Of Spindles and Nightfall

Rate this book
Rumpelstiltskin meets The Serpent and the Wings of Night in this spicy, fairy tale retelling.

Never make a deal with a demon—especially the demon arch king.

Aryana, the vampire princess, has spent her life as a weapon in her uncle’s cruel kingdom. But when the demon arch king, Zarathos, steals her away, she is thrust into a world more treacherous than anything she could have imagined.

Zarathos’s presence is suffocating, his dark power intoxicating. He claims she has the ability to turn straw into gold—a lie. But the real truth is far more terrifying. He needs her for the deadly demon trials, and he’ll stop at nothing to bend her to his will.

Bound together by a bargain neither can escape, Aryana must fight for Zarathos in the trials, even while the magnetic pull between them grows with each passing moment. The more time they spend together, the deeper she’s pulled into a world of lust, power, and ruthless peril.

Zarathos will never let her survive the trials. She’s nothing more than a pawn in his plans. But as the fire between them burns hotter, Aryana wonders if the demon king has claimed more than her life—has he taken her heart as well?

Of Spindles and Nightfall is a standalone, dark gothic fantasy romance—a reimagining of the Rumpelstiltskin tale, filled with vampires, demons, and a deadly love that could destroy them both. Perfect for fans of possessive shadow daddies, forbidden passion and dangerous bargains.

4.5 stars! A dark, spicy, retelling of Rumpelstiltskin that will have you turning page after page to see what happens next!

-Enemies to lovers
-Possessive Shadow Daddy with wings, and horns, and a tail...
-Demons & Vampires
-Deadly trials
-Political intrigue
-Touch her & di3
-Dual POV

This fairytale retelling was everything I didn't know I needed! I ate this one up! Not only do we have slow burn and tension and spice, but also lies, secrets, bargains and bonds. At 500 pages, I literally read this in about a day - I was HOOKED!

The play on Rumpelstiltskin was fun, I really enjoyed the demons and vampires - but we also get shape shifters, humans - it's everything I love in a romantasy book!

My only complaint, its a standalone - I want more!!

Highly recommend for any romantasy lovers!

Be prepared for a very dark and spicy story, with a very original take on Rumplestiltskin while still including all of the major elements of the original tale.

I really wasn't sure what to expect out of a retelling with vampires and demons, but I read this so fast because it was impossible to put down. Everything was twisted together so well that it was impossible to put it all together before the end, and both of the main characters were as fantastic as they were blood-thirsty.

Vampires, Demons, and a Rumplestiltskin retelling, not to mention lots of biting, and lots of spice. Of Spindles and Nightful was a great time. Aryana is the vampire princess, and Zarathos is the demon king. And he has wings! There’s some captivity going on, secrets, and demon trials. I found the trials to be an exciting part of the story. It established Aryana and Zarathos’ relationship even more, leading to decisions they don’t anticipate making and a situation they must keep on the down low. Yet, it doesn’t stop them from hooking up every chance they get, even in the most dangerous moments. Those scenes were well worth it because the spice was amazing. Zarathos definitely knows what he is doing. Did I mention there’s biting?

Thank you to MTMC Book Tours and Author J. Ann Curtis for the gifted copy of “Of Spindles and Nightful”. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was an interesting mix of Rumpelstiltskin and The Hunger Games thrown into a fantasy world of demons, vampires and other mythical creatures.

I really enjoyed the main characters, and the side characters who never ceased to surprise me.

It was a little slow to pick up, but at around 25% it really picked up and didn’t slow down.

Aryana is captured and held captive by a Demon King. In order to live she is forced into a bargain with Arch Demon Zarathos, to spin straw into gold and assist with his schemes. She is forced to live through her most vulnerable and painful memories as the demon uses his magic to make the gold, weakening her and causing an accidental mate bond neither of them expected. Now tied to her enemy they must hide their bond and work together to survive the coming demon trials. Aryana must play the part of an unwilling slave and a simple pawn for Zarathos's games as his champion, but their growing attraction to each other threatens to kill them both if discovered.
With blood bargains, betrayals, secrets, and hidden powers, this is an intense journey of survival. Both have endured countless traumas, but together they could save each other and their kingdoms from war.
This dark standalone is a clever Rumpelstiltskin retelling and spicy romance.

