Imagine your best friend invites you on an all-expenses-paid trip.
Luxury at its finest.
A five-star resort, designer shopping sprees, fine dining, and balling out like there’s no tomorrow. She swears her new man is head over heels for her and doesn’t mind spending big.
While she’s out on a date, you decide to unwind with a bubble bath. The warmth relaxes you, lulling you into comfort. You dip your head beneath the water, letting the silence consume you. But when you resurface, the silence is shattered.
A man is standing there. Watching you.
Before you can scream, darkness takes over.
You're knocked out, blindfolded, tied up, and on a jet—your paradise suddenly replaced with the cold reality of Staten Island, New York.
That’s when you learn the truth.
Your best friend stole a lot of money from a very powerful man. A man with ties to an even more powerful family. And to save herself, she didn’t run.
She offered you up instead.
The blindfold is yanked away, but at first, all you see is darkness. Then, as your vision adjusts, you lock eyes with him.
A tall, brown-skinned man, his body inked with tattoos.
I had high hopes when I picked up 10,000 Hours with a rich Meance. The cover of the book has me intrigued and the premise of a young girl who exists in her own world, piqued my interest. It seemed like a book that promised depth and originality. However, after diving into the story, I found myself struggling to continue after only 84 pages.
The plot revolves around a young girl whose best friend manipulates her and introduces her to a character named Menace. While the setup was promising, the pace of the narrative was incredibly slow, making it difficult to remain engaged. There was potential for a deeper exploration of the characters, especially the protagonist's unique perspective, but unfortunately, it felt underdeveloped.
One of the more perplexing aspects was the protagonist's tendency to give people random nicknames, such as calling someone named Stevie Ray "Wonder" or referring to another character by various colors of the rainbow. This quirk was never adequately explained and left me confused. It seemed as though the author attempted to weave in elements of ADHD and OCD in the protagonist's characterization, but it wasn't executed in a way that felt authentic or relatable.
The writing style contributed to my frustration. It felt disjointed, almost as if the book were written by AI, lacking the natural flow and coherence that one expects from a seasoned writer. The narrative jumped from one part to another without the necessary connective tissue, leaving gaps that disrupted the reading experience.
While I believe the book has potential, it ultimately fell short for me. The character of Menon, a tough individual with OCD and ADHD, was intended to be complex and intriguing. However, his portrayal came across as clichéd and corny, making it hard to sympathize with him or the situations he found himself in.
Despite these shortcomings, I do think the author has promise. With tighter pacing and more depth in character development, this story could have been much more engaging. Unfortunately, as it stands, *10,000 Hours* didn't quite hit the mark for me.
DNF 20% This is so unserious its like a parody He’s threatening their lives for stealing from him, she turns around and he starts singing “is there anymore room for me in the jeans” Deadass Bye
THIS MAN IS SO UNHINGED!! HE HAS OCD AND ORGANIZED HIS FOOD IN THE FRIDGE IN COLOR OF VEGETABLES AND FRUIT 😂 AND HE IS BOLD MOTHERFUCKER, IF SOMEONE STINKS HE WILL SAY IT OUT LOUD🤣 HE’S MEAN TO CALLING HIS NEW ASSISTANT (Greene) EVERY DAMN COLOR BUT HER NAME😭 GREENE WAS EVEN HAPPY WHEN HE CALLED HER EMERALD BECAUSE TECHNICALLY A TYPE OF GREEN 🤣 AND HE GOT STEVIE ARRESTED FOR “stealing HIS PUSSY AND the ring he gave her” AND STEVIE IS PERFECT TO TAME HIS CRAZY ASS
Okay let’s start with that “squeaky clean” line because wow. It’s 2025, and we’re still writing women as “clean” or “dirty” based on whether they’ve had sex? That alone set the tone for what kind of story this was going to be. The author clearly wanted to build some old-school possessive tension, but it comes off as outdated and lowkey misogynistic.
