won't be able to put down." - Erin Michelle Sky, Author SAMANTHA I never thought I'd willingly walk into Hell again, but I did. I survived and am back where I belong—at home. But Gabe, my demon-dead friend, is still missing. And the guilt is crippling me. While I'm laughing and happy with my boyfriend, Gabe is suffering. While I'm resting and healing, Gabe is being endlessly tortured. But every plan I come up with is a suicide mission. And despite what it sometimes looks like, I'm not ready to die. So, when my werewolf friends ask me to help their pack with a problem, there's no way I can say no—even if I'm not ready to jump into another fight. There's a mysterious evil the werewolves can't track, and they need me to help them kill it. It's the perfect distraction. The only problem? Phoenix, a mortal, wants to go with me. Even though he's proven he can handle the supernatural, I can't help but think nothing good can come from him getting an even better glimpse of how not normal my work life is. But I can't say no to him; all I can do is pray Phoenix is still by my side when this is over. PHOENIX My life pre-Samantha was turmoil. Soccer career, over. Family life, devastated after the loss of my grandmother. Dating? Laughable. Every relationship fell apart because the door in my heart had been shut tight. I was unknowingly holding out for the one girl who had completely changed my world. Samantha is it for me; my heart knew it before I did. I'd go anywhere as long as it's with her. But her guardian angel, Eli, said something to me that makes me think something truly terrible will happen to Samantha. And I'm not about to let that happen. I'll do anything to keep her safe. "I absolutely loved this book, it blew my mind…I laughed, I cried, I swooned…it's a heartfelt epic adventure! - Sheila Kay, Author AUTHOR The Days of Iron & Clay is a spin-off the Alpha Girls Series, but can be fully enjoyed alone and is best enjoyed in order! Infestation picks up right where Invocation left off. Be sure to read Invocation first!
Aileen Erin is half-Irish, half-Mexican and 100% nerd-from Star Wars (prequels don’t count) to Star Trek (TNG FTW), she reads Quenya and some Sindarin, and has a severe fascination with the supernatural. Aileen has a BS in Radio-TV-Film from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. She lives with her husband, daughter, and mischievous mini bernedoodle in Texas, and spends her days doing her favorite things: reading books, creating worlds, and kicking ass.
Another fast paced action packed addition to the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, and this was no different. You are thrown right back into the drama and chaos of the supernatural life, with demon attacks, possessions, portals, and more life threatening danger. This time Sam has some extra help thanks to her new bond to Nix, a bond that he is terrified to tell her about for fear of rejection given their sudden reconnection. I love that the worldbuilding in the first book sets you up to expect demon chaos and the lingering threat of Sam's insane father, but it still adds new layers of danger, new creepy monsters, and deadly battles for them to fight. I loved that we got to see more of Nix's POV, and I loved how caring and committed he was. He has such a willingness to drop everything for Sam and he is the protector she needs. He's picked up on her habits, tells, and flaws of pushing herself too far, but he is determined to be there whatever comes. I also love the whole wolf pack vibe, Eli the guardian angel, and Frank the unexpected witty priest, they are collectively a perfect found family. I enjoyed the development of romance in this one too even amongst all the conflict, and you can sense things are heating up for more confrontation, so it was sweet to see Sam and Nix still have their own moments to progress too. There is still lots of mystery to be explored, looking forward to book 3!

*Thoughts*
Infestation is the second installment in author Aileen Erin's Days of Iron and Clay series. The story follows Samantha Lopez, who is not exactly human but something else—a Nephilim. Samantha just happens to be the daughter of a human and a fallen angel named Astaroth, who is willing to do anything to get his wayward daughter back in hell, where he thinks she belongs. He is willing to do anything to have her submit to him. As the story opens, Sam feels the effects of nearly being caught by Astaroth after she rescued a fey warrior named Van. Now, her undead friend Gabe is paying the price for her escape.
I honestly couldn't wait for book 2 and let me tell you even from the forst two chapters, I knew I was not going to be disappointed. The dangers start hitting straight away and everything felt more ramped up this time. Now I've read it all, I can not wait for the next installment. The only difference this time round is Samantha has her anchor.