I recived an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Of Spindles and Nightfall was such an interesting read! The concept of demon kingdoms battling it out in trials to decide the next Arch King immediately caught my attention. I’ll admit, the writing style took me a little while to settle into, but once the trials began I was hooked. The FMC frustrated me at times with her lack of self-control (she definitely got herself into trouble more than once), but the MMC (Total shadow daddy) made up for it. The ending felt a little rushed, but everything was tied up nicely, and overall I really enjoyed this book. Definitely worth the read if you like dark trials, enemies to lovers, demon intrigue, and a broody MMC.

This romantasy was amazing and fun! Aryana is the vampire princess. Zarathos is the arch demon king. She makes a deal with him for his help spinning straw to gold and ends up being vital to the ensuing trials.

It is a very loose retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. But at its heart, this book has all the best things of a dark romantasy. Enemies to lovers. A little dubcon (really consensual). Winged shadow daddy. Lots of spice.

Probably not for anyone who doesn’t like blood descriptions. But the world created is great with demon kingdoms and humans. Lots of court intrigue. And of course, the trials! They are unique and gory.

Although this is part of a series, it’s completely stand alone. I want to dive into some of the series though!

I loved reading this book! When I had the time to read, I couldn’t put it down. There were a few plot twists that I thoroughly enjoyed and I really enjoyed the character growth with the mmc and fmc.

Lots of blood drinking, biting, and violence with spice towards the second half of the book. This is a dark fantasy retelling of rumpelstiltskin with elements that remind me of the Serpents of Wings and Night.

Fun story! Enjoy that this romance deals with vampires and demons. Plus, I’m so on board when the characters need to go through some trials to survive/fight against the system. Love when there’s action and danger! Like when there’s an enemies to more scenario going on too! Interesting ideas with the story taking inspiration from the Rumpelstiltskin tale. Overall, an entertaining fantasy read!

This book gave me hunger game vibes with Rumpelstiltskin touches.

I loved the characters especially a strong female lead. The storyline really picked up around 30% into the book and then it had me wanting more.

I was silently cheering for side characters and the twists had me hooked.

Definitely recommend reading this if you love a dark twist on fairytales.

I was lucky enough to be chosen to be an ARC reader for this book. When I signed up, I was on board after hearing- Rumpelstiltskin retelling and vampires. I thought it could be a fun read. I had NO idea what I was in store for.

I jumped in and was HOOKED from the first chapter! The FMC is determined but ends up in a sticky situation. The MMC has tricks up his sleeve for her.

Enemies to Lovers
Slow Burn
Trials
Demons and Vampires
Twists and Turns

This story never stops. It is full of adventure in a beautiful world that Curtis creates! No boring scenery or filler space that makes you wait for something to happen in a chapter.
Everything and every character has its purpose, some of which you won't know until the very end. ;)

Grab your copy today and enjoy a Rumpelstiltskin read like you never have before!

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It had similar vibes to the Crown of Nyaxia series, slow burn, spice, character development (although the FMC pissed me off a few times!) and it gave Rumi and Jinu vibes..demon with a tragic back story, made questionable decisions, but ultimately a good guy who would do anything for who he loves. Also, for those who care, I only found one spelling error. which is saying something compared to the usual ARCs I read. I didn't even catch any plot holes. The ONLY thing I will say is that maybe the ending was a tad rushed, but it still all wrapped up nicely and I felt like everything was explained. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely look for more of her work!

ARC read!

Overall I absolutely loved this book! J. Ann Curtis does a great job of creating twists and turns you don't see coming. The story is unique and super interesting, making you want to turn the page and read just one more chapter.

Of Spindles and Nightfall seamlessly brings together a romantic tale with hard truths and a competition to the death to rule the entire demon kingdom - minus the vampires. You see struggles, violence, heartbreak, and past traumas.

4/5 stars only because the writing style is very formal at times and makes it hard to read, especially when it switches from formal to more a casual, natural, flowing style.

Highly recommend!

