⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow. Just wow. This book completely captivated me from start to finish. The characters were so endearing, their passion practically leapt off the pages, pulling me deeper into their world with every chapter. I was so hooked that I found myself sneaking reads during work breaks and on my commute, unable to resist knowing what would happen next.
Verrick, the male lead, was everything I love about the “strong and silent” archetype. His stubborn, “I want her but I’ll keep my distance” attitude had me screaming at the pages one moment and swooning the next. I adored how his quiet strength made every flicker of vulnerability all the more impactful. He was frustratingly irresistible.
And then there’s Pellia. What an absolutely phenomenal female lead. She was the perfect combination of feminine, flirtatious, and fiercely intelligent. I admired her boldness—whether it was going after what she wanted in love or navigating tricky situations with sharp strategy and grace. Pellia was sensual, smart, and utterly magnetic. I couldn’t get enough of her.
The chemistry between Verrick and Pellia? Off the charts. I flushed, I fanned my face, and yes—those spicy scenes were SPICY. They were so well-written, equal parts passion and emotion, and they left me grinning like a fool.
Even the side characters were brilliantly fleshed out, adding depth and charm to the story. The writing itself was crisp, evocative, and full of heart. This book didn’t just entertain me—it made me happy. I’m still smiling, even after finishing it.
If you love a gripping romance with unforgettable leads and plenty of heat, do yourself a favor and pick this one up immediately. You won’t regret it! Truly. I genuinely could NOT put this one down.

~ STORY 📝 ~
I was so hyped to read about Pellia when I finished the first book! And she did not disappoint 🥰 She's as kind and sunshiny as she was in War Queen and we get to discover much more of her. She's wounded but refuses to live by her past trauma. She wants to regain her freedom, free will, and control over her body after living all her life without being able to do anything but obey and survive.
Also, the way she takes care of her skin and hair is very much appreciated. 🙌✨
Black MCs are rare in fantasy, even more so in monster romance, and I found her to be a great representation. She's a woman with several facets and traits; one of them being black. It's greatly depicted, not only by her but also by how people used to interact with her in a country full of non-black people.
I didn't know what to expect of Verrick since he's barely mentioned in War Queen, but he too did not disappoint. He's a broody Orc with a golden heart and trust issues partly bc he already had his heart broken by his first mate. 💔
It's a thing with this series. Orcs are so sweet, patient, and dedicated lovers who really want nothing more than to be loved and claimed by the person they want as a mate. They're big "brutes" without one once of cruelty in their body, only a lot of affection and interesting features 😏👍🏽
The political intrigue also continues with their plot to uncover the rest of the Cabal and I love this secret society plot! However, the problem that sect created will continue in book #3 and again, I'm just so hyped more about it but also the MCs!! I KNEW from book 1 we would have their story and I can't wait! 😂
~ SPICE 🌶️ ~
Guys we FINALLY discovered the full extent of that orc sibilance!! And he's mixed with a siren...😏
There’s more explicit scenes in this book than the first and it's a little more kinkier too. Also, it comes soon enough but it's not a fast burn either.
If you read this book you're in for:
💚 Masturb@tion (with both in the same room) 💚 Oral s£x 💚 Thrum/ Sibiliance (orc song that strongly enhances the horniness of their woman 😂) 💚 Vibrating tongue & dong (bc of the thrum) 💚 Little size difference 💚 Edging & org@sm denial 💚 Orc with ✨S T A M I N A✨ 💚 Primal play

This is an arc review. Thanks to the author for the advanced ebook copy 🙏💖
The characters didn’t really work for me as well as the last couple. I felt like the beginning of the book didn’t set them up properly. Some of the relationship development was rocky and rushed in places. The sex was also fine but pretty unrealistic and sort of boring after the first few encounters.
The worldbuilding also needed some work. The last book had a smaller scale but in this one the author starts to build the other countries and more races get introduced. There just wasn’t enough page time to do justice to vampires, werewolves, witches, elves, sirens, and demons.