Plot
I am absolutely loving the plot and this book was IMHO better than the 1st. The danger is so much more. The first book essentially is setting the background for everything that has happened to Sam in her life and how she ended up at the Santuary and how her anchoring to earth happened. So let me tell you that now all that is in place book 2 smashed it out the park. The drama, the love, the found family, not to mention the deamons racking up in the amount of danger and the loss and appearence of the path as we learn more about the in-depth for Samantha. I have to say tho, I feel like we are missing out on Pheonix history and I'm hoping for more on him and his past in book 3.
Characters
Okay so shall we get into all the characters and my absolute obsession with them, well apart from Astrorath, he's just nope, down in the portals you certainly belong! Samantha - Well she is absolutely holding her own and is a powerful, determined and strong FMC and you would need to be with the dangers just living gives her. Pheonix (Nix) - He's a golden retriever of a MMC but a right push over for Sam, I love his dedication to her and wanting to understand everything and how she faces life, he's hidden skills make the book ending that much more powerful and hitting as well. Eli - Ah the angel, no Archon! ahh nothing more dreamy than a light angel blinding you when he appears in his shirt, shorts and lacking any footwear. The banter he has is amazing, always making light in the dark situations. Frank - He had me absolutely howling at the cringy things he come out with! That being said he is a massive part of Sam and who she is and how she works and the bantering between them is also something that gives the plot that much extra depth. The Werewolves - They just all collectively are the upmost caring, found family and support Sam through everything.
Can you tell just how obsessed I am yet ?

This book reminds me that even though the darkness of fighting, deamons and hel'l fires, you can still find a white light.
Overall Wrap up
This book was just everything I was craving from book 2 and more. The relationships, the tropes, the supernatural, it was just great. I loved the plot, the depth that the new elements added into it, and honestly I really can not wait for the next part. I'm quite a slow reader but this had me staying up until 1am to finish it as I could not put it down, and despite being 429 pages, it did not feel that long at all and I had finished it within 5 days, and I am a slow reader!

I’m grateful I have been able to read this early, I enjoy the characters and this world so much.
Let’s just reconfirm that Phoenix is book boyfriend material, he’s an absolute saint which our girl Samantha 1000% deserves. Samantha’s life does not become any less tenuous in this book, and there’s so many more characters and situations that test her.
This is a fast paced supernatural fantasy, the books are not spicy but has a genuine romantic connection that is honestly great to read, it’s not everyday enemies to lovers guys sometimes a peaceful connection is the one. There’s a lot of action and tension throughout this story and I was hooked!!
Rating 3.75 stars only because I feel like the book progressed the plot along, but just not as much as I’d of loved.
I got to read an early copy of Infestation and, per usual, it did not disappoint!
Aileen Erin's INFESTATION is a masterful blend of heart-pounding action, vivid world-building, and raw emotions. As the second book in the Days of Iron & Clay series, INFESTATION raises the stakes, drawing readers into a dark, demon-infested world where Sam's (and Phoenix's) courage and resilience are tested at every turn.
Samantha Lopez is an exorcist whose personal mission it is to combat the supernatural horrors plaguing her world, and her story is as compelling as it is haunting. Aileen Erin's protagonist is a breath of fresh air—complex, determined, and achingly human. Her struggles, both external and internal, are portrayed with a rawness that makes her journey deeply relatable, even in the midst of fantastical chaos.
Aileen Erin's writing is sharp and immersive, effortlessly pulling readers into her richly imagined settings. From the eerie, shadow-laden streets of Charleston to the safety of the Sanctuary, every scene is painted with care and precision. The pacing is spot on, keeping the tension high while allowing room for character development and plenty of humor that provides much-needed levity in such a high-stakes world.
But what truly sets INFESTATION apart is Aileen Erin's ability to balance the supernatural elements with profoundly human themes—identity, sacrifice, and the question of what it means to fight for something greater than oneself. The twists are unpredictable, and the emotional beats hit hard, making it impossible to put the book down until the very last page.
Whether you're a longtime fan of Aileen Erin's work or a newcomer looking for a gripping, action-packed story with a strong emotional core, INFESTATION is a must-read.