While this book is marketed as a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, that connection felt surface-level at best. Yes, it opens with the classic “spinning hay into gold” motif, but beyond that, the similarities fade quickly. The story introduces new elements such as mythical creatures, shared memories during spinning, and various twists on familiar lore, but none of it truly captured the spirit of the original fairytale.

Once the initial setup is out of the way, the book shifts into its true focus: a series of deadly trials where demons and other supernatural beings compete to become the next Arch King. In theory, that premise hooked me immediately, but in practice, the execution fell short. It wasn’t bad, exactly, but I found myself struggling to stay engaged.

One major issue was the overemphasis on trauma. The two main characters carry dark pasts, which could have added depth, but the book reminded us of their pain so frequently that it started to feel repetitive rather than meaningful. While a little mystery builds suspense, constant reminders do not.

The romance also felt undercooked. When the characters finally acknowledged their attraction, they went from light flirting to screwing really quick. As someone who loves a good slow burn, I wanted more tension, more buildup, more spark. Instead, it felt like someone flipped a switch from “enemies” to “lovers” without earning it.

The ending crammed in a ton of information all at once, which made it feel rushed and disorienting. Answers came but not with enough clarity or emotional payoff.

All that said, I do like the core concept. The world has potential, and the author clearly has creative ideas. With stronger pacing, more natural romantic development, and a lighter hand on the trauma flashbacks, this could have been a standout. As it stands, it’s an intriguing premise with uneven execution.

This book is a twisted little gem! I was immediately pulled into a world of demon kingdoms, deadly trials, and a very broody Arch Demon who’s basically peak “shadow daddy.” Aryana was a bit infuriating sometimes as she navigated bargains, blood, and her own messy feelings, but honestly, her stubbornness just made the stakes feel higher. The enemies-to-lovers tension with Zarathos was chef’s kiss. Add in some Rumpelstiltskin-inspired magic, spicy romance, and enough danger to keep you turning pages at lightning speed, and you’ve got a dark romantasy that’s messy, thrilling, and oddly addictive. If you like complicated love, deadly trials, and magic that makes your heart race, this is one to spin through!

She had once been the flax, and he the expert spinner, but somewhere along the way, their roles had reversed. Now, he would gladly be a thread woven into her masterpiece.

I am a sucker for a fairytale retelling. And my obsession with Once Upon a Time show also instilled my obsession with all things Rumpelstiltskin. So when I saw the blurb for this dark gothic fantasy romance, I couldn't jump on it fast enough.

I was immediately sucked into the story, though I did wish it was written in first person POV at times.

If you love a true enemies to lovers, this story delivers an epic one with a vampire princess and the arch demon king who she strikes a dangerous bargain with. I immediately loved Aryana and her fierceness. A vampire princess who grew up under her cruel uncles brutality disguised as training, it assured her feelings of being the outsider. Her drive to protect humans was single minded and the more you learn about her past, the more you understand it.

Zarathos kidnaps Aryana and thrusts her in a world even more cruel that her uncle. Stuck in an impossible situation, she strikes a deal with the arch demon for what she thinks may be her salvation, but she doesn't even know the true dark depths of.

I will say, if you're expecting a full fairy tale retelling, this isn't that. It's more of a nod to the original fairy tale but with its own unique twist that I really enjoyed. You have two equally tortured characters who don't know just how alike they are.

This story is dark and gritty, with parts being truly gruesome and hard to read. The reader is thrust in the middle of a vicious demon trial, where only the strong survive. It's kill or be killed and Aryana proves to be a strong contender. I loved watching Zarathos fall for her almost as much as I enjoyed her fall for him, despite their best efforts not to and being enemies.

The story is a slow burn but has plenty of sizzle mixed into a dark and gritty world building, action, secrets, betrayals, battles, and deals signed in blood.

It was an entertaining read that kept me turning the pages well into the night!

A MUST READ!

⚠️ WARNING - Never make a deal with a dangerous and ruthless arch king demon. Never seal a bargain. And DON’T bind yourself in a Bloodbound mate bond to the enemy. ⚠️

The cover is absolutely gorgeous and this was an amazing retelling of Rumpelstiltskin! Both , Aryana and Zarathos shared a traumatic , painful and brutal childhood and upbringing, both had the strongest of instincts and the extreme thirsts for need , survival and freedom. Both willing to sacrifice anything for that .. Both had to trust each other when facing the deadly trials and avoiding death which followed them at every move and decision.

