Fame, money, photographing the most beautiful women in Britain naked, Harry Levi has it all. Born in 1919 from a dynasty of Jewish Italian criminals who came to England in the 1700s, and built a business empire on robbery, prostitution and even, murder, Harry has tried to break the mould. Initially, he gains a reputation as a photojournalist covering some momentous events of the period. But it is when he moves into glamour photography and filmmaking from his Soho studio base, that things start to go awry. His dealings with some of the most famous celebrities and gangsters of the time together with relationship problems eventually lead to a complex life.
A debut work providing so much background information on Italian and Jewish culture as well as many surprises about London's gang land.
Based is such a credible setting, this was a fast-paced page turner which, for me, was reminiscent of Kate Atkinson's "Shrines of Gaiety". Moving from family saga to a bit of a romp for one main character, "Timed Exposure" entertains and educates in equal measure and is a seriously good read.
