This audiobook had me hooked from start to finish! The sheer intensity, devotion, raw emotion, and unwavering suspense kept my heart pounding throughout. The mix of action and mystery delivered the dark, twisted adventure I was promised, and it’s an experience I won’t soon forget(Also because of the cliffhanger).
I eagerly await the rest of the series!

I received an ARC of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Amalie has spent years training to avenge her moghers death and, once and for all, prove the existence of vampires to her uncle. Her quarry: Theo Vallon. Everything changes after she drives a stake through his heart.

I honestly am feeling very conflicted about this book.

First of all, I spent every other chapter of this story confused. It was a pleasant read that I found myself looking forward to, but still.

✦ Worldbuilding. The vampires in this story have a fairly specific and intruiging mythology. Unfortunately, it felt like some of the finer tenants of vampirism were unclear? Wishy washy? The coagulation was a neat concept but the way it was explained and the timeline for the victims (Penolope) felt so incongruous. It just didn't make sense.

✦ Characters. Not gonna lie. I like neither Amelie nor Theo. The characters felt somewhat singular in their motives, without much depth. Aside from that they both seemed fairly juvenile. It's understandable for Amalie, but unbefitting of a man Theo's age. The entire coven aside from Ren felt superfluous and unnecessary. The romance between the two main characters was there, but mostly vague.

✦ Plot. So much more could have been done with this. Honestly much of the dialogue was internal and cyclic. The premise was there. The writing style was there. But the plot… it felt almost as if the writer was very forcefully besting around the bush when it came to any and all relevant information. Things were written in the way that even if a character supposedly had a revelation, or an important tidbit was revealed, we as readers were not privy to that information. I understand wanting to build suspense but a mystery does require breadcrumbs to follow. It was all just very unnatural.

All in all. I am unsatisfied. I want to know more but honestly didn't even follow the first few pages of this book. I look forward to the next in the series if only to receive some clarification.

Give the book at try. Maybe it's to your liking, maybe it's not. Hoping to see better in the next book.

Arc read; In this case I got the book from Booksirens. No special requests other than my honest opinion, and that’s what you gonna get. ✨️

I enjoyed reading this book, and it left me with a curiosity high enough to jump into book two. I really want to know where the story will take us!
I loved the plot and the worldbuilding!

The book contains;

◇ Enemies to lovers
◇ Multiple timelines
◇ Slowburn
◇ Dark gothic/Fantasy

The story bounce between present and past, which at the beginning was a bit confusing, but quite quickly turned out to be a great and important thing to the story.

It really is an interesting take on vampires, and the lore was so engaging, about the vampires and guardians.
The MMC and the FMC are interesting characters and it’s easy to feel for them. Their chemistry is perfect and all we want from a grumpy mfc and rainbow fmc.

Although, I have to say that I’m missing something in their story. There’s a lot that’s not explained to the reader and it feels like the plot ain't moving forward as well as the story deserves it. Which is why my rating for this book is 2,5 ☆.

I liked it. And I want to continue reading to see where it takes us, especially since it’s ending with a cliffhanger.

We get some unraveled secrets and clarity, but it’s missing a lot of "show the reader". Some things felt like the characters just knew or figured out, and only left me confused.

But overall it’s a great story. The author has a really great storyline and a wonderful take on vampires, which I loved!

I would recommend this book for those who enjoy dark gothic and fantasybooks!

I really didn't think that this book was going to be so emotional. Like. THE FEELS.

I felt so deeply for Theo that I actually don't know if I can read the next coming book(s). His anguish and pain was captured very well IMO.

