DNF. I stumbled upon this book during a Kobo sale and was immediately intrigued by the synopsis, so I knew I wanted to read it early in the year between some of my other planned reads. Unfortunately, this was a disappointing read for me and resulted in a DNF (did not finish).

I debated on pushing through and reading the book outright; however, once I got to 35% and realized I wasn’t invested, I skimmed my way to the 45% mark and finally decided it wasn’t worth continuing.
_________________

PROS. Here are some of the things I appreciated:

✔️ Some of the imagery and scenery descriptions were beautifully written—my mind practically melted while reading some of these sentences. I almost always knew what the landscape looked like and had no trouble picturing the setting in my mind. Loved this!

✔️ There is action right from page 1, which I appreciated. It pulled me in and made me want to know more. I just wish the pacing and progression had stayed strong enough to keep me fully engaged.
_________________

HESITATIONS. I'm not calling them "cons" because that sounds so negative. That said, I do want to be honest—especially since there were quite a few 5-star reviews that influenced my decision to pick this up. This is simply my experience of what I read:

▶︎ There was so much repetitive language, recycled phrasing, and repeated word use, even within the same page. For example:
"The weight of her decision pressed down on her like a stone, but she bought it with the strength of a captain, who had faced countless battles and had always come out stronger on the other side."

And then 2 short paragraphs later:
"...the weight of her mission pressed down on her like a heavy burden, but she bore it with the strength of a captain who had faced campus battles and had always come out stronger on the other side."

Other recurring examples include phrases like, "The crew moved with purpose," and, "the weight of [power, responsibility, etc.] pressing down on her..."

Unfortunately, these repeats pulled me out of the story. I felt unnecessarily reminded of scenery we had just seen, emotions we had just been told about, or that "this was only the beginning."

▶︎ Editing errors. This ties into the previous point, but there were also a few issues with tense shifts, as well as contradictory character descriptions. For example, Astrid’s hair is described as “fiery red”, then a few pages later it’s “short-cropped blonde hair", and then a few chapters later it’s “auburn hair" again. It was likely just an oversight, but I can already tell you more about Astrid's appearance(s) than I can the FMC.

▶︎ Little context, and underdeveloped characters. At almost 50%, I'd like to know a bit more about the characters and why they're on the journey they are. Other than Selene's father dying, we know little about who she is beyond being the captain of The Tempest. I wasn't invested in her as a character, which made it harder to continue reading.

There were also missed opportunities for impactful scenes. After a long buildup to a confrontation with the Siren Queen, the entire interaction is anticlimactic and lasts about four pages from start to finish. This would have been a perfect opportunity for a high-stakes, action-heavy moment to showcase a badass FMC.
_________________

CONCLUSION. I don't think it's a bad book—I just don't think it was the right book for me. These "hesitations" I mentioned were issues I kept stumbling over repeatedly, ultimately impacting my reading experience enough that I couldn't overlook them or get invested in what was left of the story.

The Cursed Sea is a riveting fantasy novel that captivates readers with its intricate world-building, compelling characters, and a plot that's as deep and unpredictable as the ocean itself. Authored by an imaginative and skilled storyteller, this book takes us on a thrilling adventure across treacherous waters, cursed territories, and the dark underbelly of magical societies.

At the heart of the story is Captain Selene Greystorm, a character who embodies resilience, intelligence, and complexity. Her quest for revenge against the notorious pirate Darian Thorne evolves into an unexpected alliance, showcasing her ability to adapt and navigate the murky waters of trust and betrayal. Darian Thorne, on the other hand, emerges as a character with depth, revealing layers of remorse and redemption that challenge both Selene’s and the reader's perceptions.

The novel's antagonists, the Siren Queen Thalassa and the Red Hand led by the Scorpion, are formidable and well-crafted. Thalassa's menacing presence and ancient magic add a sense of impending doom, while the Scorpion's cunning and ruthless strategies keep the protagonists—and readers—on their toes. The use of forbidden sorcery and the consequential imbalance it brings to the world is a compelling narrative thread that explores the themes of power, corruption, and environmental catastrophe.

One of the book's strengths is its richly detailed setting. The author skillfully paints a world where the boundaries between land and sea blur, creating a setting that is both beautiful and threatening. The description of cursed territories, where magic and monsters lurk, is particularly vivid and engaging, adding to the overall suspense and sense of danger.

The plot is well-paced, with twists and turns that maintain suspense and keep the reader engaged. The alliance between Selene and Darian, their ventures into cursed territories, and their battles against the forces of the Red Hand and Thalassa are filled with action, intrigue, and emotional depth. The novel also delves into themes of trust, loyalty, and the cost of vengeance, making the characters' internal struggles as compelling as their external conflicts.

