Alright! It took me great deal and time to complete this book, but all of it has been worth the effort. Being an amateur "gymmer" (a term coined by Rujuta in the book), I would never have come to know this much about my body or the way I should work out in my entire lifetime, keeping in view the interest my instructor shows in training me. :)
So, this book is very informative and if you could put this to good use by following what's being said, I guarantee you would never feel the need of a personal instructor ever. This lady knows quite a lot and I am happy I could grasp at least 10% of what she could share. Lastly, the language she has used in the book makes me wonder if she is the lady "Munna Bhai" :) Anyway, considering how tough it is to make a layman understand ABC of his body, I am happy she has done great justice to the content. Overall, a nice, informative read.

I'm giving this book three stars because the wisdom contained in it is a perfect wake up call to Indians to do what very few of them do - exercise correctly. Correctly being the keyword. Diwekar covers basic concepts in colloquial language to get across the importance of strength training, cardio and yoga by explaining energy systems and how they affect the muscles and hence weight and body composition. She also has a section about meal planning for each category, helping the readers understand the importance that food plays in a healthy lifestyle. Concise and correct, this would have been a refreshing read except for……

The language. She tries hard to cater to the general populace in colloquial English interspersed with a generous amount of Hindi, and in the process two things happen. One, it is hard to take her seriously - example, the word "cribbing" is used incorrectly like most Indians do, and "bitching" and abbreviations like "btw" seems to be ok in a book. Two, Hindi words written in English are hilarious if they have a corresponding English meaning that pops to mind first - example "everyone wants to die haste haste" and "matlab" (I'll let you figure these ones out). In the process of trying to reach out to the average Indian, Diwekar forgets one important fact - not all Indians understand Hindi. By being bilingual, I'm just saddened that this pretty nifty book won't reach a large southern Indian population.

There are some very valid criticisms of this book - an undisguised snobbery, a general targeting of the wealthy and elite, etc. But it gets 5 stars from me because RD is committed to everyone's good health, her advice is sensible and (apart from the expensive personal trainers) doable by everyone, and she knows her science. There's a lot of very useful stuff in here about structuring workouts and food habits. I'm going to refer to this book everytime my motivation to workout flags.

This book may targeted for women ; but it is equally good for a person who is serious about fitness . The narration is little extra straightforward and humorous punches but to the point. sometimes author went off the track deliberately to reduce boredom in scientific jargon.
The focus is given on weight and strength training and why only cardio exercise is not effective in improvement of overall health and fight diseases.
we Indians are not much aware about breakup of nutrients, its chemical structure and how they are absorbed and converted into cell structures. Western countries are spending millions on research. They define their daily nutrient intake and catogorise each food items with percentage of nutrients against daily recommendations. This help to make combination of food . By increased awareness we may follow the path soon.
Understanding this difficulty author has given plenty of simple Indian food and its portion we should consume daily.
You can omit some pages where more technical things are described and jump to topics you find interesting .
A good motivation book for fitness.

If you can manage to tolerate the cringeworthy writing style of the author, there is some really valuable information in some sections of the book. If you pick the useful parts from the book and remove all the useless rants and all, the useful info in the book can be reduced to a blog post. But the useful info is really useful. Explanation of all the energy systems of the body, what fuels can our body use and in what situations, importance of strength training, etc. So, if you enjoy Rujuta Diwekar's writing style, you will love this book. And if you hate the writing style but manage to read it, you will gain some valuable knowledge that can help you raise your fitness level. So, I would recommend this book but it could have been so much better if the author had focussed more on educating the audience and less on being arrogant and condescending towards all the professionals like doctors, trainers, nutritionists and amateur runners, cyclists and all those people who take up a sport as a hobby but are not elites.

I think I am one of the fews who have rated this book poorly. I loved Rujuta's earlier books especially, "Dont lose your mind, lose your weight". But she is increasing becoming patronizing in her approach of book writing. Extremely ridiculing way of myth busting, constant use of Bambaiyya Hindi in belittling others, relentless hammering or preaching - it got on nerves this time. It was no fun reading constant ridicule of anything or anyone who may have different ways or opinions on exercise. E.g. As per Rujuta, Marathon running is an activity taken by 40 something just to showoff in office without knowing anything about technique or racquet sport is a recreation activity of only rich Indians who have nothing better to do in their 40s after having earned lot of money! These sections in the book just go on and on ridiculing thousands of people who make an attempt to run marathons! The tone of these sections is like - if you dont have sub 2 hr timing in half marathon, you dont know what you are doing and just showing off. Come on now, no one reaches sub 2 hr before endless efforts put in to start from 1 -2 kms and no one would put hours in running just to show off in office! If you want to make a point about technique, do that via clinical criticism and talk about whats wrong in technique and how to work on it.