The female lead is painfully bland. She’s supposed to be innocent and quirky, but it reads more like “confused and underwritten.” I mean, she’s kidnapped and talking about stealing grapes? Girl, be serious. There’s a fine line between soft and stupid, and unfortunately, the book keeps tripping over it.
And the male lead, whew. The whole “aggressive, mysterious, emotionally unavailable man who loves hard” thing could’ve worked if there was any nuance, but it’s all surface-level bravado. The way he’s framed as this irresistible, dominant figure feels lazy, especially when his mental illness is treated like a cute little personality trait that flares up when the plot needs drama. That’s not complexity, that’s convenience.
Speaking of convenience, the entire story feels too neat. Things just fall into place because the author says so. There’s no real emotional build-up, no tension that feels earned. Just “boom, they’re in love,” and the rest of the world bends around that.
Honestly, I think what frustrates me most is that urban fiction can be raw, emotional, and layered when done right. But here, it’s just tired tropes and insta-love dipped in aesthetic quotes. It’s trying to be deep but never really says anything new.
So yeah, note to self: never read a book because you feel left behind. Some hype trains are better missed.
3.5 this was a highly anticipated novel for me, I couldn’t wait to learn more about Menace and Stevie. Not gonna hold yall I felt like the lead up and promo was better than the actual story. While Stevie wasn’t my favorite FMC she wasn’t the worse either. I struggled with her and Menace’s ability to effectively communicate. At times she just gave Aimee but the ditzy part turned up to the max never turning off. At other times she gave a girl lost trying to find her footing by floating through life. A sweet heart forreal but she lacked consideration I’m not gonna hold you. While everyone’s diagnosis is different and will have different symptoms and outcomes she just lacked consideration for others. I know sometimes ADHD makes people struggle with personal relationships and inability to read the room but girl. My biggest example is the whole quiet hour, yes maverick was wrong for cursing but I’m sorry social cues be damned you walk in and see a person reading, proceed to ramble get no response and can’t grasp the hint that he wants quiet. Yes menace should’ve made that clear but PLEASE MAN he ain’t never said much to you in the morning, don’t like loud noises and chaos AND YOU SAY TO YOURSELF LET ME GO IN HERE AND TALK, talk and talk some more lmaoo like even with the lack of response. Yeah no she stressed me out bad and I do wish we would’ve seen more growth out of her. Like her concern for their family dynamic over her own personal growth, well being and connection to her family and her husband was less than desirable. I know sometimes people experience that rejection sensitivity but it’s like you going out your way to peace up his family but in the same breath think that Skyler only rocks with you cus some made up familial obligations?? Unpack that before you tend to the Caselli sibling drama.
Menace was a lot as well and majority of things only required him having a conversation or just giving miss girl a heads up. I could relate more to Menace in regard to stuff being overstimulating but brother you KIDNAPPED HER. Lmao like dang lay down some ground rules and go from there lmao both y’all got yall issues so make it easier to get along and deepen the connection. I’m glad he made sure Raye & Priscilla got what they deserved cus yeah Stevie might be gullible but she ain’t deserve that. As far as the sibling drama I’m sorry but Menace was wrong, not for clocking those people out but for not just telling his siblings. Like I get it you Brother Bear you defending ya family name and protecting them but you not communicating, you controlling and you don’t show affection. Like no matter what financial steps you took to provide for them everybody wants to feel loved in the way that makes sense for them. Like man admitted he was controlling admitted he was steam rolling them in order to get them to where they needed to be in life but not once does he talk about trying to connect with them, tell stories about they parents nothing just do it my way cus I said so, which is gonna push anyone away. I happy that Stevie has come along and is working to patch the family up but Menace just has to open up a little more to his siblings (mainly Landon and Zoya) because while yes you had to become a dad, you aren’t they dad forreal and it comes a time where it has to be separated cus they never knew y’all’s daddy and sometimes folks just want a big brother or sister.
Overall this story was cool and it did serve as a nice palette cleanser from the Delgatos, Inferno mess and she did drop hints and little nuggets to build anticipation for the upcoming stories and the different characters. So as a reader I still have more to look forward to.