Amalie, on the other hand, tends to make some readers unhappy it would seem. When you sit back and think about it, she's actually also written pretty well. Her trauma, upbringing, and goals are so important to her that I think, given the opportunity, we would probably act very similarly in her position. Consider this: You hate vampires (enough to try and kill them) because they murdered your mother, you know they possess abilities that can trick you, and that they kill humans. Are you SERIOUSLY going to just melt into a little submissive puddle and do whatever your captor asks you to just because he's hot? People find her "annoying." This is ridiculous. Of course she's annoying. She's a rebellious teenager with a full head of steam and no one is telling her the whole story. We don't have to love her to pieces in order to understand and appreciate her position.
The flashbacks and chapters starring her mother were really interesting, and became more and more gripping as the book continued.
Honestly, this whole book just sucked me in like crazy. Emotional, fascinating, romantic, suspenseful... I think that a massive part of the appeal is that the main characters aren't "perfect" and their combined decisions leave us feeling all sorts of complicated emotions. Something like wanting to tear my hair out, go in for a group hug, and fight alongside them all at the same time.

The ending was a little rushed in my opinion, thus the 4 star rating instead of 5. It just didn't feel like an organic outcome for Amalie. I get why she has to do what she has to do, but her vibe felt a little forced. Plus, I read somewhere that this book is only 1 in a series of 5, so it would make sense that we need to have a couple steps back as well as forward to keep the pacing right for the whole series.

ARGH. Now that I'm done typing this all out... I'm in. I'm totally reading the next book. I'm sure that whatever our main couple goes through is going to get me feeling all the feels again, but I think that's one of the reasons I just couldn't put this book down (and ended up eating it alive all in one day). Bring it on, Cindy Gunderson! I can't wait to read what you write next!

A great fantasy read, I will definitely be looking forward to book two!

Amalie is determined to have justice for her mother, murdered by a vampire.

The twist and turns in this book were great! I loved the vampires and the little bit of romance. The cliffhanger had me wishing book 2 was already out! I really enjoyed all of the characters and the emotions in the book, definitely kept me quite intrigued! It was a fun and mysterious read.

I did get a little confused at a few points when it went back to Amalies mothers story in the book but once I got to the ending of her story everything from the rest of the book had made perfect sense.

Amalie is determined to have justice after her mom's brutal murder by a vampire. She runs away from home to join a group of vampire hunters, and when she sees the vampire, Theo, she seizes the opportunity and kills him with an ash spike. However, her triumphant return home is upended when Theo attacks her in her home. The two strike an uneasy bargain: Amalie will help Theo search for a relic that can truly kill vampires, and Theo will protect Amalie in the process. Amalie doesn't trust any vampire, but as more things about her mother and her own bloodline come to light, she's forced to reconsider all she thought she knew.

I'm very conflicted about this book. Amalie is a headstrong teenager who is determined to keep her family safe as she hunts for justice. She takes action and does what she thinks is ethical, which would normally make her a very compelling protagonist. Unfortunately, like a true teenager, she could jump to conclusions for the Olympics, and she lets her emotions prevent her from getting necessary information from others. She also wildly toggles between completely hating and distrusting Theo, to completely trusting and loving him multiple times throughout the book. This is accurate behavior for a teen, though, and I appreciate that our teenage protagonist actually acts like a teen. I just personally got frustrated with her wildly vacillating thoughts and feelings, which gave me whiplash.

The world building of the book was very enjoyable. The origin of vampires is very interesting, and the concept of guardians very creative. The elements of rebirth and repeating past actions also added a layer of fatalism and depth. That being said, the ending was a bit erratic, with partial explanations and Amalie making further leaps to conclusions. While her actions absolutely make sense with the information given, the lack of concrete evidence to back up her suspicions creates a somewhat unfulfilling conclusion. However, I'm interested in seeing how Amalie matures and what happens next within the series.

ARC reader. This means I received the book from the author (or Booksirens in this case), and while I usually try to honor any requests accompanying ARC copies, I believe that, above all, readers deserve my honest opinion (no requests made for this one, except for reviewing within 30 days). Therefore, my review and rating are in no way affected by any external requests and reflect my true experience with the book.

Ok, I don't really know how to start this because I feel very conflicted about how the book wrapped up.

The first portion (30-40%), was captivating. I loved the atmosphere, the storyline, the worldbuilding, the vampire lore, Le Sombre and Solene. I was super invested. I still am.

