Called by a Viking #5

La cautiva del vikingo

Rate this book

I liked this a lot more than the last book I gave 2 stars to. I'm conflicted about giving this 2 stars or 3 stars. It's somewhere in between for me.

I'm not sure what else to say, besides Donna wasn't my favorite heroine. I didn't really feel the love or connection between them. Let's be real, they had nothing in common.

It was a short, fast read, which I appreciated. This book did make me want to go back and finish watching Vikings though. Some of the characters in this book had the same name as the characters in Vikings. For example, Sigurd, Floki, and Halfdan. This book also made me want to sleep in a bed with soft, warm furs. It sounds so cozy. 🤗🤗🤗

I really enjoyed this book. Well written and great characters. It was well balanced with some light hearted moments and some not so much. Really good.

Given the premise, I was really hoping for a romantic comedy. It could have been so awesome... but it never went for the funny. One dimensional characters with a flat plot. Dnf'ed, never even got a chuckle. Pity.

As a fan of the series Vikings, and newly arrived member to time travel romances, I had to read this book.

I previously read a time travel romances set in Scotland at somewhat the time as Outlander. I had a hard time with the Scottish dialect , the titles and clan histories. Thankfully I had no such problem here.

I find myself more enjoying Time travel romances that take place during the Viking eras. Things are easier to understand and I like the references to the Norse Gods.

It was a lovely romances taking place between a modern day lawyer who fights for women and their rights, and the chieftain of a Viking clan preparing for war.

Once I picked up the book I couldn't put it down for one second. Donna was such a great character. Fiery and confident. Not scared to stand up for the women of the village even though it's another era. Sigurd, behind his gruff exterior has a heart of gold. He falls hard for Donna right from the start.

It's a bit of a generation clash between the two heroes as you can imagine. The author did a great job at writing this story, I easily imagined the village in Vikings , taking character from the show to features the characters in this book. I used Bjorn as Sigurd haha. And for Floki and Asa I used the characters Floki and his wife from Vikings. It worked perfectly for me and aloud me to enjoy the story at it's full potential.

There was little drama, close to no angst and a little bit of action near the end. Other than that the story is focused on the romance between the characters.

All in all, I would recommend this book to any who enjoy romance involving Vikings as well as those who enjoy time travel romances.

I doubt I'll reread this book but I will read the rest of this series for sure.

**Disclosure** I'm on the review team of Mariah Stone. I was given the First Edition of this ARC of this book to read and give my honest review. That said onto my honest review.
First of all Thanks to Mariah Stone. I was not sure what to expect from this viking time travel romance but I certainly wasn't disappointed. I really liked how the author brought a woman from the 21st century and viking time together. I liked how she taught the viking men that woman aren't property and they can help and do some things just like men. I liked how it was applied in the book too. I'm excited and can't wait to read the other books in the viking romance time travel books. My suggestion: read Book 1 first(this book) then the others in the series. I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars but went with 5 stars because it was a page turner and kept me wanting to know what happened next. Love books like this.

Not my cup of tea!

While I do not object to sex scenes, I lose interest in the story pretty quick when virtual strangers shed their clothes so quickly into the beginning of the book.! I imagine for this time period, sex was the only form of entertainment. But, in my opinion, leaving out some of the detail or changing it somewhat, would make the story more interesting. Maybe I just don't "get it"!!!

I was looking forward to reading this book but unfortunately it didn't really work for me.

Donna is a lawyer working in partnership with her mother. They focus on cases where women have been treated unfairly. She is in court one day when she sees an old woman with a gold spinner. When she goes to see if the woman needs anything Donna is talked into taking hold of the spinner. She's then transported back in time to Norway during the time of the Viking.

She runs into Sigurd, the Jarl of the area. His village was pillaged the previous year and he knows it will be soon again. He's working hard with his men to shore up the defenses before the next raid. He believes Donna has been sent from the future to help but she of course knows nothing. What she does know is if the women help, they have a good chance of getting done in time. Signed absolutely refuses this idea. Women have their place and it's not doing any kind of work men do. But Donna goes ahead and organizes the women anyway and sure enough they make great progress. But Sigurd still does not earthen working on this.

Donna is very frustrated with him but at the same time is very attracted to him, as he is to her. But he's the music man she avoids. This is a brief outline. Sadly I couldn't connect to either the story or the main characters. A number of things just didn't add up for me and I know this is a book I wouldn't read again. It was ever but for me it was all right and I want more from the books I read.

Passionate

This very well written time travel romance was the best. The passion and character development within Donna and Sigurd's strong personalities shows with each page read. Loved the book and definitely want more. Totally recommend you take the time to travel back in time to Norway.

