Ik vond dit echt een leuk inkijkje in m’n favoriete band! Je leest over de achtergrond van sommige nummers, maar vooral ook over hoe ze begonnen zijn en hoe elk album (en de vibe van dat album) tot stand is gekomen

This book is really short and reads more like a fandom blog post of their history and specifically of Matty Healy. It had too many personal interjections and felt kind of cheesy. Yes, it went over the history of the band but it was honestly very brief (I get it, the title says brief, a note to one of their album titles too) and didn’t dissect enough for me. The other members of the band were only really mentioned in the beginning, it only went over Matty. Would’ve been interesting to hear more about their aesthetics, music and writing processes, specifics about more performances etc. The Taylor Swift part too was a little much as well. I think that whole period of time was very interesting but the way this part was written seemed too focused on her. There have been so many other performances and statements the band has done/made that could have been mentioned too.

They have so many interesting eras and are truly one of the most artistic bands out there where everything they do is intentional and nuanced so there is soooo so much to cover. This was interesting but fell a little flat for me and like I said, read more like a fan book than a real take on or true history of the band. I cannot wait for the day a deeper detailing of their history comes out and a total analysis of their tours, specifically At Their Very Best and Still…At Their Very Best.

What is a really well-researched, albeit brief (only focusing on Healy) recapitulation of the band’s existence is interrupted often by the authors assertive and repetitive opinions that kind of take the reader out of the enjoyment of the bands past and present. I also wish I were around to edit it, as there are minor errors throughout that I kept getting distracted by. In the end, read it if you love the band. Ramsey is well researched, just sometimes a bit too involved.

An overall good timeline of their career and had lots of interview snippets which I appreciated. I also liked how it detailed fan responses to projects and internet reactions.
Definitely focused a lot more on Matty than any of the other members, and I would have liked to know more about them. Also it did have a bit too much personal anecdotes and opinions that didn’t contribute much to the information
Definitely still worth reading though if you’re a fan of the 1975
