One of the most exciting first novels to appear in years, Bomb Run has been described as "a military The High and the Mighty." Certainly one of the finest novels ever written about flying, it is one of the most exciting reading experiences in any genre.

About the Spencer Dunmore was a schoolboy in Yorkshire, England during World War II and watched bombers limping home to the RAF airfields there. His imagination was fired by this experience to the extent that he became an expert on the war in the air, 1939-1945, and his accounts of the bombers and fighters involved are renowned for their accuracy. Dunmore left Britain for Canada in the mid-50s where he was an advertising executive for many years. Dunmore is now a full-time writer and a private pilot on weekends and resides in Ontario.

Bomb Run tells a tale of a Lancaster raid on Berlin. The story centred on one crew versus a relentless enemy plane. The Messerschmitt Bf 110 enemy plane is often depicted as a weak opponent especially during the Battle of Britain, where many were taken down by Hawker Hurricanes. Here the entanglement is closely portrayed ; both the English and German prose is fairly given. A good read with much insight in WW2 era technology

A pretty good read.

While it got a little tedious at times, overall it was a pretty good book. It's the first book I've read about an end of tour crew and the exploration of their emotions was enlightening.

Good piece of Flying Historical Fiction the author puts you in the mission the planes and the feelings of the flyers involved. A nice read.

Kanadalaisen Spencer Dunmoren sotaromaani "Pommituslento" (Weilin+Göös, 1971) oli eräs varhaisnuoruuteni mieleenpainuneista kirjoista, josta pidin muistaakseni yläasteella melko huonon kirjaesitelmän. Juonireferaattejahan ne silloin lähinnä taisivat olla.

Luin kirjan nyt toisen kerran, ja totesin ettei se ollut itse asiassa lainkaan hassumpi sotaromaani. Nopealukuisessa kirjassa kuvaa kiitettävän hyvin sotaan kyllästymistä, kuolemanpelkoa ja muita ajatuksia, joita lentäjien päässä pyörii ilmatorjuntatulen ja yöhävittäjien täyttämällä taivaalla. Näkökulma on lähinnä Walter Mannin, mutta pitkää yöllistä lentoa kuvataan myös saksalaisen Messerschmitt BF110 -pilotin ohjaamosta (suomalaisen kansikuvan painoksessa on muuten syystä tai toisesta ME-109). Luullakseni romaanissa olisi voitu kuvata vielä vähän enemmän muidenkin miehistön jäsenten elämää ja tuntemuksia, nyt nämä tahtoivat jäädä vähän statisteiksi.

Vahvat kolme tähteä. Voisi kokeilla myös yläkoulun vinkkauksissa.
