Mystery: A candidate for Princess is murdered at a Native American Pow Wow while Tempe is working there in her capacity as deputy. Tempe's investigation takes her into the Yanduchi reservation, and Hutch has difficulty with Tempe's growing interest in her own native heritage as she seeks the identity of the killer.
Marilyn Meredith is the author of over thirty published novels, including the award winning Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery series and the under the name F. M. Meredith, the Rocky Bluff P.D. series. She borrows a lot from where she lives in the Southern Sierra for the town of Bear Creek and the surrounding area, including the nearby Tule River Indian Reservation.
For the Rocky Bluff P.D. series, she uses a lot she remembers from her time living on the coast, in a place much like Rocky Bluff.
She does like to remind everyone that she is writing fiction. Marilyn is a member of EPIC, three chapters of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, and on the board of the Public Safety Writers of America Series: * Deputy Tempe Crabtree
This is a fast-paced mystery featuring Tempe Crabtree, a sheriff's deputy, who has been assigned to cover a pow-wow near the Bear Creek Indian reservation. When a murder occurs on the site, Tempe is swept up in much of the local drama. She is only beginning to learn about her own ancestry, having only returned to the area in recent years. She now has a grown son and a new husband who is a pastor at the church in town. With the help of tribal leaders and her own ability to win the trust of key tribal members, she is able to piece together this puzzling murder mystery. It will be interesting to see what happens in book #2.
Tempe Crabtree isn't one to follow orders. She is a deputy sheriff who doesn't suffer fools easily. In this initial volume of a series she uses her logic skills to solve a murder that the detectives were ready to pin on the wrong person.
This novel is the first in the Tempe Crabtree series. The book was well written and very easy to read quickly for me.
Tempe Crabtree is a deputy in a small community outside a Reservation and happens also, to be newly married, a mother, and half American Indian. The latter fact gets her assigned to secure a yearly Pow Wow. Pow Wow are festivals that celebrate the faith, culture, music, foods, and philosophies of the Native Americans. If you ever get a chance to visit one near you, you should really try and attend.
Tempe is patrolling and dealing with minor disturbances while the main event, crowning of the Princess, approaches.
This novel has adventure, suspense, well-drawn characters, and mysteries. The novel also blends in Tempe's life and its joys and struggles.
There is a timelessness to this book. So, although I was fortunate to read a first edition from 1999, I understand it has been re-released, as the entire series has. So treat yourself to a great read and new series!
This is the first of Marilyn's Tempe Crabtree books. Tempe is half Yanduchi Indian, a deputy sheriff in a small town near the reservation. The story involves the murder of a young girl slated to be named Princess at the big Pow Wow on the reservation. Tempe is an engaging character who suffers pangs of guilt over neglecting her husband and son while trying to find a murderer. You get an interesting look at reservation life, plus plenty of action as Tempe dodges bullets when things get down and dirty.
I liked this book. It involved Indians (Native Americans ) on the reservation and local town police. Same scenario most whites don't like Indians .Indians had their own police for the reservation .They were having a Pow Wow in town that day. It explains a lot about the dances they do & why. Other traditions too. They had a princess contest and sold tickets . One of the girls was murdered . Tempe the reservations authority tries to find out on her own who did it. They had a lot of suspects. But at first the local police told her to keep her nose out of it. But she didn't.
I enjoyed the characters and getting a sample of the Yanduchi (spelling?) Indian culture. I am 1/2 Yupik Eskimo and barely know about my heritage so I can relate to Tempe Crabtree.
This is a fantastic series! Tempe Crabtree is part Yanduchi & also a deputy for the Police at Bear Creek. Her husband, Hutch is the town Preacher & her son works as a Fireman! You find that the characters are so realistic you feel like you are right there with them! I've bought the whole series to read straight through. Once you start you can't stop!
