My job is to break Piper Matthews.
But to leave her breathing afterward.
An important distinction, since I don’t walk away from a job without blood on my hands.
That’s how I like it. How it needs to be.
I’m comfortable with death. Pain. Cruelty.

No conscience troubled me when I took Piper Matthews deep into the Appalachian woods, intending on fracturing her mind, destroying her.
I never imagined she would destroy me instead.
With her smile. Her laughter. Her forgiving heart that isn’t mine to take.
The heart she gives me despite my blackened soul.

My mangled, ruined heart beats only for her. And the feral beast inside of me will tear apart all those who think they can hurt her.
Now my job is to take down the man who employed me to break her so the could own her.
No one in this world will own Piper. No one will hurt her.
Because that pleasure is reserved solely for me.

Fabulous!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: captive, hit man
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥1\2

This was my first book by Anne Malcolm and it was absolutely fabulous! Fast paced with tons of action and hot tension. The storytelling was great, but it was really the characters that pulled you in and got you invested. I love it when the MMC is totally confused by his feelings for the heroine, lol. It was great ❤. I'm super excited by her long backlog - going to be tearing through the entire thing!

If you’ve been waiting for Knox Rhodes, like I have, you will NOT be disappointed. This man, for all his darkness is all kinds of book boyfriend goodness.
Yes, he’s a killer.
Yes, the gray he lives in is more black than gray.
But he is everything.

BUT…

There is Piper Matthews. She is a force and I freakin’ adored her.
And that’s all I’m going to say about her because you get a good look at who she is based on the blurb, but I seriously do not want to spoil this woman for you.

Nor do I want to spoil just how these two opposites find that they are perfect for each other. I will say that the whole grumpy/sunshine is way to docile for these two, but it’s a start.

There was a large part of me that wanted to devour this baby, but I decided to savor it and was rewarded by truly enjoying all the nuances into the heart and mind of two unique characters and how they found love in a very dark situation and came out stronger for it.

Book Name/Series: Captive Souls
Author: Anne Malcom
Standalone?: Can be read as a standalone, but includes characters from other books.

4 Stars

My Opinion: This was a pretty great read. I liked the storyline, the characters were interesting, and the writing was pretty good. My only two gripes were that the inner monologues got a little long winded, and I wish the hero and heroine had communicated a bit more.

Hero: 4/5. Knox (40) was the definition of tortured. He’d had an incredibly traumatic childhood which had shaped him into who he was. He considered himself to be monster who could only live in the shadows of the world. In the beginning he was very closed off and cold with Piper despite instantly developing an attraction to her. However, he slowly begins to open up and we see him begin to care for her in his own way. He also becomes super possessive and protective of her.
Heroine: 4/5. Piper (32) had also had a traumatic childhood with an abusive father. She remained level-headed for the most part while also maintaining her sassy, stubborn and defiant attitude. I liked that she tried to make the best of a pretty terrible situation.

POV: 1st person POV (Knox and Piper).

Push/Pull:

Sadness: 1/5.

Explicit Sex and Spice Level: Yes. 3/5.

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) Drama: Kind of.

Separation:

Cheating: No.

Closure/Ending: HEA.

Possible Triggers:

this one’s a bit hard to review, it was cool, hooked me in, i liked Knox, the tension was there, i wanted to finish it and see what happens but it’s not a book i’ll think about for long. i think the characters internal monologues, especially pipers, were so long for no reason. it just kept going on and on, it got boring fast. i wished it had a stronger ending, or the reunion between the main characters was more intense. idk i just needed something more intense to happen between the main characters to really seal their relationship and the story. it lacked that which is why it won’t be memorable but i don’t regret reading it either.

