Spencer Hall is everything I shouldn’t want—star soccer captain, my roommate, and my best friend.

Luke

I’ve worked hard to get to the Collegiate semi-finals and make my dad proud by achieving what he never could. But everything changes when I have to share a dorm with my gorgeous best friend.

We’ve always been competitive, making harmless bets with dumb forfeits. He knows exactly how to get under my skin, and his constant flirting makes my heart race in ways I can’t explain.

As far as I know, I'm 100% straight. But when a bet turns into a kiss, my walls start to crumble. One kiss, and now I’m hooked. His touch ignites a fire in me I’ve never felt before, and I’m terrified of getting burned.

Winning the semi-finals has been my dream since I was a kid. I can’t afford any distractions—but Spencer is impossible to ignore.

The more we cross the line between friends, the less I want to stop.

Crossed Lines is a complete 25,000-word MM college romance novella told in dual POV. It features two stubborn soccer teammates, drunken balcony kisses, sporty men baking sweet treats, and the friends-with-benefits trope. It contains explicit scenes.

This was a really fun and fast paced short story about two best friends on a soccer team who fall for each other after one bets the other that he'll be better for him than anyone else....

I loved the relationship between Spencer and Luke, they were both clearly in denial about their feelings for each other for a really long time, and when they get together they're really sweet together. Luke is inexperienced and always considered himself to be straight, whereas Spencer is presumably bi or pan? I don't remember it being explicitly stated, but he had a lot more experience and was reluctant to ever have a meaningful relationship with anyone.

I think for me to have rated this higher though it really needed to be longer! There wasn't enough time to get to know the characters and their backstory so while it was fun to see their relationship go from best friends to boyfriends, I wasn't truly invested because I didn't feel like I knew the characters. Even their third act breakup didn't tug at my heartstrings because it felt like they'd only just got together, and then the book was done as soon as they reconciled!

*****

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review

Tropes: friends to lovers, roommates, college/sports romance
Feels: 3.5/5
Steam*: 3.5/5
Kinks: n/a
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM novella
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: some pining

Luke and Spencer are 3 years into college. They've known each other for 3 years. Spencer is openly bi or pan. They met at a party when Luke accidentally walked in on Spencer getting a bj for a guy, and Spencer was instantly interested in Luke and hit on him even given the situation. Luke thinks he's straight and he turned him down. They become BFFs and play soccer together and become roommates. Spencer is hoping to go pro. Spencer tries to not be into Luke, but he's always on the edge of his mind.

Luke thinks he's straight, he's had girlfriends, but he's never been successful with women. Something is never right. He's actually a virgin. One night Spencer makes an offhand comment and accidentally stumbles upon that truth and a bet about teaching him how to kiss turns into a kiss and then a friends with benefits arrangement. But these guys really fail at doing friends with benefits because it's pretty clear from the first hookup that they treat each other like boyfriends, that they care a lot. Spencer is avoiding relationships because of his mother's relationship failures. He doesn't think he and Luke could work because no relationships work, and he doesn't want to wreck their friendship which is the most important thing to him. But he needs him, can't give him up.

Anyone who knows me, knows that novelas really aren't my jam, but the premise of this one sucked me in. There were a couple things that were cheesy choices for advancing the plot. And the author annoyed me by describing the characters' pants as gray sweatpants multiple times in the characters internal monologues. That annoyed me because she was clearly doing it just for the readers to fangirl over and it was just unnatural because people internally think "pants" not "gray sweatpants". But overall this was really good for a novella, there was a lot of caring, sexual chemistry, and some plot that were squeezed in to the pages. Spencer and Luke were pretty steamy and adorable together. I liked the end too, I liked that they didn't throw out the word I love you, even though you could tell they were feeling it. It was more believable that they would use words other than I love you given how they hadn't been hooking up for long and they are college boys who aren't really experienced with emotion. If you want a light steamy read, this hits the spot.

Some notable moments:

"Something dark in me loves it when he gets so flustered he can’t speak, his hands balled into fists and face screwed up in irritation. Riling him up is the best part of my day. I like being the only one who can cut through his uptight veneer."

