This is truly an excellent book on Christian leadership. There were brand new insights for me to consider, wise words to heed, needed reminders and helpful examples of the principles lived out. Due to it being structured to briefly and succinctly address a wide variety of leadership topics, I expect that this will be a book like J Oswald Sanders’ Spiritual Leadership that I will refer back to often.
A very sensible approach to good leadership with practical examples and applications. A book for every Christian leader and I love his analogy between the sailboat and the power boat. Written out of personal experience so not just theory but tried and tested practice.
A good leadership book, with great Belhaven examples. Although there wasn't anything that was shockingly new, the balance and consistency of Dr. Parrot's insight is what was really refreshing. It doesn't hurt that I have seen first-hand the way that Belhaven has prospered under his leadership. His is a leadership that is not about leadership technique but about service and commitment to Christ, which is what shows at Belhaven. I especially appreciated his comments on the importance of transparency--how people in the organization need to speak up with sincere integrity and know that the leader will listen. I guess maybe now I should tell him what some students are suggesting about the chapel services he leads.
I enjoyed this read. It wasn't too heady or theoretical. Dr. Parrott stayed within a practical realm while always giving an appropriate example from close to his experiences. It was an easy read because he doesn't overcomplicate things for the sake of sounding smart, although if he really does lead the way that he writes he has been blessed with a head of wisdom.
I don't pick up leadership books too often because I was ruined by a John Maxwell book years ago. So I picked this book up with little expectation and found myself greatly surprised at how good it was, chocked full with solid insights that always lead one back to the cross for humility and wisdom.
This is a book on "Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders". The book is "chock-full of wisdom, experience and godly counsel." "Transformational leadership necessitates an intensive and sustained investment in the lives of people and institutions God entrusts to our care." Not ready to write my own review yet, but I find myself agreeing with everything I have read so far, based upon my experiences working with both good and bad leaders.
The basic premise of this book is solid ... leaders ought to make decisions based on the long-term best-interests of the organization they lead. How the specifics of this book fit with that basic premise is not always clear. The book reads like a rushed collection of leadership tips and principles that can be found in most leadership books. Not my favorite read in the "leadership" category.
