One viral confrontation could destroy everything I’ve built. And at the center of it all? The team captain and that sinful smirk.
As the Houston Heatwave’s PR manager, control is my game. Then there’s Keelan Landry—team captain, my best friend’s cocky brother… And the one man who never fails to push my every button.
Where I’m calculative and fierce, he’s playful and carefree. Except when my celebrity ex drags me into the spotlight. And Keelan steps in—a little too fiercely.
Now, his career as hockey’s golden boy is on the line. And it’s my job to fix this mess.
Hockey is his life. Putting out fires is mine. But the one fire I can’t seem to manage is the one raging between us.
Late-night strategy sessions… closed-door meetings… he shows me who's the real boss. And I realize how little control I really have when it comes to his charm.
I’ve kept my heart under lock and key–but the off-limits player might just shatter it open. Along with every secret I’ve worked to keep buried deep inside.
Penalty Shots is a spicy, golden retriever/black cat, pro hockey workplace romance. It’s the fifth book in the Heatwave Hockey Series and can be enjoyed as a standalone with a guaranteed happily ever after.
I absolutely enjoyed Penalty Shots! This is more than a hockey romance and it definitely took me on an emotional ride. Keelan and Rina’s backstory and their past truly makes this book especially with their flashback chapters as we learn about their history. The way Keelan had always protected Rina was perfection. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it! I received a complementary copy from the author.
could not finish. i had no idea what was happening, it felt like i was dropped into a story that i knew nothing about. why do they hate each other? what happened between them that keeps being hinted at? WHAT IS GOING ON? i gave it a chance but once i got to thirty percent complete and still had no idea anything that was happening i had to put it down.
This was the most disjointed jumble of a book ever. I feel like the story had so many holes that I couldn’t ever actually figure out what was going on. Ooooof this was bad.
So I'm late the the Heatwave Party this was my first read of this series and it slaps. I honestly did not want to put it down! It got to 1am and I was at 73% after starting to read it at like 9pm, had to force myself to sleep, but I couldn't stop thinking about Rina and Keelan.
Speaking of Rina and Keelan are just perfect for each other despite everything that happens between them from the age of 18, we do delve between the present and past flawlessly learning about what makes them who they are in the present moment. I can't say anymore without giving too much away but this is certainly a series I am going to go back and read, I am excited to learn more about the other characters whom have found their happy ever afters.
I would highly recommend you give this book a read as soon as possible, problems best to not to a me and start at book 5 as even though it can be read as a standalone it is part of an interconnected series.
For fans of Hockey Romance, Second Chances, Best Friends Brother, Found Family, Dual POV, and a little dash of Spice.
“Penalty Shots” is the fifth and final installment in the “Heatwave Hockey Series.” “Penalty Shots” is a spicy, golden retriever/black cat, pro hockey workplace romance. Rina and Keelan have know each other since they were eighteen when at university together. The timeline in this books cover both the past and the present, showing all the ups and downs of their relationship. From the moment they first met each other, something clicked between them. They were great together but when Keelan got picked up for summer training camp, she let him walk away - she did not want to stand in the way of his dreams, his future. Meanwhile, her heart was breaking.
Ten years latter and they still have not got their act together. Both are employed by the Houston Heatwave Hockey Team - Keelan is the team captain and Rina is the Public Relations Manager. He is a hopeless romantic, he wants to have a family and grow old with one woman - Rina. Keelan would give up everything, including his hockey career, for her but how does he get past her barriers. Rina is smart, sassy and strong, but is this just an illusion, hiding how she really feels? Her heart has always belonged to him. What secret is she hiding that makes her feel that a relationship would not work? Is there more going on than what she has told him? Will honesty between them give them both a chance of a future together?
“My eyes meet Keelan’s again. Those mocha eyes beg me to move, and I’m powerless against them. Before I know it–my feet are moving toward him, and my hand is wrapped in the warmth of his.”
“I've seen him dressed before. The guys are always dressed to the nines before each game. But the way he looks right now. A woman can only have so much self-control, especially if he is the person I need to stay the furthest away from.”