I hardly ever read time travel, or viking based books ... not through choice but I just haven't had a chance to and after reading this I definitely need to read more of both these genres. I really enjoyed watching this modern woman met a strong warrior from a time she doesn't know, nor understand. It was exciting and I'm looking forward to learning more from this series.

Mariah Stone provided me with an ebook ARC of The Jewel of Time, the next book in her Called by a Viking series (release date January 3, 2019). Because it was the second book, I bought the ebook of The Fortress of Time to read first. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that each book is a stand alone. They do not have to be read in order. That’s always a plus!

Mariah Stone’s Called by a Viking series is classified as time travel romance. I’m a fan of time travel fiction, but admit that I am new to the romance aspect. I was a little concerned that any love scenes would be cheesy. Not at all! I’ll even admit to blushing and my heart racing a few times during each story.

My favorite parts have to be the comments made by the Viking heroes. In The Fortress of Time, Sigurd tells Donna “Your words are as tangled as Loki’s beard” when he doesn’t understand something she says. In The Jewel of Time, Kolbjorn would say things like “Loki’s sweaty ass” or “Thor’s balls.” Comments like these add a little humor to the stories.

As I said earlier, I haven’t had much experience with romance novels. They were never ‘my thing.’ But, I truly enjoyed The Fortress of Time and The Jewel of Time and I look forward to reading any future books in the series. These books were a quick read, which was a nice change from the longer books I’ve been reading lately. There was drama, romance and some light-hearted moments. For all of these reasons, I give both The Fortress of Time and The Jewel of Time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

Viking's Captive was a steamy time travel romance set in the 8th century in Norway. Donna is an attorney who works to secure women's rights in present day New York City. At a trial she sees an ex who burned her in the past and caused her to swear off any man that might take advantage of women. Before the trial begins a woman gives her a spindle and she finds herself transported to the time of Vikings. There she meets Sigurd the jarl of his community and he also dismisses women as being weak and distrustful. These two are an unlikely pair but we end up with an action packed novel with lots of romance.

This novel is part of a series and I had not read the other books. It did not diminish my enjoyment of the novel. The novel was also a very quick read. There were times when I did find Sigurd an overbearing male and I wanted Donna to smack him over the head. I read a lot of historical fiction and I think the author did a great job with the time period. It was easy to visualize. Overall, I think this is a great addition to the historical time travel romance genre.

I received this advanced copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to BookSirens and Stone Publishing.

I had fun going back to the Vikings era with this book and I feel I enjoy this author's writing style so I am definitely going to read more of her books.

Donna and Sigurd shared something special and the part I liked the most is how Donna made Sigurd understand the importance of including women in his strategies, they both kept an open mind towards everything and learnt to work together.

The epilogue was the perfect end to their story.

Time Travel done right!

This is a story of a New York lawyer who has turned against men & their hurtful ways. She, Donna, is carried back in time to meet a jarl who is also jaded. Together they learn to open their hearts and find strength & love. Was a great story with strong characters who I believe you will like as much as I did!

Mariah Stone's Gift to Us!

The Fortress of Time is the first of all of the books Mariah Stone wrote that I have read, but I will read all of her books! I read this one without stopping! I was so involved with the storyline her her ability to make each character so real, that time passes so quickly. Due to some explicit sexual content, mature readers advised.

**Post-reading note: Mariah Stone is relaunching this series with new names, covers and book descriptions. She stated this in Booksprout. This book is "Viking's Captive", which WAS named "The Fortress of Time". It's also going to be book five, not book one. BUT these seem to be all standalone! Just wanted to make this note mostly for future me when the books come out (which will be within the next few weeks *happy dancing*!), so that I can add these reviews to those books on GR!**

I want to start off by staying I received this book via Booksprout in return for my honest review.

If you look back on my "want to read shelf" you would see the book series "Called by a Viking" and the fact that I've wanted to read this series for so long but never pulled the trigger and bought the book is crazy! So I'm so happy that I was able to read the start of the series because of Booksprout!

Okay on to the review.

This is the first viking book I've read and it blew me away. I think this is a great book for people who haven't went into the historical era of vikings. Mariah Stone pulls you into this world without making it too confusing. I say "too confusing" because the viking terms are so detailed that it is very easy to get lost. In this first book, I didn't get lost much!!

This is also my first time traveler romance book. I honestly didn't know it was a thing until I found this series lol And before I read this book I had this feeling I'd think it was cheesy or too out there to feel like a romance book. But Stone changed that perspective for me REAL QUICK!

Do I think time traveling is a far fetched thing? Yes. Do I think it would be hard to create a book about it and it be not too off the wall? Yes. But when I tell you Stone did an amazing job with this story. The details for both the past and future scenes were so good. I didn't feel like I was loosing anything among the two times.