"He mouths my ear, hot breath warming my skin. “I can’t stop thinking about your face when you came.” “Is this still part of the bet?” “If you want it to be.” Whatever I felt before washes away like a baptism. I clutch Spencer’s arms and will myself not to explode. “I think I want it to be,” I say. Then I shove our lips together and kiss him like a man starving."

"“Fuck.” “What?” Junseo groans. “I owe Ryan twenty bucks.” “You guys bet on us?”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

This was such a sweet novella (with a bit of spice).

In just about 100 pages you get two roommates who are also best friends, pining after each other, despite one of them, Luke, supposedly is straight. It's quite fast-paced, but that's expected from a novella, in my opinion. There isn't much of a backstory to our two MCs, Spencer and Luke, but it wasn't something I was missing.

It's a perfect palate cleanser if you need something fast and sweet. It's crazy how much I highlighted from just 100 pages, but all the "awww" moments were just plenty, and I loved it. Spencer and Luke were absolutely adorable.

Also, I think this is my first soccer (football) romance, and I enjoyed that a lot. Of course it's my favorite sport, being European and all.

Main Characters or The Dream Team:

If you like a hot little read with lots of flirting, blushing, “is it hot in here?”, cute baking moments, romantic beach trips, and best friends who like each other but are mostly oblivious or just in denial, this adorable, sweet, and spicy novella is perfect for getting over a slump or for a quick, sweet read.

"Luke: The hand cupping my face snakes around the back of my head, fingers scraping my nape. Spencer kisses my jaw again, his stubble catching freshly-shaved skin, and my stomach flips. I’m already harder than I’ve ever been in my life, my cock straining against my zipper.
Biting back a moan, I push his shoulder. “I don’t remember this in the bet.”
“Sorry,” he says, not sounding sorry at all. “Just wanted to taste you.”
My brain short-circuits. Who says things like that? Maybe he’s trying to scare me into backing out. I lick my lips. Except I’ve never wanted to complete a bet more in my life. Before I can snipe something back at him, he tugs me closer until his breath ghosts over my lips. “Relax, Luke,” he says. Then he kisses me. "

Side Characters: 4/5

I love that the team was super supportive of the MCs being together and noticed that they only had eyes for each other before the MCs did.

Junseo Lee was one of the SCs who helped the MCs and was a great friend to both I would love to know more about him.
Also, Ryan, with the little hints the author provided, made me very intrigued. He seems like a very funny character, and I’d love to know more about him as well.
I would definitely read those books.

⚽🍫⚽🍫⚽🍫⚽🍫⚽Q🍫uo🍫te🍫⚽🍫 ⚽🍫 ⚽🍫 ⚽🍫

"Luke: Junseo corners me when I’m drying my hair from the shower. The locker room is almost empty, but Spencer’s presence is a monolith, taking up most of the room as usual.
“What’s up with Spencer?” Junseo says, leaning against the locker next to mine.
“Why is everyone asking me that?”
It’s annoying. I’m not his keeper. If he wants to throw a hissy fit at every passing glance, it’s none of my business. I scowl and towel my hair faster.
“You’re practically attached at the hip when you’re not fighting like an old married couple.”
“That’s—what? We’re just friends. Nothing else.”
“Didn’t say you weren’t.” He laughs and claps my back. “You can relax, dude. I just figured you’d know why he’s been so uptight today.”
“Well, I don’t. You’ll have to ask him about it yourself.”
“Ask who about what?”
Spencer stands behind us, arms crossed over his bare chest. Is this guy allergic to shirts or something? He’s staring at Junseo’s hand, still attached to my shoulder. His jaw twitches.
Junseo snorts and steps back, hands up like he’s facing a feral animal. “I was just leaving.”
He’s gone before I can tell him to stay, dragging the rest of the stragglers with him until it’s just me and Spencer in the middle of the room.
“Do you have to be like that?” I say, crossing my arms.
“You’re ignoring me."

