Torch: An Elemental Series

Rate this book
Running away from the dangerous Extremists seemed like the right thing to do.
But in her escape with Linc to a hidden, remote place in Northern Canada, she soon finds being on the run is just as dangerous. Crossing Elemental territory lines where boundaries are the most volatile, and prejudices run hot, Vela and Linc struggle to stay alive.
Limping into the uppermost reaches of Canada to their sanctuary, the Polar Bear Lodge, Vela and Linc discover a utopia. Families of intermarriages, couples with differing elements, have produced children with multiple gifts and Vela and Linc see what their world would be like if their clans stopped fighting and lived peacefully.
The answer is to unite the clans, which a long-awaited prophecy promises if the Chosen Child comes to do it. Vela is, once again, forced to accept she might be the mother of this Child, but is she willing to be a part of this prophecy?
To complicate her life further, someone in this community is determined to win Vela’s attention. Her Intended bond with Linc doesn’t stop this Elemental from trying everything he can to entice her.
Can Linc win the fight for her heart? Will this prophecy be her undoing or the Elementals' salvation?

Themes I saw: Walking through the hurt of pain and loss. Learning to heal together instead of shutting loved ones out. Hatred and fighting and the desire for unity and peace.

Read it if you love:

✔️YA Fantasy
✔️Sweet Romances
✔️Love Triangles
✔️Strong faith threads

Torch is book two in the elemental series. Vela and Linc are on the run to protect themselves from the dangerous E.E. group. As they venture to a place of protection off the grid, they find running can be dangerous too!

This novel is a teen romance, with a heart of purity and honoring God. I loved the tension in this book. Both the physical tension of the action scenes and the romantic tension in the love triangle.

I also loved how Vela wrestled with (and came to peace on) the question—is this the right choice? Are we suffering because we made the wrong choice, or because life is just hard?

I was gifted an arc copy, all opinions are my own.

I remember reading the first book in this series thinking that I really liked the author’s style of writing. I am thrilled to be back with the author as I delve into this book. Once again we are thrust into a place where strange things happen. It is easy to become engrossed in the story and I found myself right back with these characters on their journey. I love that the author has put faith throughout the story.

As we venture out with Vela we witness just how much danger is around. With the ability to heal, Vela is valuable to many. I liked when her powers were used to heal friends and her faithful dog. Perhaps the attack on them was just for fun, but beneath the surface darkness starts to arise.

The story is full of action and non ending danger as we witness Vela’s skills. It was nice to see that God plays a big part in the story . As I became more aware of what was going on in the story I witnessed friendship, faith and strong values that could not be shaken. Many times I wasn’t sure if Vela or her friends would survive. There is a little conflict between a few characters with Vela in the middle. Relationships are tested as conflicts start to interfere with friendship and trust.
I liked Linc and how much he cares for Vela. What happens when someone else has feelings for one of them?

Overall the story is good and enjoyable as we travel to a place where hope of a better life may exist. I like when Vela is steadfast in praying for safety. She cries out to God for help as things look bleak at times. Get ready for another installment in this exciting series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I had the pleasure of reading this as an ARC and this is my review.

Sofia has done it again if not even BETTER! Book 2 Torch in An Elemental Series will melt your heart, keep you on your toes, not sure who to root for (hmm a new possible romance maybe?), and screaming for more after that cliffhanger at the end.

This books touches on everything. Love, commitment, heart ache, loss, trust and 100% faith and what it means to have it. I was never a big reader of faith based books before I read this series but I have to admit I'm living for this type of genre and can't wait to read more from Sofia Simpson.

this series is so amazingly good. I love the relationship with Linc and Vela and I am so rooting for them. the world building in this series is top notch I love all the care she takes with a complicated magic system. I would have like more character growth and more community scenes in the book but that is more personal preference. this community is so much fun and I just wanted more of it.

without spoilers it is so hard to write a review on this book. So, what I will focus on is the wonderful new added characters we are getting in this series although I miss the friendships and the family that they had to leave behind I also love the new additions especially Gretta, Hannah and Grace. Rayne can go jump off a cliff somewhere without his powers for all I care......

I will say I am MAD at the author for leaving me on that CLIFFHANGER, but I will forgive her if she writes quickly and get the next book out asap......

I was so excited to continue Vela and Linc’s story!