**Please note, this is BOOK TWO in a series, and reading Book One first is a MUST! Check out INVOCATION first before you dive into INFESTATION!
Another great book by Aileen Erin. This book is very exciting, action packed and a little romance thrown in. The Supernatural element just adds to the book and makes it that much better. Samantha reunites with the love she could never replace, the one she thought got away. All while in the middle of fighting her father who continuously is trying to kill her of late. Phoenix the one she's always wanted, can't believe he's reunited with Samantha, the one he thought got away. Phoenix has to decide to make a life bond with her. Her father also starts killing off the wolves in her friends' pack. She goes on a mission to save them from whatever is killing them. Will Phoenix and Samantha survive this fight? Read the book and find out. I recommend this book highly.
Book 2 of the series and you need to read in sequence since the story builds. The book itself has a contained story that will resolve within it's pages, but there are threads that will carry through from book 1 onwards to what I expect will be an epic conclusion.
I am utterly addicted to Aileen's writing. The story telling in her books blows me away every single time. Infestation was no different. The journey from start to finish takes a bunch of twists and you get little pieces of information and then BAM it hits you in the face when it all clicks.
Along with the substantial paranormal plot (figuring out who/what is taking out werewolves) we have the ongoing growth and development of the relationship between Sam and Phoenix. Sam lets us in a bit more this book revealing her insecurities and doubts about Phoenix's desire to be with her. But at every turn he is there trying to dissuade her fears, to prove his genuine feelings and I will say there are moments when he's providing information to people that are not Sam (who doesn't love a protective found family, it's the absolute BEST) that made me utterly melt for this man. Phoenix is the perfect match for Sam and the more we see, the more sure I am that my happy giddy bouncing will be rewarded (slowly but surely).
I cannot wait to see where they go next in this battle between good and evil, angels and demons, especially when we're learning more and developing powers along the way.
I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of the ebook. These are my honest opinions.
OMG!!! Been eagerly awaiting for this beauty and it was totally worth the wait! Aileen has done a phenomenal job with this one! I didn't think it was possible but OMG I love Phoenix and Sam even more!!
I was hooked from beginning to end and cursing my job for getting in the way of reading time! so rude!!!
This picks up straight after the last book, so you MUST read that first, and its full on from the beginning to the end. Sam is not even given a chance to recover fully from her first fight against her dad before she is having to face another threat!
Phoenix really stepped up even more in this book and at the end just WOW! i can't wait to see more of him in the upcoming book. Talk about match made in heaven with him and Sam!
I loved Sam even more as honestly she is so strong and selfless! She deserved to have the team she had in the Sanctury at her back and now she has Phoenix she finally has someone that is there to support HER and no-one else, her anchor, her person!
Eli - I am even more intrigued on him and really want to know his secrets and what is truly coming!
I cannot wait for book 3 but it will be worth the wait for later in the year! I will get my Aileen Erin fix and go back to re-read/listen to the rest of her books in anticipation!
I was gifted a copy of this book by the Author and this is my honest opinion
First, I had to go back and reread the first book. Second, this book is AMAZING! Third, Phoenix is the new ultimate book boyfriend!
This book picks up from the 1st, and man is it freaking good! Sam and Phoenix have a slow-burn romance happening. And it. Is. Everything! Sam proves just how badass she truly is, with Phoenix proving he's just as badass.
I had forgotten the first book in this series until I was invited to read the second. I had forgotten how much I’d enjoyed it until I read the second. This still has a YA/NA feel to me, which I don’t particularly like, but everything else works for me. I love how the relationship between Phoenix and Sam progressed; it was really hard for Sam to trust, and I liked the way this is dealt with. Add to that, the plot was interesting and engaging, and I was left at the end very satisfied and wanting more, so I am looking forward to the next. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I honestly couldn't wait for book 2 and let me tell you even from the forst two chapters, I knew I was not going to be disappointed. Aileen Erin’s Infestation is an action-packed urban fantasy novel that masterfully blends supernatural thrills with heartfelt romance and emotional depth. As the latest installment in the Samantha Lopez series, the book delivers high stakes, complex relationships, and a heroine who continues to grapple with the weight of her past while facing new dangers that test her limits.
