The moment he laid eyes on her, he knew that the fierce, deadly beauty before him would be his future queen.
She was bold, strong, and stubborn as could be, with a temper unmatched by any—a fitting partner for the despised king of darkness.

The woman was lost, running from her decided fate, searching for a purpose in life. But what she didn’t know was that all he could think about was how he wanted to be the reason she chose to stay.
Hopefully, one day, she could see what he had to offer her. And maybe, if she felt he was worthy enough, he would become her king of darkness.

Book Review 🪻Wolfsbane by C. Hebert

I finally devoured Wolfsbane, the prequel to Death Cap, and my little death cap heart is screaming
This dark fantasy of Morel and Hesper answered so many of the questions I’d been clutching since book one like ripping the bandaid off my soul and whispering, “you wanted the truth of where it started didn’t you?”

Is it as good as Death Cap? No. But is it equally beautiful? Abso-freaking-lutely.
We got heartbreak. We got fast-paced action. We got a bittersweet sacrifice that had me ugly crying into my sweater. And, of course, MORE delicious magics to feed my obsession with the deathcaps.

Honestly, this book has me ready to start growing mushrooms and wolfsbane in my backyard just to give a little ode to this story.
A beautifully haunting prequel that hurts, heals, and lingers.

Dark fantasy lovers, come suffer with me.

This was a perfect little prequel to the events of Death Cap. This is a love story during tumultuous war times. A dark fantasy with just the right spice to plot ratio. I absolutely adore Hester and Morel together. They are equals in all ways. HIGHLY recommend 🖤

I absolutely fell in love with Morel and Hesper in Death Cap and was so excited they were getting their own story. I love their chemistry, relationship, and passion for each other.

Hesper is a badass, and I loved her even more in this one. It was fast-paced and everything I hoped for!

This book is the prequel to Death Cap. The love story of Morel and Hesper.

It was sooo good! Their love was so beautiful, happy tears! 💜

Hesper is ahhhmazing! Total badass, Queen of Darkness. 🔥

Orion and Dr. Altair are the best!
Not of the same blood but a true father & brother to Morel than his own.

“This is the story of a love of darkness. A love so strong, death could not break it.”

WOW! This was a phenomenal prequel story for Death Cap. It was an intense, action packed and suspenseful story that had me devouring it as quickly as possible.

I absolutely loved Morel and Hesper in Death Cap, but learning how they became a couple made me fall so much more in love with them. Their connection was definitely otherworldly and their chemistry was absolutely explosive.

Hesper is the perfect Queen for the King of Darkness!!

Filled with danger, suspense, betrayal, secrets, passion and an undeniable love that nothing would destroy!

Absolutely beautifully written! Loved it.

“The goddess herself could not have prepared me for you. You came into my life, a life full of darkness, and pulled my soul from the shadows and into the moonlight.”

“There is no cure for wolfsbane poisoning. Once it lures you in with its beauty, it grips your soul with its scent until it drags it to hell, leaving nothing but your flesh and bones. It possesses you as you fall under its spell.”

“She was beautiful and strong, like the flower she loved so dearly. My own wolfsbane.”

I thought I couldn’t love Hesper and Morel more than I already did, but Wolfsbane secured their spot in my heart. Hesper is such a badass FMC, and Morel is her king of darkness who would burn the world for her. *sigh* I could read a whole series based on them.

As always, I am in awe with C. Hebert’s ability to pack so much into her novellas.

I loved this prequel of Death Cap. I teared up a few times at the words that were said between Morel and Hesper. I’ve always had a fascination with night: stars, moon, you name it. My own wedding dress was covered in stars. Sure it might be a fantasy romance— but it felt like a glimmer of my own. 🥹⭐️ I loved this story so much.

🌕 Wolfsbane by C. Herbert is a gripping, dark fantasy romance that dives into forbidden desires, fierce loyalty, and secrets lurking under moonlight.

Hesper (FMC):

Hesper is a fiery, no-nonsense heroine who carries both scars and strength. She’s determined, fierce, and unapologetically herself. 🖤🔥 Her banter with Morel will make you laugh, swoon, and occasionally scream, “JUST KISS ALREADY!” 😤💋

Morel (MMC):

Morel, the brooding softy with a tenderness for his people, is equal parts dangerous and delectable. 😈💔 His devotion to Hesper is intense—sometimes toeing the line between protective and possessive—but, oh, the way he says her name? Chef’s kiss. 🥵✨

The Romance:

Think tension you can cut with a knife. 🗡️ The chemistry between Hesper and Morel crackles like firewood under a full moon. 🪵🔥 Every look, every touch, every heated argument carries a promise of something deeper. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but you’ll love every twist and turn. 🎢❤️

The Plot:

Filled with danger, betrayal, and secrets that could tear their world apart or bring it together under one throne, the stakes couldn’t be higher. From garden of shadows 🌲🌫️ to starry night skies🌌, the atmosphere is as hauntingly beautiful as the story itself.