When Vela and Linc find themselves targeted by an Elemental Extremist group, they decide to run for their lives and find sanctuary at a secret community located in the woods of Canada. But crossing different elemental territories to get to this safe haven proves to be life threatening and difficult, Vela and Linc just barely make it there alive.

Vela and Linc arrive to the secret community to find an elemental uptopia. There are mixed elemental couples, children with multiple elemental gifts, and all the elementals live in harmony together. In Vela’s eyes, it’s a dream come true and a glimpse of what the world could be. When one of the mixed elementals, a young man named Rayne, sets his eyes on Vela, and is determined to win her over, regardless of her bond with Linc. And Vela, though she loves Linc with all her heart, doesn’t know what to do or think.

I enjoyed the growing love triangle dynamic between Vela, Linc, and Rayne. There are moments where Rayne makes Vela really look at herself and see her relationship with Linc from an outside perspective and there are moments where Linc reminds Vela of the strong intangible bond that they have. However, I think it was vital for both Rayne and Linc to have some kind of connection with Vela, as both show instances of their imperfections and wrong decisions, even though both have compassion and goodness in their hearts. Sometimes having competing suitors brings out the best and worst in characters, but it’s so necessary! I also love how relatable and authentic the struggles are that Vela and Linc go through as a couple, and how, through God’s love, they seek to understand and forgive even if it takes some time for each to work out their own inner thoughts and turmoil.

The faith aspects continue to uplift and inspire me, and I am hanging on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next book so I can find out what happens!

I received a complimentary ARC but I am leaving my review and thoughts happily and voluntarily 🧡

I loved this book. It was a roller-coaster of emotions, including irritation(for spoiler-y reasons), but so good. A solid second book, with a great setup that will keep you begging for the next book. The characters are very real, raw, and interesting, the relationships between couples and friends are beautifully written, and I can't wait to read more!

✨TORCH✨ARC Review

Sofia did it again, but I think even better?! This sequel to Terra was full of even more romance and witty banter plus a love triangle (which I hate, but am here for). Once again, there is so much virtue and innocence between Linc and Vela- even though I wish she’d just commit and marry him already!!!! But I understand the focus and lessons Sofia is making through the story of patience, purity, and prayer.
Torch definitely had my heart in tatters the whole time, looking forward to every moment between Vela and Linc, and I’m eager for the next installment after that CLIFFHANGER! I’m hopeful Vela will set some clear boundaries with Rayne and we will see our happily ever after! But I know with that ending reveal, we’ve got some action coming up!
I love the fated mates, how respectful Linc is (he’s my guy), and the precious found family they discover.
Sofia has done a great job stepping into a niche that I love (Romantasy) while sticking to her values and spreading the gospel. Christian fantasy is a genre that is newly being tapped into and I love it!

Will making it to safety just mean more danger?

I got hooked on the Elemental Series while reading the first book, Terra, a few months ago. There was something about Sofia Simpson's blend of the familiar with the fantastical that captured my imagination. And, I'll be the first to admit that I can really get into a good YA fantasy novel like Torch and its predecessor.

Torch is the second Elemental Series novel and it turned out to be every bit as good as the first one – and even ends on a cliffhanger, too, just like that one did. Not every succeeding novel in a series can pull off the same strength and quality as the previous one or ones but Sofia Simpson seemed to do just that with this one. Not only is the Elemental aspect continued but it is carefully built upon and expanded.

I found the story to be full of adventure, clean romance, and some pretty good messages about boundaries, respect, honesty, and simply growing up. Torch also affirms family and faith in a realistic fantasy setting.

As I'm sure you can tell, I did enjoy the book and after that ending I'm a little desperate to find out where Sofia Simpson will be taking her characters next and what will befall them along the way...

** I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review**

Sofia does a wonderful job combining elements of faith with fantasy. Her books are encouraging, and they are perfect for teens and young adults.

Book 2 picks up where book 1 left off. Vela and Linc are on their journey to the remote secret community in Canada. Along the way, Vela learns how to trust in God and His plans for her life. She meets many new people, and she learns about the importance of accepting others, no matter our differences.

I enjoyed learning more about the elementals and also the world building in Book 2. Be aware...this book ends on a cliffhanger!

I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.

