A few silly what I call "For Kids Who Will Tell Future Dad/Uncle or Aunt" Jokes. Everything is simple and big and cute. The robot book was a smidgen funnier in my book, but this works as well.
How To Make A Shark Laugh joins several other titles in the How to Make Them Laugh series by Chris Cate. I’ve got mixed thoughts about this book and the series as a whole. I get what they’re going for - a joke book series appealing to a younger audience, but the target age range (4-8) doesn’t make sense for jokes that are primarily puns or plays on words. A lot of these jokes even went over my six-year-old’s head.
Take the “so-fish-ticated” joke, for example. Funny? Sure, but how many four-year-olds know the word “sophisticated”? Even if they know the vocabulary, they have to connect it to the idea, too, which is another hurdle to clear on the way to the punchline. For the most part, this book ended up with me explaining shark jokes to my kids and sucking all the fun out of it.
My other chief complaint is the length. There’s very little to this book. There’s no storyline and only a handful of corny shark-related jokes. Compare that to a typical joke book that’s going to have dozens or even hundreds of jokes. Sure, they don’t usually have pictures, but the illustrations add next to nothing to the value of the text with this title anyway.
I think this has a market as a gift for a kid that is shark-obsessed, but beyond that, there’s not much point to it, and it’s not really ideal for the intended age group..
