See The Depths

Rate this book
Finnegan Jarvis should be dead right now - drowned at the hands of the most vicious mermaid the landfolk have ever seen. He would be, if his girlfriend hadn't transformed him into a merfolk like herself. Now he's a fish, seeing the depths of the ocean, exploring the Seadom with Erie by his side. So why can't he stop thinking about the surface?

Being a superpredator isn't as magical as it initially seems. When Erie takes him hunting, the fish scream. When she tries to get physical, the alienness of his own body makes him pull away. And when the King finds out Finn's life has come at the price of Princess Clair's, Finn becomes a target not only of the King's wrath, but of nearly the entire Seadom.

Then the boats begin hunting Mer again. Finn realizes he has a choice to stay with Erie as a powerless Mer forever, or make the painful transformation back to human and stop them, losing her in the process.

Wow! I loved this sequel to Speak the Ocean. See the Depths continues shortly after the events that happened at the end of book 1. Finn is adjusting to his new life with Erie, but humans continue to be a threat to the Mer. From land, we see things from Jen's POV.

Rebecca Enzor's writing is wonderfully immersive. The descriptions of the Seadom were vivid and satisfyingly Mer. Revisiting the tanks Oceanica felt even darker this time around. The story was exciting with the conflict between the humans and Mer and seeing how Finn & Erie was tangled in the middle of everything. I really enjoyed reading it and look forward to the next one in the series.

The continuation of Erie and Finn is great in the sequel. Things a really heating up and maybe not in the way you think. More characters, more drama, and more hate for Corporate businesses.

Not going to lie, I am not a fan of Erie, and maybe that's the point right now, but I also see her growth and her reasoning for things that are happening. This is not in any way a slight on the book, just my opinion of the character. I thoroughly enjoy the overall story and who's to say you are going to like every character.

I do want more Niku in the next book! And beware there is a cliffhanger so be prepared for book 3!

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeply passionate book that takes you beyond a little mermaid type story. Now mind you, this is not a little mermaid retelling, it stands on it's own fin and has a powerful message beyond being a good story. Read it and find out and never humanize the mer!!

I received this as an ARC directly from the author. All views expressed are my own.

Recommend - For someone who wants a little more fight from their mermaids than Ariel.

This is the second book of a series. Reading the first is imperative before you read this. Please also note my review will contain spoilers for the first book, Speak the Ocean, although none for this book (Book 2).

Contemporary supernatural. FM low spice.

A Whole New World
Picking up basically exactly where Book 1 left off, Finn is plunged into the Seadom and therefore, so is the reader. In some ways, this is even more intriguing than StO because it elaborates on what we only saw hints of before Erie’s capture.

I loved the worldbuilding we saw, both in terms of societal structure/cultural practices, and to also get a hint about the other Seadoms around the world. Enzor’s exploration of what that could mean, and the impact the differing marine environments and temperatures might have on the Mer on a cultural and physiological basis was a joy to read more about.

Culture Shock
One of the things that I really appreciated about StO, and which has been continued here, is that the move into a different culture is not an easy one. Picking up language, learning what’s expected, trying food that you’re not used to, the list goes on. In this case, it was Finn needing to adjust to a whole slough of things like Erie had to in StO, just in reverse. And alongside that is the fact that Erie is a princess in her world and the complications that can result from that.

I loved how pragmatic Enzor was with this in StO and it felt like she actually doubled down on the practical aspects of this in Finn’s case.

Bad Decisions
I don’t know if I just glossed it over in StO, or if it was just exposing the privilege and naivete that Finn always had but wow, he made some shockingly bad calls in this book. To be clear, they sort of made sense but it really exposed how un-worldly he is in the grand scheme of things and really drove home the idea that hey, this guy’s actually still reasonably young and foolish.

Erie made some bad decisions, too, btw, they just didn’t seem to yield as many openly bad consequences as frequently as Finn’s did.

People Are Complicated
Okay, people are complicated, we know that. They have the thoughts and then they have the feelings and these things get all muddled and annoying and then society has all these expectations too and it’s all a mess. And it’s not that StO simplified this exactly (it didn’t), but it feels like in book 2, this got taken to the next level with more moving parts.

Which absolutely made for an incredible rollercoaster, and unexpected twists and turns but omg, my heart, I can’t take this kind of thing. And how on earth did I get so invested in these people in the first place??

In summary I definitely recommend this series to people who want their mermaids with a bit more oomph and who like their feelings thrown all over the shop. So basically most of you who have gotten this far. Go read it!

This New Adult urban fantasy carries on with all the trappings of paranormal YA drama and then some. Unapologetically off beat, we go from the world of above the waves to the oceans below, and wouldn't you know it? Being a Merfolk isn't exactly twee fairytale stuff.

I'm getting vibes of A Dark and Hollow Star on a small scale (think mythological beings acting like modern humans while they have to solve their hidden world's problems).

