Escaped Daughter

Rate this book
My name is Bevin Shaw and I’m desperate to escape my family. I don’t want to be a Shaw anymore—I never did. Not when that “family” sacrifices its youngest to make the eldest more powerful to stay at the top of the magical world.
I hid my magic when I was young and for years under their roof, but if they ever learned how powerful I am, they would find a way to drag me back and take it… Not caring for a second it would mean my death. That’s how toxic and evil my family is.
Feel better about how bad yours is?
Glad I could help.
Now that I’m of age and the law requires me to attend college instead of being homeschooled, this is the chance I have suffered for.
But nothing is ever that easy, right? People that horrible are never going to play fair and let me go when they see me as an asset they own.
I have to put my faith in people I’ve never met and pray to the gods that nothing else distracts me from achieving freedom. After that… There’s no reason I can’t enjoy the view on campus, right?

Morrigan University is a spicy reverse harem, university-age paranormal academy series with darker elements, strong language, violence, and a heroine who always does her best no matter what’s thrown at her… While trying to figure out what and who her heart wants.

*This book is part of a series and cannot be read as a standalone. Like all my books, this is not light and fluffy and includes dark themes and events some may find triggering. Reader discretion is advised.

DNF 50% not for me

I just couldn't get into this story. Bevin is meant to be 18 years old and very sheltered but what I actually read was a woman at the very least in her late 20s. The author bled through into this book.

She supposedly never left the family estate and only interacted with animals and staff who did her parents bidding. Yet she knows how to flirt with men and dress provocatively. She's also a feminist with very firm thoughts and views about the way men behave. At 18. On her first ever date she had a checklist for the poor boy.... It just doesn't add up, social media can only teach you so much. You have to have lived it to be able to make so many assumptions about people.

The main issues I had with Bevine however is her characterisation. She's gorgeous and she knows it and everyone knows it.. Fine. She's rich and from a rich background again everyone knows it.. Fine. She's powerful and she's throwing her magical weight around.. Fine. She's written as very smart and capable again.. Fine.

Problem is there is nothing there to root for. I was not moved by anything happening to her, there is a disconnect. I didn't find myself at the edge of my seat thinking "ohh what's going to happen". Even her panic attack was written as though she was above that too. Her behaviour with the professor left a sour taste in my mouth, it just didn't sit well.

It's great that she's this amazing girl... Sorry my bad.. Woman. But at 50% I was bored.

Flynn is one of those authors that has hideous covers, but usually has decent content. That said, since I've enjoyed other books by this author, it's difficult to imagine they actually wrote something this bad. Honestly this is one of the cringiest books I've read this year while simultaneously being egregiously unimaginative. Seriously... did AI write this?

It reads like someone's therapy homework - all the things someone who feels powerless wishes they had said, done, or thought in the moment, except it's accomplished in the most pontificating, contrived, juvenile way possible. Was any of the dialog ever actually said out loud?

Additionally, the syntax is like nails on a chalkboard. Have you ever heard someone list adjectives in the wrong order? Look at the brown, big bear! *insert full body blanch* Like listening to an out of tune piano, the sensation is... unpleasant. I'm not saying that's specifically what the author did, but that's exactly what the writing feels like, and it's enough to chronically yank me from any kind of immersion in the storyline.

Here are some examples:

"It worked out well for business that she still craved eating it up with her eyes as she was creative in her mind and coming up with possibilities."

“I’d rather die like that than let you sell me to whoever you want to benefit you believing you own me.”

"You knew that or you wouldn’t have reacted as you did as busted."

"There were also options to special order food and make requests for extra fees for events or birthdays which was really nice."

"It was disconcerting to say the least after years of practically being ignored or treated as a disgraceful nuisance, but they hovered and had their minions stalk me to suddenly care about their investment to reap the benefit of."

“I need to think. I’ve got a lot more on my mind than just you and the change of what I thought all happened.”

And let's not forget the fact that Bevin is disgustingly misogynistic for someone so "enlightened."
"Overall, I was dressed to kill and looking like I knew it but it didn’t take much effort whereas other women couldn’t hit this level if they spent weeks trying.
Ah, yes, raising yourself up by bringing other women down. How... feminist.

woman glaring while rolling up the car window

Finally, Bevin is a boring, one-dimensional character whose plentiful positive attributes we're veritably attacked with. She's an uber rich, intelligent, confident, gorgeous, independent, oNe oF a KiNd business savant with perfect tits - Did I mention her breasts are amazing? I should know, because we're told REPEATEDLY. Wanted by every man, hated by every girl woman, and envied by people in power; look at this brave, powerful witch of exemplary character as she inspires awe.