The random outbursts of singing, I can say I understand. If someone says umbrella, of course Rihanna comes to mind.
This man would give someone a random nickname right after asking them what their name was, getting it completely wrong. I can see that his love language is acts of service and everyone around him understands that because I would be SO curious as to how he has so many loyal and loving people around him.
Then there is the random accusations that NO ONE ever did or said. It goes a little like this: Him: "You think she's pretty?" Person 1: "Yes" Him: "You calling my mother an ugly b*?!"
I KID YOU NOT! It went exactly like that many times!
It was insane. Definitely some funny parts in there because it's slightly my humor. It was so insane that I’m convinced this is satire. It HAS to be!! There’s just no way the author sat down to write this and said "You know what? Heck yeah"
All in all, I enjoyed it. Very entertaining. 10/10 would recommend.
**Do want to add this, I do NOT think it does a great job at providing a full representation of OCD, ADD or ADHD, which I don't think was the authors intention so do with that as you may. Just want to call out that if mental health is a trigger for you, definitely take some things with a grain of salt with this book
I get it now! Maverick & Wonder just start it! you’re in for a treat!
It’s the song recommendation for me omg!!! I see why Jahquel has the readers in a chokehold , I get it I get it man I get it !!! 😩
Cause this my first book from her now I gotta immediately see what Capone is checking for ! Let me get back down to 10,000 hours though. This book extremely good as freakkk , I laughed so much and was just smiling through majority pure bliss . I had to just sit in a couple scenes causeeeee 🤤 that dang Mens he was energy and Stevie-o also!
Mitchell & Wanda perfect for one another. ( I’m not getting into them just know it’s ALL THAT)
I just love everything about this book hooked from page 1.
So ready for Don book & to see how Corleon , Sky & Jeffie plays out now I’m so invested in them , I’m slick mad I started book one cause ugh I gotta wait! But I know it’s going to be worth cause I had timeee!!!
Menaceeeeee!!!! Oh how I love this man! His little quirks were so cute to me although I know Stevie wanted to slap him at times in the beginning lol… Her patience with him as well as his patience with her was truly heart warming. I love how Jahquel can keep us laughing and entertained, yet still brilliantly touch on more serious topics. I loved this journey with the Delgatos, but that Menace Caselli is truly something special. He can absolutely lock me in the closet and name our baby Denace the Menace! Greatttttt read!!
I’m struggling to think of the words to say about this book. Everything was just a no..
Menace character was beyond annoying and to have him as an OCD ADHAD main character but not do the proper research/ connection of this disorder bothered me. It felt like I was reading a bully who wanted folks to have sympathy yet he never was vulnerable and lacked depth!
Stevie was simply the dumbest FMC I’ve ever read, everything about her character bothered me. You let a so called bestie deposit thousands of dollars in your account and you asked zero questions? She had the brain of a 2 year old…
In the beginning she said that this book was a standalone yet all the characters had connections to previous books that took up so much space in the story. And if you don’t know the background you will be lost.
Lastly the biggest issue for me was the flashbacks thrown in at random. Like in the middle of a scene a flashback to something that had ZERO connection to what was currently happening in the book? Yea, no.
Overall review this was extremely overhyped and poorly written.
I want to say that I liked Menace and Stevie, but they were just okay. She came across as very naive and slow for a better part of the book and seemed to become more “normal” towards the end. Menace was more likable because he had many funny, off-the-wall moments. However, the internal dialogue was so lengthy and repetitive that it made it difficult to connect with them. The was way too much filler in this book. We did not need to here how weird each was every chapter.
Also, another turn off for me was that I’m a stickler about language, incorrect usage of tense changes, and misspellings in a book. The switch from past tense to present from one sentence to the next had me climbing up the wall.
The plot was there for the most part. However, the execution was not. This was probably my first and last read from the author.
Menaceeeeeee baby when I say crazy as hell… the most unhinged man I’ve met in a book behind a woman that I’ve seen in a long time. I enjoyed every single toxic ass moment. He may be my favorite even over Big Capp… I just am floored towards the end of the book I just could not stop screaming bc of the antics! Jahquel it’s something wrong with you sis lmbo I’m so tickled behind this man!