Skimmed through most of it - it’s boring, long, any mainly about what a MC is thinking there’s little actual plot. I don’t mind slow burns but this was just yapping for vibes

The author also repeated things often which made me think this didn’t have enough proofreading or drafts

Also it’s written in a way where a writer thinks they’re showing off their intellect by using complicated language and sentence structure it just comes off as stupid and illiterate

So excited for Knox’s story! After getting to know him a little in the previous book involving his brother, I was so excited to see what Anne would do with his character, and she did NOT disappoint! Tasked with breaking Piper because his boss wants her for himself, things like this are usually not a problem, until he meets his match in Piper in both her looks and personality. While he’s usually not attracted to anyone, all that changes when Piper challenges him at every turn when he essentially kidnaps her and takes her to the woods to break her. Stubborn and determined to not be a victim, everything changes when she almost dies, and Knox realizes he’s met his match in her. Of course, the boss finds out, and while Knox struggles with his feelings for her she is kidnapped and beat up to prove a point, he then also focuses on avenging her and keeping her safe. Piper, however, takes matters into her own hands and plays her part perfectly, showing that women are just as strong as the men hired to do these things originally. Loved this story, although it was missing a little something for me at the end that Anne’s storylines usually have. Overall, it was a great read, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Knox et Piper Matthews
Nettoyeur et promise de Stone
Midnight Man
Dark

Stone De Luca (chef mafieux)

Wow, can you say tortured MMC!
I met Knox in his brother and Avery's book, and from the snippets he was in this book, you knew he only really existed in dark places. I'm not saying he was a bad man, but he loved in darkness and stayed away from his family to protect him. This book starts off with you meeting his boss, who is a mafia Don, wanting to finally take a wife, and he found her. He wants Knox to kidnap her and mentally break her so she agrees to marriage and the life of a mafia crime boss. Piper was a school teacher who loved and protected her sister and had a traumatic childhood. So when she meets the Don and he wants her and she refuses, she now has been caught in his sights. Piper was super level-headed through a lot of this book even though she was kidnapped and forced in a secluded cabin with a killer. I liked that about hwr actually and how her defiance made her stand up to Knox a lot, which i believe brought him out of his self-loathing.
Knox is very tortured from his past that has made him into what he is today to vope with his trauma. He is a fierce protector. This book is mostly in the cabin where he takes her to break her. The issue I had is I needed more breaking of her spirit in the cabin. I felt like Knox was all talk and thrn just watched her and became obessed. She thrived in that cabin. I wanted more of his darkness, honestly. Now, when he opened up to her, it was great, but the pacing of the cabin was off. I did like the way they tackled her nuptials and how anne made Knox not a completely changed man. He just stasy in the light with Piper.

In this dark, Mafia story we get to know Knox Rhodes better after meeting him briefly in ‘The Things We Burn’—a fantastic book, but not necessary to read before this one. I really like him even though he is more than a killer for hire, he intrigues me. The things that are divulged show he is so much more and my protective feelings became quite strong when more is revealed. Enter Piper Matthews, one feisty teacher of young children and the lead female who is a lot stronger than even she knew she was with her sassy comebacks and wilful determination. However, the two are opposites and I love it!

This story epitomizes the ‘grumpy sunshine’ trope. It also showcases how no matter what you do, physical attraction is extremely powerful even when you have been captured by the most unfeeling man around. Piper is just the person to shake up Knox like a bottle of bubbles—ready to pop at any minute. She unwittingly does it in the beginning but her sense of outrage at being told what to do, where to go and what to eat fuels this attitude. Again, I truly like her character especially her self honesty.

Be prepared for quite a bit of angst, a very suspenseful storyline, to fall for the MMC whose dark persona is very, very real and a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable story.

🖤 Captive Souls, Anne Malcom. 🖤

I accidentally found this book as you do on late night random scrolls of Goodreads and the blurb hooked me!

This book was packed to the brim- it had mafia, hitmen, kidnapping, trauma, cabin in the woods, romantic comedy, one bed, forced proximity, arranged marriage, a plucky FMC aged 30 and an emotionally damaged, deadly and OTT obsessive, possessive MMC in Knox. It reminded me of daytime tv soap operas- melodramatic, exaggerated but addictive. There was also this sardonic, dry humour poking fun at mafia romances which I enjoyed. It was also tender and romantic.

I haven’t read anything by Anne Malcom before- this is standalone but has interconnected characters from her other books and dual POV, slow burn and not super spicy.

It’s on the lighter side, no angst, with some triggers. Knox is a hitman working for a mafia don. He is instructed to kidnap Piper so the don can force her to marry him. Cue. Shenanigans in the mountains.

