Small chapbook of rubāʿiyāt (quatrains) in the style of, in conversation with, and in a few cases actual adaptations of, Omar Khayyam. The author is a Stanford professor who specialises in ancient Greek mathematics. In an endnote he gives some some background about Khayyam as mathematician vs. as a poet. His mathematics is all about completion (he considers Diophantine equations only up to the third degree, since that's all that that we can visualise; he thus viewed it as basically a completable project), and is put out clearly and under his own name. By contrast his poetry embraces ambiguity and the unsolvable questions of life, and was never published under his name, leading to ongoing controversy as to how many of the rubāʿiyāt he actually wrote. Summary of both Omar Khayyam and this book is: life is short, nothing we do will last, we are cosmically insignificant and should try to enjoy life, though Netz does question the common assumption that he was an atheist.