In conclusion, The Cursed Sea is a captivating fantasy novel that offers a mix of adventure, magic, and emotional depth. Its well-crafted plot, complex characters, and richly detailed world make it a must-read for fans of the genre. Despite some minor flaws, the book is a testament to the power of storytelling and imagination.

"The Cursed Sea" by Laurie Bowler is nothing short of a masterpiece, deserving a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. This brilliant and flawlessly written pirate adventure weaves elements of romance and dark fantasy into a narrative that is both captivating and exceptionally crafted. Laurie Bowler's skill in world-building is on full display, creating a setting so vivid and immersive that the reader can almost feel the salt spray on their face and hear the creak of the ship beneath their feet.

The story plunges us into a world where the sea holds many secrets, among them the deadly Siren Queen Thalassa and the nefarious Red Hand, a shadowy criminal network. At the heart of this tumultuous sea is Captain Selene Greystorm, a character whose determination and cunning make her a compelling protagonist. Her journey of survival, which involves forging dangerous alliances, is gripping. After years of seeking vengeance against the pirate Darian Thorne, Selene finds herself in an uneasy alliance with him against a common foe, setting the stage for a tale of epic proportions.

As the Siren Queen's power grows and ancient magic stirs the ocean into a frenzy, the Red Hand, under the guidance of the ruthless strategist known as the Scorpion, poses a threat not only to the pirate world but to the very balance between land and sea. Their employment of forbidden sorcery adds a layer of urgency and danger to Selene and Darian's quest. The narrative expertly navigates through cursed territories, encounters with monstrous beings, and the ever-looming shadow of betrayal and deception.

What makes "The Cursed Sea" stand out is not just its thrilling plot or the meticulously designed world but its exploration of complex themes such as trust, revenge, and the possibility of redemption. Selene's eventual realization that she may have to trust her greatest enemy to save what she holds dear is both poignant and thought-provoking.

In summary, Laurie Bowler's "The Cursed Sea" is a testament to the power of storytelling, combining action, romance, and fantasy in a way that is both unique and deeply satisfying. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good adventure, complex characters, and a story that stays with you long after the last page is turned.

OMG, where do I even start?! 😱 So, I just finished reading this book that literally had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's all about the sea, magic, and like, the most intense battles between good and evil you can imagine. And let me tell you, it's a wild ride!

First off, the Siren Queen Thalassa and this creepy group called the Red Hand are like the ultimate baddies. They're so wicked and powerful, it's insane. But then there's Captain Selene Greystorm, who's this total badass. She's out there making risky moves and teaming up with her enemy, Darian Thorne, which is so unexpected but totally cool. They’re like this dynamic duo fighting against all odds.

What I absolutely loved about the book is how it's not just about the fights and the magic (which are epic, by the way), but it's also super deep. Like, it makes you think about trust, betrayal, and making super hard choices. And the whole setting with cursed territories and monsters is just so vivid. I felt like I was right there with Selene and Darian, trying to save the world.

The part about the Scorpion, the mastermind behind the Red Hand, was so gripping. The whole mystery and danger vibe was off the charts. It's like, you never know what's going to happen next or who's going to backstab who.

Honestly, I couldn’t put it down. I was rooting for Selene the whole time, hoping she’d make the right choices and not lose everything dear to her. The suspense was real!

If you're into stories with fierce battles, magical intrigue, and complex relationships, you have to check this out. It's a total rollercoaster, and I’m here for it. Can't wait to talk about it with my friends and see what they think. Def one of my top reads this year! 🌊✨📚

The Cursed Sea is one wild ride from start to finish! It’s got everything epic battles, dark magic, betrayals, and some seriously intense characters that you can’t help but love (or fear). Selene Greystorm is the kind of heroine I absolutely root for fierce, smart, and willing to do whatever it takes to survive. She’s not just a warrior; she’s strategic and emotionally complex, making her journey feel real and gripping. Her alliance with Darian Thorne? Completely unexpected, but SO good. I love a reluctant partnership, especially when both characters have to figure out if they can really trust each other.

And the villains? Absolutely chilling. The Siren Queen Thalassa’s presence looms over the story like an inescapable storm her magic is ancient, powerful, and deeply unsettling. Then there’s the Scorpion and the Red Hand, who bring a whole different kind of danger with their ruthless, cunning strategies. There’s never a moment where you feel safe in this book, and I loved that constant tension.

The world-building is insane cursed territories, haunted seas, and magic that feels both beautiful and dangerous. I could picture every eerie, mist-covered island and every dark, churning wave. The action is fast-paced, but there’s also so much depth to the themes trust, betrayal, the cost of vengeance it all makes you think while keeping you entertained. Every twist had me hooked, and I didn’t want it to end. If you love adventure packed fantasy with deep characters and high stakes, this one’s a must-read!