It was just what I needed. Perfect in its telenovela mafia themed chaos! If you liked The Bad Guy, I think you will like this!

Captive Souls was definitely more on the darker side of this author’s books, which is not new, but Knox appears much colder and harder than usual but did not take away how absolutely perfect he and Piper ended being together. I remember after reading Things We Burn where we initially meet Knox, I was already fascinated with him and wanted his story so badly.

Now don’t get me wrong, how Knox became part of Piper’s life was not good (to say the least), and reading his POV was difficult at times but as you read on their story I became more and more fascinated with him. I knew going in that he had gone through something traumatic and finding how tortured he was from his past was heart breaking so seeing what a person like Piper, the absolute opposite of him would bring to his life was perfect. Piper is a school teacher with such a loving heart. She would do anything to protect her sister which is how she got caught in the sights of a mafia Don. He becomes obsessed with her and decided that she was to become his wife in any means necessary. He hires Knox to kidnap and break her until she agrees to marry him. Piper did not cower and did not give up, she is fierce and defiant, but still had the ability to see the man behind the beast.

Knox and Piper’s story had gripped me from the very beginning and did not let me go until the very end. Reading how this man who was adamant that he was devoid of all feelings and needing to stay in the dark actually reaching for Piper’s light was everything that I needed. What a wonderful read this was. An absolute must read!

When I started reading this, I thought it was a new character for Anne Malcom but then a light bulb went off and I was like HOLY SH** this is Kane's brother that we got a small glimpse of him in The Things We Burn. The broody almost ghost like person that is there but not seen. I was so happy to see this story because we all love a broody mysterious man that gets knocked on his knees for a person and feelings he is not used to. Piper was in the sights of the Mafia King of NY, and he would do anything to have her. Little did he know she was a force to be reconned with once Knox and her were lone. She knew what she was up against but didn't see that the longer they were together, the more her fate was sealed.

I love a broody man and when he finds someone who piques his interest, it is game over for what he is supposed to do.

I wanted to savor this story and to read along with the ones who think they are broken and are beyond redemption. They both do what they have to do in order to live a safe and free life. So again, another awesome story from this author.

Anne sure does know how to write a good story. She is the best with telling these dark stories that just consume you. She likes to take us readers on a ride that leaves us book hungover. I always think about her stories long after I am done. Even doing re-reaeds.

Know and Piper were good characters that you could really feel their chemistry and just really were meant for each other. Anne knows how to write couples that have that extra steam which adds to the story in my opinion.

I also love how Anne writes about family and love, and protective vibes. I just feel like I know these characters and I want to be in their group. You know a author is doing something right when it feels like you are living real life right along with the characters.

Over all, this is an amazing read. I just love this author and everything she does. She is a one click for me.

This is such a beautifully written piece of dark and agnsty romance. It is more than the sunshine and grump trope. I love how Knox who is more edging morally black than grey plays against the light that is Piper's character. This was a joy to read despite hanging me on an emotional precipice several times because the interplay of the characters two personalities is lovely and the plot is beyond engaging which made it very difficult to put down. I love this author and she never disappoints with how beautifully written her characters and plot are. Just a really engaging read that I very much recommend.

Wow this story, really hit me.
This story and the Characters are intense as is usual with an Anne Malcolm story.
The MMC is so gray he is almost back while the FMC is a force and they play well against each other.

This author is magic to me she manages to capture the angst and heartache and passion beautifully in middle of all that is darkness and danger. Knox is cold and hard and dead inside with a barely restrained beast. He needed someone sweet yet powerful like Piper to make him feel alive again.
Piper is the level headed woman that is need to tame the beast that is Knox.

Loved this book.

Knox and Piper were an explosion waiting to happen, and when it finally did, what a bang.

I will say that if you are looking for your typical love story, this book may not be for you, but if you like some darkness with you romance then you need to read this immediately. You will not be able to help but fall hard for the Devil in this story. He really had no choice but to fall for Piper, her sexy sassiness was too much for his cold heart to resist. She made him feel things he never thought he would and in return he made her feel safe and loved.
If you previously read Things We Burn then you need to read this one. Knox will not disappoint!!