As the story progressed, there seemed to be a lot of monotonous dialogue that didn't move the plot forward. It felt like the FMC was caught in a loop of secrecy and cyptic hints, where a lot is implied (and understood by the characters, somehow) but not explained to the reader.

As for the ending, it felt like a shift in tone or a new direction was introduced. I didn't resonate with character decisions and how things unraveled, especially with the sudden deus ex machina-like resolution without much clarity on Amalie's abilities and limitations. I won't comment further on the sword and the rings but to me this was extremely frustrating.

I understand that my review may seem harsh, but it's more an expression of my wish for the story's potential to fully shine. The world is wonderfully crafted and the main characters have strong chemistry. It just felt as though the plot's development was deliberately held back at times.

I still feel it deserves a 3/5, as the lore and worldbuilding were so engaging and I genuinely want to know more. To me, a more concise middle section and more meaningful context could have made this book a delicacy.

➡️ Enemies to lovers
➡️ Forbidden romance
➡️ Forced proximity
➡️ Multiple timelines
➡️ Dark fantasy/Gothic atmosphere
➡️ Slowburn

Plot 4.25/5

Ending 4.25/5

Overall 4.25/5

-Picking this book up, I didn’t think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did. I thought it would be a fun book to read but then I fell into this world and I fully immersed. I didn’t particularly feel the time period fit very well, in fact, I didn’t it necessary to be mentioned at all but it didn’t really sway my reading experience that much. The story line between the vampires, the humans and then the guardians also coming into play, everything was all so intriguing and I had a great time reading how everything was playing out.

-from the beginning, I really liked Amalie, again she didn’t really feel like she fit the time period this book was set in but it’s not too bad once I looked past it. Theo was also a very intriguing character. He had a very interesting personality which at first I had trouble figuring out. But as the book went on, I understood him more and more and I ended up really liking him. Together, they made a great couple, which at first I kinda thought it wasn’t slow burn enough but then I got to understand the full extent of their relationship.

-The ending revealed to much that I hadn’t expected. From a prophecy, to reincarnation and then everything else that was going on in the moment. I enjoyed this ending because it didn’t end a long while after the events of the book, leaving a lot to be desired. But not particularly that I need a sequel in the instant. It’s more curiosity about the past, the future of these characters and this world.

The setting in France is actually one of my favorite parts of the book. The atmosphere felt rich and gothic, and the imagery in the beginning really pulled me in.

However, somewhere between 30% and 75% I started feeling lost. The timeline jumping was confusing, and there were sections that felt like filler rather than moving the story forward. On top of that, I kept feeling like there were holes in the plot. I assume that the author was intentionally holding back information, but instead of building suspense, it left me frustrated because I didn’t have the full picture.

Thankfully, the last quarter made up for a lot. Secrets started bubbling up, the pacing kicked into high gear, and by the ending I was hooked again. It left plenty open for the sequel, which I do plan to read.

Where it fell short for me was the character development. I never felt like I fully knew Amalie or Theo, which made it harder to be invested in their journeys.

If you’re into gothic vibes and classic tropes, you’ll find: enemies to lovers, hidden identities, betrayals, prophecies, and the whole “chosen one” setup. Just be ready to push through some muddled middle sections to get to the juicy payoff at the end.

I'm conflicted. The story started as many vampire slayer books before it and it kinda dragged and wasn't eventful (the audiobook was delightful BTW - it was set in France so everyone had their French accent :-D though I always thought the natives shouldn't hear accents because it's natural to them?!) while the author always alluded to something mysterious and important to the story which was just outside our grasp which made the book also frustrating.
The story picked up its pace just at the ending and I was left with so many questions and no answers. What I saw at the end though was one big redemption since some stuff got unveiled and the main characters started actually playing their parts. So I hope this was just a warm-up and the next book will make up for everything in this one.
The vampire lore in here was very promising but also confusing since I didn't know who was telling the truth and who was just acting to achieve their goals but it looked unique enough to pique my interest. I can't really elaborate on anything in order to make it spoiler-free for you but the motifs of special bloodlines, rebirth and making the same mistake over and over again was very nice.