If I roll my eyes any harder, I'll sprain my optic nerve.

This book has an interesting premise, but fails in execution due to poor plot devices and bad writing.

Bevin is the youngest of a very powerful family who pretends she doesn't exist. All their riches and prestige, Bevin gets none of it. From a young age, Bevin learned that her family gains power by sacrificing their youngest child. Knowing this, Bevin hid her magic. This caused her family to view her as a disgrace, and completely ostracize her from the family. Bevin is fine with this, until she reaches the age of 18. Her family is trying to arrange a marriage for her, which Bevin actually is okay with. All she asks is that she gets a pick from five suitors of her family's choice. Her father agrees, but as Bevin leaves for college, he orchestrates a scheme to eliminate Bevin's choice. This is where the story really begins.

Personally, I found this interesting. I did clock the bad writing from the first page, but I am no writer myself so I thought I could just ignore it. I couldn't. I got to about 80% and then just flipped through the rest.

First of all, this is a RH. Usually, about halfway through I know who is in the RH (even if they don't know it yet). I have no clue who is in the RH, or how many people are in it either. I think by the end of the book there was 3 confirmed guys? Potentially a fourth? IDK. It's hard to tell because every guy just thought she was sooooo hot. The author literally spent pagessss telling us how conventionally attractive she was and how she was every guys wet dream. Like... okay? Who is this for?

Anyways, for the actual plot I feel like it kinda got lost. She can talk to animals and stuff, but she keeps it a secret? Also maybe I totally skipped over this part but what are other peoples powers? No clue.

Really the whole book is spent with her being derpy and naive and the guys fall head over heels for her because she has big tits. Literally there is a scene where she like flashes some guy in the library to... cheer him up? A complete stranger to her by the way. Yes this was the same library she was assaulted in. No I don't remember his name.

Do I recommend this book? No. It reads like a rough draft. Desperately needed an editor. Listen, I read RH primarily I never go into these books expecting Sylvia Plath or some shit. But it gets to a point where I wish authors had SOME standards to what they were putting out.

Honestly, one of the worst books I’ve ever read and that is saying something being that I’ve read over thousands of books.

The individual that wrote this book was so beyond ridiculous, delusional, and annoying beyond words.

Sexist, sexism, sexist, sexism, sexist, sexism, sexist, sexism……
Those two words were used within this book at least 100 times and I’m not even kidding. If you did a drinking game taking a shot every time she said the word sexist you would be 6 feet under. This delusional moron has no concept of what actual sexism is she basically just says anything that a man says or does or that society is is sexist. Regardless of it being so or not.
I didn’t look it up because I can’t be bothered, but I’m assuming this writer is one of those really young women that nowadays is just so beyond ridiculous and delusional and in a constant state of I am woman hear me roar we are queens and everybody else is just a fucking piece of shit. Everything about this book was just horrible. The writing was so immature and patchy and weird and the dialogue was just so cringe. Basically the entire book was cringe. Every single male in this book was basically made out to be a sexist and a loser. And every woman was of course amazing and a queen and should be on a throne and all men should kneel at it and bow down to her.
As a woman myself, I rolled my eyes so many times I have headache.

And don’t even get me started on how the FMC was written. She kept talking about how beautiful she was and how hot she was and how big and hot her tits were. And men should be grateful that she’s showing her tits to them and that they’re allowed to even look at her because she’s so beautiful. And again I am not making any of this up. It is literally Word for Word in this book. This girl is so full of herself it is unreal.

One of the most unlikable characters that I’ve ever read and again that’s saying a lot being that I’ve read thousands of books.

I honestly lost brain cells reading this book. No one with a brain and with any taste for anything that is good in this life could give this book more than two stars. Nobody!

This book is so bad I wouldn’t even use the pages for toilet paper in an apocalypse when I need toilet paper. That’s how bad it was.

Disclaimer: I’m going to review it without spoilers at the top, then create a line and anything below that line will be spoilers. Do with that what you will.

The plot of this book has so much potential, but also this book is such a hot mess. There’s no other way to describe it. Half the stuff is just a chaotic mess at the best of times. Like I said there’s so much potential that I’ll have to continue reading the series, plus some of this writing is wattpad levels of bad that it’s enjoyable??! But also, oof.

What I liked:
- The main plot (mentioned in the summary) is fantastic. Youngest being siphoned off to make the male heir more powerful, trying to get disowned, the law about going to college, which is why she’s there. It’s a unique idea in all the typical college academy fantasy novels that there are.
- Without spoilers, the FMC’s power is an uncommon one and I love that.
- Love the name Bevin.
- The FMC knows she’s hot, has a relative level of confidence, is bothered by needing help, and is honestly a savage when speaking most of the time. And I love it!
- There is a level of comedy which was entertaining to experience.

