The mad dragon king is not a myth
But the fate of a loyal son,
A selfless leader with honorable intentions

Stripped of his rights, family, and domain.
His land eating itself away
With vile pestilence, rotting crops,
Inevitable sacrifice of lives,
And a tested faith of the divine.

Against all odds, a bargain is struck with Aethys,
Mother of All, Carer of Quintessence,
In form of a forfeited birthright;
The tamer of his fiery fury, the remedy to his madness,
His one and only mate
Will never be born in his lifetime.

Traded for land anew free of disease,
With thriving vegetation, and ungrateful subjects,
The mad dragon king’s domain prospers,
As fast as his mind declines.

His curse in the open, the people dread
The day of his predetermined death
Only a few moons away.
Meanwhile, in the distant future,
Branwyn struggles to get a dog to shit outside.

ARC Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve finally finished and I have to tell you, this is a fantastic love story. Filled with such descriptive world building, character development, and so much angst, Smoke and Mirrors is one of my top reads of the year. Khaliv, the Mad Dragon King and Branwyn, his fated mate are so well written that you can’t help but get drawn into their world. The plot, the emotional twists and turns, and the struggles they endure had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I even had my phone screen read out loud for times when I could only listen instead of reading it myself. The cliffhanger (omg eyeroll) has me dying to read book 2 asap! I’m in love with these characters and need more!

Smoke and Mirrors is a dark fantasy romance with political intrigue, spice 🌶️ , blood 🩸, magic 🪄, shifters , and more so check your TW/CW’s before diving into this masterpiece.

Releases on Zon Nov 30th and will be FREE. Don’t miss it or you will regret it.

@kat you have amazed me with this story and I cannot wait to read and support you in this series and others 🫶🏽

I judged a book by its cover. And I loved it! I purchased this book for free, I believe, during the fantasy/romance ebook event last week, and I thought this cover was gorgeous. The mosaic is gorgeous, depicts a strong female lead, and it has dragons! Best believe, I judged this book by its cover!

I was slightly nervous to start it as my last read was also purchased during this ebook sale, and it was tragically awful. However, I was immediately presented with not one but two fantasy maps to start this book, along with a short dictionary of what specific words mean in the book, building the world before I even began to read it.

I loved that this story had so much romance whilst never forgetting to continue the plot and write an interesting narrative. This author can be a brilliant fantasy writer, although I still felt there were some tiny elements missing that would've made this just that bit better for me. For example, we jumped into the story so quickly that we had no time to learn about the main character or her nan. Obviously, we get to know the female lead as the book continued, however it was a struggle to get into it as quickly as we didn't know anything about her personality, background, her life etc. My main point in general was that there was a desperate need for charcater building, for everyone!

I thought the female lead was funny, and I thoroughly enjoyed their relationship and the world that was built. This much is obvious from me reading the book in only 3 days and immediately pre-ordering the second book, coming out late April this year.

I applied to this advanced copy as soon as I saw one word: goldpunk. I don’t do this very often but I had to! You see, I left the book space six years ago and when I did so, we didn’t even dream of bookstagram and historical romances were very in and speculative fiction kept going. When I returned, speculative fiction was pronounced dead. Who reads this stuff anymore? Punk? And as someone who was here when Jeff Vandermeer created in all its glory the Steampunk bible it was painful to see that most punk in itself was gone. Sure splatterpunk lives, but the rest of the punks are gone.

So when I saw Goldpunk, I didn’t even blink! I want to return to the space that made me the happiest before I left the book world. And then I saw it had a dragon and I was like: oh this is going to be goooood. And then it has smut. Ah, be still my heart! You’re not young anymore.

"Smoke & Mirrors" has everything I wanted it to be and more. Nothing could have prepared me for this book, it has my face all over it! It has fated mates, a stubborn FMC, a grumpy MMC who is a dragon (monster smut is sooo good), and lots of worldbuilding. It even has war and some political scenes. Lots of steamy scenes, a prophecy, plot twists! It’s like Kate knew exactly what to put in a recipe for great success and she did. It’s hot, it’s emotional, it’s a thrilling reading experience.

Branwyn is taken from her city and placed in a different world and time to save the king, Khaliv, from going mad since she is his mate and he needs to be with her to save himself from that prophecy.

The story is told through both POVs: Branwyn and Khaliv.
Branwyn is a strong FMC, while she has no powers nor special abilities, she accepts to remain at Khaliv's side to help him with the madness. She learns all about their world and even aids Khaliv in political issues. She endures some bullying from the people and while Khaliv protects her, she is more hurt by the fact that while he is the king who is trying to do right by his people, the people think so little of him. Branwyn might have had a rough past but with Khaliv she redeemed herself for all her bad decisions.