I felt for Aryana , desperate to protect humans , desperate to escape the powerful grip of her uncle , desperate to eliminate all the control , blackmail, exploitation and coercion that was forced upon her . Two tortured souls needed to trust eachother in order to survive and being forced to share vulnerable moments . A display of those moments could be used against them . And love? That was deemed a weakness, a dangerous emotion that should never be put on display. Instead they were to show their power , strength and control

Aryana and Zarathos had an undeniable chemistry , heated passion and desire . Both shrouded in darkness, both battled that intense pull but couldn’t stray from their own goals . He couldn’t risk his secrets being discovered. He needed to win the trials to hold his title as Arch King, losing wasn’t an option, losing meant death.

Zarathos was dangerous , possessive , obsessive and very protective of “ his wife”.. and Aryana, she was strong , fierce and determined , she was a fighter ! The build up , the twists , the betrayals and lies/ deceit coming to the surface was EVERYTHING AND MORE!! I was placed in that moment , right in the heart of their words and right in the bloody arena and kingdom.

This was an intense and gripping read with an amazing world building , details and pacing . I was feral for the imbalance of power and the ache of the slow burn . Not only was this book plot heavy but it was very character driven which gave that perfect balance to their story.

If you love a fairytale retelling with a twist this a MUST READ ! If you crave dark romance then you need to dive into this dark story of magic, darkness and spells . Talking of spells , I’m pretty sure this author has placed one in her books cos she could NEVER have me hate her villains

“Of Spindles and Nightfall” is a spicy, dark, gothic romantasy written by J Ann Curtis. It is the third book in the standalone series called “Villain’s Kiss.” A Rumpelstiltskin retelling that seamlessly meets “The Serpent and The Wings of Night,” it is a five-star story full of secret bargains, demons, deadly trials, and magic.

⚔️ What to Expect ⚔️
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️, Secret Bargains, Deadly Trials, Possessive Shadow Daddy, “My wife”, Slow burn, Warrior FMC, and Horn and Tail Play

I loved that Curtis asks the question, “Can demons love [like humans can]?” and navigates both Aryana and Zarathos’ experiences in past love as they perhaps unintentionally forge their own. Learning acceptance, self-love, and falling in love, our MCs do the worst amongst certain death and secrets. We see love grow differently here, serving as a reminder that love isn’t always sweet and kind; sometimes it’s all-consuming and forged in finding light in the darkness. Devotion becomes selfish and selfless. It was beautiful. Zarathos learns to love himself, and Aryana realizes what love she deserves.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️- Aryana and Zarathos are STEAMMMY. Their descent into love is wrought with steam, spice, dominance, tail play, horn play, and masking scents (this scene 🥵).

The world-building in this book was incredible. Curtis creates an entire world from the ground up, utilizing creatures both old and new in a way that feels so unique and outstanding. The government structure of the Demon Alliances (and in part, the Trials) was illustrated on the first page, so you can see how they trickle down, which helped me as I went back and forth to it.

The Demon Trial sequences were SO COOL. The action sequences were vivid, fast-paced, and descriptive. I felt my heart race as they navigated each trial and competed against opponents vying for their death. No trial was the same, and it was extraordinary to read.

There are twists and turns throughout this story, where nothing is as it seems. There were twists for almost all of the major themes in this book: political intrigue, love, and Zarathos’ past. No one is exactly how they appear, and it leaves you wondering about their true intentions and who they really are.

The ending wasn’t rushed or forced, but exactly what it needed to be. There were no loose ends to tie up or any questions left behind. The Rumplestiltskin reference at the end was great 😂

I absolutely loved this read and look forward to reading the other books!

description

what an amazing read🤩🤩 it was action packed as well as intrigue from the very start and was a non-stop thrill ride to the very end with the twists I didn't see that coming!🤩 the story was captivating, well written world building and informative characters, Zarathos is the demon arch-king who maintains his throne and peace between regions with his bargains. although his words don't match his actions, he cares so deeply for Aryana🥰 Aryana is a vampire princess who simply wants to be free from the people who constantly manipulate her, who would have thought that the one who brought her to peace was her own arch enemy, the demon arch-king✨ it was such a beautiful love story dealing with grief and trauma between the main characters. and I thought this book was just going to be a cozy retelling, but unexpectedly it turned into so much more🤩 I'm hooked on this book from the very first start!😍 very good storyline, an awesome retelling with such interesting world building and just the right amount of spice, read it and you won't be disappointed!✨👌