What I didn’t care for:
- The writing has a lot of errors and/or super confusing sentence structures. Like A LOT. To the point where it was extremely distracting and sometimes didn’t even process what was going on because I was trying to decipher the sentence. An editor is needed MAJORLY.
- The world she’s trying to build doesn’t really make the most sense. It’s sexist beyond belief, yet the main government believes her and does everything in their power when something compromising happens…so your world isn’t sexist? Like there’s pigs but I’m sorry if your world is truly sexist then you wouldn’t have been believed. Or she lacks social skills because she was sheltered/locked away and is a virgin, but she’s also a complete sexual deviant and throws the puss around constantly with the confidence of someone who knows how to flirt, interact with people, etc. Without spoilers, I’d have just liked to see more confusion, struggle, misinterpreting things, etc. It made for a confusing world and situations that didn’t build up the scenes but made them too “easy”.
- The name choices for some of the characters are a choice…and not in the good way.
- The insta love/lust of it all. I love that she knows she attractive, but she’s crazily trusting almost automatically with a bunch of overly hot men. And they’re vocalizing their desires to date her and stuff. It’s just a little too heavy right out of the gate. And for all of the men. Not just one of two. We’d like a timid guy or something.
- Bevin is unique but the men really are not. Why setup some uniqueness to the physical traits and then just not lean into it? And it’s like okay, she’s unique. But then no one even acknowledges her uniqueness.
- Bevin overshares A LOT. Which is fine because it could be explained away with the lack of socialization. But it comes off in such a woe-is-me, pick-me-girl sort of way that makes me wanna bash my brains in. Plus girl you can’t just be giving away everything to complete strangers when you should be having trust issues because of your family???

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT
————————————————————

What I liked:
- Bevin having purple eyes. Okay, cool!
- Again, the plot concept was great. They’re hidden without humans knowing, the concept of the siphoning, her scheming to get away, how her grandpa helped, her absolutely unique powers of being able to talk to animals…it all has so much potential!
- Her talking to animals is such an uncommon power, but in a good way. It’s giving fantasy + Eliza Thornberry in the best way possible.
- The animals’ names are legit hilarious. A frog named Clarence? And a gossipy owl named Julie? They’re such regular names and it was comedic to experience. Plus I love how they explained how she hid her powers from her family because of the poison within Clarence. That was a very unique approach to explaining how she hid in plain sight.
- Familiars!!! Doesn’t matter why they have them, I love a familiar and am jealous I don’t have one 😭 add in the fact that Bevin is a badass and can get them on her side easily and does some show stopping things? Win.
- First guy she encounters ending up in a bad scene where Gregg tries to rape her? Absolutely fucked up but in a good way. It developed the plot and should have made her distrust men even more. I knew it was likely coming but they did set him up to be quickly likable.
- Purity. At first I cringed at this word until I realized it was true for both the guys and girls. Such an interesting detail to add to the book. Giving away your virginity being more than that but instead being this passing of power too. I oddly enjoyed it.
- Bevin bitchslapping Professor Wyatt 👏🏼 never gonna dislike a scene where she doesn’t fuck around. And they set it up not as “oh she’s a little weak thing and he didn’t feel it” but instead has his head snapping to the side and the sheer shock he has from her doing it.
- I think the concept of god warlocks and goddess witches is interesting. Again, there’s plot potential and a unique concept. It felt a little dropped in your lap and Derek being gaslighty a bit, but still what a cool concept.

Favorite quotes:
- Anything to get out of this house early. I might not have had the magic they wanted to use me as a sacrifice, but I knew I was gorgeous by society standards and my parents preyed upon that. // Okay Queen, knowing she’s a hot bitch 👏🏼
- “I add a bit of sugar, but I’ll try your way.” I took off the lid and handed it over. I rolled my eyes when he smiled. “If you make a crack about ‘sugar and spice and everything nice’ I’m walking away and mocking you the rest of the night.” He froze in taking the drink from me but then recovered. “Too easy, right?” “And lame.” “Ouch.” // Absolutely savage and I loved it 😂
- “Now why would I worry about choosing one familiar when I can do that?” I gave her a moment to settle with that before continuing. “Should I go ask the administration how a witch was let in here when a freshman is able to call away her little crow familiar and poke holes in their bond? Or do you now get you don’t know as much as you think, and you should shut your fucking mouth instead of running it and try to learn something?” “Well, dayumn,” someone hissed, several people echoing him as others whistled. // What an iconic moment. She absolutely eviscerated the girl.
- they were playing up how naïve I am and that was a selling point. I am, and I don’t know what to do a lot.” “Not to downplay what you’ve been through, but a lot of us feel that way. It’s normal.” // I love this because as much as I’m bothered by her woe-is-me thing, I appreciate how multiple of the guys are like yeah, we’re all just wandering and not knowing what to do and having similar feelings.