I absolutely loved this story - I was hooked by the first chapter. I have loved the whole series from start to finish! It is sad to say goodbye to everyone. This is a perfect love/hate relationship, with twists and turns that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. From page to page, chapter to chapter, from cover to cover - you will enjoy this love beautiful story! This book will not disappoint! Highly recommended 😊
I thought this book would be good by the look of it (I admittedly didn't read the synopsis) and low and behold it's one of three five-star books for me this year! I absolutely loved it! It gives of a vibe similar to The Deal by Elle Kennedy with the golden retriever MMC and the nervous yet boss bi*ch FMC and I'm here for it. Honestly, Garrett Graham from The Deal is one of my favorite MMCs of all contemp. romance books and now he's tied with Keelan Landry. Keelan is written so well and I love that he's romantic, sweet and a family guy without it being super overdone or super cheesy - which I've found a lot of with other authors trying to write a sports guy who isn't supposed to be a d*cik. Also, this is a hockey romance but there's no hockey really involved. One or two games are mentioned but it's not the focus of the book, which I liked. There are a lot of levels to this book, including infertility, found family, friends-to-lovers, messy/not so messy divorce, etc. I usually find that a book has to be like a billion pages to get all that in there and have it done well but Anne Martin aced it in this book and kept it around 300 pages which is perfect. Finally, the old college friends/friends to lovers situation here is stellar. Normally, I steer real far from friends to lovers because it just doesn't intrigue me but this was done SO well and the characters are well-formed, so I was actually able to connect with them. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Cat’s Stats MMC/FMC- Keelan and Rina Genre- Sports Romance Length- novel Heat- they do the things and use the P word once whilst naming parts. Series? Y Safety? YMMV (would be a spoiler) Triggers- harassment, violence, pregnancy loss, language, sex. Tropes- Second Chance, Best Friend’s Brother, Adorable Moppet, Love to Hate You, Hate to Love You, Workplace Romance Mewsings I liked that the timeline shifted between flashbacks to when they were in college and present day. I think the history went deeply into motivations. Not gonna lie, it took me a minute to warm up to Rina in the last book; she can be prickly and sometimes uptight. But this book showed her history and as soon as I saw her past, I really understood and realized that in real life, we would probably be friends. Keelan… is both fun and too much fun. He is A Lot, but he’s exactly what Rina needs and he’s such a likable character. Love that he’s a secret English nerd; it makes him hotter. Jenny was a good addition to the book as her relationship to Rina makes the book more layered. The book was both intricate and complex. I was irritated at times by Rina’s avoidance and Keelan’s blitheness, but overall I felt that it was true to the characters and thought the book was entertaining.

Penalty Shots brings the Heatwave series to a satisfying close with the long-awaited slow burn between team captain Keelan Landry and PR manager Rina. Their chemistry has simmered in the background throughout the series, and this book finally brings their tension, history, and undeniable pull to center ice.
Keelan, known for his charm and playful confidence, faces a turning point when a viral incident threatens his career. Rina, ever the professional and fiercely guarded, is tasked with damage control—except the biggest challenge isn't the press, it’s resisting the man she’s known for years. Their dynamic balances banter, emotional vulnerability, and steamy tension, offering a deeper look into two characters who have always felt more than just side players.
What makes this finale stand out is the emotional growth on both sides. Keelan matures, particularly after a pivotal conversation with Rina’s father, and Rina begins to lower the walls she’s kept up for far too long. Together, they find a rhythm that feels earned and heartfelt.
With appearances from previous couples and full-circle moments, Penalty Shots wraps up the series with warmth, humor, and a romance that’s as rewarding as it is passionate. A strong finish for a fun and heartfelt series.

Keelan and Rina
The happy end between these two was long in the making. Through the back flashes we got to see how they met and became closer despite certain circumstances and them being so different. But today Rina has to face issues that Keelan made and has to smooth them out. For the team, for him and for herself too. But neither Keelan is easy to work with nor is the new Co worker, who is a blast from the past. Keelan and Rina both are terrible at the right communication. And Rina is a pro at suppressing her true feelings, but she has a good heart. Keelan is a very smart and entertaining person. He cared for Rina longer than she knew. There are hurdles along their journey and that could make everything a little difficult, but a solution will always be found. Their happy end came in a way that was sweet because it was so unexpected. But they are perfect for each other. Sweet and entertaining Sports romance with a second chance.