Khaliv, on the other hand, finds himself soothed by Branwyn’s presence but also conflicted by his feelings. The more he finds out about what he has done in the past that could lead to Branwyn getting hurt and making her step away from him, the more we see how his feelings for her have evolved. Khaliv is a tormented man, he has the role of being king but he has inherited the curse and a kingdom that is falling apart. His people are suffering with a war, some of his family suffered a brutal end and with all that weight above his shoulders, Branwyn seems to be a good presence for him. It is not her being his mate that soothes him, it’s how she is. She wishes to know Khaliv, to see who he really is, and what he loves. Khaliv is feared but not respected and with Branwyn that shift appears. The people start to see him not as the Mad King but as someone who is trying to do good.

“Smoke and Mirrors” is the first book in the Dreadwyng Chronicles and my first experience with K. Sparrow’s books, but I want more. The way the characters evolve throughout the plot it’s seamless. By the end of the book, we are not in Kansas anymore. We remember Branwyn and Khaliv from the beginning and wow have they matured and changed from all the challenges they had. Good stuff!

After being accepted into Kates Street team, I jumped at the chance to read this book! It was so unique and is basically like it's own genre, I have not read anything like it before. It is a beautiful love story immersed within the amazing world building. The character development and plot twists and OMG the ending...(WTF Kate!!!) had me flying through this book and impatiently waiting for the next book coming in April. If you love a book with angst, hilarious internal dialogue and relatable and loveable characters, read this book! Plus who doesn't love so Dragons 🐲🥵

I am absolutely OBSESSED with this book. I truly cannot wait for the sequel to this story to find out what happens next to our FMC and MMC. This book was twisty, smart, and unique. I absolutely love the crossover of modern tech and fantasy. The story was fresh while still performing in the tropes we love best in our romantasy books. The FMC is strong, quick-witted, and funny. The MMC is broody, blood just driven and weathered.
Something I particularly liked about this book was the distinct voices of the characters. I never found myself lost or confused about who's POV I was reading from chapter to chapter.
And the TWISTS. Oh my goodness. I was on the edge of my seat and had to pick my jaw up off the floor a couple of times.
The spice. Oh the spice. The spice was toe curling and articulated perfectly.
I am so excited that I was given the opportunity to read this ARC of this book and I cannot wait to devour future works by this author.

This is the second book I’ve read by Kate D. Pirate and the overarching theme of society sucks- do what makes you happy and not what you think is expected of you is great. I chuckled every time Winnie was like ‘oh this is basically just like a romance book I’ve read’ Like girl we all wish it would happen but I’d probably react the same way. But Khaliv is so sweet to Winnie from the beginning, the little things he does for her and the things he lets her do are so heartwarming. The spice is just perfect with the right mix of banter added in as well. The world building throughout the book is spectacular and important information adds to the story so well. And major plot twist makes me so excited for the second book!

ARC REVIEW
This book had passion, love, and allure. It was everything on one; she never intended to fall in love and she did. You never know who the enemy is , you literally never see them coming. This was something entirely different from the normal dragons and fantasy ; something new and fresh a different perspective.

I absolutely loved this book & I HIGHLY recommend it!! The thing I loved most about this book was the character developments and the descriptive, beautiful language. I’ll say it once and I will never stop saying it, I want a pet dragon and S&M made me want one even more.

“You bury me, Branwyn. You have burrowed yourself into my very being that I cannot see tomorrow without you.”

This fantasy, sci fi, dark romance is the first book in The Dreadwyng Chronicles, set in an alternate universe and filled with political intrigue, prophecies, magic, mythical creatures and romance. The story revolves around the mad dragon king, Khaliv, whose land was plagued. In a desperate bid to save his kingdom, he strikes a bargain with Aethys, the Mother of All, trading his one and only mate, who will now never be born in his lifetime, for a prosperous land.
Flash forward and Branwyn, a recovering alcoholic, is taken from her city to aid in preventing Khaliv, who’s subjects are now afraid and distrustful of him, from going truly mad and endangering all domains, as she is his fated mate.

This has such a masterful blend of magic and technology/advancement and primitive ways which I found really unique and features grumpy x sunshine, time travel, forbidden love and fated mates tropes but this was fated mates done on a whole new level. I went into this thinking aww nice romance and finished thinking Jesus Christ this is one of the most fun fantasies I’ve read in ages. The world building is epic and full of history and lore and completely immersive and the characters - oh my god - they are so complex and relatable, I loved the wit, kindness and resilience of our FMC as she fought to save a kingdom who didn’t always see she was doing her best to protect them and being so selfless and treasured her having a complex back story full of trauma and growth. I was not remotely ok since finishing this and being completely rocked by the twist and that ending. This is one of those fantasies that will stay with me and I am so pleased that I discovered this author and series.