What I didn’t care for:
- The logic of this girl is missing. Like I love a woman who knows her body and what she wants. But she almost gets raped and then she’s like yo just take my virginity stranger and I’ve never done anything but I’m gonna just strip and be confident? Then she goes on a date (cute) and gives the guy the option of kissing her goodnight or seeing her tits? Like it’s just such a wildly insane interaction. Even if some of it was enjoyable. Or the “super buff and extremely hot, but poor” tutor is getting bullied (girls talking shit) and she’s like “awww I wanna cheer him up” and her thought is allowing him to look up her skirt while climbing a library ladder and bending down to grab a pen? It’s just like WTF. Where is her head at? Again, it adds a bit of comedy, can be someone hot, but also it just is weird too.
- The sex scenes feel a little rushed and exaggerated. Like they rush over her orgasming and then it’s like…is she having 32 orgasms? It’s insane.
- She’s got a uniquely amethyst eye color and then her dudes are all boring? Yet no one is reacting to her eye color that much? Like they’ve got green, blue, and brown eyes. And other than the brown eyes being described as caramel, it’s all just so…regular. Why build a world where she has a unique eye color and not give the guys other unique traits too?
- The author loves to mention her “big tits” and then they’re described as a large C or low D. Does this author even know what big tits are? Are the big tits in the room with us????
- Already fucking at 11% turned me off. I felt the author did handle the transition of that happening and adding it to a plot development that she fucked her professor without knowing. But everything else involved in that scene was off. Her logic of “yep, gonna fuck this guy after just getting almost raped by another guy” didn’t make sense, Professor Wyatt’s desire to make her feel sore and weirdly seeming like he’s kind of getting off on the fact that she’s drugged, the author trying to make it seem like there’s some connection vs just fucking, etc. It just made for an extremely creepy scene.
- Derek Wyatt is lowkey an awful character. Like he’s gaslighty with the things he says and does and the reactions Bevin has and his level of obsession is kind of off putting. I love a man who worships his woman but calling her “goddess” all the time and not explaining or saying some dialogue in a non-sexual manner to explain what she is just felt off. They’re making for an extremely unlikable character, yet I know he’s one of her love interests too and I don’t care for it.
- Again, the name choices. You’ve got Sergey (hot), Kelton (odd but unique), Winter Green (winter is a cool name and the comedy with his last name)…and then you’ve got Derek (just bland) and Nigel (we can’t be serious…no one named Nigel is hot). There’s no continuity between the naming choices in this book.
- Bevin makes an enemy out of a girl in her classes…but you literally never learn the girl’s name in the entire book? There could be more development of her being the Regina George of the freshman or something, Bevin learning more about the other freshmen, etc. but it never happens. Like can we develop some side characters and elongate the plot some?

3.5 too sex heavy

I did not expect this book to be so consumed by sex. The synopsis gives no indication this is going to be a sex heavy book. Like he’s it says there’ll be scenes but 13% in she meets someone she doesn’t know the name of and bangs him bc of an incident that occurred. The world building is not well fleshed out at all. Literally she continues to meet guys and have sex or sexual relations with them. We barely get into her gaining independence, her inner thoughts aren’t well explained and she keeps secrets from the reader. She has this job that was set up with her grandfather but doesn’t tell us exactly what it is until slightly later. The ending isn’t even an ending and I don’t understand all her motivations for her reactions so I wish it was fleshed out more. I got bored with the endless sex scenes. I found it weird that she’s so sheltered and deemed shy by the other characters but then she sees the tutor getting bullied and goes off, rolls up her skirt and climbs a library ladder to give him a show. Then when she comes back down he comes up against her and asks if she wants to bang in the stacks and suddenly she’s shy. It’s weird. Completely weird to me. I want to learn more about the magic and powers but it’s really secondary. She can talk to animals and wanted to research that more but no research is done on page. We get no information. Then the end is not even a big bad with her dad or family it’s just the guy she banged in the beginning telling her she’s some sort of powerful witch who is blessed by the goddess but the only sign is when she is gaining pleasure. I’m wondering if this ties in but I’m just so confused. I may read book 2 to see if more information comes to light or if this is another sex heavy book because I don’t need all that. The synopsis was so intriguing and this isn’t what I signed up for imo.

