Good introduction to prepping, although, very generic and full of bullet points.

Preppers used to be weirdos in camouflage clothing who hid in the woods. Now, with weather disasters occurring with more frequency as the climate warms and puts more moisture in the air (or takes it out), a book like this could be useful to almost anyone nowadays, camo-clothing optional.

This book wisely begins by trying to calm down the reader. Good on you, author! Anyone who buys this book, including myself, is probably a little stressed about something in the news (in my case, Hurricane Helene in the United States). This book first calms the reader in order to convince them to proceed slowly and methodically in planning for whatever eventuality might occur.

Once that is out of the way, the book doesn’t go into long lists of what a person might need to buy (at least not until the halfway mark), but instead gives lists of changes a person might make to their life to be more prepared for emergencies, such as simple actions like de-cluttering one’s belongings. Instead of adding or purchasing, the author advises to first change your life to be more prepared for unexpected circumstances.

After this, the author gets into the essentials first: food, water, and first aid. The book gives options for each based on the amount of time the reader wants to prepare for, offering some options that might not be immediately obvious. And that is truly where the value of a book like this arises. The author has done all the thinking for you, and readers only have to choose the options that best suit them. The danger of disaster prepping is forgetting something obvious but essential, and this book will help the reader mitigate that risk.

The book has many other sections, but I found the section on radio communications to be especially informative, as well as the discussion of how to communicate with family and friends in the event of a communications blackout. In addition, you’ll learn how time intensive it can be to maintain your prepping—You’ll never know how much maintenance prepping takes until you read this book. Finally, there are interesting sections on how to prep with kids and seniors. In particular, the need for simpler plans with clear instructions becomes paramount.

In summary, this book will get you to think about preparing for a natural (or unnatural) disaster in ways you might not have thought about before. The author did the thinking for you and readers who get and use this book will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are not forgetting something important as they prepare for emergencies.

Practical Advice, Easy to Read

This book is not a “doom-and-gloom” “the world is ending” type of book. What it is, is a practical guide for those who want to be prepared for an emergency without becoming “survivalists” (though you can take what he says and expand upon the tips). This is how to get through a couple of days up to a few weeks when you have limited space and money to spend on prepping. Each chapter is dedicated to a different aspect: food, water, first aid, storage, etc. The language he uses is simple and easy to read and follow - almost conversational. And yet the tips are serious and helpful. He goes through specific steps and suggestions and at the end of each chapter does a quick recap highlighting the important points. I can see where this would be useful not just to urbanites, but to anyone who wants to start building their emergency supplies.

Recommended.

The author provides a great overview of things to consider for disaster prepping. The level of detail is not overly complex, and the material is easy to absorb. I would consider this book to be more an intermediate level resource because the author does go into some depth on key topics. I purchased a paperback copy to keep as a home reference. This is definitely worth reading and although I have some things in place, I did take additional actions based on the information in this book. The food planning information was definitely value added.