"I don't know how it happened. It's like a part of me was ripped away, and I'm left here, struggling to hold myself together. To lose you, Aryana, would be like tearing down the sky and watching the world crumble beneath me. It would ruin me. My purpose, my reason. It all begins and ends with you. You are everything to me. You are my weakness."
"Without you, I'm just... nothing. I can't—I won't let that happen."
She stepped close and ran her fingers through his long, silken hair. "You needn't worry. Your heart is safe with me."

When Aryana was trying to free the human prisoners held by her own fiancé, she got kidnapped which forced her to make a bargain with the demon arch king to be free, but the bargain she made make her have to take part in a deadly demons trials that threatened her life and possibly make her had to betray her own people.

💖💖Huge thanks to J. Ann Curtis for including me again on her ARC team, it's an honor and privilege to me. All opinions are my own💖💖

Wow, this was a ride and a half. 4.5 dark, angsty, sexy, shadowy stars.

I wasn’t sure what to expect for this one. The synopsis and reviews were promising, but as a mood reader I put it off a bit because I knew it’d be dark. I was in a reading slump and decided to dive in, and boy am I glad I did (but also now need to read a cozy low stakes breezy book 😅).

We follow Aryana, vampire princess with a soft spot for humans, through her dangerous deadly bargain with demon king Zarathos as his warrior in the demon trials to maintain his throne. Aryana is a decent FMC, selfless to a fault, smart, brave, skilled; she wasn’t too impulsive, only putting herself in a couple dangerous situations. She made me want to root for her, and I ached for her traumatic past and her continuously harrowing circumstances. She was put through the wringer and then some, and still maintained her compassion and goals. She showed Zarathos understanding despite how he treated her, and tried to see the larger picture.

Zarathos was such a treat. He started off with very rough edges, and his cold callous treatment of Aryana was hard to stomach early on. He is riddled with trauma and self loathing, and doesn’t believe he’s worthy of anything good. He battles identity and morality issues, and watching his defenses crumble around Aryana was so satisfying. His slow realization that they were more alike than different, and his subtle ways of saving her from pain made him layered and complex. Their dynamic was a true enemies to lovers, and both had ill intent for a while. Once the spice started though… hello shadows, 🩸 and ⛓️ 😏🥵

This world was dark. The demons here aren’t the sexy underworld gods in slick suits, they are monsters who treat others as such. This book has torture, maiming, degradation, and abuse. These demons have little respect for life and no empathy, and it made for a tense and dark read. The trials were well written and intense, not glossed over but very centric scenes to the story. Their danger had my heart pounding, and forced our MCs to make surprising decisions regarding each other.

This was a pretty heart-pounding read, I felt like my muscles were tense until about 70% when I finally had a second to breathe (it didn’t last though lol). I wish we had even more romance but I think the slow burn of their emotional connection made sense for the characters. Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting an intense and unique retelling in a dark world.

Smouldering, enchanting, a tale of redemption. This dark romantic standalone Rumpelstiltskin inspired story, complete with demon battles to win a kingdom and delicious dark spice, will have you in a chokehold!

We follow vampire princess, Aryana, a vampire fighting her very nature, trying to defend and save humans. This leads her to be captured by the demon arch King, Zarathos. Aryana enters into a bargain with Zarathos to serve as his champion in the upcoming demon trials, fierce and deadly trials designed to crown the new arch king. In exchange, Aryana asks for Zarathos to protect the humans from being mercilessly mistreated by the demons.