So for this one, I originally was going to give it 3.5 stars, then the more I sat on it, the more I found problems.
PROS: faith content. It was good and was a common theme. I liked how it wasn't just here or there but throughout the whole book. I also liked the idea of them going to find a group of people where they would be safe.
Cons: way too much romance. Some of it was sweet and good, but then there would be parts that were over the top and parts that didn't need to happen. Anger issues, there was a lot of that. And one thing that keeps getting rehashed: Vela needs time to decide, but she keeps putting herself in positions that get her emotionally attached so is going to be nigh impossible to walk away. She got on my nerves.
I liked Book 1 better, and I honestly wouldn't reread this one. Too much stuff that I am not a fan of. Good faith content, but the romance was pushing my comfort zone.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is book 2 in the An Elemental Series and cannot be read as a standalone. The book's blurb gives you a good idea of what to expect, though be aware there is a brief scene with a kidnapping attempt made and the violence level is pg-13. Torch is told through Vela's pov and is a great sequel that will have you intrigued to find out what's to come.

Just like in Terra: An Elemental Series, the romance is a clean one consisting of kisses that don't get too heated, and focus more on emotions, and no foul language was used. There's also faith elements included throughout the book and, as long as you don't have negative feelings towards God, then you won't be bothered by the themes of the story. Of course, believers will be very satisfied with the messages presented. I particularly enjoyed how we continued to see Vela trust God and his plan.

It's always difficult to write reviews for fantasy romances, especially sequels, but the story began where Terra ended and it didn't slow down until the end. Vela and Linc's journey was full of trials for them - both externally and internally. As their feelings for each other grew and they spent time together, they had to discuss boundaries and trust each other even more than they already did. They didn't always say or do the perfect thing but I liked seeing their mistakes and how they deal with the aftermath. I liked how they, especially Vela, communicated what they were feeling. While they both had fears to work through, I liked how Linc continued to be protective of Vela and let her know that he cared about her. I liked how even when Vela wasn't completely sure about things she tried to be understanding and be careful in her considerations.

I'm going to admit that love triangles aren't my favorite and they way that Rayne disregarded Vela and Linc's relationship wasn't something I cared for. However, his presence gave Vela more thoughts about her relationship with Linc and their bond that she needed and I liked reading her thought process as she dealt with her emotions. Though we don't have Linc's pov, through his conversations with Vela, you could tell how he was reflecting on his actions.

The action was evenly paced and perfect in terms of keeping reader's attention. There were a couple of times when I was nervous for Linc and Vela wondering what they would encounter on their trip to the sanctuary as well as once they arrived there. I liked the community of the Polar Bear Lodge and seeing them work together as one. The new characters that we met were mostly sweet, especially Andy, Hannah, and Gretta. There will be twists you won't expect and that cliffhanger will definitely have you waiting for the next book in the series.

Sofia Simpson's Torch is a rich tapestry that interweaves dystopian elements, Christian faith, and the human condition. Her novel is a profound exploration of the strength and limitations of both divine and human power. Simpson navigates through a landscape marked by mutants and extraordinary abilities to underscore a universal truth: our inherent need for God's presence and guidance in our lives.

The narrative underscores the perennial struggle between power and temptation, focusing on Vela's journey. Vela, the protagonist, symbolizes the quintessential battle against temptation and the importance of faith in overcoming personal challenges. Through her, Simpson articulates the idea that genuine strength lies not in supernatural abilities or human willpower but in our relationship with God.

Moreover, Simpson's emphasis on self-reflection before judgment serves as a poignant reminder of the biblical principle of focusing on one’s own faults before criticizing others. This narrative arc not only reinforces the Christian ethos but also promotes a broader message of empathy and understanding in human relationships.

The motif of forgiveness is another crucial element Simpson deftly handles in her novel. Through the lens of unforgiveness, she reveals the toxicity that it breeds in the soul, pointing out the transient nature of human life and the urgent need to reconcile with one another. Her narrative eloquently echoes God's commandment of forgiveness, thereby illustrating the liberation it brings to the human spirit.

Lastly, Torch brings to light the fragile nature of human relationships and the inevitability of mistakes. Simpson delves into the dynamics of romantic relationships to portray that true love transcends human imperfections. It is a reminder that, despite the pain and betrayal, love endures, mirroring the unconditional love of God for humanity.

In conclusion, Sofia Simpson's Torch is not merely a story set in a dystopian world; it is a profound exploration of faith, power, forgiveness, and love. Simpson successfully uses a fictional backdrop to convey timeless truths about the human experience in relation to divine principles, making Torch a significant contribution to Christian dystopian literature.