Plot & Suspense The story picks up with Samantha finally back home after surviving the horrors of Hell, but the emotional toll of leaving her friend Gabe behind weighs heavily on her. Despite her relief at reuniting with her loved ones—especially her boyfriend, Phoenix—Samantha can’t shake the guilt gnawing at her. When a new supernatural threat targets a werewolf pack in need of her expertise, she jumps at the chance for a distraction. However, the mission becomes even more complicated when Phoenix insists on accompanying her into the unknown dangers of her world.
On the other hand, Phoenix’s perspective adds another layer to the narrative, offering insight into his deep devotion to Samantha and his growing awareness of the dark forces that surround her. His concerns about a cryptic warning from Samantha’s guardian angel, Eli, create an underlying tension that builds throughout the story.
Erin does a fantastic job of balancing the external supernatural conflicts with the internal struggles Samantha faces—her desire to save Gabe, protect Phoenix, and still hold onto a semblance of normalcy. Each mission feels like a ticking clock, keeping the reader hooked with twists, unexpected allies, and formidable enemies lurking in the shadows.
Characters & Relationships Samantha remains a compelling and relatable protagonist—fiercely independent yet vulnerable, driven by loyalty and an unrelenting sense of responsibility. Her relationship with Phoenix is the emotional core of the book, providing moments of tenderness amid the chaos. Phoenix, for his part, is more than just a romantic interest; his personal growth and unwavering support for Samantha make him a standout character in his own right. Their dynamic is tested throughout the book, but their bond only deepens in the face of danger.
The supporting cast, including werewolves, supernatural allies, and Samantha’s ever-watchful guardian angel, enrich the story with layers of intrigue and camaraderie. Erin excels at making each character feel distinct, with their own motivations and stakes in the unfolding drama.
Writing Style & Atmosphere Aileen Erin’s writing is fast-paced and engaging, with vivid descriptions that bring the supernatural elements to life. The action scenes are gripping, but it’s the quieter, introspective moments that truly shine, allowing readers to connect with Samantha’s emotional journey. The dual perspectives of Samantha and Phoenix add depth, offering contrasting views of the same events and highlighting their different, yet equally strong, approaches to love and survival.
The blend of supernatural horror, romance, and suspense creates an immersive atmosphere that fans of urban fantasy will find irresistible. Erin knows how to maintain tension, weaving humor, emotion, and high-octane action seamlessly throughout the narrative.
Highlights • Emotional Depth: Samantha’s guilt and struggle with loss make for a compelling character arc. • Strong Romantic Element: The relationship between Samantha and Phoenix is heartfelt and realistic. • Supernatural Thrills: A mix of werewolves, demons, and mysterious forces keeps the stakes high. • Dual POV: Seeing events from both Samantha and Phoenix’s perspectives enriches the narrative.
Final Thoughts Infestation is a thrilling and emotional ride that fans of supernatural fantasy won’t want to miss. Aileen Erin delivers an engaging story filled with action, romance, and suspense, all centered around a heroine fighting battles both internal and external. Whether you’re a longtime follower of the series or a newcomer, this installment offers plenty of excitement while setting the stage for even greater challenges ahead.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5) A gripping urban fantasy that blends supernatural action with deep emotional stakes—perfect for fans of strong heroines and high-stakes romance.

This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint!
Infestation picks up where Invocation left off and the action continues with a punch. Sam is still in recovery mode and she’s impatiently trying to get back to work. While Phoenix is worried about how Sam will receive the news of his new role as her anchor, he’s trying to prove to Sam that there’s nothing that could scare him away from the life he wants to build with her.
Sam's character remains relatable, loyal and beautifully flawed but wholly determined and persistent. She hasn’t fully tapped into all of her gifts because she doesn’t want to be compared to her father. The internal struggle she faces challenges her every step of the way but she never lets those thoughts bring her down or keep her from moving forward. Phoenix’s presence is a welcomed and unwavering force that brings the light that Sam needs throughout multiple aspects of her life. Phoenix is the definition of a green flag. His strength and dedication is admirable and he has proven to be well matched for Sam. Minor spoiler= I loved reading Phoenix’s pov on how he had never forgotten Sam and continued to hope they would meet up again. The connection he felt between them hadn’t faded after going years without seeing each other.