And the relationship she created with the fmc and mmc was beautiful! Again I thought there would be something off with the two of them being from different times, but Stone made it feel seamless. Well as seamless as she could when two people have no idea what the heck is going on lol

I found that I enjoyed the two characters slowly coming to the realization that the fmc was from the future. And that they both weren't too stubborn when it came to talking about it. I guess it comes from my love a good communication skills lol

I loved that both characters were strong in their personalities. I fell in love with both of them and loved how they BOTH were able to figure out how to see one another's side of things.

I feel like I could go on and on when it comes to this book. I seriously loved it! And I can't wait to dive into the next one.

Again, thank you Mariah Stone via Booksprout of this ARC!!

I loved this. Talk about women's rights. This story shows how women were capable of many things if the men of their time would only take a chance and allow them to do so. Norway 871AD vs NYC 2018. Men back then were still chauvinistic as present-day men. This story held my attention from page one. There was fighting to protect the H's village, men were slaughtered and died on both sides. The enemy’s side and the H's side. The H's side prevailed. The H was building a fortress around the village for defense. But there were half as many men than before the raid of the enemy. He was doubtful they would finish before another raid would come. The H was the leader of his people the jarl. 2018 NYC the h is a lawyer fighting for women who have been discriminated against. She had learned from her mother and her own experience that alpha men were selfish, self-centered and chauvinistic. She would never trust them again. In the middle of a court hearing a Norn approached the h and she was transported to a village in Norway 871 AD. The Norn had told her that there was a man there that needed her. This story covers the h coming to terms with her surroundings and how she could mobilize the women to help the men build the fortress and train to help fight during a raid. The H hated what the h was doing and forbade it; threatened to banish anyone who disobeyed. It was interesting how the h and H came to an understanding and to trust one another as equals. It was amazing what got accomplished. The romance between the h and H was primal and raw animal attraction as well as a deep soul binding connection neither could explain. They were each other's missing half. I loved the h and H's characters. They were confident, bold, assertive, hardworking, dedicated, focused and loyal. It was easy to identify with these character's feelings and emotions as they were very realistic. I loved this story and wished it did not end. I wanted more, more and more. I was intrigued from the beginning. This is definitely a page turn and I highly recommend it.

A Norn, A Lawyer, An ancient Viking

Norway 870 AD, Sigurd n his father r waiting on the shore for the return of Vigdis. She had been sent to seek aid from another Jarl. Fuldarr saw an opportunity, he married Vigdis, returning to wage war n take possession of the smaller jarldom. His father, Randver had always said, "Never trust a woman". Those were the words he remembered as his father died on the battlefield. But Sigurd finally repelled the invaders. The cost was high as many fell that day enemy n friends. He ruled with an iron will, no woman r allowed the freedom once afforded by his sister. Their duties lie with maintaining the home, cooking, cleaning...etc. So when a woman suddenly appears in their midst upsetting the status quo he's furious but also attracted to her.
NY 2018, Donna Cox is a lawyer who champions "women's rights". Her 4 clients were fired by Cinderellas Inc after becoming pregnant. She n her mom run a firm together that's becoming quite successful. After seeing who the opposing attorney will be she steps out to the lobby control her emotions. An old woman approached her n says there's a man who needs ur help. The next thing she knows she's in a different country n speaking the native tongue. What's more he's handsome, arrogant, domineering n a total jerk. But so like the dream man she wants it's uncanny. She still believes that woman can do just as much as a man can do n rallies all the woman behind her to help rebuild n fortify the jarldom. Much to the chagrin of Sigurd.
Really liked this time travel story about an alpha Viking n a modern day woman, along with their sizzling chemistry, as they learn to battle their demons n slowly gain each other's trust.

Credit to the writer for dealing with the language issue rather than ignoring it as many writers of time travel romance are wont to do. The heroine is able to speak and understand Norse via magic. Okay, cool. However, the history aspect falls apart. The hero explains, "you are here, with me, in Norway". The problem is that in 870 what we now call Norway was not a country. The North Land, called by Vikings Noregr, which was old Norse for North way or northward road, was a land of many small Kingdoms. The process of unification had begun with numerous battles and dialogues happening across the land. This is completely ignored. Sigurd would have said you are here in - either a real name of a historical kingdom, or the name of an imaginary kingdom.

The whole waking up in a stranger's bed in a strange place and chalking it up to "I'm dreaming", is a lazy trope. Who ever woke up, not half awake (in that place between sleep and wakedullness) but really totally awake, and didn't know the difference? There are lucid dreams, yes, but this is just foolishness.

Anywayyyy.. another one goes in the DNF pile. I think I should just "remove from my shelf". It's not looking good for me with so many on the DNF shelf. I swear, there are books I love with my whole heart. I just need to find more of them.