Anne Malcom is queen of writing dark and dangerous heroes who we just can't help but fall for, and Knox is no different. He is a man who didn't think he was capable of love... until he saw Piper. Her sass, fierceness, and determination to hold on to her sunshine outlook on life no matter her dismal circumstances were just what Knox needed. I LOVED these two together - their chemistry is FIRE, the suspense is addictive, and the cameo appearance of Kane and Avery was the cherry on top. Well done once again A Malcom!!!

I have been intrigued by Knox since we met him in Things We Burn. I absolutely loved getting to sift through the darkness that is Knox and make no mistake, he is dark, while unraveling who Piper is and what she is made of. From the beginning we knew there was more there than meets the eye. She has grit and determination while still being the light to his dark. These two pulled me in and refused to let me go. There is a reason this author is one of my automatic reads and this book proves yet again why.

If you're looking for a dark, dangerous, morally grey hero, who doesn't really care about anything, look no further, Knox Rhodes will fit the bill, well that's until he starts to care ;) and when he does, it's a revelation.

Captive Souls takes us back to a dark Anne Malcom. With a delicious, angsty, unexpected story of two souls (one of them broken) coming together.
I loved it all, the writing, the characters, the development and the way it unraveled into such a wonderful love story.

Bravo.
Loved it.

Cative Souls really take you behind the lifestyle of the man Knox Rhodes who was tasked with the job of kidnapping of Piper Matthews a kindergarten teacher and was threatened to become a monsters wife.

What happens when the man you feared, is the man you should be fearing the most.
Exposed pain and heartache are a constant throughout the storyline, however Piper was determined not to let Knox break her. Her heart on the other hand was drowning with the extra protection required when it all went bad

Captive Souls is a stunning, soulful, masterful read. It's one of those hard to put down, but savored slowly kinds of books. Malcom weaves a perfect antihero (who truly is a villain) in Knox, and his evolution with the help of the bad a$$ that is Piper is perfection. If you are looking for a fantastic, mature storyline, sunshine vs darkness, one of the best heroines you'll meet, lots of spice, or mafia romance is your thing, Captive Souls should be at the very top of your list! 5 Spectacular Stars!

I've missed dark books by this author, and this book is proof of why.
It did take me a while to fully get into but once I did I couldn't put it down. I think it was more my headspace than the book itself.
If you're a long time reader of this author like myself you'll especially love the cameo from a book I now have the desire to re-read.
I will not comment on characters or plot as lives are constantly on the line for many reasons.
Definitely recommend.

Captive Souls❤️‍🩹

Captive Souls is another reason why I love Anne’s stories❣️There’s a darkness to them that only she can capture. It took me a while to get into the book, even though the blurb pulled me in straight away…I’m blaming this on the Christmas holidays…anywhooo, it was only as I reached 64% that my brain lit a lightbulb as to who the story was about🙈

Loved it and definitely would recommend❣️ I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review😍

Anne Malcom is the best when it comes the dark side and angst to the reader. Knox and Piper were great, they definitely complimented each others characters. They had all the feels, their passion was off the charts. Anne's books always suck me in from start to finish feeling like I know the characters personally and taking the adventures as if they were mine. I also love how the other characters from prior books make appearances and still protect each other. Loved this read so much.

Surprisingly I liked this one worst that the last one, and while I do enjoy some máfia-ish romances and morally grey characters I do not like captive like stuff, specially after I read that one book by Danielle Lori that just left me traumatized with anything related to being captive (there was a lot of Stockholm syndroming in that one, and it was just overall one of my worst reading experiences ever)
Anyways would still recommend if you read the first one and got curious about Knox but I would not read it as a stand alone at all

Kicked off the new month with a fast-paced and intense read! Fmc gets kidnapped by mmc and taken to remote cabin where he’s been assigned to break her spirit before she gets married to a mafia don, yet he finds himself unable to do so. Even worse, he can’t picture her with anyone else other than him. Some moments were too intense and dark for me but overall I enjoyed!

Tropes: forced proximity, enemies to lovers, grumpy x sunshine, age gap (10 years), obsessed mmc, possessive mmc