In the later sections of the book, i literally skimmed thr' this kind of mindless rant and only read technical sections about exercise, nutrition and technique - which are actually very informational and explained in a manner so that anyone can understand the complexity of the science.

after reading all her books, one can feel undertone of superiority - I am the only exercise physiologist in India who knows this, or telling you this - this and the constant use of hindi is a major distraction.

I am not saying dont buy this book - it has lot of useful information. But i kind of made my mind not to trust everything written in the book and do some trail and error. Unlike earlier book, "Dont lose your mind, lose your weight" - when i believed in the core message of the book.

This is a good book about exercise science written by a professional in the field. The author covers different forms of exercises along with the correct ways to do them. In this process, she has destroyed several myths about exercises some of which I have believed to be true. She also presents good workout routines irrespective of one's age or gender or form of exercise i.e. cardio, weight training or yoga.

The book doesn't claim for quick results, in fact, it is against it. It recommends exercise to be a routine that benefits in the long run.

However, the writing could be better. I felt the author tries too hard to be funny. She is also liberal with her use of Hindi, but could have provided with an English translation for non-Hindi readers.

This book suffers from the problem that if you have only five lines worth telling and you want to tell it in that in more than two hundreds pages, it is not going to be fun for a reader. The good part is the optimism the author radiates, and the scary picture of not leading a healthy lifestyle is presented very lucidly. When I was reading it, I wondered how come I am still alive?

You realize that all you know about exercise and nutrition is from the sources that cannot be trusted. There is so much information that it becomes terribly hard to figure out the facts. Rujuta debunks all the myths in a humorous way and presents all that you need to know.

Amazing book! It emphasizes the benefits of strength training, I straight away joined the gym after finishing the book. It's a one-stop solution to all your exercise science knowledge. A small request to everyone, if you don't work out or you do work out but not in a systematic way, please read this book. It has a plethora of information that has been written in a very chilled out manner with an Indian touch!

“Sitting is the new smoking.”

there was a time i followed all types of diet and all type of exercises to be fit. loose some extra fat but nevertheless weighing machine just doesn't love me :) and i stay as i am of course with little bit more strength but i always wondered why even after doing so much results are so minimal and ended up cursing my genes and my habit of hogging :P

Reading this book has given me insight of exactly what am i missing, What did i do more and where did i go wrong. in order to understand the mechanism of metabolism and exercise i wouldn't have got any better book than this, explanation was given in a layman terms that you don't need to digest on any Phd book for that .

well let me summarize things i loved :-
* helped me burst lot of myth's related to exercise and even today i see people advising
ex: ' just do Kapalbathi 10 min , you can loose weight '
' if you run , your joints will be gone / running in treadmill is dangerous '
' just walk ! that's enough ( yup my doctor has said this )

* Helped me to focus right meal plan.
ex: what should you eat before work out what is after and why it's necessary
' i have gone to early morning gym with empty stomach imagining i can burn all last night
calories , well i will never do that again '

* Helped me understand the importance of carb , protein and fat and irradiating carbs from food is
a biggest mistake

* myth on sweating
ex: if you sweat more you will loose more fat , of course now i know you just get more stinkier than getting anywhere thin ;)

* importance of weight training

and so on and on...
book also had a example workout plan of the people who totally screwed it up and what should be the changes.

You won't be expert in fitness by reading this book but this will be good start to understand the technique of fitness and weight loss so that you don't put your effort on wrong places . being fit doesn't happen with just 1 day. it's a dedicated effort No rocket science

A good technical book with detailed explanation about almost everything you need to know about workout and things related to it!

For layman also, there are things explained in very simple and detailed manner. Even the technical and scientific stuff are also described in detail, for those who wants to know the science behind workout.

Also my favourite is the myth buster section, here she selects myths around working out and tries to explain how they would have come to widespread and what is wrong with it!

There is a dedicated section for YOGA too, which has very basics covered about yoga, not much details but fine for introduction only.

There is also a very good section about 'knowing to implementing', here she has applied all the rules and policies she has mentioned in book, in a short chapter.

She has also taken a few workout plans of different type of people and tried to refine them using all rules and techniques she mentioned in earlier sections of book.