I think the book could have been improved with 50 more pages.
The plot with the Cabal was pretty cool though. I liked the end and set up for the next books. I also liked the inclusion of a BIPOC main character. She was very badass and I loved how she used her wits and kindness.
While I loved the first book I think this one might be my favourite. Pellia working to wear Verrick down with her teasing was the perfect way to make him bite. A big old orc warchief getting flustered over a suggestive comment? I was sitting there grinning like a fool.
Again their relationship was really well paced. Like in the first book, it felt as though the characters came together naturally. And while this time the characters were totally different personalities, they still complimented each other perfectly.
If you’re looking for a monster romance that’s really well written, emotionally gripping and with a plot sprinkled with mysteries then this is the perfect read for you.
Pellia Santir, Human Regent of Adria wants an Orc lover and her sights are set on Warchief
Verrick Ka Roknir. But Verrick has too many memories of his former treacherous human mate that continues to haunt him to ever allow his guard down again.
So Pellia has her work cut out for her in breaking through that barrier around his heart.
War Mistress becomes another exciting second book of the series as the political intrigue, action, adventure, and passions take precedence in a well written, perfectly imagined world, and I enjoyed Pellia and Verrick’s characters who soon discover they are just what each one needs when they have to join forces to confront the dangers to their land and citizens.

Quote:📖 It’s already decided. I wanted a lover of my choice and I’ve found one. Him.
Thoughts: 💡 Hello, Monster Love! Orc romances are always delightful with their angst, copious amounts of… smut, and communication barriers. Like any good monster romance these MCs had fiery chemistry but misconceptions and erroneous ideas to work through before they could reach that happily ever after. Then add in some demon worshiping evil Cabal members and troubled pasts and you get a recipe for a delicious monster romance. Even though this plot was action packed with several parts and a bit of a slow burn romance we still got a big dose of smut early on and an introduction to some interesting “attachments” 😉.
Important Note:✨ This is a standalone romance with a plot that’s part of a greater story arc over the whole series. So you can read just this one, but if you’re going to read the series then start with book 1.

I really enjoyed this story about a woman who had had her while life controlled by the men around take back her power and her agency.
Pellia has been used as a pawn her whole life, her intelligence overlooked by everyone around her. But now that orcs and humans have a tenuous truce, she's been appointed Regent of Adrik. But that means she spends her time dealing with petty squabbles while thinking about the attractive orc regent. Verrick is distant but Pellia knows what she wants. When they have to work together to protect Adrik, she sees her chance to get closer to the orc she wants.
Both Pellia and Verrick are dealing with their own past traumas. A highlight of the book for me was how they gave each other space to heal while also supporting each other. The comfort of a partner who sees you and accepts you as you are was just such a comfort to read.Add in the spice of an orc who very much wants to please his partner, and it makes their relationship swoon worthy.
I really loved reading this continuation of the War Brides of Adrik series, and I'm already excited for the next book!
I really enjoyed the overall plot, and especially the final conflict where Verrick uses his special ability. 😅. I sympathized with Pellia's fear of being owned again, and thought that was dealt with really nicely. I loved the sweetness of Verrick as well. And the idea behind thrumming and sibilance. 😊

This is a perfect little orc fantasy romance! This is only my second orc book but this surely didn’t disappoint! Both books(1st and 2nd) offer a handful of tropes and some happen to be my favorites! Grumpy sunshine, soulmates and fake dating to name a few! The chemistry was fantastic, characters were fantastic, and both books were very well written. I’m a sucker for a monster romance and this one was a really fun read if you’re into that!
I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to do this ARC for Jordyn Alexander in exchange for my opinion.
Another amazing orc romance, will the wonders ever cease?? This one is very similar to book 1, with tropes of forced proximity, royalty, animosity to lovers, orc X human. Smut was 3/5 on the spice scale, orcs really do it for me apparently! And it’s a HEA in a series of interconnected standalones.