This story is wonderfully character driven. I loved how many layers Zarathos had under his facade of ruthlessness. Aryana has a heart of gold but has been traumatised by anyone she’s ever loved and trusted. The slow burn between these two who accidentally become bloodbound is so delicious! The way they fight their feelings as they try and fight to win each battle of the trials. The pay off is exquisite when they finally have a “f*ck it” moment and throw all caution to the wind. Brilliantly executed paranormal dark romance. Bravo JA ❤️‍🔥🫶🏼

The pacing is really fun and quite fast paced. I loved all the action and scheming. The world building is dark and moody, suitable for a demon world. Most of the action takes place in the arch king’s castle, complete with a secret tower with its own spindle machine to turn thread into gold.

The original elements of the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin were expertly woven in to the plot. The central idea of bargains granted by Zarathos, favours for a terrible price is a really interesting element. It is a bargain that brings Aryana and Zarathos, two tortured souls, together and allows Aryana to face her fears and her past.

You will enjoy this book if you love:

Let us make a bargain…

Aryana is a vampire princess, desperate to be more like the humans, creatures capable of selflessness and love. Sadly that will never be her lot in life, she’s one of the many demons that grace the world.
But by an unfortunate twist of fate, while saving a group of humans from capture and torture, she herself is captured.
Zarathos, the Arch Demon King has captured Aryana for his own nefarious means. Zarathos needs Aryana to be his Kalator, champion, in the upcoming deadly demon trials!
Can she escape with her life from his deadly bargains or will both Aryana and Zarathos find out more about themselves and each other during their forced partnership?!

I honestly didn’t know much about this book going into it except that it was a Rumplestiltskin retelling and that it had a stunning cover. And honestly why on earth I’d be possessed to read a Rumplestliltskin retelling I’ll never know, I despised that fairy tale as a child! But….. I freaking LOVED this story! It was a wild rollercoaster I never wanted to get off. It’s a standalone book but so much happens you honestly feel like you’ve read a series but also don’t feel it’s long or drags in any way.

The pacing is perfection. The balance between the character development, world building, violence and romance is exact!
If anything I just wanted more of Aryana and Zarathos!!!! Zarathos is weirdly very sexy, even though I know he has wild horns and a tail! And Aryana is a no nonsense, kickass MFC.
In fact Aryana is the powerhouse in this story and Zarathos is probably more of the heart.

Anyway no more secrets reveal, read it yourself!
Have all your childhood traumas about Rumplestiltskin washed away!

✨Of Spindle and Nights by j. ann curtis ✨
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
.
.
Of Spindle and Nights is a dark fantasy romance that completely pulled me in from the start. The story follows Aryana, a vampire with a tragic past — her father was killed by her lover, and her cruel uncle made her life miserable. Despite everything, she’s kind and brave, especially when it comes to protecting humans. I loved how she fought to save human children and women, showing her true strength and heart.

Then there’s Zarathos, the Demon Arch King. He also carries a painful past — his father erased his real name from memory, and he had to kill his mother for reasons tied to fate and duty. When he kidnaps Aryana to strike a bargain, everything changes. What starts as an enemies-to-lovers setup turns into a deep, emotional bond. Their blood connection adds a fascinating layer to their relationship.

I especially loved how both Aryana and Zarathos would risk everything for each other. Zarathos gives up his throne, his power, and even his life to protect her, while Aryana sacrifices just as much in return. The Trial scenes were intense and full of emotion, showing their devotion and strength.

The book is filled with betrayal, sacrifice, and love that defies every boundary. Aryana’s emotional strength and Zarathos’s loyalty made them one of my favorite fantasy couples.

If you love dark fantasy, enemies-to-lovers romance, and stories where love is both a curse and a salvation, you’ll definitely enjoy this book.

Rumpelstiltskin meets The Serpent and the Wings of Night in this spicy, fairy tale retelling.

Never make a deal with a demon – especially the demon arch king.

Zarathos's presence is not only suffocating, but his dark power is intoxicating as well. He claims that she can turn straw into gold. This is nothing more than a lie. But, the truth is far more terrifying. He needs her for the deadly demon trials, and he's going to stop at nothing to bend Aryana to his very will.

Finally bound together by a bargain neither one of them can escape, Aryana must fight for Zarathos in the trials, even as this magnetic pull between them grows with every passing moment. The more time they spend together, the deeper she's pulled into a world of lust, power, and ruthless peril.

