One Hundred Lights: A Holiday Romance Novella

Rate this book
One school dance. Two single parents who should stay away from each other. A magical holiday hunt for one hundred boxes of fairy lights for their kids’ school dance that makes falling in love inevitable.

*content this book contains an almost-cheating trope (not between the main characters)*

Britt
There are few worse things than developing feelings for your best friend’s husband. I tried to do the right thing and step away from both of them, but they got divorced anyway. That’s definitely one of those worse things. And now Adrian’s at my front door, insisting on helping me decorate for the kids’ holiday dance. And I still want him. I also still want to make up with my best friend, but I’m afraid it’s all unforgivable.

Adrian
I know I should stay away from my ex-wife’s ex-best friend. Britt doesn’t want to see me. She pushed us away six months ago, but things still ended in divorce. Now I’m trying to get it together as a single dad, and I keep running into Britt at school events. I want to smooth things over with her. Britt won’t talk to me, but she needs help with the school dance, so if I just show up at the planning meeting, she won’t be able to say no. What could go wrong with this plan?

What’s it about?
Britt developed feelings for her best friend, Reese’s, husband, Adrian. When she realized it, she pulled herself out of their lives.

Now 6 months after Adrian and Reese’s divorce, Adrian shows back up to help Brittney find 100 strands of lights for their children’s middle school dance.

Along the way, they finally give into the feelings they have always harbored for one another.

My thoughts:

The characters in this book are messy, but I also loved that they were such a disaster. Real love and relationships are complex with a lot of moving parts and nuances. Hopewell does a great job of showing that people can still find love when everything else is falling apart.

This is a novella, so it’s short and sweet, but I never felt like I was missing anything while reading. I especially loved the cats.

ARC Review: 4/5 stars

So confession: I have a habit of reading things out of order, which I did with this series! I started with Since We're Here (book 3) then read One Hundred Lights (Prequel) so I might have a different opinion, especially because I haven't read book 1 yet. But here's my newbie to the series review! ❤️

First off: I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I would've read the series in order (my fault!) here's my wishes then we'll get into the things I loved!

I wish this book had more humor. It felt so heavy on the regret for the relationship, there left little room for some comedy like I remember in "Since We're Here". I missed it!

Other than that I thought this book was cute! I was a little hesitant because I didn't think I would like the trope of "ex-husband and ex-best friend", but it didn't give me the ick or intense cheating vibes like I thought it would. That was a plus for me! I think these two genuinely were meant to be together and it took a lot of courage for them to pursue their relationship.

This is a pretty quick read and it was pretty easy! It definitely cemented in my brain I need to read the rest of the series because I need to get to know Reese and get her thoughts!

This is a heartwarming and festive novella that serves as a prequel to the Hart Sisters series. Set against the backdrop of the holiday season, this short story explores themes of love, redemption, and second chances.

The story centers on Britt, who distanced herself from her best friend Reese and Reese’s husband Adrian after realizing she had developed feelings for him. Fast forward six months after Reese and Adrian’s divorce, Adrian reenters Britt’s life to help her gather 100 boxes of Christmas lights for a middle school dance. What begins as a seemingly simple errand transforms into an emotional journey, as Britt and Adrian finally confront the feelings they've long suppressed.

Despite the story being really short, it delivers surprisingly well-rounded character development. The use of dual POV adds depth to both Britt and Adrian, allowing readers to understand their struggles, emotions, and mutual respect. Hopewell handles the potentially controversial "ex-best friend's ex-husband" trope with sensitivity, ensuring the relationship feels natural and respectful. There’s no betrayal here—just two people who are clearly meant to be together, finding love at the right time in their lives.

The holiday setting adds a cozy charm to the story, and small details, like the amusing names of Britt’s cats, add a touch of humor and personality. Although I enjoyed the fun Christmas light hunt, I felt the story could have leaned even more into the holiday spirit to amplify its Christmassy charm.