Overall, a good book to know your workout better and having healthy and injury-free workouts.

With everything in life, including fitness, walk the 'madhayama marg', the golden path according to the Buddha, one that challenges but not exhausts.

I had started "Don't lose your mind, lose your weight" long ago but didn't finish it for some reason. So, I was determined to finish this one, and it was an easy task, and I'm glad I read it. Rujuta talks about exercise science and works hard to bust some fitness myths. She knows what she's talking and has facts to back her up.

Look after yourself and take decisions, medical or otherwise, out of love and not out of fear.

There's some helpful advice in there and a whole bunch of scientific terms, which could prove tricky but she tries to simplify them so we can relate to it better and the book is not long. I am not a big fan of all the Hinglish statements, though. There's a bunch of examples and samples for reference that is helpful. It helped me plan an exercise regime, let's hope I stick to it :)

Don't Lose Out, Work Out! (Paperback)
Non-review rant
Moderately impressed by her first book (Don't Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight), and yet again, to utilize the Kindle Subscription fully, I decided to read the book. After all, it has been two years since I read the previous one.
Review
It is a non-fiction book where the famous celebrity workout instructor Rutuja (The woman responsible for the Chaliya Chaliya look) writes about fitness and other aspects of well-being. Is it different from the first? Honestly, I can't remember much; except a few anecdotes. I wasn't comparing anyway.
Verdict
This is the extent of my fitness regime - reading a fitness book. haha. Read it, cuz it is not bossy.

Must read for those who are looking forward to do something for fitness. The book is mainly targeted towards regular people who looks forward for overall fitness and not for building body (bulking). There are tables with workout routines with details for any beginner to start with. I personally feel that it is worth it.

Note.: But Rajuta's first book, don't lose your mind, lose your weight still remains a better book, and this book won't be able to give you the impact you need if you haven't read that yet. So my suggestion to go for that book prior starting this book. All the best, stay fit; stay blessed.

An essential for everyone !

She explains the whole science of workout in a pretty simple and understandable way. A must read for anyone who doesn't believe in strength training and for those who do, it'll help you correct a lot of things.
Helped me understanding a lot of failure/success that I had in my life while pursuing fitness.

The best part is providing detailed instructions so that you can get started ASAP and summary at the end of each chapter because it's a LOT of info to digest at once.

This is a light read, especially if you are coming from a fitness background. There are some good opinions in this book that are worth exploring. I would not recommend this to somebody who has figured out how to keep fit but to someone who is starting out and need a guideline on; how to go about things.

Rujuta keeps it simple in this book, breaks a few myths related to workouts and suggests something which actually works. I like the way she is able to explain stuff through chemistry - very few fitness enthusiasts can speak in terms of ATP and biochemistry.

I was able to get my fitness plan in place post this book and managed to shave off a few kgs finally.

The book is very well written. The witty style of author with amusing Hinglish quotes will really make you stick to the book like glue. It is knowledge with fun and case studies mentioned are helpful in understanding what Author is trying to explain. So, in short, the book if funny, knowledgeable, interesting and easy to understand but as far as the application of the knowledge in terms of workout plan is concern, I have serious disagreement with her. What workout routine she has mentioned in the book is more like maintenance workout not lose weight workout.

I may not be an expert on theory of subject matter with knowledge on fancy terms and jargons, but I have had lost 23 kgs couple of years ago and now am doing my second transformation which makes me eligible to share some experience specially on weight loss.

Systematically step by step what author is trying to do by this book is convincing people to go to gym, have a trainer appointed because normally for cardio no trainer is needed so she is insisting that weight training is better than anything else when it comes to weight loss, ask the trainer to give you tax receipt so the competition also goes down among trainers. Don’t bother about calories burning while working out because that will create more confusion and need for trainer.

Now in order to convince people to go to gym she is saying don’t do cardio more than once a week, take 2-3 rest days, do strength workout also less than 60 mins and that too only for 2 days in a week. The plan sounds too easy that it will motivate all lazy asses to move to gym. She also insists on eating regular food like Daal, roti, rice etc. But trust me if weight loss is that easy then almost everybody would be walking the road with 10% body fat and lean muscles.

I have read few other reviews where all sorts of people have mentioned that they gained weight after following her plan and I have no doubt that they have not gained weight after completing this book. Even coincidentally I myself did only strength training for a month and did not loose even 100 grams. Then I did HIT and cross fit followed by cardio and results are amazing in 2 weeks only.