Ugghh I loved Spencer and Luke the most! Bi-awakenings are truly my jam and I love it even more when the one having the awakening doesn’t have a freak out they just go with what they feel 😇 I think this book being a little longer helped flesh out the story a little bit more and that’s what I feel was missing for the first 2 books in the series (even though I still loved them).

I can’t leave this review without talking about the smut bc damnnn Sierra Bennett knows how to write some filthy scenes and they were sooo good 🤤 Spencer and Luke were so cute and I would’ve read a 400 page book about them ❤️

***ARC Review***

This is my honest and voluntary review for the ARC I received.

Spencer and Luke are roommates and best friends in college that have known each other for three years. They are also teammates on the college soccer field. Spencer is bisexual. Luke has always thought of himself as straight. Their first encounter has them somewhat out of sorts, but they grow quite close over the years. They push each other’s buttons and they never back down from a bet.

Once Spencer suggests a kiss as a bet, things change for the best friends. Both MCs try to fight it or write it off as a byproduct of the bet, but it’s really evident how much they care for and want one another. I like the subtle changes in their relationship during this novella. Their progression from best friends to friends with benefits to more is natural and sweet. Spencer’s anger is calmed by Luke’s presence and Luke’s tendency to be hard on himself is soothed by Spencer in turn. Bennett writes them in a way that makes it obvious how well suited they are for one another.

This novella is pretty low angst. It’s a lovely read. There are a couple of hiccups for the pair, but they manage to defeat them and score the winning goal, both on and off the field. If you like sweet college sports romances, this is the novella for you!

This was a sweet and steamy novella. Luke and Spencer were clearly already pretty obsessed with each other from the start, and the whole « bet » situation only made it clearer. I enjoy the pace and how they kept finding each other.

This was a cute short novella. Unfortunately I found it hard to connect with the MCs and didn't really feel like I was rooting for them to get together. Neither of them seemed to know what they wanted and the best friends to lovers trope didn't really shine through for me. On the plus side though, the spice was good and I'm sure many other people would enjoy this novella as a sweet palette cleanser between heavier/longer books.

This was so cute and really packed the heat.

I love a good besties to lovers trope and this was such a fun take on it. Both MCs play for the same soccer team and are basically the dream team. That is until their relationship starts to get in the way of that.

Watching them grow and figure out their feelings was hard because it’s very much a “you guys are already dating” vibe. But they figured it out in the end. 🥹

The moment with the cleats? Perfection 🖤

Crossed lines by Sierra Bennett was a great novella. Luke and Spencer are best friends that live together, play soccer together and push each other competitively, but are always there for each other when it counts. I love these two they complement each other in so many ways. their relationship begins to change into something more and the book is about how they navigate that. It’s sweet, sexy, romantic, and downright fire. I totally recommend this book. I hope you enjoy Luke and Spencer as much as I did.

Crossed Lines is an MM best friends and teammates to lovers story.
Luke and Spencer challenges each others with bets all the time. However this time their bet changes their life and relationship.

I loved Luke and Spencer’s relationship. The way they acted like a couple, their little touches that linger just a bit longer, Spencer kissing Luke’s forehead and cheeks. They all just made me melt.

I also love Sierra’s writing, the way she creates the warm, cozy feelings in this story. It is like a blanket you want to cocoon in and never leave

Thank you to Sierra Bennett for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC. I’m leaving my honest review voluntarily.

honestly, this book wasn’t necessarily bad… i just think it would’ve been better as a full length novel. even for novella standards, it felt underwhelming and unsatisfying. it was difficult for me to get attached to either spencer or luke and get properly invested in their relationship when they felt like such flat and underdeveloped characters. on top of that, the storyline (that’s a generous framing of it) felt almost nonexistent due to the constant repetitive conflict that seemed to resolve itself far too quickly for my tastes for how dragged out it seemed.

This was adorable! The perfect amount of sweet & spice. This 102 page mm romance was so adorable! Luke and Spencer are best friends and roommates who love to rile each other up while dating each other to be a little naughty.