This series has a lot of similarities to Artemis especially the men. The thing that is way better with this series versus Artemis is the minimal amount of attention spent on anyone eating. Cause that shit got old with the Artemis series. I swear if the author removed even half of the writing about anyone eating in the Artemis series there would be less than half of what it is.

Come onnn.... have some creativity!! The professor, the tutor, the cute nice guy, the OP fmc, the word sexism used eleventy billion times, her shutting people down by screaming at them and then everyone basically clapping her mic drop.... this is just the exact story at AU with the evil family flair.

Engaging but similar to her other books

The story is engaging and if this is your first book by this author you should definitely keep reading.
I, however, read some of her other series and i found them all to read the same. Factually I know there are differences between Bevin's story and say Tamsin's (AU), but the writing is exactly the same ("it made sense in my head", "people are stupid"), the elements repeat (fairness, corruption, etc), there's a lot of moaning about how sexist society is, and the only 'good' men are those who put the emotional needs of the FMC first, second an third, even at the cost of their own identity ("before you, I never liked/did/was X, y, z"). Having followed the author on Facebook, i know she writes her personal things the same way. So it just feels like i get to know the author, not actually immerse in a new world with a new FMC. So yeah, I won't continue with this series.

How many times can someone “throw their head back and laugh” in a single book?
That along with the amount of times “hawt” and “dayum” were in this book was enough to drive me crazy.
Bevin is the most pick me girl there ever was.
She’s sheltered but she’s a 20 out of 10.
She never left her house but knows how to flirt and get what she wants.
She wants to make friends but is a huge bitch to anyone who says something she doesn’t like.
Shes naive but she runs a secret business and has since she was a child???
One of the worst books I’ve ever read.

DNF at around 60%. How much TikTok does this author watch? I suggest she tone it down and maybe it will improve her writing.

I liked the basic storyline. And, I actually liked SOME of the characteristics of the FMC. But it was like the author tried to force fit modern TikTok themes into the supernatural story and it made character thoughts, dialogue, and action seem so weird and out of place at times. Also, is the FMC naive and sheltered are smart and savvy? Does she, or does she not, want men to be sexually attracted to her? Is she self aware or not? Is the society really sexist… or just her family? The author has so many conflicting moments of dialogue and behavior that it just gets annoying.

I like a good character arch; or someone staying in their lane and experience new things…. But this was too all over the place and I just stopped caring.

So I'll start by saying that the main plot outline is interesting. The big problem is that the writing is just so bad. The FMC kept going on and on about how attractive she is and how great her boobs are. Throughout this entire book, we hear about it every few pages, which was bizarre and makes me wonder where the editor was for that. This is also one of those book that the guy just love her for "reasons" and all come up with some stupid nickname to call her within 2 minutes of meeting her. The author also tries to write the FMC as super smart and super stupid all at the same time in some effort to make her naive, but it really doesn't work; it's just annoyingly dumb. Her evil family and all the drama that goes along with that are what carry the story, enough so I'm reading the next book just to see where that goes, even though the writing is beyond cringy.

DNF at 15%. Now I’m all for dark romance themes and I really don’t have any triggers but you’re telling me this guy takes her virginity while she is drugged and he is aware she’s drugged???? And he’s fine with this cause he just can’t help himself cause she’s so hot????

Do not waste your valuable reading time on this book!!!!!!!!!

What the hell was this book. It start off good at least the first 3 or 4 chapters. I liked that she seemed like a baddie even though she had trauma and all this family baggage and abuse. But then it was like every guy she spoke to for more than 30 seconds she was intimate with without being any type of rapport or any connection.

Her opinions of how men acted I get came from her horrible family but what the hell was all the weird interactions with Wyatt. It was like she’d sleep with, then felt betrayed but what he said, then slept with him, then felt betrayed again all in the span of like 4 chapters.

And winter? I get he helped her but soon as he made contact with her to pull her out of harms way it was straight to being sexual. I mean it was no build up to trust or anything.

Ohhh and don’t get me started on how much the author focused on describing in cringy language that Bevin has awesome “tits” like what? Why was that such a focal point? At the start Bevin said I know I’m attractive but there was more to her that she wanted people to see and yet every single chapter focused on her body and how hot she was and it was fkkn weird.