Why You’ll Love It
• 🌒 Dark, atmospheric vibes.
• 💎 Complex, well-written characters.
• 💥 High stakes and pulse-pounding action.
• 🥀 A romance that is both passionate and tender.
If you’re a fan of regal vibes with a paranormal twist, Wolfsbane will have you begging for more. ✨

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨/5 (with bonus points for all the heart-clutching, gasp-worthy moments). 🖤🌕

Cyn has already become an auto-buy author for me but man, I can’t wait to see what else she gives us this year!

This is a sequel to Death Cap so you should really read that one first (if you haven’t already). I am obsessed with books that involve mushrooms.

“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. 𝘈 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨, 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘪𝘵.”

I forgot how much I loved Death Cap, Morel, and Hesper! I instantly fell back in love with this world and these characters and I’m so glad Cyn gave us this story. I won’t say much because it’s a sequel but also a prequel but I loved it. 🥹

It’s a breathtaking story that’s both beautiful and gut wrenching! Her use of Wolfsbane in the story was again so clever just like Amanita in Death Cap.

I loved the views of light and dark in this one too. Morel and Hesper’s chemistry was fire from the beginning. A story filled with adventure, tension, revenge, and a love like no other. I cannot begin to describe why Morel is THE man.

“𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘰𝘯, 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧, 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥, 𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦. 𝘐 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘏𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯. 𝘔𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘧𝘦.”

Seriously, if you’re looking for a fairly quick (completed) and fully immersive dark fantasy duet that’s atmospheric with literally (but not really) a true love that’s to die for, these two novellas are the books you NEED!

A sequel that is a prequel. I absolutely loved book 1, Death Cap, and was anxiously awaiting book 2. When it came available, I could not get my hands on it fast enough... and it did NOT disappoint. Filled with unspoken and spoken love, self-sacrifice, touch her and d!e, kick a$$ FMC, darkness and triumph, this story was beautiful in every way.

As I already mentioned, this story takes place prior to book 1 and follows both Morel, the King of Darkness and Hesper, daughter of Hellbore. Although Grisett, the kingdom of darkness, is not an ancient kingdom, and its king is not divinely placed, it flourishes none the less. Morel, the king of darkness, is beloved by his people and is known for showing his enemies what true darkness can be. The only kingdom to openly accept Morel and people, offer trade and serve as an ally is Hellbore, who is savagely attacked by Boletus and his kind. The King and Queen of Hellbore sacrificed themselves to see that their only daughter escapes his mad clutches. As fate has the two royals crossing paths, they cannot feel but drawn to each other and see a kindred spirit. With the opportunity to see that both of their kingdoms are saved and never harmed again, the two must make the ultimate sacrifice... blood but not death. Can they make this sacrifice, or is the toll too great?

I was captivated and completely sucked in from page one. Beautifully written, short and easy to read, I was able to breeze right through and have it haunt my waking thoughts. I am obsessed with the writings of C. Hebert and she is definitely one of my auto-buy authors!!

“You came into my life, a life full of darkness, and pulled my soul from the shadows and into the moonlight.”

This completely exceeded every single one of my expectations! I fell in love with Hesper and Morel in Death Cap, but it grew even more after reading how their love story began. I am OBSESSED with them! I love that it took time for their love to blossom. This story makes the events in Death Cap make so much more impactful.

Hesper is THAT GIRL! I love how feisty she is. She is truly a warrior queen and I loved every second of it! And MOREL?! This freaking man had me absolutely FERAL! He was so obsessed with her and I could not get enough! I loved that he never once tried to change her and just embraced who she was and graver her the space she needed to shine. The scene where they meet for the first time had me giggling and kicking my feet😂

THEIR VOWS!! Omg my heart was bursting! The love and devotion they have for one another is truly unmatched. The sacrifices they made for their kingdom?! I was floored! These two hold a very special place in my heart and I honestly couldn’t recommend this duet enough.

🌙 5 Stars for Wolfsbane by C. Hebert: Deadly, Sexy, and Absolutely Unputdownable! 🌸

This book? Straight-up lethal in the best way. Wolfsbane is like that mysterious stranger in a dark bar — impossible to ignore, dangerously alluring, and guaranteed to leave you wrecked. C. Hebert didn’t just write a story; they crafted a vibe. And that vibe? Killer.

The wolfsbane metaphor? Chef’s kiss. This book is a soft lavender bloom with fangs — gorgeous, intoxicating, and ready to ruin you. Once you crack open the first page, it’s game over. You’re hooked. And let me tell you, the plot is pure moonlit chaos. It sneaks up on you, wraps its velvet petals around your throat, and doesn’t let go until you’re sobbing in the best possible way.

