I'll Be Alone For Christmas: A Thriller Novella

Rate this book
I’ll Be Alone For Christmas is a suspenseful novella filled with terror, a dash of gore, and packed with Christmas spirit.

Romee's winter break was planned out months ahead. A week at a cabin in the woods sounded romantic, and maybe it was just what her boyfriend of two years needed to pop the question.

Instead, he proposed they break up, a week before they were destined to wake up Christmas morning, happier than ever. Heartbroken but undaunted, Romee embarks on a solitary journey to the remote cabin, yearning for peace and closure in the tranquil snowscape. Six nights of isolation, wine, and TV shows seemed like the perfect remedy for a breakup.

Yet, from the moment she arrives, an ominous presence clings to her. The house is old, creaking and shifting, as if harboring another occupant. Bizarre occurrences escalate as each day passes, blurring the line between reality and a nightmare, making her question everything. She is alone, right?

When Romee decides it’s time to leave the vacation rental early, it’s already too late. Snowed in and unable to escape, she has to survive the frigid conditions and limited resources... And the possibility that someone sees her when she’s sleeping and knows when she’s awake.

💬: I didn’t even know Christmas thrillers were a thing, but I’m glad it is! This is the niche type of read I was looking for. I’ll Be Alone for Christmas is Home Alone meets The Strangers. It had the perfect amount of suspense & will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what will happen next. The twist was predictable, in my opinion, but it didn’t stop me from really enjoying this book. You’ll have fun with this one! …if Christmas horror/thrillers are your thing. *slight spoiler* I was cracking up at the fact that Romee used her Stanley tumblr as a weapon. I was cheering her on the whole time. My fellow basic girls, take note. 📝 Now I’m glad I take my Stanley everywhere knowing the damage it can do if someone is trying to kill me.

2.5⭐️ I was loving this and then it kind of lost me. Super fast paced thriller that takes place around Christmas in an isolated cabin in the woods. It gave me more horror vibes than I thought it was going to be. It wasn’t bad just seemed rushed a bit.

Looking for some holiday reading that packs a punch, I turned to this novella by Kristin Mulligan. After planning a week-long romantic getaway with her boyfriend over the Christmas break, Romee is sideswiped when he ends their two-year relationship. She is distraught and still holding onto the cottage they rented, unsure what she ought to do. Unwilling to lose all the money she sunk into the place, Romee treks up there for a week to reflect and hopefully forget. Her arrival heralds a number of odd events that leave Romee with spine-tingling worries, some of which she is sure are related to something ominous. She soon wonders if she is actually alone and things eventually push her to the edge, where she is left to worry that she is being targeted by something or someone sinister. Her decision to depart is vetoed by the weather, as a massive snowstorm sets in. Now, Romee sees things that are irrefutable and is soon faced with a choice, one that could mean the end of her life. Kristin Mulligan does well with this piece and has me eager to read more!

I have always thought that Christmas was a great time to read, pulling out a book as the fire crackles and everyone is doing their own thing. Kristin Mulligan offers up a great piece that mixing the wonders of the holiday season with a sprinkling of something dark and worrisome. The narrative builds from one topic to the next, balancing the woes of the protagonist with the tension at the revelation that she is being hunted by something. Mulligan adds swift chapters to pave the way for something thrilling, though nothing is assured as Romee seeks to flee, but is kept there and her life is in peril. Great build-up creates a climactic ending that the reader is fully enveloped in, wondering if there will be something happy to end these holidays.

Characters work well in this piece, as Kristin Mulligan creates them for the reader to enjoy. There is no doubt that Romee plays a key role in the piece, though she morphs from pitiable jaded girlfriend to damsel in distress and eventually the hunted trying to stay alive. I was committed to seeing how she would grow in this short piece, soon determined that nothing and no one could stand in her way. The reader is left with a handful of others who help push things along, always with ease, and many are left to wonder where things are headed. Flavouring this story well are people of all types, which works to Mulligan’s benefit throughout the novella.

