Humbug! leads to Homicide! in the new Grilled Cheese Mystery by Linda Reilly . . .
Christmas in the close-knit community of Balsam Dell promises to be especially festive for Carly Hale this year when a prominent theater company comes to town to stage A Christmas Carol. But it turns out that Scrooge is not the most ill-tempered character in the production, as blowhard actor Prescott Lennon proves when he begins berating everyone else in the cast for their poor theatrics. When his arrogant behavior threatens the production, someone decides to resolve matters with a fatal solution—and frames Carly’s friend Gina for the murder.
With such an unlikable victim, Carly finds herself faced with a long list of suspects, including a grieving widow who hasn’t shed a tear, an ambitious understudy looking for his big break, and all the cast members Lennon mistreated. But there’s a ghost of a clue in the air as rumors begin to surface that the dead man had a shady past that may have come back to haunt him. With her friend still on the hook, Carly will have to sort out past misdeeds from those of the present, even as her pursuit of the killer scares the dickens out of her . . .

Carly is happy to be attending a dress rehearsal of the production of A Christmas Carol that has come to town. However, Preston Lennon, the actor playing Jacob Marley, causes such a disruption they have to take an unscheduled intermission. Then Carly’s friend, Gina, finds Preston’s body in his dressing room. Can Carly clear her friend?
While a play of A Christmas Carol might be familiar in a Christmas cozy, I enjoyed the twist on who the victim was. It led to a strong mystery with plenty to suspects and a logical climax I didn’t see coming. The characters are all fun to be around. I especially enjoyed spending time with the series regulars again, and I appreciated that the warnings to Carly to be careful were toned down in this book. The Christmas spirit is strong; it made me wish I were reading it in December with my decorations already up. There are two recipes at the end, including a Christmas grilled cheese. Grill up a sandwich and enjoy this fun Christmas mystery.
A theater company will be performing A Christmas Carol at the Flinthead Opera House in Balsam Dell this holiday season. Prescott Lennon appears to have been cast for the wrong part, instead of Marley, he should be playing Scooge although the man is even worse than Scrooge. He rebukes nearly every member of the cast and crew and basically everyone he meets. He must have pushed somebody too far because the man was found dead in his dressing room. Sadly the evidence points to Carly’s friend Gina as the killer but Carly knows she is being set up. With a theater full of suspects Carly has plenty of people to grill. Then she learns that it may be someone from the victim’s past that did him in. Carly is going to hold everyone’s feet to the fire to prove Gina’s innocence but she may die trying.
I really enjoy the characters Ms. Reilly has created for this series, they feel like old friends. Carly has a huge heart and loves serving up grilled cheese to the masses. Ari and Carly are getting their new home all decked out for the holiday but aren’t getting too much wedding planning done. Hopefully, after the holidays, they will start to firm things up. Carly is surrounded by a great staff who are also friends. Her former assistant manager and new grill cook, Valerie recently married the chief of police, Fred Holloway. Her new assistant manager Nina is getting comfortable in her new job. Server Suzanne, the proud mom of nine-year-old Josh, rounds out the crew and isn’t afraid to throw her two cents in on any topic. Carly’s BFF Gina was in hot water after being cast as a caroler in the A Christmas Carol production but her stationary store has a huge order of invitations for a “fancy-schmancy” New Year’s Eve party to keep her busy and her boyfriend Zach to lean on. Carly’s sister Norah even lent a hand in Carly’s investigation. A big treat in this story was that former grill cook and friend Grant was home for the holidays and asked to work and he was definitely needed. All the characters feel true to life and grow in realistic ways.
The “magnificent” Flinthead Opera House had been a dilapidated farmhouse when Nate Carpenter’s family undertook its huge renovation. It is an interesting location for a murder with its massive and confusing layout of rooms, hallways, the stage, and many exits. How did the killer do what they did and get away unseen? Did they blend in? or did they sneak out in the chaos? Carly did her best to follow each clue and get answers to her questions. Her observation skills are excellent but putting what she has seen into context took a bit. Eatery regular and publisher of the town’s free paper, Don Frasco is always a good source for information. A piece of evidence by Norah moved the case along but it didn’t reveal the murderer. That came later and both Carly and I were surprised. Nicely plotted Ms. Reilly.
As always the offerings at the Grilled Cheese Eatery make my mouth water. This time there was an unusual sandwich that was very fitting for the Christmas season. In Scrooge’s Redemption Nina has found the perfect way to use a typically scorned Christmas classic and transformed it into something so yummy. Grant shows off what he is learning in culinary school too with some festive appetizers. Recipes for both are included at the end of the book.