One Hundred Lights is a quick, sweet read perfect for fans of heartfelt Christmas romances. It’s a testament to how love can bloom in unexpected places and times, and it’s bound to leave you with a warm, festive glow.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Chrissy Hopewell for sending me a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

I didn’t realize that this story is part of the author’s Hart Sisters series, which I have not read any of. Normally, this would put me off reading this book because I don’t enjoy feeling like I’m coming into the story where previous events from the other books are alluded to. Though this does happen in this story, I decided to overlook it and I’m glad I did because the story was enjoyable and learning that I might actually hate Britt and Adrian if I read the other stories, I probably won’t read them because I actually liked Britt and Adrian a lot.

I don’t think developing feelings for your best friend’s husband is ever a good idea but the way Britt and Adrian dealt with it was likely the only way, however, their feelings ran so much deeper and even though Britt tried to do the admirable thing and stay away from them, Adrian and his wife got divorced anyway. My only issue with this story was Britt’s desire to get her friendship with Adrian’s ex-wife back. I think Britt is asking for the impossible, especially when Reese finds out that Britt and Adrian do get together.

This book moves pretty fast with each chapter alternating between Britt and Adrian’s perception, which I really enjoy. I thought the characters were easy to relate to and it was easy to see how their friendship could begin to blossom into something more and it was quite sweet to witness.

My Final Verdict: Overall, this story is a good addition to the Christmas reading list. I recommend it to readers who enjoy Christmas themes, forbidden love and second chance tropes.

Adrian & Britt!!

Rounding to 4 ⭐️

I was so hesitant to and nervous to read this book. Falling for your besties husband?? How dare she?? I was curious to see if there is a world where that would be okay and honestly this book solidified that there can be a HEA and they deserved it to explore their relationship.

Silly me, I didn't read these in order and really wish I did but for a fun and sexy holiday novella, this was a fun treat!

I just wished we could have had more! It felt too short to me personally.

I do have to say that I loved Chrissy's writing especially in Adrian's POV.

Spice: 🌶️
Rating: 3.75
10/10 Recommend to a friend that's interested in a love story between a gal and her besties husband. (Such a new and interesting dynamic)

Thank you for NetGalley & Chrissy for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review. I'm so exited to read the rest of the series.

Ive never read any of the other books in the series but don’t feel like I missed out or needed to read the others to grasp the story. It’s a really quick read, with a festive holiday feel and it’s definitely a book to read if you don’t want something to serious or deep or your in a slump.
My one burning question is how do you stop a hundred boxes of lights from tangling up next Christmas because let’s face it that’s a heck of a lot of fairy lights and they always tangle up lol!

I received this book as an arc through NetGalley and I’m so glad I read it. It is a sweet holiday themed novella and I really enjoyed reading. The FMC and MMC are a little questionable as their attraction began while he was married but in their defence they didn’t act on their attraction until the divorce was final. It’s a mild spice novella with some cute cat names (ie: “Captain Underpants” lol) and a really sweet story. Can’t wait to add this novella to my bookshelf!
I rated it 4⭐️!

“I close my lids. Dammnit. That feeling is still there. Worse. And the warmth blossoming from my chest is a physical ache to have him touch me.”

One Hundred Lights was a short read. Maybe too short if I’m being honest.
This book is a prequel to the Hart Sisters series, a series I absolutely love. Britt and Adrian are Bree’s –MFC in the first book– (ex)best-friend and ex-husband.
I loved the idea of showing the ”others” POV is a great idea, and Chrissy Hopewell does it greatly because I truly had empathy for them and found they have a good chemistry. I loved Britt and all her feelings, and I loved how Adrian realizes how much his ex was doing for their family before the divorce and now tries to be there for his daughter.
However, the story is too short to make it work at 100%. There are a lot of feelings here, especially for Britt who has to deal with her feelings for Adrian (who was her crush when she was a teenager), and her guilt regarding Reese. 100 pages weren’t enough for that and her struggle then her change, when she decides to indulge in her feelings, felt rushed. On the same page, there wasn’t enough space for true magic, especially regarding the ball decoration. There was a lot of potential here, but it would have needed more length for the characters to deal with their internal wars and questionings, for the fairytale mood to settle. But that’s probably me being greedy for that series that I love so much. One Hundred Lights remains a nice story, and a great way to begin to settle in a Christmas mood.

‘One Hundred Lights,’ is a christmas novella focusing on Britt and Adrian. Britt is a headstrong single mother who runs a tech agency but this Christmas just wants to make the Christmas party for her son a magical night. Adrian has just had a recent divorce and is figuring out what he wants from life. Britt and Adrian’s families were previously close friends until Britt confessed her feelings for Adrian splitting from the friendship.