Zarathos is never going to let Aryana survive the trials. All she is to him is a pawn in his plans. But as the fire between them burns ever hotter, Aryana wonders if the demon king has claimed more than just her life – has he claimed her heart as well?

Of Spindles and Nightfall is a standalone, dark gothic fantasy romance—a reimagining of the Rumpelstiltskin tale, filled with vampires, demons, and a deadly love that could destroy them both. Perfect for fans of possessive shadow daddies, forbidden passion, and dangerous bargains.

Of Spindle and Nightfall An Enemies-to-Lovers Rumpelstiltskin Fairy Tale Dark Romance by J. Ann Curtis. I just fell in love with the fun and amazing romantasy.

Vampire princess Aryana makes a deal with arch demon king Zarathos to gain his help in spinning straw into gold which ends up being vital in the trials that follow.

Of Spindles and Nightfall takes the basis of Rumpelstiltskin and retells it in its most bare bones. The heart of this story has all of the best things though, it's truly a dark romantasy, enemies-to-lovers, has a bit of dubcon that's truly consensual, add in a gorgeous winged shadow daddy, and of course, you have all the spice you can handle.

One of the things that I love about the spice that J. Ann has included in this book was that it wasn't included just for the sake of having spice in this book. The spice was not only detailed but it was intricate to the plot and helped to move it forward. And every scene definitely delivered.

I will be honest and say that this book isn't for those who don't enjoy the descriptions of blood. But, J. Ann Curtis did such an amazing job in creating this world, creating the stunning shadow daddy demon king, and all the other well-developed characters you can't help but fall in love with. There is so much court intrigue that pulls you in. And of course, the trials that keep you on the edge of your seat wondering who is going to survive. This is a unique yet gory story.

The plot was well developed and well thought out and both of our MCs have had to face their own traumas and their own betrayals. Yet, they have both managed to maintain their own compassion for others, even though they have been forced to hide that compassion because of the demon world in which they have been living.

It's actually in the last few chapters of this book that have your heart racing, the plot twists and turns piling up, and you find yourself sitting up on the edge of your seat and suddenly you find yourself trying to not rush through the last few chapters to find out how everything is going to come together and how the book is going to finally end. By the end of the book I found that it was truly really well put together, and I really loved the way that J. Ann Curtis wrote this retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.

I can't wait to read the next instalment of this series even though Of Spindles and Nightfall is a standalone. I now find myself having to go back and read the first two books in this series and I am looking forward to reading whatever J. Ann Curtis writes next.

Of Spindles and Nightfall by J. Ann Curtis
4.5/5 stars

Cannot express how much I loved this book! It was so well written and the story grabbed my attention from chapter 1. I struggled to put it down when I had the chance to read. So if you LOVE shadow daddies, dangerous bargains and forbidden steamy passion with lots of twists and turns this book is the one for you. YOU MUST GIVE IT A READ.

Rumpelstiltskin meets The Serpent and the Wings of Night in this spicy, fairytale retelling- that is how the author J. Ann Curtis describes this book, Of Spindles and Nightfall, a standalone dark fantasy romance. There’s vampires, demons, magic, deadly trials and so much more to keep you immersed in a world you wish you could hop into.

Aryana, the badass vampire princess is taken away by Zarathos, the demon arch king everyone thought to be cruel and thrusted into a world full of death and treachery, bound by a bargain neither can escape. Is she a pawn in his plans? Or has the arch demon king claimed even more than her life… her heart as well? Read to find out! I was yelling at Aryana for some of the decisions she made as she was quick to take action without thinking what the outcome of her actions would be, and Zarathos one could say was a simp for her but overall it fit within the storyline and in my opinion found this book worth the hype.

Aryana Vampire Princess gets kidnapped (by a multitude of demon factions) while doing a good deed.

The demon trials decide who is to be the Arch King of all the demon territories where humans are slaves.

There is a whole lot of an info dump within the first 4% (15 page of the book).

However if you can get past the massive info dump right at the beginning. The plot of the story unfolds wonderfully. I was worried at first. But like I said get through the info dump and the story unravels masterfully. However, the Rumpelstitskin plot line was a little odd.

Aryanna is trying to do better, be a good demon and help the humans. But honestly during the trials she goes about everything in the wrong way at the wrong time. And the only things she seems to do is make her situation so much worse, and she not thinking clearly.