I've been wanting to read Rina's story for a while, since the previous books. I loved her no bullsh*t attittude and how much power just by her hard work and respect she earned in a men's world. She was sassy, demanding, driven but at the same time wanted what all women want: to be cherished, pampered, taken cared of, protected and loved. She just believed no one would be that man. Even Keelan, since he was one of the people who made her second choice. So why would it be different now? Keelan was a happy and carefree man, with a positive attittude and who loves to have fun. In theory he is rhe complete opposite of Rina, but well... the complete each other. So when her divorce is known, and things get kind of crazy, Keelan begins to step up and makes her wonder. What if? Could they make it? can she trust her secrets with him?
I really enjoy this book and all the series, and I'm sad to see it end.
Wow I’m totally late to the party on Anne Martin’s books and the Heatwave hockey series as this is book 5!
It’s a hockey book but not totally focussed on the hockey, Keelan isn’t the usual MMC of a sports themed book, he’s fully rounded as a character isn’t being bullied headed and macho all the time. The way that he’s always been protective over Rina is lush.
I love the way that Anne writes, having the flash backs which explains their history is a really good way to understand how they got to where they are now.
Keelan & Rina’s journey to their HEA is filled with laughter and sadness, but it’s clear to see that they were always meant to be but the timing was never right.
Definitely worth a read, I’m going to go back and read books 1-4 of the series now.

OMG this was a great hockey story. It was a steamy page turner and the suspense was totally tense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn't even put it down literally. Rina and Keelan they knew each other since they were kids. But they never knew they will reconnect again that sparks were about to ignited between them. The chemistry was so strong and intense and the physical attraction was sexual tension. But did have a image he had to protected in the spotlight or was he falling n love with her after all these years . Mind blowing of action packed and drama. I highly recommend this book and you won't be disappointed. I received advance copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Trina Jones
Always back to square one, something always getting in the way. Will there ever be a positive outcome.
Keegan and Rina went full circle. Accidental coffee spill on campus, wet t-shirt, obsession years lasting. A touching read not only informing us on young ? love but also an awareness on want of a child and medical issues.
Won’t spoil, this needs to be read by readers to form their own review. This was more than a relationship/trust/friendship/expectations. It was an inner want that may not be met. This will be understood when read.
There was a lot of going back and forward though. We always went back to the age of 18.
The story is definitely one that pulls on your heart strings a bit, there's about 2/5 for spice (nothing too naughty), and the character development/changes are written so beautifully! I would LOVE to find out more about Izzy's back story if there is ever a spin off or a second book from another perspective! The friends to lovers aspect absolutely melted by heart, especially watching the vulnerability between Rina and Keelan. Making Keelan's character into a masculine yet soft man was a great take on a character who works in a rugged environment; which also compliments Rina SO well with her independent but hyperaware to her own vulnerability.
I honestly think this is the best book in the Heatwave series. Keelan was perfect! The ending was much more believable than others in the series. The plot was reeled in.
The story is dual POV with more or less dual timeline. There’s not a lot of interference from the other characters. It’s fun to have them there but they’re not a major part of the plot.
As a Puerto Rican myself, I appreciate the representation of my homeland in a positive context. The presence of the foods, the drinks (coquito and Medalla) and 53 feistiness of Rina’s mom reminded me of home so much.
TW: infertility and pregnancy loss Tropes: reverse grumpy/sunshine, found family, second chance romance
i stumbled on this one after looking for a very specific trope (I didn’t find it but this turned out to be a perfect late night read). It’s a second chance, best friend’s brother, workplace romance. It’s follows hockey star Keeland and PR Manager Rina. It flips between the present and the past, when they met at college at 18. I thought the flashbacks were incorporated in a way that was easy to follow along in the story and while being a quick read at 251 pages, still had angst, depth, and development between the characters. It’s part of a series and I will be going back and reading about the previous couples.