Throughout the book readers get to explore Sam’s challenges as she fights demons, closes portals and tries to keep the people she cares about safe. Also there’s dual pov, Phoenix has a couple of chapters where he describes how he plans to continue to build his relationship with Sam and explores how he could contribute more to the group. I love that the characters from the past books are very prominent throughout the story and they are still fighting to protect each other. Their relationships between all of them serve as a vital part of the story, it supports growth for the characters.
Overall, this book is one of my five star reads of the year so far. With the world building, emotions and action, Aileen Erin has woven a story that continues to be a major page turner. Every aspect is well written and the characters are complex but completely lovable. I can’t recommend Infestation enough!!
Demon stories almost always involve religion, but if that isn't your jam, to me it felt like you could easily read this for the beautifully crafted fantasy tale it is. Despite the pure fantastical world created here, the story drew me in and kept me turning pages. My daughter was out for 4 snow days, and I had a hard time putting the book down!
This one picks up pretty much where Book 1 left off, so if you didn't read that I highly recommend you start there. Some books are arguably OK to pick up mid-series, but I don't think this one is. There is a great deal of backstory and context you'll lose if you don't read Book 1.
With fantasy, the world building is always key. Urban fantasy is a little easier possibly because it's within our regular world. Or maybe it's harder because author's have to fit all that within the structure of our world. Either way, the author did a great job. She even provided great nuance for how different supernaturals might be accepted - or not - when they were seen or recognized by the world.
I love our FMC Samantha. She is helpful to a fault, a trait I share with her, and the characterization was done well and believably. Her "gifts" and her religion were all tied up in creating the perfect storm that created that trait. This is why Phoenix is such a perfect MMC to introduce into the equation. I don't want to go much into why so I don't spoil things - but they are well matched. This is something explored throughout the relationships in the books, an emphasis on the strength of the matches. This extended to the friendships and other relationships as well. The wolf pack, best-friend. Tessa, Samantha's mom, and other familial bonds were well explored and vital to the story, as well. I always enjoy stories that feature strong character development, which we see here.
I can't wait for the next book! Both books felt like cliffhangers to me, so the wait until Fall feels long!
The first book was actually good despite some grammatical errors.. but this book was super repetitive with the characters thoughts/POV and even more grammar errors. I don’t understand why almost all of the chapters (especially from Phoenix’s POV) were super long for absolutely no reason. This book was not very action packed, only about 3-4 good chapters. Sam is 24 and Phoenix is 27 or 28 (compared to the first book they were 7 years younger) but in this book they truly think and act like teenagers. Does not feel as if the characters truly grown up or developed much in the last 7 years . Phoenix was a bit cringe, and very over protective person over Sam, granted they have the anchor bond. Everything was too early and he was already claiming how much he loved her/marriage/etc. Sam was just grasping the fact of this happening; even if she did have a massive crush on him since the first book. Honestly when Sam is in the zone, doing her thing, I think she’s amazing but she doubts herself way too much with a lot of things. I hate that. Also, the chapters were in their heads way too much and as I already mentioned the repetitiveness was unnecessary and a bit dreadful. I’m a bit disappointed for how this story was handled / turned out. It definitely would’ve came across better if they weren’t aged to much, and kept as young adults (early 20s).
There’s a 3rd book in this series coming this fall but I truly doubt I will read it. I get everyone has their own opinions on this book but I don’t get the 4+ star ratings 🤷🏻♀️ Oh well, as much as I loved Sam and Phoenix in the first book, this one just wasn’t it for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Infestation by Aileen Erin is everything I wanted in a sequel and more! This book doesn’t just raise the stakes—it throws you headfirst into a whirlwind of emotions, action, and heart-stopping tension that will leave you breathless. Picking up right where Invocation left off, we’re thrust back into Samantha’s world of angels, demons, werewolves, and an unrelenting guilt that haunts her every step.
Samantha’s character development is outstanding—her resilience and determination to do what’s right, even when the odds are stacked against her, make her one of the most compelling YA fantasy heroines I’ve ever read. And Phoenix? Can we just talk about how swoon-worthy and loyal he is? His steadfast support and love for Samantha provide such a strong emotional anchor amidst the chaos of supernatural battles and dark court intrigue.