The Cursed Sea is everything I look for in a fantasy novel action-packed, emotionally gripping, and set in a world so rich and immersive that I felt like I was sailing through its treacherous waters myself.

At the center of it all is Captain Selene Greystorm, a fierce, intelligent, and incredibly complex protagonist whose quest for vengeance takes unexpected turns. Her uneasy alliance with the infamous pirate Darian Thorne adds layers of tension, trust issues, and redemption, making their dynamic one of the highlights of the book. And let’s not forget the villains—the Siren Queen Thalassa and the ruthless Red Hand, both of whom are as menacing as they are fascinating. The stakes feel real and high, with forbidden sorcery and ancient curses threatening to tip the balance of power.

One of my favorite things about this book is its world-building. The way the author describes the cursed territories, the unpredictable magic, and the eerie beauty of the sea completely transported me into this world. It’s the kind of setting that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

If you love fast-paced fantasy with pirates, magical creatures, intense battles, and deep emotional conflicts, this book needs to be on your shelf. It’s a thrilling adventure with just the right amount of twists, making it nearly impossible to put down.

Selene Greystorm is a fierce and compelling protagonist, torn between revenge and survival. Her reluctant alliance with Darian Thorne makes for some seriously intense moments, and the villains? Absolutely terrifying. From the sinister Siren Queen to the ruthless Red Hand, every encounter had me holding my breath.

The world-building is phenomenal, the action is non-stop, and the story is packed with magic, betrayal, and adventure. If you love pirates, supernatural threats, and high-stakes fantasy, this book needs to be on your radar. You won’t regret it.

This story completely blew me away. I went into it expecting an exciting fantasy adventure, but what I got was so much deeper. Yes, the action is heart-pounding, and the magic is powerful and unpredictable, but at its core, this book is about trust, sacrifice, and the weight of impossible choices.

Captain Selene Greystorm is a fascinating protagonist—strong-willed and fearless, yet flawed in a way that makes her feel so real. The reluctant alliance between her and Darian Thorne added so much depth to the story, forcing them both to question their pasts, their loyalties, and even themselves. The villains, especially the Siren Queen Thalassa and the Red Hand, are genuinely terrifying, and the mystery of the Scorpion kept me guessing until the very end.

What really stood out to me was the world-building—the cursed territories, monstrous creatures, and eerie atmosphere made the setting feel alive and unpredictable. This book isn’t just about battles and magic; it’s about the cost of fighting for what you believe in. It’s gripping, emotional, and impossible to put down. Highly, highly recommend!

The characters? Brilliantly written. Each one feels real and complex, with their own motivations and struggles. Their journeys are gripping, and you find yourself deeply invested in what happens to them. The plot is fast-paced, full of unexpected twists, and keeps you on edge the entire time. There’s magic, monsters, danger, death, and political intrigue, all masterfully woven together to create an unforgettable adventure.

If you love fantasy adventures with pirates, dark magic, and morally complex characters, then The Cursed Sea is the book for you.

The world-building is incredible. The cursed territories are beautifully eerie, and the way magic is used in the story makes everything feel high-stakes and unpredictable. The villains are genuinely terrifying, especially the Siren Queen and the Red Hand, whose sinister presence kept me on edge.

Selene Greystorm is a total badass, determined to avenge her past but smart enough to know that sometimes, enemies can become allies. Enter Darian Thorne—the pirate she’s spent years hating, but who might just be the key to survival. Their partnership is full of tension, mistrust, and unexpected chemistry, making their interactions so much fun to read.

This book is a wild ride, filled with twists, betrayals, and epic sea battles. If you’re a fan of high-seas adventures with a dark, magical twist, you’re going to love this one

Captain Selene Greystorm is out for revenge, but her plans take a wild turn when she’s forced into an uneasy alliance with Darian Thorne, the very pirate she despises. Their tense, clash-filled partnership is one of the most exciting parts of the book—filled with distrust, unexpected moments of understanding, and some serious power struggles. Add in the menacing Siren Queen Thalassa and the mysterious leader of The Red Hand, and you’ve got a non-stop adventure across cursed seas where nothing is as it seems.

The story blends fantasy, mythology, and suspense effortlessly, making you feel like you’re right there, sailing through dangerous waters. Even the side characters have a strong presence, adding depth and intrigue to the plot. The pacing is perfect, keeping you hooked until the very last page.

If you’re a fan of revenge-driven plots, unpredictable twists, and pirate fantasy at its finest, you don’t want to miss this one!

The Cursed Sea is an intense and immersive fantasy that completely pulled me in from the start. It’s got everything—epic battles, mythical creatures, secret identities, and a deadly game of power and survival.

The world-building is stunning—the cursed sea, magical forces, and dangerous factions make everything feel alive and unpredictable. The story also does a great job of exploring themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the cost of revenge, making it more than just a typical fantasy adventure.

