So, I'm wary of video game manga specifically after Kirby Manga Mania being... absolutely the opposite of what I thought Kirby was supposed to be about. But two specific things on the cover and one I somehow didn't notice until just now made me curious enough to give a read.
One of those things, elaborated:
This is sort of the humour of this book, initially a series of shorts (one- to four-page joke stories, mostly self-contained and all assuming you already know the lore behind Mega Man) but gradually getting a more solid running plot—kind of like how Handyman Saitou starts out (but without any established lore for Saitou you should already know about). It's... a LOT more silly than I thought it would be, particularly when it's established almost immediately that
1. Rock/Mega Man is perhaps TOO compassionate and trusting, which is why he lets Dr. Wily get away each time and why Dr. Light rebuilds all the robots. Because take that away, and what does Rock or Mega Man even mean?
2. Dr. Light is kind of a head case: - he insists that Rock's/Mega Man's moral integrity is more important than security (arguably the U.N.'s job, as he informs the official who keeps calling them), so letting Wily go every time is completely understandable to him - he gets on this "organic" kick trying to make things like "Organic Rush" (the dog on the cover, which is a normal dog but with Rush costume parts and normal dog abilities) - he doesn't remember ANYTHING about the "Men's Six" men as far as how he offended them - when pressed on the offences, he acts completely nonchalant, as though this really isn't a thing he should be concerned about (and normally, it shouldn't be, since it's all up to the Men's Six to get over these perceived slights)
Is this worth reading? Depends on how funny you think Bad Box Art Mega Man is and whether jokes like "Organic" Rush/Rush 3.0 (the cat)/Beat (pigeons) are enough to carry you through the whole book. If you don't have a sense of humour, perhaps give this a pass. I think it was fun for a read, but I doubt I'll read it again beyond showing my spouse the highlights once I have a chance.
Little Mega Man Volume 1 is definitely a wild ride! The art is undeniably cute, with vibrant, almost chibi-like character designs that add a whimsical charm to the whole story. The zany and humorous moments really shine, providing plenty of fun for those who enjoy light-hearted, quirky manga. There's a lot of personality in the artwork, making the characters feel endearing even when the plot gets a little lost in the shuffle.
But the plot....well the plot is.....a plot? LOL It feels scattered, with little sense of direction at times. You’d think the plot would take a moment to breathe, but it’s all go-go-go without much explanation.
Overall, it's a fun and chaotic read if you’re not expecting a deep, coherent storyline. It's the kind of manga you can just enjoy for the humor and cute art without worrying too much about plot holes or disjointed pacing. A solid 3 out of 5. Weird and fun is the best way to describe this one.
Little Mega Man is just a collection of short comics that roughly come together to create a cohesive story. I loved it! I only know a little bit about Mega Man, but I still enjoyed this collection. I personally think I would get more enjoyment out of this book had I known more about Mega Man, but this was a fun read regardless. I do have to say I did not read all of it, however due to the nature of the comics, I don't think it's necessary to read this in full to enjoy it. If you know anybody who played any of the numerous Mega Man games growing up, then this book will be perfect for them.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley, Udon Entertainment, Yuushi Kawata and Yukito for this ARC.
This is Volume 1 in the series and best for fans of the game.
This was an okay read and it had some funny moments. There was a lot of dialogue throughout which made it seem like it was a long manga. It will be interesting to see how the Mr Mega Man manga ties in with this.
If you like Megaman, this story is a must-read! It follows Megaman during his everyday life, showing him out of his fighting outfit and making him feel more human than robot. Of course, you still get to see him in his classic outfit while battling the bad guys. This is great for longtime fans and newcomers alike. The art is fantastic and really brings the world to life.
Like a Mega Man themed fever dream. It's deeply weird, self aware, sometimes a little on the nose, every so often creepy...and did I mention DEEPLY WEIRD?
Fun concept. Not sure if it's the humor that doesn't translate well or if the ones that fall flat with me are universally flat. This is still a good book for Mega Man fans, especially since we don't often get additional media like this.
They really should have used all of the Japanese names.
A difficult one to rate, as some of the gags really spoke to me, while there were others that I found quite off-putting. If we can not have Mega Man being inquisitive about breasts, that would be great.
ARC COpy...Other totally different mood and pacing then the other Megaman manga I was reviewing and also released around the same time as this one, this one is whackier and more in "in tune" with the zaniness of the vide0games ( nostalgia hooking + homages included in narrative).
I was expecting a high octane, adrenaline pumping action adventure with this one but unfortunately it's not. The dialogues are not good and their actions of the characters are a bit weird. I when you getting into the vibe, it suddenly turns somewhere else.
Just a good gag shonen gag manga, fun observational jokes about mega man and also about tech and japanese life. Well worth a read if you're a fan of the series