Surprises work like gifts given around this time of year, the more the merrier. Kirstin Mulligan works her magic with a number of well-placed ones to keep the story edgy, never succumbing to the need to overcompensate. There is much in the story that works well, including the twists that keep things on edge for all. I liked what she had to say and I was always looking for another issue lurking around the corner. I am eager to see where things might be headed, as Mulligan appears to have another story set in the same location, though I cannot be sure if others, like Romee, will fall into a trap not of their own making. I enjoyed this short piece and it complements other of my reading challenges quite well. Let’s see what else I can find this holiday season to keep me highly entertained.

Kudos, Madam Mulligan, for a sensationally short and impactful piece.

Been loving novellas lately and this Christmas thriller novella is just what I needed to round out my November reading month.

This was super fast paced and filled with suspense. I couldn’t put it down and the author did a great job keeping me hooked and on the edge of my seat.

I’ve seen a lot of reviews stating they felt disconnected or that it felt too rushed and when I saw that I thought, “Well, this is a novella, isn’t that what we should expect?” Anyway, keep that in mind while reading this - and any novella, really! It’s meant to be punchier and to the point quicker!

Reading the next book in this series, A CHRISTMAS TO DIE FOR! Stay tuned for my thoughts on that one…

Is it time to read Christmas books yet? No. Do I care? Absolutely not. I’ll read anything Kristin writes at the earliest opportunity. Halloween books step aside.

I’ll Be Alone For Christmas is a short, action-packed thriller novella about a young woman, newly dumped during the Christmas holidays, who decides against her better judgment to spend a week alone in a remote location in the mountains during a flurry. I devoured this in one sitting. I enjoyed the main character and her sassy inner dialogue, as well as how bad*** she was fighting for her life. Kristin’s books are always captivating and her writing style is so fun and easy to read. The chapters were short and named after Christmas songs which was so creative!

A quick read popcorn thrillers novella, however this one fell somewhat flat for me. There isn't much plot, character development or backstory. Girl gets dumped by her boyfriend just before Xmas and decides to go to the isolated cabin vacation she had planned to go with him alone. There she wallows in her sorry existence and soon realises she may not be alone in the cabin and from there is just turns into a shallow and unbelievable slasher book pretty much.

The book hooked me right from the author’s note: “To anyone who has a wild—if not slightly paranoid—imagination, too.” Yup, that’s me. Thank you. For a short novella, this book scared me so much. My heart was racing for the first 60% of it! This is also one of my biggest fears.

When the caracter said: ''He’s already in the house''. I’m done.

This holiday novella is meant to be inhaled in a single, white knuckle sitting—starting steady and atmospheric before swerving hard into crazy, gory, unhinged fun that had me grinning like a maniac. Mulligan builds the tension beautifully: a lonely cabin, a fresh breakup, a creeping sense that Romee is not alone, and then suddenly it’s full throttle chaos in the best popcorn
thriller way. Dark, bloody, claustrophobic, and absolutely not for anyone craving Hallmark sweetness, this is the perfect seasonal palate cleanser if you want your Christmas reads sharp, scary, and deliciously deranged.

What did I just read? I’m torn between 2 or 3 stars. The first 40% was actually pretty good and intriguing but then it just got completely unrealistic and weird from there. Also, I know there’s trigger warnings for gore but I really could’ve done without all the vomit scenes. Not a fan of the writing style either. This book wasn’t for me but I could see how someone else would like it.

I'LL BE ALONE FOR CHRISTMAS is a chilling winter survival story that will heighten your sense of paranoia. Romee is heartbroken, and going alone to a remote cabin doesn't sound appealing. Nonetheless, she's resilient and tries to make the best of the situation. However, there seems to be an underlying feeling of unease in the cabin. Mulligan skillfully creates a suspenseful narrative that evokes hair-raising tension and excitement. The unexplained events triggered my anxiety, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Romee's character is relatable as she deviates from the typical unreliable protagonist. She shows awareness, alertness, and, most importantly, intelligent decision-making in challenging moments.

I am unable to delve deeper into the book's plot as it is a short novella. However, I will say that it is an exceptional Christmas thriller, and I highly recommend adding it to your to-be-read list. The twist was well executed and kept me captivated until the very end. Mulligan's writing style effectively delivers the elements I seek in locked-room mysteries with a female lead that embodies likability and strength. I am now eager to explore Mulligan's future works!
