Once known for slum-like conditions in its immigrant and working-class neighborhoods, New York City's downtown now features luxury housing, chic boutiques and hotels, and, most notably, a vibrant nightlife culture. Using the social world of bars as windows into understanding urban development, Richard Ocejo argues that the gentrifying neighborhoods of postindustrial cities are increasingly influenced by upscale commercial projects, causing significant conflicts for the people involved.

He considers why residents continue unsuccessfully to protest the arrival of new bars, how new bar owners produce a nightlife culture that attracts visitors rather than locals, and how government actors, including elected officials and the police, regulate and encourage nightlife culture. A pretty thorough study of gentrification in the Lower East Side (Manhattan, NYC -- as if NYC geography requires any appendices at this point. You’d think I’m jesting but I’m not. If I as an immigrant twice-removed can more or less map out NYC, so should you), through the perspective of nightlife in the Bowery and Alphabet City. In this — as with many other studies of gentrification, one might shiftily add — you’d find commonplace narrative of displacement, nostalgia/longing, episodes of contestation, and above all that gentrification fascinates us so because it is a story of sociocultural tumult. People do not get “displaced” as water does. The more vagabond among us might go as the tumbleweed does, blown here and there by the winds of capitalism, but those are the few. The rest of us, the many, are ivy — interconnected fronds whose roots reach deep into the tenements, wedded to the edifice of place, steadfast to a commitment to never let go.