I couldn't do it, I DNF'd at 49% this hurt me to read. It was painful. it read like a terrible fan fiction. the FMC is an 18 year old sheltered girl who *spoilers* apparently is (checks notes) prepared for anything her terrible family throws at her. Did I mention that her family is terrible, oh they're the worst, the worst, did Flynn mention they're bad? bad people with bad things doing bad bad bad. Like good gravy we got the point. Also, Jesus all of a sudden she is almost assaulted but then someone comes and saves her and has the most intense sex of her life with someone she doesn't know their name and has also never had sex before but then is like a sex machine? this is literally within the first 5-6 chapters of the book. nothing about this book is salvageable in my opinion. I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

I wasn't sure how I would like the start of a new series.....WOW I was dumb..lol Should have trusted Erin and her story telling....sorry I didn't have your back

But OMG Bevin has had to deal with so much in her short 18 years and to have the smarts to do what she has done and to keep going...another hit Erin

Not the typical bang of a start that this author usually has in her books. The beginning was all tell and no show while skipping over intriguing parts to rush through the storyline. I almost gave up reading because it was so bland but I know this author is talented so I pushed through hoping it would get better. It did, but only slightly.

The plot about the FMC (Bevin) is a huge plothole.

Spoilers: ⬇️

She’s eighteen and finally gets free of her abusive family and goes to college. That was great. But then we find out she’s super rich because of a secret company she owns. So what’s the point of going to college? Academically she’s ahead of everyone because she’s extremely smart. She’s only behind when it comes to her power but all she needed was to hire a tutor to help her with that. Which she did. I just don’t understand the point of her needing college since she’s already wildly successful and has been for years.

Also, she didn’t need college in order to get free of her family. All she had to do was petition the court (which she did) and show proof of her families evilness (which she had.) the whole being attacked on campus that her family paid to have happen resulting in the court petition wasn’t even needed. The author wanted to write a college trope which is great, but this character clearly doesn’t need college and her being there makes zero sense especially since being there puts her in unnecessary danger.

Also, this author hates men. In all of her books it’s always the same. The FMC flips out over stupid simple things the MC’s do or say and the FMC treats them like garbage. If you’re going to do this then at least make the MC’s do something truly mean/bad to where the FMC’s actions are justified instead of the whole “I deserve to be worshipped like a queen and you are lucky I even let you near.” Tactic.

Especially since nowhere in this world are poly relationships considered “normal” or even heard of. She’s stringing multiple guys along without them even knowing at first and she would absolutely have a fit if one of the guys started dating another girl at the same time. Somehow the guys are just okay with it once it comes out? They’re fine sharing the same girl for what? Because she’s the hottest, smartest, most powerful, special snowflake in existence? Not buying it and it makes Bevin seem like a spoiled narcissistic brat. I actually side with the mean girl bully in this book that calls her a princess.

If I continue this series it’s only because of the cute animals and with the hope that Bevin’s character actually gets better and she treats her guys with the same respect she demands they give her.

It’s like a cheap theater production with all of the unnecessary monologues she’s allowed. Many of the sentences are too long, nonsensical, or obviously missed in revisions, ruining any sense or success in delivering the statement.

The whole beginning holds too much triumph for the main character. Who wants to read about someone with everything already going well for them? If there’s no struggle over which to prevail, then why must we?

The first spice scene felt like the author was thinking so hard about not making it rapey, that it inherently became peppered with it. Like, there’s consent, but there’s still something icky about it.

All of 20-30% in, is a snoozefest. A council meeting that they speak in secret phrases to hide information from even us, that information then being delivered to us in an entire chapter that could’ve been a paragraph, and in depth details of paperwork filed. Paperwork!!!!

Some parts made me feel like I was having a stroke. I even tried reading them aloud in different accents to see if it’s simply a dialect difference, which only assured those around me of my apparent stroke in progress. Especially when the things I was saying didn’t make sense to them either.

Maybe it’s just a new way of talking that isn’t yet widely known, but it’s still too much actively incorrect universal grammar and punctuation.

All of her soapbox monologues give off the vibes of someone telling a story about how they boldly told someone off ‘and then everyone clapped.’
More cringe than impressive.

‘Everyone laughed’ or ‘stood gaping in awe’ at the reclusive untrained witch with awful rambling comebacks whose only companions and main interactions in the two decades of her life have been animals? Namely a tree frog?? I don’t buy it.

She’s sooo insufferably full of herself for someone who lived with 50+ people who actively hated her her whole life. Ex:
“Overall, I was dressed to kill and looking like I knew it but it didn’t take much effort whereas other women couldn’t hit this level if they spent weeks trying.”
Maybe her family was onto something by traditionally sacrificing their youngest. She sucks.

I had to DNF at 43%. It’s just unsalvagable in the cringe despite the potential in the plot. Awful attempt at banter with more misworded phrases that wouldn’t even be good if they were correct. The childish power plays and assertion of her assumed superiority places me on the side of the strangers bullying her.