These two characters both flawed, both raw and vulnerable, came together like fire. I wanted to stay in this world with them forever. They would burn the world down for the other every single time and I adored it.
I think this is the best grumpy sunshine I've had the pleasure of reading, Pellia is confident and not afraid to go after what she wants, even if it is a stubborn orc punishing himself for past misjudgments. I absolutely loved her tenacity in her persual of Verrick, he was getting absolutely no choice in the matter and I was here for it. I was rooting for her from chapter one.
An amazing book, a great second book to the first. Carries the story on really well. Loved how the characters developed further in this book. Great communication. Dynamics were good and great themes were explored. Can’t wait to read more.
★ ★ ★ ★ So, this book snuck up on me. I love to write when I am flying but this book detoured that. I started War Mistress the day before I flew to Europe and then binged on it (and finished it) during my flight. I was engrossed in this well written story and couldn’t put it down.
What the reader can expect: ♥ Strong resilient FMC ♥ Grumpy/Sunshine ♥ Pretend Relationship/Dating ♥ Forced Proximity ♥ Secret Society
I love the girl power in this series. The women take the world by wit, intelligence, and action regardless of the trials and abuse they have been through. Not only do they make the way for themselves, but they also support and uplift each other. While the orc males might be legendary for their fighting force and violence on the battlefield, they are very supportive of their females and tender for them.
Pellia Santir was stripped of all her choices and forced into the position of King’s mistress--until he dies on the battlefield. With his death, the Queen appoints her the Regent of Adrik, a position to be held with an orc counterpart-- Verrick ka Roknir.
Orcs are notorious for their sex drive and their drive to please their partner. Pellia comes to a decision, she wants an orc lover, and it is going to be Verrick ka Roknir.
Verrick ka Roknir is quiet and has little patience for human squabbles. He wants to fulfill his duty and do right by the Orc King. Pellia openly makes passes at Verrick, but he shakes them off. He has a past of betrayal and heartbreak and has sworn off human females.
When Pellia finds herself in contact with the Cabal, she will do anything to destroy them. Even start a fake relationship with an orc she has been trying to get in-between the sheets to deceive them. But is she deceiving them or her heart?
Pellia is so confident and ballsy. The things she would do to get a reaction out of Verrick would either surprise me, make me chuckle, or blush. The banter was stellar, and it built the tension and chemistry between the characters. Verrick has some major self-control, he held out way longer than I would have.
The development of The Cabal in book two really helps build the plot and raise the stakes. Also, S*** gets real with them- insert demon here. It made things very exciting.
I enjoyed War Mistress even more than book one, War Queen. I’m interested to see if she is going to perform the same magic with book 3.
This is the second book in the War Brides of Adrik series by Jordyn Alexander, and much like the first, I had been very much engrossed with the story and the characters from start to finish. As in the first book, the main characters are a human woman and an orc warrior, who both now serve as regents to the human queen and orc king. Their attraction is unmistakable from the start, with Pellia acknowledging very early on that she wants Verrick as her lover. Verrick resists, having been betrayed in the past by a human woman he'd loved and who he thought had loved him. But his mating instincts defy him now, as these instincts do not deny the pull to claim Pellia as his mate.
Both are forced to work close together as they try to zero in on the enemy that threatens the hard-earned peace of their land. Eventually, their mutual attraction is consummated in a physical joining of their bodies. But their tentative union is threatened when Verrick declares his love and his desire to fulfill the mating claim, for all that Pellia knows of being claimed as one's mate is equivalent to another's ownership of her body and control of her freedom. And that is something she has vowed to never experience again.
I've always been deeply drawn to stories about learning to overcome the fears and traumas experienced in the past, especially when they impede one's experience of happiness and genuine love at the present time. That was precisely what this book had been about, with a focus on what love truly should mean when it comes to the giving of oneself to another. The fact that the characters are of the fantastical sort just adds to the appeal. And of course, the delicious steamy scenes are a huge bonus. So this was definitely a book. So this had definitely been a delightful read for me, one I know I'd be wanting to re-read again in the future.