What I Loved:
- We carry on with the super complicated emotional ties. I wouldn't say there's a romance brewing, but maybe something more grounded. We have a previously emotionally unavailable guy who's trying to work out what his feelings mean, a Mer princess who's used to getting what she wants, and an old flame who isn't quite sure where she stands. It's not a vicious love triangle despite it's shape.
- The weird crossover of fantasy and YA life drama we witness with the Mer. Mean girls, annoying siblings and raves aren't just confined to land.
- It's entertaining following the fantastical plot twists and bad decisions made by Finn and his friends. It's not getting cerebral with the world building; it's fantasy for fun.
- Character growth, especially in Erie's case. After the events of book 1, she's certainly changed to reflect her circumstances.

What I Noticed:
- Pseudo monster romance things happen. Not my usual thing so, uh...
- Some of it really does push the boundaries of believability, but it references Doctor Who so your disbelief about fantasy, science, and human willingness to accept weirdness should really be suspended by now. I enjoyed it for the drama it is.
- Cliffhanger! This new twist could be a who load of fun.

TL;DR: Came for the mermaids, stayed for the YA-like fantasy drama. It's not deep, but it is fun if you're in the mood for an unusual paranormal/urban fantasy.

Rebecca Enzor's second instalment in the Speak The Ocean series, See The Depths, is a captivating continuation of Finn's journey as he grapples with his newfound identity as a Mer and tries to find his place in the enchanting yet unfamiliar realm of Seadom.

Picking up where the previous book left off, the story delves deeper into the aftermath of Eerie's harrowing experience at Oceanica and the heartbreaking loss of her sister, as she puts aside her own struggles to support Finn's transition into his new life beneath the waves.

Enzor's vivid, evocative prose paints a mesmerizing picture of this underwater world, immersing the reader in lush descriptions that bring every aspect of Seadom to life in exquisite detail. The rich, multi-faceted characters are a testament to Enzor's storytelling prowess, as they navigate complex relationships and personal challenges with authenticity and depth, drawing the reader in and eliciting a genuine emotional connection.

With each twist and turn of the gripping plot, See The Depths takes the reader on a thrilling journey that is both poignant and utterly absorbing, operating on multiple levels as it explores themes of identity, loss, and belonging.

Enzor's masterful worldbuilding shines through as she reveals new facets of life in Seadom, crafting a realm that feels at once fantastical and tangible, a testament to her boundless imagination and skill as a writer.

Poignant, thrilling, and utterly absorbing, See The Depths is a triumphant sequel that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the third book in this remarkable series.

I had really enjoyed the first book Speak The Ocean and was excited to read the next book in the series. It uses the mermaid element that I was hoping for and enjoyed getting back to this storyline. The characters felt like they were meant to be in this universe and thought the scifi and fairy tale elements worked well overall. Rebecca Enzor has that kind of style that I was wanting from a sequel and was glad I was able to read this.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. So here goes… this book is brilliant. The best sequel I’ve ever read. There’s so much drama and so many twists and turns and it’s BEAUTIFUL! If I could read about these characters for the rest of my life, I would. So I’ll just be patiently waiting for the next book, please and thank you!!! My first 5 star ARC review and it was definitely worth the wait

I think this is a good book. I loved all the descriptions of the Seadom and life as a Mer. There are a lot of heartbreaking moments and I can definitely see the change in Erie's personality after everything she went through in the first book. This one ends on a cliffhanger just like Speak the Ocean. It is well written and interesting. If you like urban fantasy this is definitely a good one.

I read the first book in this series (Speak the Ocean) and was fully drawn into the immersive world Enzor created. Her descriptions are lovely, and the characters with all their human (and Mer) failings were relatable and made me want to cheer them on.

See the Depths follows the story of Finn and Erie, continuing the great worldbuilding from the first book to get an even more in depth view of the Mer and their culture.

I rated this book four stars, whereas the first book I gave five stars, because it felt as though Finn didn't really learn his lesson/grow *enough* as a character from the first book to the second book, but I also give him a little more leeway as he IS very young in the grand scheme of things. I also wasn't a HUGE fan of the cliffhanger/turn of events at the very end of the book.

This book was amazing; I might have liked it even better than the first one. The humor worked very well, making me laugh, the writing was easy to read but also kept me engaged, and the characters were believable and relatable. The exhilarating action, coupled with the immersive world-building, drew me in completely. I am looking forward to the release of the third book.

Holy seafoam, what a ride! A phenomenal followup to the worldbuilding of book one. This was so good I binged it in a day.

Niku is still my favorite.

What a ride!!!
I loved it I couldn’t put it down and now I need the next book ASAP haha
It was really good, well written and entertaining, I didn’t mind guessing few things, it didn’t take away the pleasure of reading it. I really enjoyed the pace, how difficult it was for the characters to make a decision without being too annoying or repetitive, the complexity between sea world and land world, I like seeing more of the seadom and mermaids life.
Definitely recommend it

I so enjoyed See the Depths! Admittedly, while I enjoyed the first book in this series, Speak the Ocean, I found that this is where the series truly hit its stride. I was captivated by the imagery of the underwater world and various folk from across the oceans as well as the culture and customs introduced. The scenes of great change were my favorite and I enjoyed reading from several viewpoints. I look forward to the next installment in the series!