Selene Greystorm is on a quest for vengeance, but when she’s forced to work with her biggest enemy, Darian Thorne, the story takes an exciting turn. Their dynamic is full of tension, shifting from outright hostility to a reluctant alliance as they try to stop the impending disaster caused by Thalassa, the Siren Queen, and The Red Hand’s mysterious leader, Scorpion. Their uneasy trust adds real emotional weight to the action-packed adventure.

This is a pre-ordered book I wanted to have after reading Laurie Bowler's The War at Sea. I love the whole sea adventure fantasy stories; this one really blew my socks off! From start to finish, the plot captivated me with all the different fantastical and nautical elements that are brilliantly written into the story; the characters are witty and wonderful, and even the side characters have a significant part in the plot. I can honestly say this is even better than The War at Sea and is a true pirate adventure that you don't want to miss out on reading. With threats from Thalassa, the Siren Queen rising, and The Red Hand run by Scorpion, who nobody knows who he/she is until much later, added a lot of mystery and suspense—a great, fantastic pirate adventure across a very dangerous cursed sea.

Such a unique type of plot. It is a super exciting mix of high-seas adventure and ancient magic. The story follows Captain Selene Greystorm and pirate Darian Thorne as they form an unexpected team to stop the evil Queen and the dangerous Red Hand group. Who are causing a lot of chaos. The book has a lot of tension, deep character moments, and plenty of action scenes. It’s set in a world where myths come to life, which makes it even more intriguing.

Selene and Darian's journey is full of danger & betrayal. They prepare for a mission that can prevent a major power shift that could destroy everything. The combination of fantasy, adventure, and mythology, the book is about making tough choices, staying strong, and fighting the darkness. If you’re into fantasy and adventure, you will like it.

Whoa, this book was insane! From start to finish, it had me completely hooked. The action never stops, and the stakes just keep getting higher. Captain Selene Greystorm is an absolute force of nature brave, reckless, and completely captivating.

And the whole enemy-to-ally situation with Darian Thorne? That had me on edge the entire time. The villains are seriously terrifying, especially the Siren Queen Thalassa and the Red Hand. Every time I thought I had things figured out, the book threw another wild twist my way. The world-building is so vivid that I felt like I was right there in the cursed seas, facing down monsters and impossible odds.

If you love high-stakes fantasy with unforgettable characters, crazy plot twists, and breathtaking battles, you need this book in your life. Easily one of my favorite reads of the year!

I am one of Laurie Bowler's biggest fans, so I had to buy a pre-order copy of her new book, The Cursed Sea. I have never enjoyed a book more than I have this one. Selene is a brilliant, smart, mouthed character who has to join forces with someone she really doesn't like. They then sail across the seas together, fighting all sorts of mythical creatures and magical effects from dark magic. The plot is so well done, and it's actually one of those books you would read again (which I am doing, by the way). The characters are great, and the plot keeps you on your toes; when you think the plot's climax is finished, you couldn't be more wrong. This is definitely a must-read for anyone who loves adventures across the seas, fantasy, romance and strong, determined female lead characters.

Great revenge-drama! Captain Selene Greystorm wants her revenge, but things take a wild turn when she has to team up with her biggest enemy, Darian Thorne, to stop a disaster that could destroy everything.

The tension between Selene and Darian was really intriguing. They don’t trust each other, but they have no choice but to work together. Their uneasy alliance is full of clashes and rare moments of understanding. It made their journey very exciting & also the battles they fought.

The story does a great job of showing how fragile trust can be, which adds real depth to all the action. The book moves fast and keeps you entertained. Towards the end, the book got even more exciting and interesting. To sum up, it’s a gripping read that kept me on edge until the very last word.

It's absolutely the best. The main character, Selene, is super smart and has such a fun way of speaking. She ends up teaming up with someone she's not too fond of, which is hilarious. Together, they go on this epic sea adventure, battling all these wild creatures and dealing with crazy magic. The story is so gripping! And guess what? I'm reading it again because it's that good. The characters are fantastic, and just when you think you know what's going to happen next, boom, another surprise! If you're into thrilling sea journeys, magical fantasies, a bit of romance, and kick-butt female heroes, this book is totally for you.

Selene is such a smart and entertaining main character, and her way of talking makes the story even more fun. She has to work with someone she cannot stand, which leads to some really funny moments. This book definitely needs an editor. There are numerous grammatical errors. It could easily be stretched out into a multiple book series. All the scenes are rushed through with very little details that made it easy to lose interest quickly. Within the first chapter of the book the description of one of the characters is changed dramatically. From red hair long enough to braid to short cropped blond hair in 12 pages. I'm sure this would be an amazing book if it was checked over properly. Couldn't even finish the book as it was frustrating to read.