The christmas vibes in this book were so enjoyable. I loved the christmas party scene and the hunting for lights concept both brought a joyful atmosphere to a plot that seems heavy otherwise. The sub-characters were a great addition to the plot and I am excited to read the rest of the series and understand everyone's narratives.

I should have read more into the tropes before picking up the novella. The characters individually have promise and come across genuine at times, their regrets are palpable. However, I just do not like the relationship. The nearly cheating trope is just not for me. The complicated relationship with Adrian’s ex-wife and Britt was really hard to read at times (which is the desired effect I guess) but Britts attempts to reconcile and the idea they could continue to be friends after a degradation of a marriage made me really dislike Britt.

I would recommend this book to people who are interested in darker romances or tropes that have more complications than your standard romance convention. I would recommend for anyone to read it before christmas as it was a good christmas read.

This is a lovely, heartfelt, holiday romance that blends the magic of Christmas with complex emotions of love, guilt, and forgiveness.

Britt is caught in a difficult situation. Adrian is her best friend's husband and she has inconveniently developed feelings for him. She is trying to do the right thing but finds herself in a tricky emotional situation. When Adrian’s marriage ends and he starts showing up in her life more frequently, Britt finds it increasingly hard to stay away. Adrian, too, has his own regrets and desires to make things right, but he’s also struggling with the fallout from his divorce and his responsibilities as a single dad.

It’s a difficult path for Britt, especially as she tries to balance her own desires with the guilt over her past actions. Her fear of betraying her best friend and Adrian’s desperation to fix things with everyone around him provide the perfect combination for their slow-burning romance.

The characters are well-developed and flawed which make them realistic and relatable. Their chemistry is undeniable, and watching them work through their past mistakes, both individually and together, creates a satisfying tension throughout the story.

Overall, this is a sweet, emotional read that will satisfy fans of second chances, slow-burn romances, and holiday cheer. While the almost-cheating trope may be uncomfortable for some, it's handled with sensitivity, focusing on the journey of healing and self-discovery. The perfect read if you're looking for a holiday romance with a bit of heartache, redemption, and, of course, a happily-ever-after.

I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Horrible.

I was sceptical as to whether I’d enjoy this one - since it features a best friend and ex-husband getting together, so mild cheating vibes.

The FMC Britt, however, won me over from the first chapter. She seemed genuinely remorseful about the betrayal of her best friend, and whilst mourning the loss of that friendship she’s allowing her space and distance. This is a level of maturity that is rarely seen in these types of romance plots, where the main characters don’t want to take responsibility for their actions and instead try to place blame on a failing marriage etc.

This seems like a unique situation, they met first and essentially fell for each other. Then reconnected years later when he was married - she then became best friends with his wife.

Overall I enjoyed this - I was sceptical as I hate cheating as a trope, but this was a different take. They regretted their actions and worked through the guilt, and I genuinely felt that they belonged together. A cute Christmas novella despite the circumstances of their relationship.

Now to go back and read the others in the series - as this got me invested in their stories.

Confession time: I love mess. Falling for your best friend's husband? Yes, inject it into my TBR and my veins.

Britt and Adrian both appear in If We Pretend, when they are desperate to patch things up with his ex-wife and her ex best friend, and even though of course I'm on Team Reese, not gonna lie, I felt a little sympathetic for these two--they fell in love without wanting to and they tried to do everything right, but they made a mess that they really want to fix. So this novella is their story!

Britt and Adrian have to work together decorating for their kids' holiday dance--he wants to smooth things over with her, and she just wants her best friend back, but their chemistry is too much. I love these two, they were inevitable, and they freed Reese up for a hot Scot.

If you're looking for a quick, steamy holiday read with a little bit of the forbidden, if you've read this series or not, give this novella a go! Then read the whole series, because it gets better with each book!