“The Mating Instinct pushes me to follow her, to explain, to bring her back. But my pride stills my movement. If she doesn’t want me, she will not have me.”
Pellia was the former king’s Mistress, and when the orcs come, she’s more than willing to get this upgrade. And we’re all here for it.
Pellia is a woman that’s been hurt in the past, that’s been used, and now she’s coming into her own and she knows what she wants. Verrick has also been hurt in his past, and he’s gun shy, but Pellia earns his trust and the romance is so good. Also, there’s a lot of political stuff that I ate up, and that serves as a backdrop for this story. Delicious.
I’m into this whole series. The whole thing, I can’t wait for the next one.
Jordyn Alexander's "War Mistress" takes readers on a thrilling journey into a world of fantasy, where the unusual pairing of a human woman, Pellia, and an Orc, Verrick, sets the stage for a captivating and steamy romance. The narrative skillfully drew me in from the very beginning. The story delves into the complexities of Pellia's past, highlighting her struggles with the control of men and her newfound freedom to make her own choices. The character of Verrick, an Orc with undeniable allure, adds a unique and intriguing element to the narrative.
The internal conflict, he faces in resisting his attraction to Pellia is well-portrayed, creating tension and anticipation throughout the story. I found Jordyn Alexander's writing style engaging, with vivid descriptions that bring the fantasy world to life. The narrative successfully balances the elements of fantasy, romance, and naughtiness, offering a well-rounded and enjoyable story.
Fans of fantasy romance, especially those open to unconventional pairings, will find this story both alluring and entertaining. As a first-time reader of Jordyn Alexander's work, I look forward to exploring more from this talented author. I received an advance reader copy of this book via Booksirens from the author. This review is purely from my perspective, and all opinions are mine. I am under no obligation to review the book.
Great monster romance and so much more. This is the second book in the War Brides of Adrik series. This book featured a well written and entertaining story line, strong chemistry, and good world building. It Includes several popular tropes including grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, fated mates, and fake dating. The story is written in multi pov and follows Pellia, the FMC and Verrick, the MMC. I luved Pellia’s she was all parts, passion, determination, vulnerability, empowering yet relatable. Verrick definitely was a brooding grump, but he was also thoughtful, loving and supportive. Both characters also had compelling back stories where they experienced tragedy. They had their own healing journeys to go through and it gave them an added layer of depth as their characters and relationship progressed throughout the story. I found it endearing how they both supported one another’s journeys, yet also gave one another the space to heal in their own ways. As for the romance, it was steamy slow burn style with undeniable chemistry between the FMC and MMC. It was not overly spicy or explicit. For those seeking a good monster romance. Look no further! Who can resist a grumpy, tattooed, 6’11“ orc? This was my first series by this author and I cannot wait to read more of her books! Well done. Luved this read!
"War Mistress" by Jordyn Alexander is a captivating story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The book follows the story of Pellia, a human regent, and Verrick, an orc warchief, as they manage their roles and the turbulent world around them.
The chapters alternate between Pellia and Verrick's perspectives, offering us deeper insights into their characters and motivations. From Pellia's reflections on her disdain for political maneuvering to Verrick's internal struggles with his past and his attraction to Pellia, each chapter adds layers to the story, building anticipation for the unfolding events.
The dynamic between Pellia and Verrick is a central focus of the story, with their interactions ranging from playful banter to intense moments of vulnerability. Their evolving relationship is beautifully portrayed, filled with tension, longing, and a hint of forbidden desire.
The plot is rich with twists and turns, as Pellia and Verrick manage the political landscapes, confront looming threats, and struggle with moral dilemmas. The pacing is great, keeping me engaged from start to finish.
Fans of epic fantasy and intricate world-building will enjoy reading this book!
This one topped the first book in this series! Wow, what an amazing story between Pellia and Verrick, I am in love. An absolute 5-star read where time just flew by!