4,5 stars rounded to 5

This book picks up right where book 1 left us hanging. Yes, it absolutely did, so I was happy I didn’t have to wait for a new release but could just jump into the adventure.

Book 1 started a bit slower and the real adventure only started towards the end, but this second book in the series is so full of action, there is barely a second to breathe for Vela and Linc.

While I did enjoy the first book, I definitely liked this one more and the adventure is not only fast paced but so well written, that even if it was a bit black and white (like why are they meeting so many hostile people who are full of hate and violent for no reason at all on their way?) I was just sucked into the action and couldn’t put the book down. It really had me on the edge of my seat and I kept turning pages until I just couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer.

I came to like Vela a bit more although I still don’t see what’s so special about her. ( So this is actually the reason I’m not giving a full five stars. I’m not bonding with the main character and I actually should after two full length novels…)

I loved that her faith and character growth continue and she realizes more and more that her prejudices were just that and not a justified dislike of all other elementals.

There were some pretty great moments between her and Linc but like I said, it’s the adventure plot that kept me engaged throughout the whole book and I’m really happy to be able to jump right into book three, since the next cliffhanger awaits at the end of Torch!

* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.

It has been a hot minute since I have been so caught up and invested in a young adult story and series. This is one that is really good, better with each book, and I can hardly wait for the third in the series.

Where the first book really showed us the dynamics and powers and explained to us the elementals world and how they coexist in ours, this one takes our two main characters, Vela and Linc, into Canada as they search for a secluded community of elementals where they will have safety. Hopefully. That is the plan anyway. Especially since they may be key to the prophesy being fulfilled. However, they have quite a time getting there and when they finally arrive things are still strained at the settlement. Will they be able to survive what is coming and can they stick together?

While reading this Vela asks at least once a question similar to, 'why can't we just get along?'. I have asked that too in regard to the world we live in, and it would be so much simpler and safer if we did. But just like here, in Vela's world there are agitators that have their purposes for keeping the elemental war going. There are some surprises along the way, they are fighting for their very lives and for the chance to live in peace. Vera and Linc's relationship, even though they are soul mates, is tested a plenty. Be prepared, the story does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to what will happen in book three.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

🔥Torch🔥 by Sofia Simpson is the second book in her Christian YA Elemental Fantasy Series with details such as:

✨ Fated Mates
🏕️ Off-Grid Cabin Life
🌲 Beautiful Forest Setting
🪓 Real Off-Grid Survival tips
🧡 Twilight- Love Triangle
🪶 Native Representation
❄️ Minty Clean Romance

🕊️ Deep Themes of Faith
🐾 Doberman Companion
🔥 Overcoming Prejudices
🌬️ Intense Elemental Battles

🧡 This story has been amazing so far, and I especially love the world building in Torch, Sofia takes us to some amazing places! The off grid community The Polar Bear Lodge was my favorite! I loved that there were Native Canadians represented in her book because that happens to be a part of my own personal heritage, and you never see it mentioned in books, let alone a Christian fantasy!! If you love idea of cozy, off grid living in the picturesque woods, then just wait until you get to the Bonfire Dance under the stars ✨

🔥 It was so refreshing to read a christian fantasy that had such an interesting & immersive elemental magic system! The descriptions of their different powers is absolutely fascinating!! The lush vivid imagery of how they work is absolutely enchanting and the elemental battle scenes are SO intense you won't be able to put the book down!!

🧡 The way Sofia portrayed the romance in this book is perfect for YA believers, showing what it looks like to honor God & each other by setting boundaries against temptation!

🔥 If you’re a Christian looking for a series with clean romance, elemental powers and fantasy adventures that is not only God honoring but will also strengthen your faith in God...Then you need to add Torch to your TBR! Sofia Simpson has created an interesting fantasy series. Some people, who are not considered “human” in the book, have certain powers based on elements - fire, water, nature, and others. Humans do not understand the “elementals” and many elementals don’t trust elementals with a different power. However, the main characters, Vela and Linc, have different powers but have become bonded.
Unfortunately, I have not read the first book in the story so I often felt like I was “missing something” while I was reading. There are things I still don’t completely understand about the plot even after reading the book. I think this could have been helped if the book had started with a “previously in…” section that gave a bit of a synopsis of the first book. If I had been able to fully comprehend the information I was missing, I probably would have given this book a 5 star rating. It is well written and enjoyable once I stopped trying to figure out what I was missing.
I would recommend Torch for a K-12 Christian school library, provided you got the whole series and encouraged students to read the book in order. The book is appropriate for high schoolers.