The emotional depth of this story is what really stood out for me. Infestation is not just about saving the world or fighting supernatural beings—it’s about self-rejection, redemption, and finding the strength to face your own inner demons. Aileen Erin doesn’t shy away from exploring these themes in a way that feels authentic and incredibly relatable, even in a world filled with angels and demons.
The action scenes are intense, the stakes are high, and the found-family dynamic absolutely stole my heart. If you love books that make you laugh, cry, and cheer for the characters like they’re your own friends, then this is the series for you. And the world-building? Simply phenomenal. The rich lore of angels, demons, and werewolves is so well-crafted, it feels like a living, breathing world.
If you’re a fan of Shadowhunters or The Mortal Instruments, you absolutely need to read this series. With its perfect blend of heart-pounding action, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters, Infestation is a dark fantasy masterpiece. Highly recommend adding it to your TBR immediately!
I know, I wasn’t going to read this author after the whole fake reviews for On Destiny, but I really liked the first book in this series and I am a sucker. Plus, Sam is awesome. This is super religious. I know the last one was, and it made sense for the MC, but it didn’t start out narrated by Sam and it was still super religious, which is definitely not my preference. Again, it makes sense for the book, but it felt like a lot in places. It picks up eventually but it was quite repetitive the whole way through, and very insta everything. It is one of those books where there’s a lingering conversation that needs to happen, which the reader knows, and the characters know, and no one has the conversation. There’s so much action in here, and holy Batman are there demons. All the demons make an appearance. It does feel overdone at points, because we keep getting told that she’s given everything and needs to crash, and then she keeps going anyway. We get so many cameos in here, but the standout is obvious Nix. He’s basically the perfect book boyfriend with zero flaws and always doing and saying the right things. It’s still PG, though the author note at the end says next book this changes. I’m really undecided on my rating. It’s around a 3.5 because the constant religion bashing really did bug me. But I am also very much team Nix and Sam, with a Frank sidekick.
Infestation is the second in the Days of Iron and Clay series (a spin off from the Alpha Girls Series). Set immediately after book 1, we continue to follow Samantha Catherine Lopez (our brave and head-strong FMC), daughter of a fallen angel/demon father (Astaroth - the Great Duke of Hell) and human mother (Ana). This makes her a Nephilim - standing between the mortal and spiritual worlds – and overall badass demon warrior.
Despite having barely survived (let alone recovered) from the epic battle with her father and a narrow escape from Hell, along with her Angel guardian, werewolf pack friends and, newly discovered, love interest, they must unpick the mystery around the sudden deaths in the pack – a killer that no one can see. And as things are never what they seem, Sam needs to be careful and remember even her friends might be swayed by the influence of evil.
This race against time, is a thrilling paranormal romance with the sweetest golden retriever man! You swing from horrifying and chilly scenes to cute and cosy cuddles. Everything you could ask for! But not to be outdone, Eli (the cheeky, sarcastic surfer-dude angel) is on top form and continues to be my favourite. He may well be there for the greater good, but he is going to create all the drama while he’s at it!
For transparency, I was delighted to receive an e-ARC copy of this book for review and look forward to supporting the rest of the series
I loved reading Infestation; the author did not disappoint. Infestation is the 2nd book in the Days of Iron and Clay series. It pulled me into Samantha's world of fighting evil and sending demons back from were they came from and saving the innocent (be it human or her werewolf friends). I loved the budding slow burn romance between Sam (Samantha) and Phoenix (Nix) it's very sweet and strong. When push comes to shove our FMC and her friends are there to fight against evil. I love how Sam continues to grow stronger from the good that she does in her work to save the innocent. She makes me think of the the path choices that many humans choose in the life. Our MMC has been amazing and growing stronger as he helps the FMC battle evil and save the innocent. There are some passages that I loved and am going to share: Standing there in the middle of the night with a pack of feral wolves racing toward me, I realized I was in love with this man. - Sam thinking about Nix Son of a biscuit eater. Frank mentioned something about Hunter moving to South Carolina, but he hadn’t said where. And even if he had, how big was Charleston? What were the chances that I would knock on the door of the only person I knew here? - Sam thinking about who she ran into Every word and phrase flowed like magic so much that I'm looking forward to reading the net book to come. So, if you love Slow Burn Romance, Battles fighting Evil, Handsome Male Character then this is the book series for you.