Key points in no particular order:
- earth demons
- air demons
- underworld demons
- Spirit demons
- Vampires
- Human Slaves
- Deal with the Shadow demon king
- kidnapping and captivity
- Trials and Games
- Emotional Gaslighting/ @-buse
- Consensual Non-Con

I have waited a year for this book. I have read a bunch of this authors books and loved every one of them. This one was no different. As soon as I knew she was writing a Rumplestiltskin retelling, I was chomping at the bit for it. Ever since I watched OUAT (Once Upon A Time) I have been obsessed with Rumplestiltskin, so knowing there was a book coming with him in it, I needed to read it. And I was not disappointed at all. To be honest, it took a minute to get into this story, but once I did, I was GRIPPED. Until I turned the last page, I could not put the book down. And throw a vampire princess in the mix? yes. And make the arch king a shadow daddy? again, yes. Make it a suspenseful enemies to lovers, slow burn with twists and turns you didn't see coming? yes, yes, yes. And then add in an accidental blood bond marking them as mates? And then add a mysterious hidden secret part of Zarathos' bloodline? Seriously, I couldn't have asked for a better retelling. Yes it may have been a slow burn, but when it finally came, the spice definitely SPICED. *chefs kiss* I definitely recommend reading this book if any of what I said grabbed your attention.

This is a Rumpelstiltskin reimagining with vampires and demons. Aryana is a vampire princess who has spent her life as a weapon for her cruel uncle. However, one day she is stolen away into a new world of demons and trials when taken by the arch demon king, Zarathos. To save her life, he claims she has the ability to turn straw into gold and they enter into a bargain. Zarathos needs her help to enter into the demon trials, but will their bargain be for more than their lives, but their hearts as well?

🍂Thoughts:
You guys? I devoured the book in one sitting!! I ate up Aryana and Zarathos’ banter and interactions. This is an enemies-to-lovers story with some strong forced proximity, two of my favorite tropes and I was salivating for it! Zarathos may have played like he wanted to do away with Aryana, but he was touch her and 💀 from first meeting. I enjoyed getting both POVs so you really got both of their thoughts and perspectives throughout the book. There were some crazy twists at the end I wasn’t ready for! Highly recommend if this seems like your vibe! There are some dark themes, so check trigger warnings if needed! 🫶🏻🖤✨

Thank you to the author for the e-arc 🫶🏻

Of Spindles and Nightfall is a fast-paced, dark romantasy, enemies-to-lovers take on Rumpelstiltskin. It’s filled with blood and gore especially throughout the trials - think an R-rated Hunger Games among demons, a vampire princess and lots of spice.

Aryana, a badass vampress fighter, is captured while trying to free humans from captivity. She ends up making a deal with the demon arch king, Zarathos, to help her spin straw into gold so she can stay alive.

Zarathos is the ultimate shadow daddy, current king of all the demon kingdoms and is borderline terrifying with that forked tongue, horns and tail. Infamous for his dangerous bargains, there is more to him than meets the eye.

In exchange, she is his captive and has to take part in the deathly demon trials with him against all types of terrifying creatures from the other kingdoms - a minotaur, half giant, abaddon, werewolf, imp, troll, siren and a basilisk, so that he can remain ruler.

I’ll definitely be checking out J.Ann Curtis’ other work!

Admittedly, I didn't know much about what I was getting into when I signed up to read this ARC. I've read two other books from this author and really enjoyed them and her dark take on fairytale retellings, so I figured I'd enjoy this as well.

This story is definitely darker and spicier than the other two books I've read from her! But one thing I also really enjoy about her books is that it's not just spice for spice's sake, but that there's a detailed, intricate plot to the story. And this one definitely delivered in that regard!

I really enjoyed the plot, and that we have two MCs who both have to face their traumas and betrayals, yet have maintained their compassion for others, even as they have to hide it because of the demon world in which they live.

Those last few chapters had me racing through to find out how it ended as all the plot twists started piling on. It was all really well put together, and I really enjoyed the story!

⚠️Cursing, including F. Several trigger warnings.

Thanks so much to the author for the chance to ARC read!