This book was a good read. Which to be honest is a surprise to me as I really don’t like Sci fi or most fantasy but this book was really easy to follow and kept me reading because I had to know what happened. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. This book really ended with a cliff hanger. I recommend reading the first book first. This book is a clean read but it does have moments that the kissing scenes end up
the couple talking about not doing things until they are married. If you have read the first book, this book might have you wishing for a different outcome then you wanted when you finished that book. Are Vela and Linc going to be a couple forever or is the new guy going to end their relationship. To be continued in book 3. I recommend this series for readers who
liked fantasy and even for those that don’t really like fantasy. This book ever has Spiritual truths within its pages.

Here's book two in this series. I like the name of this book, Torch, and it picks up where the first book left off. I recommend reading the series in order though. Vela's healing gift is crucial for those around her, but there's so much darkness and danger, that it's possible she could be used in ways she doesn't want to be. Reliance on God is imperative with this and I was so happy to see so much faith worked into this story. It has so many emotions that pull you during the story, and of course, also the romance triangle because having reached the perfect place to be, Vela and Linc now have Rayne. Rayne is quite interested in Vela and doesn't see her as she sees herself or her connection to Linc and it's mind-opening and perspective-altering for her as well as giving us the deep sides of our characters and this romance. It's still a lot of a cliffhanger and I need the next book.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for my digital copy of this book. This review is my own and a positive review is never required.

I had the pleasure of reading the begging to An Elemental Series by Sofia Simpson, Terra. I was instantly intrigued by Vela and Linc' and was interested in continuing their story in the second installment, Torch. It does not disappoint. It was full of action and adventure that kept engaged from start to finish. Even though I am not a huge fan of this genre, I thought it was great and gives me a reason to go outside my comfort zone sometimes so I do not miss out on a good read.
I am giving Torch four and a half stars. I recommend it for fans and readers who enjoy reading clean Young Adult Christian Fantasy. I am curious to see what will happen with Vela and Linc in book three from An Elemental Series, Tempest.
I received a digital copy of Sofia Simpson's Torch from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Torch by Sofia Simpson is a Young Adult Christian Fantasy novel. With its twists and turns the Young Adult Christian fantasy novel takes the reader on a journey involving Extremists and those trying to escape them.

The author creates memorable characters, especially Vela. I love watching the author build the relationship between Vela and her intended Linc.

My one complaint about this story stems from the rather abrupt way the story ends. It leaves you impatiently waiting for the next boo

So, if you are looking for Young Adult Christian Fantasy, check out Torch by Sofia Simpson.

Oh, I am enjoying this journey with Linc and Vera. This is about elementals and the challenges they face from the normal humans. I cannot wait to see what happens next in the last book. Will Link find her? What will they find out about her parents? Is she? Will her child be? So many questions that need answering. This is good solid clean CF. Love this and feel it’s great for both teen and adult.

This was a fun and clean science fiction/ fantasy read. Linc and Vela were great together and usually I am not a fan of love triangles but I think Rayne really added something to the plot that made it a fun sequel to the first book in the series Terra. I would highly recommend reading that first as this is not a standalone and the events in this book take place right after the first book ends. The cliffhanger at the end of this one makes me very excited for the third book in the series. If you enjoy clean romance and science fiction/ fantasy elements with no spice (beyond kissing) than I would highly recommend this book and its predecessor Terra.

Torch is the second book in the Elemental Series by Sofia Simpson. This book continues the story of Vela Ashcroft and Lincoln Stevenson started in the book Terra. The story continues being told from the viewpoint of seventeen year old Vela who is connected to Linc (Lincoln) by a special Elemental bond. The story follows the pair on their journey to a hidden elemental community and through the changes, surprises, and friendships found there.

The author tells the story through a strong Christian worldview, emphasizing the importance of prayer and relying on and trusting God through struggles. It was woven throughout the story without feeling shoehorned into the text as an afterthought. Sofia Simpson also does a good job of maintaining pace trough both action and emotional scences.