I do not play around with rating books 5 STARS ITS STRICT OVER HERE BABY.
I loved this downnnnn & the song suggestions were spot on. “Arraigned marriage” is my favorite kinda trope but Menace and Stevie were literally made for each other. It started off kinda slow but I had to realize it needed to be that way. Menace is a different type of man vs the Delgado men.
This book was also so damn funny especially when he called the cops. My kinda carrying on. They need another book or some 😭
When I say I was howling at this book the whole time🤣🤣🤣🤣 Maverick “Menace” Caselli is a CHARACTER I’m telling youuuuu🤣 and don’t get me started on Stevie or wonder as menace would say.
Jahquel did her thing with this book and I ate it right on up! If you haven’t read it ! READ….. IT!
I throughly enjoyed this book. I was laughing from beginning to end. Stevie was very sheltered and trying to find her way in life. Unfortunately but fortunately she gave her trust to the wrong person who put her life in the hands of Menace. Menace was a menace but the minute he laid eyes on Stevie he felt something. Stevie came and brought a controlled chaos into his life and he loved it.
The characters were likable enough to get through the story, but again this author definitely has a problem with repeating herself. It messes up the story so bad. I mean (this may sound insensitive) but I was sooooo tired of hearing this girl talk about her mama. I understand it was a great loss for her but it could have been expressed a different way. She wasn’t weird either idk what she did that was considered weird, she didn’t even start the whole talking to herself until she got with Menace. The author showed more of his differences, and told what was supposed to be weird about Stevie. I skipped most of the story because it was just a repeat of how they felt about each other and how they use to be lonely blah blah blah.. Steve repeated how she had no friends and the reasons in damn near every chapter. The author did this same thing in the Delgado series, the characters were likable but she repeated everything so much. And it always a girl that can’t ever match the men financially. It’s always a save a girl, it’s like her theme. I didn’t even read Capri I was pretty much over that series along time ago. Anyway if she would have stopped repeating herself on so many chapters and pages, we could have seen Menace as a father, which is one of the reasons I kept reading. I’m thinking I just knew she would get pregnant and have the baby in enough time to allow us to see them as parents. I mean had I known that she was gone drag this book all the way to the end and not give a chance to see menace in daddy mode I would have been stop reading. Not even in the epilogue, THAT COULD HAVE BEEN KEPT. I’m so disappointed I don’t think I want to read any more of her books. It’s a waste of time to drag stories.
3.5 They were a perfect match for each other. Maverick, I love his name btw, is the funniest character Jah has written. I find his quirks hilarious. So I was laughing at him the whole time. Sadly, I didn't feel much for Stevie; I didn't dislike her; she just wasn't memorable as an FMC for me. I don't know what more we could have gotten from her, but I feel like I needed something. Parts of her story were heartbreaking for sure. That nasty B*tch Angelica needs to be delt with. I hope that in Core's story, we see that predator meet the end she deserves.
Factually, eccentricity does not clearly define Menace or Wonder. I spent a great deal of the timing shaking my head during this story. One is enough for my reading pallet See what you think...
Absolutely loved it. I knew I would love a story about Menace just because he’s such an unhinged character but to see him in this light was perfect. I loved Stevie being described as quirky, and weird. I didn’t expect to be this giddy about him and Stevie’s relationship. The lead up to their arranged marriage really hit for me. Enjoyed everything about it. I Stan Duke and Stevie’s platonic friendship. Menace got me tight towards the end but he got it right. Definitely recommend.
I don’t know. I couldn’t really get into it and I skipped through a lot of the book. The main thing that bothered me about the book was the connection to other stories that I haven’t read. In the beginning of the book Jahquel mentions that this is a standalone and you don’t have to read previous books before reading this which is not the case. I was so confused on most of the story because it has ties to other books. My suggestion would be to get caught up on her other books before reading Menace and Stevie’s story.