You Feta Watch Out, which I think should be followed by You Cheddar Not Cry, was a wonderfully entertaining Christmas cozy that I just had to squeeze in before moving on to non-holiday reads. Everything about it is cozy, from the small town of Balsam Dell to the close-knit cast of characters and the mystery that will make you think. It is all entangled with enough Christmas spirit to get you into the holiday mood whether you read it in December or July. I am very excited for this series to continue.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
It's always fun to return to Vermont and visit with Carly and the team at the Grilled Cheese Eatery. This time, our mystery hits us right out of the gate, Carly has joined her sister Norah and her boyfriend Nate at his family's new theater, where they are performing a dress rehearsal of A Christmas Carole. When the main character has a meltdown and they take a break, there is much speculation. Carly catches up with her friend Gina, who has a role as a caroler, and learns that the man is very unpleasant and has not been very nice to Gina. As they settle back to start the show, the lead character is found dead, and the investigation is on! We get an interesting mystery set during the holidays, with a festive backdrop and Carly trying to stay out of it all while planning her wedding, adjusting to changes in her staff, and enjoying her new home with Ari. As always, we get a charming small town, a great cast of characters, and delicious grilled cheese treats, all with holiday decorations. You will definitely want to visit a while! Thank you Netgalley and Beyond the Page for the ARC of this book. This was an honest review.
What could be better than grilled cheese and Christmas? In addition to her friends and family, Carly's grilled cheese shop created a festive atmosphere. Along with the tasty and unique grilled cheese. Though I wasn't a fan of the plot with the mystery set being a play of "A Christmas Carol", I found the characters intriguing. "Scrooge" is the most irritating character in the play, and Carly cannot let her best friend take the blame for his murder. After a determined Carly solved it, I couldn't help feeling sympathy for the killer.
#YouFetaWatchOut #NetGalley is a perfectly entertaining holiday cozy mystery. Carly is looking forward to the holidays until her friend becomes a murder suspect. The story revolves around A Christmas Story, and when someone knocks off a real scrooge, Carly has her work cut out for her to help solve this murder.
I really liked this story, it is a fantastic addition to the series, which is one of my favorites. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
Another good one from The Grilled Cheese Mystery series. It's Christmas time and the local theater is putting on "A Christmas Carol". Just like in the last book, an unkind to many person winds up dead. Carly, along with her sister and some friends, try putting the pieces together. I'll admit, this one stumped me. I definitely had my eye on someone else. I love this series, sadly, this is the last book so far. I really hope there's more. There seems to be more to write about. I recommend this series. Happy reading! 🌲🍕
What a wonderful addition to this series! I loved seeing the gang back together again and I liked seeing more of Carly and Norah together that was really nice. I love sisterly love. The mystery was so good too. Solid lots of red herrings. When it was solved I was surprised, I did t think it was going to be the person it was and maybe cause of the state of my life I was truly singing he had it coming. If I was on that jury I’d vote not GULITY. And last but not least maybe just a little too little Havarti! Thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
"You Feta Watch Out” the 5th instalment in A Grilled Cheese Mystery series by Linda Reilly set in the town of Balsam Dell, Vermont. Humbug! leads to Homicide! Christmas in the close-knit community of Balsam Dell promises to be especially festive for Carly Hale this year when a prominent theater company comes to town to stage A Christmas Carol. With her friend still on the hook, Carly will have to sort out past misdeeds from those of the present, even as her pursuit of the killer scares the dickens out of her . . .
I really like the characters in this series and they are what have made me fall in love with it. Especially the Protagonist Carly, her bff Gina, and her co-workers Suzanne, Valerie, Nina and Don. We can’t forget Carly’s family, Ari with Christmas and the wedding approaching I believe we will see more of them going forward. I really like the new member of the team Nina and could she have a soft spot for a certain journalist…
The mystery was interesting and there are plenty of red herrings, and twists to keep you wanting to find out what will happen next.
I read the book in one day, but you will crave a grilled cheese while reading the book, I know I did. Luckily there are recipes at the back.
I cant wait for the 6th instalment and the wedding. I highly recommend this to cozy lovers.
I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from Beyond the Page and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
You Feta Watch Out is the newest book in the Grilled Cheese Mystery series. These books always entertain me and have me longing for a grilled cheese sandwich! In this book, Carly Hale, owner of a grilled cheese eatery, and the rest of Balsam Dell, Vermont are excited that a production of A Christmas Carol has come to town. Carly's best friend Gina Tomasso even has a minor role in the play. Gina loves being able to perform, but she and others in the cast are being bullied by the obnoxious actor who plays Jacob Marley. When Jacob is killed, Gina becomes the prime suspect so Carly steps away from the grill to investigate.
This is such a fun series and I've enjoyed getting to know Carly and the rest of the characters in this series. I liked that A Christmas Carol play is part of the setting, although it did take some of the time away from getting to see Carly working in the shop. However, the investigation kept me guessing and the solution was unexpected. I love the friendships between the characters in this series and look forward to more from this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page publishing for the review ebook copy. My review is voluntary and unbiased.