Kate D. Sparrow is a talented writer who skillfully creates a captivating fantasy realm. The characters Brawyn and Khaliv are particularly well-developed, displaying depth and relatability despite the story's different time period. The concept of the Mad Dragon King is unique, and the magical landscape is filled with mystical yet dangerous creatures, making the world vibrant and intriguing. Set in an alternate dimension, this story presents a society that is both somewhat advanced and somewhat primitive, adding to its allure. However, it's important to note that the book includes mature themes such as sexual content, references to alcohol, and instances of blood and vomit, so reader discretion is advised.
The plot is genuinely engaging, and I am excited to see how Brawyn and Khaliv navigate their adventures in the Dreadwyng Chronicles. The supporting characters are also well-crafted. I particularly admire Brawyn's bravery as she consistently puts others first, even while trying to save a kingdom that may not appreciate her sacrifices. Khaliv emerges as a resilient king who, despite his past traumas, forms a strong connection with his mate, a recovering alcoholic. Their dynamic holds promise for an interesting partnership. Overall, the book strikes a commendable balance of excitement, emotional depth, and intriguing twists, making it a compelling read.
I am so thankful to receive the ARC copy/

I just finished this book and it was fantastic! The mad dragon king is so dry and literal it upped the comedic factor of the banter by one billion percent. I really truly loved this book. It’s so unique. It’s funny and spicy and the plot is awesome and unlike anything I have ever seen before, and I read A LOT of fantasy, especially with dragons. If you want a crazy unpredictable book that will make your heart race, your panties wet, and have you literally laughing out loud you should read this one!

“Who the f*ck would kidnap a f*cking seer?” I croaked disbelievingly.

“It was strange. I had never met a woman who could arouse me so easily with her aggression.”

“I do not want you to go about kicking people only to injure yourself. Now, you have me. You tell me if you need me to incapacitate someone for you.”

“You were staring at me oddly, and it made my c*ck hard.” he admitted bluntly, and I choked on a mouthful of bread.

“I don’t appreciate being called a piece of meat.” I snapped, then added coyly, “Honey.”

I just finished *Smoke and Mirrors*, and it’s easily see this being one of my top reads this year! The world-building, character development, and nonstop angst make this a must-read. Khaliv, the Mad Dragon King, and Branwyn, his fated mate, are so well-crafted that I was immediately pulled into their world. The emotional twists and struggles kept me on the edge of my seat, and I even had my phone read the book to me when I couldn’t physically read it myself. And that cliffhanger—ugh, I’m dying for book 2!

This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. It’s hilarious, spicy, and the plot is completely fresh, especially for a dragon fantasy. The Mad Dragon King’s dry humor and literal mindset made the banter so much fun. The world-building is rich with deep lore, and the time travel to another dimension adds layers of mystery and excitement.

The characters are much more than their usual tropes, with incredible depth that makes their slow-burn romance all the more captivating. The twists were unexpected, and that ending (seriously, Kate?!) had me flipping pages, already counting down the days until the next book. If you love angst, humor, lovable characters, and dragons, you’ve got to read this book!

This was a much longer read than I expected, but I was hooked by the premise right away. The story felt like it spanned two different worlds — although, if you know, you know — and the way it played with time and setting kept things interesting. The world-building was intense, and I did have to reread a few sections to fully grasp what was going on.

Khaliv and Branwyn’s slow-burn connection was really well done, and their interactions brought a lot of charm to the story. But there was one thing that didn’t quite work for me, and that was how the fated mate bond was handled. It surprised me that a dragon could bond with their mate and still be with others afterward if they wanted. I was always on guard that Khaliv might pull a fast one on Bran. Personally, I prefer when a fated mate is treated as a true, exclusive bond, so that detail did pull me out of the story a little. Still, even when the pacing slowed, the twists and depth kept me invested. I’m definitely curious to see where the story goes next. Especially after that ending!

Being destined for one isn’t always happily ever after.

This book is a wonderful start of the Dreadwyng Chronicles, filled with a lot mysteries and twists that keep you hooked till the end.

To start with, we’re greeted with deep world building with a lot of lore that enriches the world we’re in. We follow the main character in time traveling to the past in a separate dimension and there’s so much you can get to learn about this new dimension.

The plot is very interesting, in the sense that there were tropes that were played with but done differently in a way that makes it a fresh breath of air.

The characters were all written in a way that you would want to learn more about them. They’re more than just their perceived tropes. The main characters especially had their own depth which did a whole lot for their somewhat slow burn romance.