3/5⭐️

I received this book from BookSirens and honestly I was so excited to read it especially because I love anything vampires but I ended the book with mixed feelings.

Amalie has spent years training to avenge her mother’s death and prove the existence of vampires to her uncle. Her quarry: Theo Vallon. Everything changes after she drives a stake through his heart.

At first the book felt confusing as the story switches between past and present but slowly it turned to be quite interesting and important to the story.

The lore and world building were so interesting yet not enough? I wanted to know more but it felt short in some areas especially with stuff that the characters somehow always knew but us as the readers were left in the dark with

Overall a great concept and take on vampires that wasn’t delivered how it should’ve. I liked it enough to maybe read the next book as it does end on a cliffhanger and might help me get some clarification.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys dark, gothic fantasy, enemies to lovers, multiple timelines and slow burn!!

To Vanquish Darkness was quite the surprise for me. I’ve read several books by this author and had a picture in my mind of what to expect but this was different.

I found this to be a unique take on vampire novels. With guardians, legends, and opposing forces it was filled with mysteries that book one only hinted at, setting the stage for the continuation of the story while still holding my interest in the lives of the characters.

Though there were dark moments in the book it was more character driven, with light and darkness coming through their actions and environment.

Theo and Amalie were drawn to each other, but there were secrets unrevealed between them that caused fear and misunderstanding, yet there was an unbreakable bond as well. What will book two bring?

If you’re a fantasy or vampire fan this book is for you. I received a copy courtesy of the author. This is my honest opinion of the book.

I was very lucky to have received an arc copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thanks.

First of all… VAMPIRES and the lore say no more 🩸 🧛‍♂️ Theo Vallon didn’t disappoint!! What is it about vampire love interests that just keeps you hooked and wanting to know more. The romance between Amalie and Theo was great for the most part, but it felt a tad too juvenile at times and unnatural, especially for Theo due to his age.

I can appreciate the idea of this story and although I enjoyed the characters and the plot to some extent, I kinda felt it lacked that certain je ne sais quoi iykyk. Amalie got on my nerves which spoilt it for me and I nearly dnf’d it a few times.

Overall, it wasn’t for me and I felt like it took ages to finish this book which is why I gave it 3 stars. I hope the second book clarifies a few things and answers some questions that I’m sure everyone will want to know. I would still recommend it tho.

Amalie can’t relinquish her chance to avenge her mother’s death and rid the region of the vampire’s dark plague, but as her blood surges toward the darkness she was created to satisfy, she realizes she may have traipsed willingly into the spider’s den.

I do like that this is a different take on a vampire story the lore was engaging. The beginning half was amazing and a page turner I was getting sucked in and excited to see where it would take me but I felt like it trailed off some areas it got confusing the back and forth. But I did enjoy the romance between Amalie and Theo not sure if I will pick up book two but I do appreciate it not being the average vampire book.

Try the book out you may enjoy it I have heard mixed reviews some love it some not so much.

I received an ARC of To Vanquish Darkness. There’s a lot to appreciate here—unique vampire mythology, a dark and gothic tone, and a slow-burn relationship at the center. The alternating timelines bring interesting layers to the plot, though they were a bit confusing at first.

Where it fell short for me was in execution. Too often, important plot points felt vague or underexplained, which made it harder to stay fully immersed. Some conversations seemed to circle the same ground, slowing the momentum, and I struggled to connect with the main characters’ choices.

Still, the author clearly has a creative vision for this world, and the cliffhanger ending has me curious about where the series will go next. Fans of atmospheric fantasy with a moody edge might enjoy this one more than I did.

Let me preface this by saying that I really liked this book - it was a fast paced multidimensional story, it kept me hooked from the very end and I can't wait to read the second.

Having said that, I think there were a few too many plot holes. I don't know if the author did this intentionally so that can be filled in in the second book, but sometimes I feel like some thinga were left unexplained or that certain details were glazed over. I can understand that the author wants to leave somethings for book 2 where I hope they are further explained.