What starts as a dare turns into friends with benefits which quickly becomes “more than friends”

Mildly spicy with so many really sweet moments as these two work on their relationship while maintain a friendship and enduring their rigorous sports schedule! I loved this and can’t wait to read more from @authorsierrabennett @gay.romance.reviews

This was a fun novella featuring (clueless) best friends and teammates to lovers. Bets and playing chicken are what eventually bring our guys together.

“Kiss me.” He pauses. “What?” “I bet kissing you won’t change my life. Not like you think it will.”

I love sports stories and this did include some soccer scenes. Even with being as short as it is, it managed to pack some plot in with the spice. It is very short though, so things move quickly. The ending is more HFN and satisfying. A perfect palate cleanser between angstier reads.

This is the first story I have read by this author but this was a fun and sweet low angst novella. Best friends Spencer and Luke live together and play together on the same soccer team. Compared to the first two books this one was my favorite. Seeing Luke’s and Spencer’s friendship bloom and seeing some stuff of there backgrounds made it so much better. For a novella the story was really good and not too fast paced. I love finding new authors and this is one of them.

Continuing on a TBR/Beat-The-Backlog kick (and ignoring my ARCs kick). Here's "Crossed Lines" by Sierra Bennett. It's the third novella in her Close Quarters series. Now sure when I read the first one, but GoodReads says I did so...

["Spencer Hall is everything I shouldn’t want—star soccer captain, my roommate, and my best friend.

The more we cross the line between friends, the less I want to stop."]

Idiots. Idiots who kiss and fuck and dare each other into more and more and more instead of thinking through (let alone talking through) their feelings. They’ve been half in love with each other for years, only falling more and more, but the individual insecurities keep them from understanding what they truly feel. And when these bets and these kisses start, it’s feel oh so natural (and looks oh so fucking adorable)c you wonder what took them so long (idiots).

Trigger Warnings: internalized homophobia, past death of a parent, mention of past abuse, and more.

Betting on Luke and Spencer . . .

Friends and roommates for the past 3 years, Luke Howard and Spencer Hall, finally get their story here. They are soccer players who are about to find their feelings for each other changing. The two of them love making bets, a simple way to stay competitive, and seem to enjoy relentlessly annoying each other. The latest irritation has resulted in Luke uncomfortably sitting on the kitchen floor while cleaning Spencer’s filthy cleats. Spencer, an awesome video game player, had pretended to be unfamiliar with a particular game. Then he bet Luke that he could play it with his eyes closed and still beat Luke. It sounded like a sure win for Luke, except Spencer was an ace at this one and actually could win with his eyes closed! Laughing at Luke’s current misery added to Spencer’s already smug attitude. Luke threw the dirty cleaning rag at Spencer’s head, but he easily reached out and grabbed it out of the air… adding an even bigger grin to mock Luke. The entire time, Spencer has been shirtless, because constantly flirting and teasing the straight guy is endless “fun” for him. So it’s no surprise when things change after another bet -- this one involving Spencer’s offer to show Luke how to kiss a girl “the right way” -- becomes more than they expected and shows them both how they really feel. With Luke focused on the Collegiate Summer Soccer Championship finals, he can’t allow himself to become distracted. But Spencer never gives up once he sets a goal for himself. Will Luke have to choose between his dream of winning that Championship or the man who is winning his heart?

This is a very short & fast read but it was still worth reading. You don't have a backstory for both of the MC's however I didn't really need it.

Luke has always consider himself straight. He has his best friend Spencer and they are both on the soccer team. He is doing his hardest to make sure he does really well in soccer to make his dad proud but also for himself. Him and Spencer have always been competitive and making bets however when Spencer suggests a bet that Luke never thought possible, he still takes him up on it. Luke doesn't know why his heart always races for Spencer or why he really wanted the kiss from him but he does.

Spencer has always like Luke since they met. He figured he could flirt or make bets with him just to try to see what would happen. He never thought Luke would go through with it. He can't help himself and keeps wanting more. He loves playing soccer with Luke and will always continue to play by his side. They both enjoy the sport. When he offers Luke a bet and he takes it, he can't help but want to continue and do more but he plays it off as he doesn't know what Luke wants.