I loved how confident Pellia is in this book. She's gone through horrible things in her past and seeing her smile and be happy and be confident in her body is everything. I also really appreciated how compassionate she was towards her people. And I want to highlight her braids and how we saw her take care of them and her skin in this book. Swoon. Love that.
Verrick did make me groan a few times, he was still carrying his past hurt on his shoulders and it made him act cold and uncertain around Pellia. But those were good groans because we got to see him grow and really understand that whatever had happened in his past, it wasn't Pellia who had done them. A+ character development.
The overall plot advanced greatly in this book and I had so much fun with the action and adventure. We got to learn more about the land, about the Cabal, about the Orcs and everything. I am in awe of the way the author balanced everything and created this wonderful book. And the hints at the end of the this book have me eager for book three! It's going to be amazing, I'm sure of it.
3.5 War Mistress is fine, which is itself fine. But it is also disappointing because when I read book one, War Bride, I thought it something special. War Mistress is fine, but it didn't have anything that struck me as particularly excellent or unusual. It is a fine orc romance. I mean, I liked the characters fine. The villian is super obvious with underwhelming and cliched motivation. But we've all read such a thousand times before. So, there's no reason to complain about it more than elsewhere. So, it is fine. The romance borders on fated mates and, therefore, doesn't particularly grow so much as just burgen with the characters' proximity to one another. But again, that's nothing new. So, it's fine. The third-act breakup is predictable and too easily resolved. But third-act breakups are super common plot points. So, again, fine. All in all, this is a fine romantasy. If I hadn't liked book one so much more than this one, I don't think my enjoyment of this one would feel so tarnished in comparison. But I did. So this one just feels like a less polished, less interesting book.
For everyone looking to read a spicy monster romance, this will hit the spot, iykwim 😅🎯🌺🍆 It's the second book in The War Brides of Adrik series, so the premise is somewhat familiar already to those who have read the first book: there's war, bad guys making bad things happen to the kingdom and its people, but then there is also a part of the plot with gorgeous humans and hot orcs (who can make their swords vibrate) looking to mate for the sake of the kingdom. Yes - make love not war - you heard me right. It's a light, easy read that might just leave you hot and bothered, haha. I've personally liked the first book a bit more because I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters in this one that well, but I am still intrigued enough about what's going to happen in the country of orcs and humans, and who will be the next couple to venture on a (steamy) adventure, to look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Thank you to the author, publishers, and BookSirens for the ARC of this book. My review is based solely on my honest opinion, and is written with the utmost respect.
Book 2 of this series allows you to fall into a world where strong women reign and refuse to yield unless it's on their terms. Pellia, our human regent, epitomises resilience after enduring the possessive grip of a former king. Now, she's determined never to be owned again. This orc fantasy romance is a delightful blend of spice and empowerment. Pellia's journey to reclaim her power is both heartwarming and empowering. Paired with Verrick, our rugged orc hero, they navigate past traumas and find healing in each other's arms. The author's storytelling captivates, drawing readers into the characters' struggles and triumphs, even those of the villains. This sweet and sexy romance will leave you spellbound. Witness Pellia and Verrick's relationship evolve, rooted in mutual support and growth. Amidst protecting their home, sparks fly, igniting a passion that's as fiery as it is tender.
A second excellent book in the War Brides of Adrik series. I am so happy that Pellia got her own book, especially just after Adalind. You don't need to read War Queen to enjoy this book but you will get more out of it. Truly a romantasy, the romance is both prominent and key to the plot.
Pellia has been freed from a life as an unwilling mistress and made regent of the human lands, and now she knows who she wants in her bed: her counterpart, regent Verrick. For his own reasons, he appears to be resistant to her charms. Then they are called to deal with growing mysterious fires in the south, and he can't avoid her forever. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved, loved, loved a character who actively wanted a specific orc as a lover. This relationship required growth from both Pellia and Verrick, which was great to watch unfold. Also loved the forced proximity, fake dating, and only one bed tropes. Just as in the first book, this is the perfect mix of politics, plot, romance, and open-door spice.
