Josey Anderson will be the perfect wife. She and Chase did have the perfect wedding—if you don't count the matron of honor going into labor. Now all she has to do is find a cute Cape-style house, report for the Gull Lake, Minnesota, paper, bake cookies and learn to sew—is that so difficult?
But when Chase lands a new job—in Moscow—Josey's dreams disintegrate. After all, she's been there, done that as a missionary, and a city without year-round hot water, decent takeout or…maternity clothes—that's not perfection! But what's the perfect wife to do?
I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.
I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.
Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.
Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.
Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.
I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I just finished Chill Out, Josey last night. This book was such a scream that it made my list, though a few days late, but only because the holidays slowed down my reading schedule. This book was very hard to put down and kept begging to be read. I was literally drawn to it...constantly.
About the book:
Josey Anderson will be the perfect wife. She and Chase did have the perfect wedding--if you don't count the matron of honor going into labor. Now all she has to do is find a cute Cape-style house, report for the Gull Lake, Minnesota, paper, bake cookies and learn to sew--is that so difficult?
But when Chase lands a new job--in Moscow--Josey's dreams disintegrate. After all, she's been there, done that as a missionary, and a city without year-round hot water, decent takeout or . . . maternity clothes--that's not perfection! But what's the perfect wife to do?
My Review:
Don't read this book in public. All of the snickering and snorting will draw attention to yourself, and you won't be able to hold it back. I read about four pages of this book to my son the other night (while we were waiting to start a game) and even he (Mr. Serious) starting rolling in laughter with me. Josey is such a great character. Her thoughts were hilarious and her antics were totally nuts. But she tries so hard you've gotta love her. She is a bit naive, though, when it comes to some things, but fortunately the trust she places in people is not destroyed. You have to love someone who cares as much she does, right? Isn't that what makes her so adorable? I think so.
Josey had funny names for people that will make you laugh, but she is descriptive without sounding mean, and I loved that. She referred to the Russian women (who worked with her husband) as the underfeds because they were so thin compared to her. And when she starts going through her internal pregnancy thoughts (like comparing herself to a manatee) make sure your mouth is empty or you'll spew food on your book. Trust me, this story is a keeper. You won't want to ruin it.
I especially enjoyed one of the key props in this book. Josey referred to them using a pet name, scary pants. There is a whole lot of subtle meaning that goes in to that clothing item. Brilliantly done! Personally, I think this author is most gifted in writing funny chick lit. I hope Josey's legacy continues or I'll be one sad reader. Of all of the books I've read in the past year, this is by far the most amusing, but it also had some profoundly insightful moments that were a natural part of the storyline.
Lest you think you will get only humor from this book, let me set you straight now. Josey gains insight into her inner life and motivations, and as a reader you will do some soul-examining along with her. The spiritual message is wonderful. Steeple Hill deserves major kudos for publishing this work of art. This is what Christian Chick lit should be about...humor and depth. Susan May Warren has that going on here, so enjoy!
Chill Out, Josey was published by Steeple Hill Cafe and released in December 2007! Get a copy while they are still hot!
great book that displays the adjustments of newlyweds and the lessons learned by trial and error. Josey learns that keeping secrets in a marriage is the wrong thing to do. Men aren't perceptive enough to see the obvious signs of pregnancy even in their own wife especially when a new and a new county are involved in the mix. But through it all the lord love us unconditionally and is there for us even when the world is turning inside out.
This was a fun chick lit read, though with underdeveloped supporting characters and somewhat predictable plot. This new bride is striving to be the Proverbs 31 wife, even when a sudden job change moves them to Russia. She wants to support her husband so much that she doesn't want to tell him when she finds out that she is pregnant the day before they leave! The actual storytelling might leave something to desire, but the resolution packed a spiritual punch that I needed.
2025 Review: Another fun reread. I really do enjoy this series, and love following Josey and Chase's adventures. Again, Josey could use a shake sometimes - in a loving way of course - but truly amusing.
2017 review: 4.5 Another enjoyable Josey book! I think I liked the first one best, but this one was still excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
I generally love Susan May Warren books, and this was no exception. However, I had a really hard time with the first few chapters--it seemed hard to get into. Once I did, though, I could hardly put it down. This is a sequel to "Everything's Coming Up Josey" and I would recommend reading that first.
I enjoyed this three book series! A Minnesota girl in Russia, first Moscow and then (gasp!) Siberia. I liked all of the characters, although I got aggravated at times with the main character, Josey. But it all worked out in the end :)
Fairly good book...I enjoy this author's stuff, because it paints a more realistic view of the Christian life...not all sunshine and roses and perfect endings.
I love this author and she does not disapoint.I get so excited over a book written by her this one was no exception. Its great from the first to the last.
Not quite as funny or heartwarming as the first one but I still enjoyed the humor and the way Warren can bring Russia to life (as if I was there again). An enjoyable read.
Can secrets really cause more problems than honesty?
Well this author has an unusual sense of humor. Josie and Chase get married and days before they leave for Russia for Chase's new job with World Mission Josie gets the results of her required blood work for her Visa. And her secret causes her more problems than she can handle. She finds it hard to be the Proverbs 31 woman. OK to be fair I didn't read these 3 books in order. But in any order Josey is a hoot! I'm not sure I could of have handled a new marriage in Russia with her growing secret! I recommend reading this series in order!
Josey is a character that just feels utterly relatable! He commentary on her early marriage is humorous, honest and just so...her. I will admit this book made me want to smack Chase up the head a few times. But it turned into another easy read addition and a testimony of love and how God is with us in good times and bad.
There's a lot of humor and God wisdom woven in between. It's like taking your medicine with a spoon full of sugar. I would recommend this book to any young woman going into marriage who's unsure of herself. I'm a die hard Susan May Warren fan. Her books are God-breathed.
I love Susan May Warren's books and have read many and plan to continue reading them. This book gave an insight into her life and personality that was very enjoyable. I did feel that many of her comments within parentheses was a little confusing and unnecessary to the whole story. However, I am going to read book 1 and 3 because I still enjoyed book 2.
Such a well written and enjoyable story! I loved every moment of this continuation into Josey’s & Chase’s life! Humorous and dramatic as the first, and filled with a lot of emotion, faith, heart, and real-life doubts and struggles, this read had me thoroughly engaged from page 1. I can’t wait to enjoy book 3!!!
Josey and Chase return to Russia as Chase accepts a new job opportunity. Add to that the vulnerability of Josey in her role of new bride and expectant mother. Josey actually shows more fortitude in the face of Chase's neglect of her than I would have. I probably would have slapped him! I still enjoyed the story, and it was a fast and engaging read.
Chill Out Josey is a wonderful chick flick story. Josey learns some valuable lessons in her newly wedded life, including not keeping secrets from her husband. Josey has to trust God and allow Him to fix things. Chase has some areas he needed to work on. Great story with humor and powerful truths.
Absolutely wonderful book following Josey and Chase and their adventures in Russia. Such a fun and entertaining story. Be sure to read the ups and downs of Josey and her friends as she and Chase traverse the life of newly weds in a foreign country.