Some things just aren't all black and white. And this is so much true when we talk about feelings. We don't control who we fall in love with, and sometimes that just sucks.
Britt can attest to that, since she fell in love with her best friend's husband. So she did what she had to - she walked away from both, so she wouldn't do something she would regret and hurt her best friend. What she didn't expect was they they ended divorced all the same.
She misses her friend dearly, but she knows it was for the best. Until Adrian shows up at the parents's school dance meeting and tries to start to help her organize it. And as they start spending time together she realises her feelings didn't disapear and he has feelings also!
But what about her ex-best friend? Could she ever forgive her? Should she even try? And if she gives in to her feelings what then?
This book shows us a trouble between following your heart or your mind, and learning to live with that choice. Is it the right one? Well, only time could tell.

Book Review: 100 Lights

100 Lights is a delightful holiday novella that wraps readers in the warm, cozy glow of a charming love story. Though it’s a brief read, the story is well-written, with a smooth narrative flow and just enough backstory to pull readers into the characters’ world. The author sets up the romance quickly, yet it feels natural given that the couple has known each other for some time. This history makes their quick connection believable and gives readers a sense of depth in a compact story.

The Christmas atmosphere adds a lovely touch, bringing a cheerful and festive vibe that perfectly complements the romance. The story doesn’t delve deeply into plot twists or complex character development, but it works well within the novella format, especially as part of a series where more details can unfold over time. Overall, 100 Lights is a sweet, cozy read that’s perfect for a quick escape into a festive, romantic world. It’s ideal for anyone who enjoys holiday romances that leave a warm, satisfied feeling.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!
Full disclosure: My review is late, and I haven't read the other books in the series yet!
One Hundred Lights is a holiday novella that narrows in on Britt and Adrian's relationship. Both are single parents who are recently divorced. Adrian was Britt's best friends HUSBAND!! That's what hooked me, best friends husband? Count me in, but don't let it happen to me. However, I feel somewhat sympathetic for them because you truly can't help who you fall for.
Britt and Adrian have a Middle School Winter Dance to plan, Adrian volunteers to help Britt go on a wild goose chase for Christmas lights, he feels this is the best way to get through to her and their undeniable chemistry.
This book brings the holiday, and it's a fairly short read. Easy to finish in one sitting! I loved these two together so much, even though I'm not a huge fan of how they came together (hence the 3.5 star rating)! I will be going back and reading the rest of the books in this series!
Thank you for the e-ARC!

In this novella we explore the relationship of two people who share this sort of forbidden love because he’s her best friend's (ex)husband and she thinks she broke them up. Having no prior knowledge of the series this is part of, I think this book was what a prequel should be! I think the author got straight to the point in introducing the characters that did not necessarily require you to read the other books in the series (I will definitely be going back and reading those, though!) I felt very immersed in the story as the author is very descriptive in their writing but not in a way that drags the story out. The novella was short and to the point, but not at the expense of the cutesy story.

This novella is a short read and great if you want to get in the holiday spirit without too much of a time commitment!

One hundred lights is a novella set during the holidays. It's the prequel to the book If We Pretend (the first book in the Hart Sisters Trilogy).
You don't have to read the series first to understand this story, because the author did great introducing the characters in this novella.
I must say I'm not very keen on the whole cheating/best friend's husband trope, but Chrissy managed to give me the feeling that these two belong together (sorry Reese) and that's why I didn't hate it.
I did miss a bit more humor like there was in Since we're here, but I guess Chrissy spoiled me a bit too much with that one.
This novella was short and straight to the point, which i really liked. Perfect for people in a reading slumb.
I totally recommend this novella and the Hart Sisters series!

I recently finished One Hundred Lights: A Holiday Romance Novella, and while there were definitely some positives, there were also areas that left me wanting more. The novella's length makes for a quick read, which is great for those looking to dive into something short. I enjoyed the authors writing style. There were moments where I felt a real connection with them, and I was curious to see how their stories would unfold.

However, the plot seemed to lack the complexity and depth needed to keep me fully engaged. The story had a lot of potential, but I think a bit more development in the plot and characters history would have really brought it to life.

If you're looking for a quick read and are open to a light story, it’s worth giving it a read.

Okay this was the cutest holiday novella! I really enjoyed reading this and loved the authors writing!

I have not read any of the other books in the series but definitely will after this. I was also not confused at all while I read this.

I love a quick and easy read and this was that for sure and it left me wanting more. Falling for your best friends husband?!? I was all in and ready for the ride.