I agree with her on the knowledge and I respect her on what she has shared on energy system, post workout meal, focus on muscle fibres, rest need etc. But with this kind of workout an individual may be able to lose 4-5 kgs in 3 months and that’s too low for anyone. Specially if you want a physical appearance change and want other to notice that you have lost weight. The output will be very less and ultimately you will end up quitting. Also, some of the FAQs mentioned in the book are not correct i.e. for cardio like running or cycling it is much better to do it outside instead of on treadmill as the impact of running on ground and pushing your body weight against gravity is comparatively much different then merely jumping on treadmill belt which is moving by a motor. But author says there is no difference.

However aggressive workout will show you faster results but you will loose precious vitamins, minerals, will be short temper, will have frequent mood swings but after 2-3 months when you will look at yourself in mirror or people will start complementing you on your achievement you will have a paradigm shift in your life and confidence. Glow on face, positive energy will always come back once you move to maintenance mode workout and then you can surely follow the simple and easy routine mentioned by author in the book.

So, my takeaway from this book is:

Have a workout routine with combination of strength and cardio.
1. 1 planned Rest week.

2. Use post workout meal in 2 categories as right after workout in 45 mins and then in next 4 hours.

3. Vitamins and minerals listing for post workout has really helped me choose a multivitamin without referring to fancy advertisements & fake reviews.

4. Warm up using light weight for same muscle and not running or rope skipping etc.

5. Fuel concept of aerobic and anaerobic type workouts.

6. East 7-8 times in small portions with balance diet of 40,40,20 of carbs, protein and fat respectively.

The book is really knowledgeable, author has put lot of effort and I really liked her writing style with amusing quotes and references so 4 out of 5 ratings to the book, but you need to be cautious and pick relevant information and use it wisely as the plan mention by her is more like a weight maintenance plan not weight loss plan.

Empowering and Practical: "Don't Lose Out, Work Out!"
"Don't Lose Out, Work Out!" by Rujuta Divekar is a refreshing and empowering guide that challenges conventional fitness and weight loss approaches. With a focus on holistic well-being and sustainable lifestyle changes, Divekar presents a comprehensive roadmap to achieving and maintaining a healthy body through exercise.

One of the standout features of this book is Divekar's emphasis on understanding the individual's unique needs and body type. She emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to fitness and instead encourages readers to listen to their bodies and make informed choices. Divekar promotes the idea that exercise should be enjoyable and sustainable, rather than a grueling chore driven solely by aesthetics.

The author's writing style is conversational and relatable, making the book accessible to readers from various fitness backgrounds. She demystifies complex exercise jargon and breaks down workout routines, making them easily understandable for beginners. Divekar's use of real-life examples and success stories adds an inspiring touch, motivating readers to embark on their own fitness journeys.

Another strength of the book is Divekar's emphasis on the importance of nutrition in conjunction with exercise. She highlights the role of food as fuel, dispels common myths around dieting, and provides practical advice on nourishing the body for optimal performance and overall health. This holistic approach sets "Don't Lose Out, Work Out!" apart from many other fitness books, as it recognizes that exercise and nutrition go hand in hand.

While the book offers a wealth of practical guidance and motivation, it could benefit from more detailed explanations and scientific evidence supporting some of the claims made. Although Divekar draws from her extensive experience as a celebrity fitness trainer, a deeper exploration of the scientific underpinnings would have strengthened the credibility of the recommendations.

In a nutshell, "Don't Lose Out, Work Out!" is a refreshing and practical guide to fitness and well-being. Rujuta Divekar's empowering approach encourages readers to prioritize their overall health and happiness over fleeting weight loss goals. With its emphasis on individuality, sustainable practices, and the integration of nutrition and exercise, this book provides a valuable resource for anyone seeking a balanced and enjoyable approach to fitness. Whether you are a fitness enthusiast or a beginner looking to kickstart a healthy lifestyle, Divekar's insights will undoubtedly inspire and guide you on your path to improved well-being.

This book deserves so many stars because of the power packed plethora of guidance and knowledge it packs with a punch along with our author's unique style of witty humor.

𝑰𝒇 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒖𝒛𝒛𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒃𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒐.

I love the fact that Ms. Diwekar has written this book in a way that a person with absolutely zero knowledge about health and fitness can embark instantly on their own fitness journey and also a pro who's being working out regularly, because this book goes to the very basic of things: From how important your local and homemade food intake is to when to eat and why and so much more, teaching us how the right nutrition can accelerate our fitness progress.