Awesome start to a new journey

I was a little unsure about starting this series with AU ending here soon. I love AU and I am a little sad to see it go, but am happy that Tamsin will get her HEA (fingers crossed). I always prefer a completed series instead of waiting for a book. But we have Erin who writes wonderfully and quickly.

I don’t really read her reviews, if it is AU, HOG or Karma’s Bakery it is an automatic preorder, but I have seen some that make me feel for her.

Did I see a lot of similarities between her characters cross series? Yes. Do I care? Nope. I repeat some of the same phrases constantly, phases I have heard from people all over the world. Does it matter? No it doesn’t. So why does it matter when an author does this? I rather read the same description of a character in every one of her series but get a unique story that is full of zest and pleasure then care what a character looks like. Just like a lot of her characters have male and or mate issues. Again so what?! At least you get to see all the different sides of them and see how they handle something and it’s not just insta love and done.

**Possible Spoilers**

Now about MU. This is going to be another great series. I love love love the different POVs, and it was an interesting twist to see some from someone outside of the assumed harem. It is always great to be able to see what someone thinks instead of what they say, and this is going to be a nice addition.

I really like how Bevin is going to be a big deal but has to build herself up to that deal. Tamsin had to learn it too, but she came out with a bang that just kept getting bigger and louder (not a complaint). Bevin on the other hand is going to have to build herself and her power up and I can’t wait to read how she does it. I also like how we know she will have 5 (ok, we know she should have) mates/husbands whether we have met them all or not, it is still something to look so forward to!!

So to end this thank you again Erin for hours of pure pleasure in reading your books past, present and future and know that I am on this ride with you and your characters!!!

tried twice

I had tried to read this before and couldn’t remember why I didn’t like it. Since KU keeps recommending it I decided to give it another try and within 2 chapters remembered everything I disliked the first go around. If you want a nonsensical heroine this is definitely the book for you. At first the heroine is interesting, hidden powers, has been abused and is headed to an academy which is fairly standard for this trope, then it slowly slides into “not again” territory. If “smash the patriarchy” was a genre this would be it. If you played a drinking game with the word sexist you’d be in the hospital with alcohol poisoning before half the book was over. All the men are sexist and bad except her deceased grandfather, from her attorney all the way down to the guy that rescued her and saved her from her families machinations. The second drinking game could be the word purity. She inherits her grandfathers estate (which he seems to have kept hidden from everyone in her all reaching family) and a popular business that brings in SO much money but it’s basically a toy shop for pets (familiars really but still) . I dunno? I’m at about 20% and could really not care less about this FMC, all I’m hoping for now is that it will stop showing up on my “discover new books” page. Seriously wish Amazon would add a feature where you didn’t have to actually retry a book and it just showed up as “you quit this book at __%” so you’d know at which point you gave up.

Utterly Flippin’ Brilliant! **NO SPOILERS **

Wow, what an awesome read! I’ve had this on my tbr pile for a while now, mostly because I’m a greedy reader and didn’t want to wait between books.

Bevin Shaw is a witch and the youngest child of the Shaw family and she’s playing a dangerous game where the stakes really are life and death. The only family member who’s ever treated her with any kindness was her grandfather and he’s passed on now.

Her parents and grandmother are monstrous. Fortunately for Bevin she discovered at an early age that the adults in her family really are evil. Taking advice from a close friend they contrived to hide her magical ability. It was a close run thing but they were successful in keeping it under wraps. If she hadn’t been successful then they would have carried out their original plan, to sacrifice her and gift her magic to the heir apparent their oldest son. No stress?

Bevin has one chance to escape, she’s going to Morrigan University even “magical duds” are entitled to a university degree. First she just has to manipulate her father into placing a magically binding wager with her. If she wins they will proceed with disowning her, if she loses she will marry for the benefit of the family. Life is complicated when your best outcome is being disowned. Easy right? Probably not.

A good start

Overall, I enjoyed this book quite a bit, and I'm curious and eager to see what else is in store for Bevin and her bevy of beaus (sorry, I couldn't resist the wordplay and alliteration), despite some of the conflict seeming avoidable and a few minor spelling and grammatical errors.

I like the dichotomy of Bevin as a character, and the contrast of her "sheltered" upbringing and social naivety with her newfound independence and growing confidence. I also appreciated the way characters were introduced, and the use of background checks and safety concerns as plot devices to provide insight into characters' personalities and motivations. It was done simply, and worked well without being forced or heavy-handed, and without having to slog through tons of "exposition" for the sake of character development. I enjoy a good lead-up, but I'm far too impatient for that. I hope Bevin makes some female friends soon because she needs at least a bestie (that isn't on her payroll).

