Raised from birth to be a Queen, Alene enjoys the challenges of leading the Veyns. As she wrests economic power from the long-established Trade Temple, she digs deep to discover the balance between compromise and power, forming an entirely new government and trade paradigm in the process.
When the nearby town of Veynsport is annexed by Ivonia, Queen Alene must act decisively to avoid losing it all. Does her dwarven mentor, Bedwyn Foresight, still have the knack for strategy Alene needs to prevail?
Can her friends arrive in time to help with her predicament? Lord Protector Angus and the mysterious Indaria make their best attempt, as does Captain John. When faced with the choice between the Queen’s life or theirs, what will they do?
Mr. Smith has done it again. This second book about Angus the Dwarf is as endearing and heartfelt as it is plucky and hilarious. Angus takes on new responsibility after his heroism is confirmed and tested anew. His leadership encourages others to stand up for what is right and good, all the while forming alliances and making new friends in the process. I was especially happy with the connection between him and the Elven Mage Indaria. More than once, I snorted at witty banter or awkward responses to more awkward situations. The way comedy is woven into these stories is so honest and everyday, and yet written with a deft hand. Per the normal, Smith is a wordsmith with great themes that make you think about current world events and the leaders who have shaped them. This book is highly recommended for anyone that loves to laugh, go on epic adventures, and connect with quirky characters. This book was so fun, I read through it quickly, and I am eager to read book three.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