A huge thank you to Jordyn Alexander for the opportunity to review this great book!
I loved The War Mistress. It tied up some of the loose ends from the first book in the series and it also opened up some new ones that are driving me crazy as they rattle around in my head. The love story between the FMC and MMC is beautiful. They have both been scorned by love in the past and it left both of them afraid to love again. Although the war is over there are still some low lives around trying to stir up trouble. The way my heart dropped in those last few chapters has to be unhealthy. I was lucky enough to be able to read this book early ( through booksirens) but now I have to wait even longer for the next one to come out. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. Oh before I go I should let you know that I gave this book 3 chili peppers. The passion between these to out-matched The FMC and MMC from War Bride and we also get to find out how that fancy simbalance ( is that how you spell that?) works *wink* *wink*
Another enjoyable book in this series. Intriguing overarching plot carrying over from the first book. Fascinating MCs.
I loved Pellia's inner strength and vivacity. I truly loved her resiliency to overcome all the bad things life had thrown at her. She was fun, flirty and intelligent. She also carried her own deep scars from her experience being the former kings mistress along with her own childhood. It was impossible not to love her tbh.
Same goes for Verrick. He was equally scarred by his own life experiences from his childhood and his unfortunate choice of a first mate. I honestly couldn't blame him for being a bit biased, distrustful and resistant to giving any human a chance. But particularly another beautiful female such as Pellia. It was hard to not to feel for either MCs past hurts and how it affected their growing relationship.
Overall it was an interesting read. I adored both MCs and loved seeing them find their happy ending.
Having never read any sort of monster romance before taking the leap and starting The War Brides of Adrik is a choice I have not regretted.
War Mistress is an excellent continuation that will keep you gripped from page one.
Alexander's characters don't lack for depth and are indeed quite complex. Having their own agency meaning that the romance aspects don't feel forced but rather more natural. I caught myself smirking a fair few times while reading certain scenes ( if you know, you know).
What really sets this fantasy romance apart from so many is how much world building and storytelling there is, I really got sucked in. Oftentimes, we get far too much "romance" that the plot becomes secondary. I am addicted to this series, and the next book can't come soon enough!
Jordyn Alexander is the queen of monster romance, and I doubt you could change my mind on that.
I really enjoyed this book, apart from anything else, who doesn't love a story about a woman who has been downtrodden and controlled, suddenly taking back control and coming back fighting. I was totally here for it.
The book is well written with a compelling story line and well developed characters that were so real they jumped off of the page. I loved Pellia and Verrick, and, more importantly I loved them together I loved the teasing banter that Pellia instilled into the relationship and I loved how Verrick got all flustered over it, the images I had in my head were worth every time I reread it.
The pacing was perfect and flowed so well that it felt like it was playing out naturally in real time right in front of me. This became the fantasy romance I didn't know I needed but now I am completely invested in. I can't wait to read more by this author.
This was a really good continuation of the plot from War Queen. Pellia and Verrick made a great lovers to enemies pair. The plot between War Queen and War Mistress is similar but different, the same secret group is behind the issues presented in this story, but different individuals with different purposes. I also like how they set up the potential crises for the next few books and where the overarching plot of the series could lead.
I think the thing that stuck out to me more here than in the first book was the use of non-historical language. It wasn't modern slang or euphemisms by any means, but there was more usage of shortened words that I think don't fit into a historically set book. But that is just my opinion.

🖤 After reading War Queen, The War Brides of Ardik Book #1, I was captivated by this vividly written monster fantasy romance. I wasted no time getting into War Mistress, which is book 2 in the series. This exciting story has mystery, action, political tension and passion. The story and the relationship development is perfectly paced. 🖤 Both Verrick and Pellia are dealing with past trauma, but refused to allow it to control their future. They have powerful chemistry and are working on healing, acceptance and providing each other support and pleasure. The slow burn spice is the perfect amount of naughty goodness. 🖤 If you enjoy an emotionally charged sweet, sexy, monster, fantasy romance in this book is for you.
