One can’t choose their parents or the life they were born into, but one can choose to be who they will become.
Born a Lowlander, Kyra lives on the outskirts of the city of Mountain Side. Growing up, she didn’t know her father, but her mother did what she could to ensure her daughter’s happiness. However, Kyra’s mother worries about what others might do to her daughter if they discover what she is capable of. Because of this, she keeps their life as quiet as possible and only ventures from their home when necessary to purchase supplies from the city.
Since turning seventeen, Kyra has become restless and wants to experience more than just their home and the fields around it. She wants to experience the city and the people within it. With the harvest upon them, Kyra convinces her reluctant mother to allow her to find work as a field hand. While working, Kyra is befriended by two teenage field workers from within the city, and she starts to experience things for the first time. As her world opens up, Kyra learns of a dark secret about her that forever changes her life and forces her to figure out her place in the world.
I just finished Kyra of the North by David Decker and ended up reading the whole thing in one day. The story grabbed me right away and kept me hooked. The characters were my favorite part. They felt real and easy to connect with, and I cared about what happened to them. That made all the twists in the story hit harder than they would’ve otherwise.
I also really liked how much the book focused on family and friendship. There was a great mix of adventure, emotion, and twists. A few characters showed up that I didn’t expect, and they added a lot to the story. This one is definitely worth checking out.
I can say without a doubt this is one of the most unique books I’ve read! It’s a self-published YA fantasy novel by my friend and colleague, David Decker.
Kyra of the North follows the journey of a young woman coming of age in a bygone era. After the tragic death of Kyra’s girlfriend, she embarks on a quest to uncover the truth about her father and, ultimately, her own identity. The story takes some unexpected turns—one big twist coming about a third of the way through when she uncovers some clues about her father. Her quest is upended when she finds herself captured and thrust into a gladiator-like arena. Every day after is a literal fight to the death. Will Kyra ever be able to escape and find happiness?
The tale explores themes of loss, identity, and resilience painted on the landscape of an imaginative world. It is obvious that Decker poured his heart into creating Kyra’s universe. This genre is a little outside my typical realm, but the story will resonate with teen readers who enjoy character-driven stories with a blend of fantasy and adventure.
Five stars to Decker for the hard work and dedication in bringing Kyra’s story to life. Also… let’s give a nod to the amazing cover art by Leslie Casilli!
This book was such a great page turner. Made you really feel for the characters and the events that they were going through. The author sets up a beautiful world that I hope gets explored more in future books, and we get to hear more of Kyra story.