Every chapter is dripping with mystery and danger, and the pacing? Flawless. Just when you think you’ve caught your breath, BAM — another twist. It’s basically emotional cardio. And the writing? Smooth, seductive, and SO good you’ll want to tattoo whole sentences on your soul.

If you’re into dark, dangerous, and drop-dead gorgeous stories, Wolfsbane is your new obsession. Go ahead, let it wreck you. You’ll thank me later. 🌕

Gosh I just loved getting to see Morel and Hesper again in Wolfsbane, Book 2 in the Deadly Duet. What started from an April Fool’s story in Death Cap last year, led to a demand of the people (including me) for more of their story and did Cyn deliver. In Wolfsbane, we get to see how Morel and Hesper met and fell in love prior to what befalls Hesper in Death Cap.

Morel is a new king to Grisset and though he may be a devil in darkness he has a softer side and cares for all those in his kingdom. When one night he is tending to his mother’s death caps he comes to face to face with a fiery woman who stops him in his tracks.

Hesper has taken refuge in Grisset, after she was being forced into a betrothal against her and her parents wishes, when her kingdom is taken over. When Morel discovers the truth of her identity he vows to protect her and help her get revenge.

While they are attracted to each other, they slowly start developing feelings for each other as Hesper trains Morel’s army and they work together to get Hesper back on her throne.

Morel is a truly a cinnamon roll for her and just wants to see her happy. He may come off as all darkness but to her he is her light in the dark. All the pretty things are the most deadly and Hesper is no exception, especially if you touch Morel.

We are taken back to Morel and Hesper meeting and falling in love. Actually set before Death Cap. When I go back to reread, and I will, I will read Wolfsbane first then Death Cap

After Morels mother’s death and his banishment form the Kingdom he leaves with some of the people who were loyal to him and the Queen.

Hesper is put in an impossible situation. Marry the man who had invaded her kingdom to save her people. She’ll do it. Or try to. Boletus is horrible, self centered and vile. A future Queen always has to make sacrifices, but, yikes…. this guy…..

I love how drawn to Morel’s Death Cap garden she is. It becomes her sanctuary, both of their sanctuaries. Even when she was ill in Dryade and a few of the Death Caps remained from the Queens garden, part of her recognized them and she was pulled to them like they were trying to help her break through the fog.

Morel treats Hesper like an equal from the moment they meet. They are intrigued by each other, but are both too stubborn to admit their feelings. The tension between them is so hot. He loves watching her train his troops and showing her skills. He is very proud of her.

A worthy prequel to Death Cap, which I loved! The chemistry between the characters, the true love story, and the amazing visuals make this a dark fantasy one to read.
You learn about Morels' rise to King of his own Kingdom, the Kingdom Of Darkness. More about Hesper's origin and her wrath. Their meet cute and how he offers her protection if she'll train his army for their revenge. You're introduced to a few new characters like Boletus, who is a diabolical villain who thinks he can get his way and his pet, Hystrix, whose whip does much damage. Then there's a few returning characters that you'll recognize! As this tale gets interesting with a kidnapping, a uniting of the kingdoms, a battle for love, a Kingdom burnt to the ground, and a king who bows to no one but his queen. With a HEA, this gave me reason to reread Death Cap!!
... What to Expect ...
Dark fantasy, romantasy, prequel, runaway Bride, instalove, morally grey mmc, arranged marriage, found family, trauma, revenge, sibling rivalry, angst, deadly mushrooms, poisonous wolfsbane, blood oath, hint of spice, protect her, hea, and much more!

A perfect prequel to Death Cap, giving us the story of Hesper and Morel's journey of revenge, acceptance and love.

Hesper is an absolute fierce heroin that doesn't need saving. I applaud her strength to be independent in a world where women are seen as secondary objects. (I honestly have a crush on her, she is a bad ass in her own right.) She is on a quest to seek help for her Kingdom as she plots her revenge.

Morel is the feared Dark King with a gooey center. His devotion to his Kingdom never faltered accepting his lonesome fate until he encounters a runaway bride that will challenge his beliefs. He allies with Hesper, altering their fates and hearts forever.

This is not your typical love story, but it absolutely works for them. The yearning and adventure are woven masterfully in under 200 pages. (que the swooning) I was cheering hard for their happily ever after.

I highly recommend you read Death Cap to really appreciate this amazing love story.

*ARC Review*

I'm extremely late getting this review up as I've been unwell with the flu and other family matters, but...

Having read Death Cap last year, I have to say this dark fantasy romance novella prequel was phenomenal!

C.Hebert has an undeniable way of curating a story that flawlessly enmeshes a story that is full of beauty, darkness, and revenge.

The world building and character development from what we already partially knew were amazing. Cyn was able to increase the relationship development and the dynamic between Hesper and Morel, but also between the people of their lands - The Kingdom of Darkness.