We see why Weight training is so important but moreover how fantastic it is for our body and she's clearly explained all the science behind it and also I loved how she's answered faqs and debunked lots of myths.

𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒅𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒐𝒖𝒕 (𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒇 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌) 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒏𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒑𝒖𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒓 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌, 𝒆𝒕𝒄.

Seriously, if you ever read just one book for your better health and fitness then this is it and you wouldn't have to look any further.

Our bodies are indeed our temple and Ms. Diwekar gives you the basics, the core that's needed to understand the right workings of a much needed workout for our bodies.
From Weight Training, Cardio, Yoga and so much more, along with case studies we also get to see how mixing certain exercises without understanding it and just following trends don't always give us desirable effects and what's the right way to go about it.

I really enjoyed reading how what you eat is broken down by your body, how nutrients are used by your body, what sources your body goes to first, why fat is hard to lose.. I really absolutely loved this book because I'd been wanting a book like this which explains it all in the best way.

Indeed a Must Read.

I know Ms Diwekar, like most the other reader from the popularity she gained with Kareena Kapoor Khan weight loss. My wife and I follow her health tips and took part in the 12-week transformation. She is definitely committed towards her work and really tries to make everyone's health their own priorities. She has given many seminars and advice (most of them are available over YouTube) and this book is the result of those seminars. I am giving this book a 4 star as there's a lot of very useful stuff in here. As usual a special emphasis on 'Strength training' and eating habits . I am definitely going to try her method and if my motivation level goes down will read the highlighted point form the book.

To conclude, I would recommend this book to every Indian ( and to give the reason for reducing a star, the things goes without saying that please take it up if and only if you can ignore the cringe-worthy writing style of the author. I am really very sorry to write this in a review as I have a lot of respect for the author, but the style of writing made me leave this book many a time; I came back only because I know how much important things are explained in this book. The Bambaiyya Hindi might work over YouTube - though I am not a fan over there as well, in a book it would have been a Bible if she could have avoided it. I am not the only one who has a problem with the style of writing please also check Ms Tambe's review here with whom I agree the most - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...).

Rujuta is India’s leading nutrition and science expert having trained many well-known celebrities – Kareena Kapoor being one of them. I recently read the following books by her:
1) Don’t lose out, workout
2) Don’t lose your mind, lose your weight.

These books have been very insightful for me personally as it clarified on various myths around exercising and nutrition. Some of the common myths busted in the books are – walking is the best exercise, women should not weight train as it will lead to big muscles, one should avoid eating ghee to reduce fat etc. Her book has some interesting anecdotes and examples like by playing cricket on weekends one cannot become Sachin Tendulkar, similarly by lifting weights few days in a week will not lead you to become a weight lifter.

It's a good read for anybody interested in understanding the science of nutrition and exercise. Again her humorous writing style and real life examples makes the book more fun to read.

Personally, I have been working out for many years and consider myself to be quite fit however I noticed that I was not able to put on the muscle mass or lose some of the belly fat that I had. I believed that I exercised and ate very healthily, but after reading through the above books I realised that my diet was all wrong. After a weight training session, I had almost always felt quite fatigued and didn’t’ have the energy for rest of the day. I often failed to realise the reasons behind this. Now, after reading through her books I can understand the reasons behind this.

Being a fan of her previous book Don't lose your mind, lose your weight and her approach and affinity towards local foods I started reading this book. This book definitely demystifies a lot of myths followed in the fitness arena. Debunking myths in terms of fitness for a common man is essential as of now. In this book, Rujuta has taken great effort in explaining the technical terms to the common man. If you are an enthusiast who wants to take fitness regime and kinda overwhelmed by the excess of information available online and the overcharging Gyms and other classes then this book might throw some really great insight on what's and what not's.

Having said all the above, I am unable to rate this book as a perfect book. The two things which made me cringe is the excess usage of Hindi, although it felt funny and timely initially over a point in time it was a wee bit annoying. Although this can be excused, the most important point which I felt bad is the way she puts down the other practices. A similar tone was found in many of speeches and books but in this book, it kind of went overboard. There is no denial about the author's prowess in the domain, putting other practices down kind of irritates the readers and practitioners at some point. The content of the book is perfect and unparalleled and gives you a proper insight.

You can definitely sit through these cringe-worthy things to gain a lot of necessary knowledge which helps you in living a better life.