I just love this series. I’ve read them all and they are all special in their own way. I always love the main characters in these books. Yes, the MMCs usually starts out as a jerk, but he eventually comes around. In this story there is an unfortunate disease that plagues a character in the book. It’s a traumatic part of this book/audiobook. The main characters communicate and work through some heavy stuff and it made me a little emotional. The two have to come to some important realizations. Some parts have really good banter. And the spice is really good. This book was well written with a quick reading pace. The narrators were fantastic. I would definitely recommend this book.
Keelan is a huge golden retriever due to his past trauma while Rina is more black cat due to her circumstances. I loved the way that their college interactions were threaded into the chapter of their current situation years later. You could tell by the way that Keelan was written that he has always cared for this one woman but he had no idea why she slipped out of his life for a decade. It was heartbreaking learning why she up and left him. Though he chose to love her regardless of the things she felt made her broken.
This is Book 5 in the Heatwave Hockey Series by this author, and can be read as a standalone. It is an enemies to lovers, off limits limits romance between PR manager Rina and hockey team captain Keelan. These likeable characters, the strong connection, the sizzling chemistry, and the unique plot make for an entertaining read. It is a love story with some drama, humor, twists and turns, and appealing secondary characters to keep the reader interested. An emotional read.

Loved the story between Rina and Keelan and how it was written jumping back to when they first met to current times. It gave us more insight into their relationship and who they are as individuals. Keelan appears to be this fun loving, who cares type of personality but he is also a caring, loving person. Rina was this shy, quiet book nerd and also a strong bold woman when it comes to her work and her friends. Love all the characters around them that help build the story. Read and enjoy.
I really enjoyed this book. Rina and Keelan were meant to be! Their chemistry was undeniable, and everyone around them could see it. I liked the way their past experiences unfolded throughout the book. I liked finding out what happened as Rina and Keelan learned about each other's experiences at the time. Some parts were hard to read, make sure you read the trigger warnings because some sensitive subjects are discussed.
Back in the Heatwave Hockey world and I'm loving it. This story is about Rina and Keelan and how they navigate their jobs and their slow burn romance. With flashbacks to college connections, secrets, anger, miscommunication, her dud ex who won't quit, and Keelan and Rina's current issues- we are kept on edge. I love the found family and good friends that visit from previous books and I felt the need to read faster and yet try to stretch this great story out as long as possible.
This is book 5 in a series of interconnected standalone books. Good news, you won't feel lost if you haven't read the others, I just jumped right into this book and it's a new to me author.
I really enjoyed Rina and Keelan's story. It's obvious from the start that Keelan has strong feelings for Rina, even if it takes her a long time to come to that realization. The changes in their relationship span college through the next decade of friendship and frustrations and leads you down the winding path to their happily ever after.
Rina and Keelan have known each other for over a decade, but they never seem to find a way to be together despite the way they feel about each other. The chemistry between these two was off the charts. I enjoyed the banter between them and the added information from their past. It was emotionally charged and dealt with some serious issues. The ending was satisfying and worth the read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this next instalment in the Heatwave series! Rina and Keelan were hooked at first sight, but incidents, situations and complications kept getting in the way. The playful puppy dog Keelan had my adoration from page 1. Whereas Rina’s distance and guarding took me a while to warm up to and get me on her cheersquad. But as it all slowly comes together, this was another great journey over a decade into the lives of two destined souls. 4 ⭐️ 3.5 🌶️
I truly enjoyed this book and it was a first read for me from Anne Martin. I had to go back and start the rest of the series. There are ups and downs and in general I am not a big fan of flashbacks but truly understood the purpose. This book showed us how people change and adult relationships are so progressive from the ones as young adults.
I think that there could have been ways that the story could have been expanded more and not felt as rushed but overall it was a great read.
I absolutely loved this book! The bouncing from present to past and seeing how these two have always had that pull to each other and that timing was just never right. Seeing how they have grown and still are attracted. I couldn't put this book down!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story has so many spots of terrible miscommunications that affect the main characters in so many ways. Keelan and Rinas history is so sad both together and separately. And her ex….what a dirtbag. I love the found family and what Rina did for Keelan. And the ending….sigh….
This is a great story. It follows the relationship between Rina and Keelan, via flashbacks. I loved the emotion, the tension and how that developed between the pair of them. I also loved that Keelan was not one of those typical jocks who is so full of themselves. He cared and was romantic. This is a great read and a 5 star story!