A touring theater company has come to Balsam Dell to perform A Christmas Carol, and the residents of the town are excited to see the show. The actor playing Scrooge, though, is as crotchety as the character, so it’s no surprise when he is found dead. When Carly learns that her friend Gina is at the top of the police’s suspect list, she sets out to find the killer, and to prove that her friend is being framed.
I have enjoyed the earlier books in this series, so was excited to learn that the series was continuing. I like Carly and her friends, and would love to spend the holidays in a small town like Balsam Dell. We’ve seen the opening of a lot of food establishments in our area that specialize in a very limited menu – only donuts, only cheesecakes, only Bundt cakes, for example – but I still wonder how long an eatery like Carly’s will thrive with such narrow-minded offerings.
We never got to know the murder victim before his body was found, but it was obvious that he was not well-liked and that he was a nasty piece of work. Accordingly, there was a long list of suspects to consider, and it was hard to narrow that list down to a manageable number of names. I didn’t figure out who the culprit was until it became obvious, and even then I was surprised. Given the character, the motive made complete sense.
If the series continues, I will gladly read the next book. I’d love to find out what happens next with Carly, Nate, Gina and the rest.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
"You Feta Watch Out (Grilled Cheese Mysteries #5)" by Linda Reilly got a bit Christmas and a bit theatre related. While at a dress rehearsal for A Christmas Carol, Carly's friend stumbles upon the really dead Marley. So, of course, between that and having argued with the victim, her friend is a suspect.
The victim had a few enemies or potential enemies he could have. I honestly didn't have any one particular person in mind as the culprit. I was a little surprised when it got to the reveal.
Christmas in Balsam Dell promises to be festive for Carly Hale when a theater company comes to town to stage A Christmas Carol. But Scrooge is not the most ill-tempered character in the production, as actor Prescott Lennon proves when he begins berating everyone else in the cast for their poor theatrics. When his behavior threatens the production, someone decides to resolve matters with a fatal solution, and frames Carly’s friend Gina for the murder. With her friend on the hook, Carly will have to sort the truth from fiction, even as her pursuit of the killer scares the dickens out of her. This festive cozy mystery was full of wonderful characters and dastardly suspects. I love reading about Carly and her grilled cheese eatery. I admit to having a grilled cheese while reading this story, and there are wonderful recipes found in back of the book. The plot was full of misdirection that kept me turning the pages trying to figure out whodunit. I was surprised by the identity of the true culprit. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. Thanks to NetGalley and Beyond The Page Publishing for this advanced reader's copy. This review is my honest opinion.
I love when a holiday themed book involves A Christmas Carol as part of the plot. So setting the murder at the play’s rehearsal is perfect. Carly is a good lead, smart & hardworking & I think readers will have no problem relating to her. The best part of the series is her restaurant, it makes for a perfect hub to bring in characters & to learn important information to help solve the mystery. This is one of my favourites in the series.
This will give you all the warm & cozy vibes, especially when it comes to describing the food. So definitely curl up with a grilled cheese & this book for a peaceful afternoon.
Big thanks to Netgalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the ARC of this book for an honest review.

You Feta Watch Out is the fifth installment of the Grilled Cheese Mysteries set in Balsam Dell, Vermont and featuring Carly Hale, owner of Carly's Grilled Cheese Eatery. It's the holidays and Carly is enjoying a dress rehearsal of the Christmas Carol at the Flinthead Opera house with her sister Norah. Carly's tenant and best friend Gina Tomasso is playing one of the carolers
Prescott Lennon who is portraying Jacob Marley, walks offstage mid scene claiming that he can't work with the other cast members. But murmurs in the audience suggest the others can't work with him. When Prescott turns up dead in his dressing room fingers point to Gina because the man had been bullying her - saying her voice was similar to hen scratch. Carly finds herself trying to track down a killer alongside her fiance Ari Mitchell and the gang at the Eatery.
A delightful afternoon read that will put you in a holiday mood (and also craving grilled cheese). A cast of returning characters, a cozy small town, just the right amount of romance and of course a furry canine round out a fantastic addition to the series. l really enjoy this series as I live in a small town in Southern Vermont and the author references my two neighboring towns. Now only if someone would actually open a grilled cheese shop!
I received an advanced copy of You Feta Watch Out from NetGalley via Beyond the Page Books. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.
Fun cozy mystery at Christmas time in Vermont. The local theater is showing the play A Christmas Carol when during final rehearsals murder takes place. Carly is busy planning her wedding and running her restaurant, but when her best friend becomes the main suspect she decides to investigate herself. Lots of suspects, and mysteries besides the murder are figured out and solved. Nice well told story with good characters and world building. Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page publishing for this early advanced copy!