Having said all this - I literally read this book in one sitting! The author did (in my opinion) a fantastic job leaving almost every chapter with enough of a cliffhanger to keep you reading!

I really liked this book it had a really unique premise as well as a format of an alternative story and just for that I gave 4 stars. It is very plot-heavy which was a bit too much at times otherwise it would be 5 stars.

The description I found a bit confusing especially in the beginning and it the end with the relationships between the MC’s.

The setting was really good and had a really detailed location which was I liked.

I would recommend this for anyone who likes gothic fantasy romance with paranormal elements which is very plot heavy.

I enjoyed the premise of the story. However, it feels like it never really got anywhere. It just felt a little lacking in each arc, not fully fleshed out. In terms of characters, you don't really get to know any of the characters except the lead character Amalie who happens to be one of the most annoying characters I've ever encountered. I just didn't like her at all. Theo seems really interesting but we don't see him a lot which is a pity. All in all it wasn't a bad book, I did enjoy parts but Amalie annoyed me and the story just didn't flow as well as it could.

Boyyyyyy did it take me some time to finish it!

And the strangest is - I cannot really say it was bad. The characters are very likeable, their dynamics -believable. I'm even quite interested to read a second part. I wonder is it the fact that the pace slowed down by the middle, or that a certain character (no spoiler) seemed like being extremely stupid and gullible just for the purposes of dragging the story more or stirring up some events, but something between those lines made put it aside for quite a time, until I finally pushed to proceed. Once I a bit forced myself to move forward with it, the dynamics of events resumed and I could finish it with ease.

Stunning book. I absolutely loved the twists and plot, and while I felt the character development was a little underwhelming, I'm about to start book 2, where I'm hoping that pays off! I really love that this is a new and unique vampire system, and how fascinating the backstory is. The writing is lovely and easy to follow, making this a fantastic palate cleanser as well. I am eager to see where the story goes in 'To Shatter Bonds'!

I thought this was an interesting approach to vampire books. It has guardians, legends, and opposing forces. It kept me interested in the characters' lives while laying the groundwork for the rest of the plot. Although Theo and Amalie were attracted to one another, they also shared unspoken secrets that led to mistrust and anxiety, but they also had an unbreakable friendship. What can we expect from the series' next book?

This was a fast paced read. I liked the world building, wish there had been more detail, but I'm sure that'll come in book two.

The story was easy to follow and has some good twists and turns along the way.

Overall, MMC fell a bit flat for me. He seemed one dimensional, I wasn't intrigued to learn more about him. The supporting cast held more of my interest. FMC was more dynamic, I enjoyed her more.

Well written. The first part is a bit confusing as it jumps from past to present and back and forth, but then it is apparent that this is needed to really add depth to the story and explain things.

I think the main characters are both likable and easy to enjoy and feel for. The plot seems to move a bit slowly but the storyline is solid. The writing style makes it worth reading and I would like to see the conclusion to this series.

Worth the read

This book could have been limited to 5 chapters if the main heroine just stopped with her internal overthinking monologs and stopped to listen. She has a ton of questions and yet when people try to answer she either doesn't believe them or doesn't listen because she is too busy arguing with them. The storyline is interesting yet hard to get through because the FMC is so obnoxiously annoying and whiny.

FIVE STAR READ

Oh my god! I barely have words. I started this book and finished it all in one day. I have read so many books this year and not one of them could I confidently rate five stars… but this one takes the absolute cake. Probably top 5 fave books. It’s so captivating, and I love how all the twists and turns were slowly revealed, there a point where I wasn’t sure which vampire I could trust or not. Genuinely, such a good book. Can’t wait to start the second!

I really enjoyed this book! The writing style pulled me in right away, the characters were likable, and the world-building was well done. It had all the makings of a five-star read for me. The only reason I’m giving it four stars instead is that the ending dragged a bit and started losing my attention. Still, it was a great read overall, and I’m glad I picked it up.