Infestation has a decent premise, but the writing style got in the way. The most obvious issue is punctuation. I’ve been seeing this more often in books lately, but this one takes it to the extreme. Dashes aren’t just frequent; they dominate the rhythm of the text. They show up in places where a comma or period would have worked better. After a while, it feels less like a stylistic choice and more like a habit—or maybe even padding. It also reminded me of how AI-generated text often leans too hard on dashes.
Grammatically, the dashes aren’t always wrong. But stylistically, it’s excessive. Their constant presence breaks the flow and strips the tension out of moments that could have landed harder. When paired with other repeated patterns in the writing, it starts to feel mechanical.
There’s also a rhythm to the sentences that gets repetitive. A lot of short lines. A lot of the same structure. Dialogue feels flat. Characters don’t grow much. Their reactions feel scripted instead of lived. I didn’t connect with any of them for long.
That said, the concept isn’t bad. The setting has promise, and a few scenes do build some tension. There’s a story here that could work with a tighter voice and more attention to pacing.
I’d give it 2 out of 5 stars. It reads more like formatting and repetition than storytelling.
Dangers coming in hot (pun included) straight out the gate with new dangers and creatures, epic battles and the ever-present threat of her father hanging over her head. Fast paced and action packed with more possessions, demon attacks and a bond that will have you all in your feels, slow burn that will singe you.
This part of the story continues with Sam returning from hell and dealing with the aftermath of emotions that come with all that she has endured while she was gone. Specifically, the guilt of leaving her friend, Gabe, behind. It's hard for her to appreciate her escape and the love of those around her when the guilt is weighing her down. An opportunity for a distraction presents itself when the werewolf pack needs her assistance with some incoming threats. Nix, being the protector that he is insists on accompanying her, especially after the cryptic warning from Sam’s angel.
The stellar world building bleeds over from book 1 and is continued into this part of the story. Great writing and all the supernatural friends and those who aren’t so supernatural (cough Frank) really show what found family is really about. As if I couldn’t love Nix anymore, he really shows up and shows out for Sam in this installment. Team Nix all day baby.
I’m so conflicted about this one because I love Samantha so much and I’ve waited so long for her story, but this just irked me more than anything else and it was a mix of the dialogue, character interactions and pacing for me.
I’ve read the entire Alpha Girl series several times now so I’m no stranger to the intense, fast-paced relationships Aileen loves to write but it just felt so forced with Samantha and Phoenix. I don’t know how to explain it. After two days they were basically promising they were together forever and it was just…meh??? Where was the yearning? The getting to know each other even a little bit? There was just no development. It just happened.
The dialogue as well just didn’t do it for me. Sam stopping mid-exorcist or whatever that was in the hospital room to make sure Phoenix was serious about taking her for a milkshake after just made me roll my eyes. It wasn’t even cute which is a shame because I loved the little cute, humorous moments in the Alpha Girl series, especially the ones with Sam involved. It just didnt work here for me.
I actually really didn’t mind the story itself but everything else just let this down for me and I’m so sad about it because I had such high hopes for Sam’s story.
I can predict the first book on my 2025 TBR list will reign as the best book of 2025 and that book is Infestation. This is the second novel of Days of Iron and Clay. As expected, Samantha will continue to kick butt against the evil that arises but she will also become more confident in her relationship with her anchor, Phoenix. Even though she has the unwavering support of her Mom, her mentor and her nosy but loveable pack friends, she needs a partner she can depend on no matter what happens and Phoenix is that man. He is strong both mentally and physically and resists all temptations to abandon this path. Samantha deserves the best and he was destined for her! However, I feel some foreshadowing vibes about Phoenix's Mom and his ex girlfriend, book three can't come soon enough. If you are looking for a thrill ride like, "Stranger Things," that gives you all of the feels do not miss this book!