Another delicious mystery from one of my top five cozy series. The characters are interesting and the whodunit is well paced and kept me guessing. A well rounded crafted mystery. I look forward to reading the next book in the series! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Linda Reilly for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for You Feta Watch Out coming out November 19, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I’ve read the book right before this one. I really love this series! Cozy mysteries are one of my favorite genres! I really loved that they incorporated a Christmas Carol in this book. Carly is a fun character and she has a lot of supportive people in her life. I loved the mystery. I think it’s perfect for the holidays. I love the food involved as well. I would definitely check out more books by this author!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy Christmastime mysteries!
Carly and Ari are in the early stages of planning their wedding. But first, the holidays, their new home and a Christmas play. When Gina, Carly's friend, discovers one of the leads dead in his dressing room, Gina becomes a suspect. Carly begins asking questions and finds herself in the midst of the investigation. I appreciate the balance the author creates between the grilled cheese shop and trying to find answers. A great read and I hope more are to come!
I am just not enjoying the series anymore. Definitely going to give up after this one. To me it felt like the story was dragged out. It was made to feel as if the police couldn’t solve the murder on their own. And the murder would not be solved without Carly. There were too many characters that were introduced too quickly and all at the same time. Which made the story very confusing for me. Time to move on to other books.
They say Christmas in the close-knit community of Balsam Dell promises to be especially festive for Carly Hale this year, and it certainly is festive...and deadly. When an actor from the production of "A Christmas Carol" is found dead in his dressing room, Carly knows it wasn't her best friend, Gina, who was accused of the murder, that did it. Serving up delicious grilled cheese while nosing around for clues comes a little easier when her friends offer to help her look for clues. With a healthy dose of Christmas cheer, "You Geta Warch Out" is one a sweet holiday cozy mystery. #YouFetaWatchOut #Netgalley
Another great installment in this wonderful series. A local opera house is staging A Christmas Carol. Carly's friend Gina is a member of the chorus The lead actor in the play playing Jacob Marley is murdered. Gina becomes a suspect along with several other people. Carly investigates to help clear her friends name. I loved the whole investigation and I definitely didn't see who the killer was.
Once again, Linda Reilly hit it out of the park with a fun and tasty whodunit, all set in beautiful Vermont. The author keeps you guessing until the end, the way all good mysteries should. Keep 'em coming!
You Feta Watch Out is the 5th wonderful book in Linda Reilly's Grilled Cheese Mysteries. The characters are warm and likable and the cozy mystery kept me guessing. True book takes place just before Christmas. Carly Hale owns a restaurant that specializes.in unique grilled cheese sandwiches and soups. The local theater is putting on A Christmas Carol. Carly's friend Gina has a small part so Carly is invited to a dress rehearsal. During the rehearsal, an unpopular actor causes problems and then ends up dead. Gina is a suspect so Carly does some investigating. The theater group are primarily the suspects. The mystery played out nicely and without peril or suspense. Carly and her fiance Ari are decorating their house for Christmas. They are a cute couple along with Carly's sister Norah and Nate and Gina and Zach. Restaurant friends Val, Suzanne, Nina and Grant add to the story as well. All of the main characters add warmth and depth to the book and make it so enjoyable. I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley and Beyond The Page and I voluntarily leave this review. #YouFetaWatchOut #GrilledCheeseMysteries #NetGalley #BeyondThePage #LindaReilly
It's Christmas in Balsam Dell. When one of the actors for the production of A Christmas Carol is found dead, Carly is pulled into the investigation because her best friend is the prime suspect. Carly knows Gina didn't do it, so proving it is at the top of Caryl's list. There are a number of suspects because the victim wasn't very nice. Hopefully Carly can get the killer all tied up in a bow for the police before Christmas.
3.5/5 --- I really enjoy this cozy series. I'd love to frequent that grilled cheese shop. Good holiday themed cozy mystery that added some good character development for our favs.
I REALLY HOPE THIS ISN'T THE END OF THIS TRULY AMAZING SERIES!
SERIES PREMISE: In this series we follow Carly Hale who runs a Grilled Cheese Eatery in Balsm Dell, Vermont, with cute appearances by her dog Harvati. IN THIS BOOK: Carly and her sister attend the Christmas Carol Dress Rehearsal at the Opera House when suddenly everything is stopped over some concerns. This is followed by a scream and it's annouced that the guy who played Marley is now dead! Carly's friend Gina, who was also in the play, is accused of his murder. So Carly dons her sleuthing cap one last time to ensure her friends safety and proove her innocence.
THOUGHTS: I gave every book in the series 5 stars. I've given this one 4 stars however. It just lacked in the culinary department for me. I'm not saying there isn't any culinaryness (because there is) but normally there is a lot more. I found it cute that it was set at Christmas time and very much enjoyed my time with Carly, Ari and Harvati. I thought the mystery was intriguing but didn't like the reveal. In saying that I really hope we get more from the series because it truly is one of my all time faves.