The story was captivating and intriguing throughout, despite being a novella, the worldbuilding and character development was rich and immersive. Another stunning addition to the dark fantasy romance genre.

“A true king lives not for himself, but his people, sacrificing his own life to protect them.”
“Despite what you might think, I’m not some damsel in distress, oh mighty king of darkness.”
“Everyone has secrets buried in their souls. Some of us hide them better than others, waiting for the day another soul comes along, curious to know more.”

I read Death Cap earlier this year, enjoyed it, and wished to learn more about the characters. This short novella was the perfect answer to my wishes. I loved learning more about Morel and Hesper.

The world building and character development were, once again, so well written. Loved how strong Hesper was as a character. She truly didn’t need anyone to save her. Loved the relationship development and dynamic between her and Morel.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

Must read! Must read! Must read! All the romantasy lovers need this one! It’s the age old tale of boy meets girl, they fall in love, and plan a little revenge. But the way C. Hebert writes it, it’s crackling chemistry, the best dark vibes, a little awe and wonder, absolute rage, and nothing but completely spectacular as the King of Darkness finds his Queen of the Night, kingdoms burn to the ground, and a new reign begins.
This is a shorter read but it gives you a ton, is written ridiculously well, and has this haunting, ethereal, dark feel to it that sucks you right in, keeps you hanging on every word, and makes the romance of it insanely beautiful. I freaking love these characters, Morel and Hesper are definitely dark, totally unafraid to kill, maim, and destroy, but they are equally honest with huge hearts, an understanding of what a ruler should be, and the literal perfect match for each other. Just another insanely good read from C. Hebert!

A round of applause for C Hebert on another masterpiece. I have absolutely no idea how this woman creates these short stories that are high fantasy level and done so effortlessly, but she never ceases to amaze me by doing it each time. Under 200 pages and I just read one of the coolest and most romantic stories in fantasy to date. You get YEARNING, a man who yearns for his queen, you get touch her and bye bye, you get revenge, you get a fmc so strong she saves him and gives major "I am no man" vibes. I'm telling you, there is so so much packed in here, you're going to be blown away. Not to forget to mention this was like the princess bride level storytelling with an infamous "as you wish". Gah I need to stop for I'm going to spoil it. Seriously read it. You won't regret it.

THANK YOU C HEBERT for the ARC. Truly.

I adored how this book was a prequel to Death Caps and we were able to see how Hesper and Morel met and feel in love. Something that I think is truly unique is this duet is that these two books could be read in any order, either by publication date or chronologically, and the reader would experience a love story that defied the odds and bloomed in the cover of darkness, under the moon.
Something that I really appreciated about this book was the subtlety of it - the plot arc, world building, and character development were nuanced and gently drew the reader in. With that said, this book is not lacking in action and drama - there were battles, revenge, and moments of profound connection between Hesper and Moral. I loved their story and these two books are going on the short-list for rereads. Giving this book 5 starts because 6 isn't an option.

Wolfsbane is the dreamy prequel to Death Cap by C Hebert. I just love everything about Morel and Hesper‘s journey. They have so much sexual tension, feisty banter, and divine chemistry. This dark fantasy is a beautifully written story of betrayal, self acceptance, found family, emotional growth, and satisfying revenge. Morel is the king of darkness, struggling with his inner demons but has a huge heart and is ready to sacrifice and go to battle for his people. Hesper is fierce, determined and strong in who she is and in her beliefs. When the king of darkness finds his soulmate queen of the night a true force to be reckoned with is born, and they are to be feared. So much story, action and emotion packed into this novella. It is a beautiful romantasy love story that I highly recommend.

This is the final book in the Deadly Duet. This book was so much more than I truly expected. I don’t like to spill secrets so I can’t explain exactly what I mean…You need to read the first book “Death Cap” to understand the twist in this book.
I already loved the FMC and the MMc from “Death Cap” but this book made me so much more invested in their story! This book explains so much of who they are. It also helped explain what motivated them to become the people they are now. This is truly an epic love story and totally unexpected.
Thank you, C. Hebert for such a wonderful read! JUst when I think I know how your mind thinks, you give you this beautiful story to read and bask in! This is why you will always be on my TBR List!

This is Hesper’s and Morel’s villain origin story. The story of runaway bride, love, sacrifice, and murderous revenge. Hesper is fierce and will burn down cities for her King and her kingdom. Morel finds his Queen and she bows for no one, including him. Together they will tear apart kingdoms, who cross them.

This book was just as cute as the first one. Excellently written, easy to follow, and keeps you engaged. My personal opinion, if it wasn’t for the revealed snippets in this book I would say read it first, and then Death Cap.

It was a nice change reading a duet in reverse. Honestly never thought of this and it was a nice way to end the duet.

If you are down with the FMC being the heroine in both books, this duet is for you.