If I could give this book 4.5 stars, I would, but instead I'm rounding up cause the book itself was good, just needs a few editing fixes (there's a you're instead of your at one point towards the end that really stuck out lol)

Parts of this were interesting. I found the FMC occasionally extremely annoying, and there were a few obvious plot holes, but the relationships were interesting, especially between Bevin and her growing harem. That said, this would have been an easy 3 or 4 stars except that the grammar and sentence structure are TERRIBLE. It needs extensive editing; there were times when the sentence became so convoluted the subject switched three times. Then there were sentences that were so badly structured that what was written had the opposite meaning as what was intended. Many of them were run ons, and many more were fragments. I taught grammar for years and do not feel I’m exaggerating when I say there were more ungrammatical sentences than grammatical ones. Yes, fragments can be powerful. Yes even run on sentences can be used effectively, particularly in dialogue, to properly portray someone’s mood or speech patterns/personality. But when over 50% of the sentences are flawed (and honestly, it’s probably closer to 70%) then there’s a very real problem.

I like the guys, and how they’re dealing with each other. Wyatt is an ass and needs a good pummeling, but the others are sweet. I might pick up book 2 in hopes the editing improves, but I’m pretty skeptical right now.

Is this book written horribly? Yes. The grammar issues are off the chart. Strangely written conversations and the pov written in odd sequences? Absolutely, it is a cluster. How 1 person can be so naive and yet attuned with the world drove me fucking insane. Did I also just sit here this week and finish all 4 completed books just hoping a miracle would happen? Also yes. I genuinely thought the 1st book garbage was novice writing ( I didn’t know the author before this series). I now understand a bit better, doesn’t mean the book is better, but seeing some of their series are so long the boringness and bullshit make more since. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how I got to book 4 and didn’t have a clue who the actual men would be that ended up being for her. This series is ridiculous and if some one recommends it to you, THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND. HOWEVER, am I also the asshole that will read the final book when this series is completed? Fuck yes I will. The idea of this books is amazing and kudos to creativity of it but the repetition, the unsureness of the main female character - is she an adult or not - the whole thing pisses me off but I want see how the world ends. I hate me for even wanting to know

Disappointing

I’ve read previous works by this author and truly loved them. This book however left me frustrated. Without giving spoilers away the FMCs actions just didn’t fit her story line of a sheltered, abused woman at times. She suffered major trauma and completely acted like everything was fine in a matter of days. No trust building just right into the deep.

I also hate one of the MMCs. He’s slimy. But maybe that’s the idea? I’m not sure.

It also focused A LOT on her body, how hot she was how “large and perfect” her …assets… were. It was strange. Authors don’t usually overly sexualize the descriptions of the characters but in this book that occurred time and time again. Very strange and cringy. She also used her “hot” body often to lure men yet she is supposed to be a sheltered abused woman in her first few weeks from under her family’s thumb…

Concept was good overall. I’m not sure I’ll continue on with this series. If I do it will be because of the authors other works and me crossing my fingers for redemption for the author.

There was much potential for this book, and I truly wanted to like it; however, it did not pick up the way that I wanted to. the book felt very repetitive. The FMC dished plenty of her secrets and overshared to many of the guys nearly upon meeting them. Socially awkward is one thing, but this level of TMI was over the top. The relationships had no depth in them or were rushed to fit in all over the place. The plot started off well but spiraled and was very full of cringe worthy pet names and misconceptions. and the guys unfortunately sounded nearly similar, I get she's pretty, but she comes with a ton of baggage, and I did not see the insta-lust appeal- maybe there will be a paranormal angle but so far nothing to explain instantly hopping into bed with someone, multiple times you know I knowing them for a couple of hours. Fast paced is fine, just like it to make a little more sense with more substance, character development, and depth. Overall, I did finish the book but was left underwhelmed.

Morrigan University

Great start to a new series. PNR, magic, University setting, multiple love interests, abused childhood, discovered heritage. Our heroine is an 18 year old witch born into a powerful, but immoral, magic family. She is able to speak to animals, who warn her, when she is just 7, to always hide her power, because her family will sacrifice her and give her magic to her brother. Protected by her grandfather, she hides her power and he helps build her a life away from her evil family. The story begins as she is allowed to attend University, where she becomes emancipated, starts learning traditional magic and meets several handsome admirers. The writing style is somewhat "Stream of consciousness" which makes it hard to understand. It could use more punctuation and less run on sentences. It's a great story though and I look forward to continuing the series.