Ok, I do love a good demon infested read, especially when it is riddled with drama, battles and other supernatural beings. I loved book one, in this series so had hoped this book would be just as packed with all the fun and excitement I had loved before. I was definitely not let down. We pick up right where we left off, so I definitely recommend reading both books and in order. This book gives us more of our main character, Samantha, but with the sadness she has on her shoulders, because she had to l ave Gabe behind, for now. We also delve into Nix's character and find out a lot about them and why they are so willing to o jump into danger, to protect Samantha. I really loved the introduction of the wolf pack and the dynamic, and the excitement adventure, that brought to the overall book. This is an excellent second book, to the series, and I highly recommend both.
Infestation picks up where book one left off and wow what a ride! There’s drama, there’s chaos, there’s romance, there’s lovable side characters, there’s action, there’s everything you’re probably looking for in an exciting supernatural read. I thought the first book was action-packed but this one takes that and keeps the momentum going. There’s no rest for Samantha in this book.
If you’re mostly interested in the paranormal battles then have no fear because they’re still the core of the action and if you’re more here for the romance then you too need not fear because with every page things between Samantha and Phoenix just get swoonier. If you’re looking for something new to explore then definitely consider starting this journey full of werewolves, witches, demons, and more!
Thank you to the publisher and author for sending me a copy to read and review! Read my unboxing post to check out the swag and find out more about the book!https://pooledink.com/2025/04/25/unbo...
I flew through book one last year, Invocation and was super excited to read this.
Angels, Demons, Werewolves. Think good versus evil as a whole host of supernatural beings come together in this great read.
This one is just as much supernatural action as book one but also focuses on Phoenix and Sam's romantic bond. Phoenix is just so super sweet it's adorable. Hard to imagine in all the action, but it works so well.
I actually flew through this to get to the end and see what happens. And I loved it.
There is some great character banter in this, plus found family vibes and interconnected characters from the Authors Alpha Girls series. (I read through the whole 9 book series of that last year after reading, and loving, book one).
I definitely recommend this one, but start at book one as it will definitely make more sense!
I was gifted a copy of this ahead of publication by Love Book Tours. All thoughts are my own.
This is the second book in this exciting new series - Days Of Iron And Clay - and you may have seen my review of book 1 - Invocation - just a few days ago.
This does also link to a previous series by this author and there were some references throughout these books, but they definitely work wonderfully alone too.
I pretty much dove straight into this from finishing book one so I didn't have long to wait to continue Sam and Phoenix's journey and wow! This got even better the more I read.
I'm not a huge fantasy reader normally, but I love the supernatural elements and this really captured me from start to finish!
I loved the development of the characters both individually and the connection and growing relationship between Sam and Phoenix.
The writing totally transported me into this world and as much I usually hate world building, here, it was everything.
I was totally immersed and had clear and vivid images in my mind the whole way through - I could easily see this making a great series on TV.
I already can't wait for the next book, but have to admit that I just might have to grab and read more by this author while I'm waiting....
After reading book one I couldn't wait to get my hands on book two and it was definitely worth the wait, it didn't disappoint at all.
Just like the first the book is well written with a compelling story line that made me jump right in and not want to leave. The characters were well developed and the ones I had already met just continued to grow. I absolutely adore Phoenix and Sam and was so excited to get more from them.
I would highly recommend this series and I cannot wait to read more.
I have loved every single one of Aileen’s books this one did not disappoint. This is book two in the series and it starts right where book 1 ended. It is more action packed, lots of tension and mystery, and we get to see more of the characters from the alpha girl series! I do recommend reading that series first before diving into this one! This story follows Sam a demonologist and her love interest Phoenix. If you enjoy fast paced paranormal ya romance I would highly recommend this series!
Infestation by Aileen Erin. Days of iron and clay book 2. This book starts where book 1 finished. I do love this series. I got into this book straight away. I do love Sam, Frank, Phoenix, Eli, and Ana. There was also Max, Dastien, Tessa, and Garrett. I loved how protective Phoenix was with Samantha. I did like the fight scenes. I really didn't like Astaroth. Samantha father. I did like how everything was described as I could see it in my head. I did like the ending. I do hope there is more to come. I would definitely recommend this series.