Adrian and Britt are meant to be and no one can tell me otherwise! (I do feel like the relationship was a little rushed but again this is a novella so it’s expected) Amazing job Chrissy Hopewell you’ve gained a new reader for sure!

This Christmas novella definitely packed a punch! Falling for your best friends husband? CHECK!
Spice? CHECK! Cozy Christmas vibes? CHECK!

While this is a prequel to the series, it starts after the major fall out between two characters marriage. It was a bit tricky to follow for the first few pages but once the initial info dump/world building, happened it was a really fun ride! The "forbidden love" at christmas time was something I could read again and again!

This is a prequel novella but I think it needed to be longer.

Britt is friends with Reese, but falls in love with her husband Adrian. Even if he doesn’t cheat, they divorce and Britt tries to stay away from both of them.
So a friendship and a marriage are ended.

But after 6 months Britt and Adrian work together and help decorate their kids’ holiday dance.

I think the relationship developed really fast and everything seemed rushed.

This book is ok as a quick holiday read, but I would have liked more character development.

Like the Hart Sister’s Trilogy, I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and I would have finished it the day I started if real life didn’t get in the way.
Did I slightly hate Britt and Adrian when I dove into this? Yes. Do I think in the end they’re cute together? Also yes.
Do I now want to hang a bunch of Christmas lights in my living room even though it’s only October? 100% definitely (even though I’m an avid spooky season lover)
If you’ve seen my reviews before you know I hate spoilers so I’m going to leave it at this:
This was a really cute holiday story and I definitely see myself hanging up a bunch of lights and rereading this around Christmas time.
Definitely read it.

Christmas novella that is a super quick read? Count me in!

I have not read the first two books in this series BUT I have read the last book and have enough of an understanding about Britt and Adrian to ✨not like them✨ However, I love Chrissy’s writing style and will read anything she writes.

This is an ex-best friend’s ex-husband romance. Personally, I could not understand Britt falling for Adrian and vice versa because while I love the way my best friend’s husband loves her and could not pick anyone better for her, no. And I 100% know he feels the same 😂 This is the only reason I have this a four star instead of a five.

Britt and Adrian are single parents. Britt used to be best friends with Adrian and his then wife Reese. I loved the banter and the spice but I don’t think the cheating but not really cheating trope is for me. Coupled with not being a girls’ girl and it’s your best friend and I’m out.

If none of that bothers you in a book and you can look at it as just a steamy holiday story, this is for you. It’s a prequel and I am going to read the other books since I really do like Chrissy Hopewell’s writing style. Super cute holiday cover too!

A slightly forbidden ‘almost cheating but not quite’ story. Britt has feelings for her best friend’s husband so distances herself from their family. The best friend and her husband divorce, and now Britt and Adrian are working together on their kids school Christmas dance.

This was a quick read and nice story. I did find myself rooting for Britt and Adrian and could tell they had chemistry, but it didn’t wow me. I am intrigued to know Reese’s story.

This novella follows Britt, a single mom who falls in love with her best friend’s husband, Adrian. The angst is palpable, making you wish you could fix it for her. Britt distances herself from her best friend and Adrian, focusing on her son—until Adrian shows up to help with a school dance party, reigniting their connection. Though I usually avoid this trope, the author handles it well, showing the complexities of their emotions. It’s a short read, but the backstory and inner struggles are well-developed.

Sometimes life is messy and you have to do what you have to do, even though it sucks, even though it's terrifying, but you know it's the right decision for you. (We've all been there, let's be honest.)

Britt and Adrian are exactly that, and they're so real for it. I love how Chrissy proves there's hope on the other side of that weird limbo before you take the plunge.

Now Reese is still my girl through and through, so to anyone having doubts about this short novella: you NEED to read Reese's book!!

Thank you to NetGalley, Fox Hollow Publishing and Chrissy Hopewell for allowing me to ARC read for ‘One Hundred Lights.’

This was an easy to read novella.
It is short, I estimate around 100 pages, but I still enjoyed this.
The characters were fun, things felt a little rushed due to the short nature of the book, but I found I didn’t care.
I loved the festive/ romance themes and the journey of overcoming what other people think.

I’d recommend adding this to your TBR for those who want a short, festive read to get them into the spirit.