Rating: 5⭐️
Spice: 5🌶️
Darkness: 4🩶

Highlights:
🖤Dragon Shifters

Thoughts:
This was a wonderful fantasy novel full of spicy scenes, action, a variety of creatures and a few twists. You will love Khalid the dragon shifter- he was so lovable despite his impairment. I really liked Branwyn, she was such a compassionate person and was selfless even to her own detriment. This ended on a cliffhanger so I’m excited to read book 2.

I wish I could give this 0 stars. This is genuinely one of the worst books I've ever read in my entire life. For one, the entire premise was basically the fmc has to 'fix' the mmc. That should never be anyone's job. Second they kept describing how the fmc was so petite and tiny but also absolutely perfect in every way. The world building and attempt at an actual plot sucked and did not work at all. I had to force my way to the end because it was boring, stupid and the writing was bad. Like it was obvious this book did not have an editor, was a first draft and self published because not decent publisher would ever publish this book, if you could call it that. Would never recommend.

ARC read is in ✨️ You came for dragon lore and magic, you stayed for haphazardly mates and some light kdnapping.

We had a dirty little time with a sprinkling of social commentary and a spoonful of comedy. Every page had me rolling my eyes at the mouthy acuity of our FMC (who really seemed to need nothing more than a day off from the nonsense), and the sheer determination of our MMC to have max capac denial of the real situation he's found himself in.

To be perfectly honest I do appreciate a mad king so call me toxic. I recommend knowing what you're reading when you tip toe into this one fam.

This was so great, the whole Mad Dragon King idea is really interesting and I really love Khaliv a lot. He was like so romantic and devoted to Branwyn and she helped change him so much for the better. I really liked that Khaliv took the time to try to understand Branwyn and her feelings about things. The spice in this was hotter than Khaliv’s dragon fire. All the side characters were well done and memorable. There’s some really good twists in this that had me shocked. I can’t wait to read No Rest for the Wicked!

I loved this book! I absolutely devoured this book in a mere number of hours. that’s how good it was.

I loved the interactive world Kate made for us in this book, from maps to a guide of the language, and the world building, its perfection.

on top of that, the romantasy vibes are so big in this one! from lovers to friends to ….(no spoilers), the romance was top tier. I loved the gradual progression of romance and feelings.

I am so excited for the second book! I need it NOW!

Do not let this cutesy, colourful cover fool you!! This book is FILTHY. A blend of unique world building, dragon smut, blood, political intrigue and alternate dimensions. And don’t forget the adorably deadly wyverns!! I have such a soft spot for them since Abraxos (iykyk) So many exciting elements I’m excited to see where the series takes me. It’s definitely one of a kind. And not to mention the TWISTS!!!! HOLY F. Recommend!!

The world building for this book is so well done, it feels like you are right inside the book with the characters.
I loved Branwyn, and her efforts with her mate the mad dragon king.
And the ending has left me excited for book 2, because we are left on a massive cliff hanger.
This book is a dark fantasy romance, that has spice, magic, shifters, blood and more (check the trigger warnings before reading)

Loved the quick world building and plot setup. I was a fan of both the MMC and FMC. I loved how dedicated to pleasure the MMC was. I found myself devouring all aspects of this book. It was a good mix spice with scifi-romance. The conflict undertones were done well and the reveal was unexpected. Also the violence was lovely and satisfying. Can't wait to see how the story continues to unfold in the next book.

I couldn’t finish Smoke and Mirrors (Dreadwyng Chronicles #1)—I stopped halfway through. While the premise had a lot of potential, the execution fell flat for me. The story moved too fast, and the characters’ actions often lacked clear motivation or explanation. I found it hard to connect with them, especially the FMC, who seemed to just go along with everything without question. There were too many gaps in the beginning, and it made it hard to stay engaged.

This was such a trip! I didn’t really know what to expect, I only knew it contained dragons and goldpunk and otherwise went in blindly. The MFC is so relatable and funny, I really enjoyed being in her head. I’ve got a weakness for tortured grey area MMCs and this one definitely delivered. It ends with a cliffhanger and I’ll definitely continue this series♥️

Omfg!! Talk about heart throbbing, emotional rollercoaster, and has several of my favorite tropes! Fated mates, grumpy mmc, stubborn fmc, and shifters! It can't get any better! What an intriguing and plot driven story. The dual POV is great to gain perspective from both characters as they stumble through their growth and experiences. The grump stubbornness in them both was delightful and hilarious at times. This book has plot, world building, spice, and fantasy elements that blend really effectively throughout the story. Looking forward to the next in series!

I wanted to like it, but the story moved quickly without knowing why the characters were making their decisions. The FMC gets whisked away to another time and doesn't question why. Without any explanation, she does exactly what the MMC needs. I feel like there were too many holes in the start.