Luke & Spencer have to communicate and talk about things. When they finally speak up, they both realize that they should have spoken sooner. The connection between the two just gets stronger and they can't help but stay close together.

Such a really good story and some really spicy and steamy scenes. These two were made for each other.

I received an ARC through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

Spencer is the captain of the team, and with that comes confidence in spades. He is everything that Luke shouldn’t be interested in, especially since he is a guy. That didn’t seem to stop anything because Luke was as close to him as a straight guy could get. They were best friends on and off the pitch. What Luke doesn’t know is that his friend has lusted for him since the very beginning. Making a bet that kissing wouldn’t change anything ended up changing everything.

OPINION: This is a sweet love story of two best friends realizing that they had slipped into a little bit more. Sexuality is open. No big awakening story. Luke simply accepts that he likes being with Spencer and nobody cares, not even him. This can fall into the erotica category because there are a lot of spicy moments, which I loved. It's such a nice, easy read with some great guys who just need to take a moment to think and realize it's okay to love and being in love with your best friend can be amazing. Even though this is novella length, you get to know the MCs. It's a little bit of a grumpy sunshine vibe, but generally, they are just two men falling for each other. Quick afternoon read with so much spice; read it as an afternoon delight.

Crossed Lines by Sierra Bennett is a fantastic novella that packs a punch. Luke and Spencer, best friends and roommates, have an undeniable bond that extends beyond just living together—they also play soccer side by side and constantly push each other to be their best, both on and off the field. Their friendship is the foundation of their connection, and it's a joy to see how they always have each other's backs when it truly matters.

As their relationship begins to shift into something more, the story beautifully explores the challenges and emotions they face while navigating these new feelings. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the transition from best friends to something deeper feels natural, heartfelt, and intense.

The book is sweet, sexy, and full of romantic tension, with plenty of steamy moments that make it impossible to put down. Luke and Spencer complement each other in every way, and their journey from friendship to love is filled with passion and tenderness. If you enjoy stories that combine romance with deep emotional bonds and sizzling chemistry, Crossed Lines is a must-read. I would have loved it if it was longer to get more of the relationship development but I can't recommend it enough and hope you fall in love with Luke and Spencer just as much as I did!

Crossed Lines by Sierra Bennett is a delightful, fast-paced MM college romance that pulls you right in with its charm and intensity. Luke and Spencer’s story is one of competitive friendship that slowly blurs the line into something more. Luke, who’s always been focused on soccer and making his dad proud, is caught off guard by the undeniable chemistry with his best friend and roommate, Spencer. The dynamic between the two is electric—full of teasing, harmless bets, and playful tension. When a bet leads to an unexpected kiss, the emotional rollercoaster kicks off. The dual POV lets readers experience the uncertainty and thrill of their evolving feelings firsthand. There’s a sweetness to their connection, with moments of baking together and affectionate banter that add warmth to the story. Yet, the novella doesn’t shy away from exploring the raw intensity of their attraction either, with plenty of explicit and steamy scenes. With a balance of humor, heat, and heart, Crossed Lines is a super sweet, captivating read that perfectly captures the friends-to-lovers dynamic. A must-read for fans of college romances!.

When bets between besties lead to something zesty

“I hate you,” I say.

“Say it again,” he says, low and rumbling. “This time like you mean it.”

Love Love Loved this book!!

Oh my goodness, this book was everything. From the moment I started reading I was hooked. The feelings both these MCs have for each other translated into bickering and banter was topnotch. Even I felt the tension between these two.

Spencer, my big flirt, is hot. Like I don't even understand how hotly portrayed he was. From the looks to the bets, this man had me hot and bothered.

Luke, my competitive confused cutie, is so attuned to Spencer. The way the author had portrayed the obsession these two had for each other was emmaculant.

I don't remember having this much fun reading a book that felt like it had been made solely for me. It had everything I loved all wrapped in one.

If you love books that feature a "straight" boy blushing around their best friend, size difference, bets between dudes taken too far, hand necklaces, close proximity with a dash of heat all wrapped up in a short read, this book is for you.
