Susan Copperfield is the royal romance, urban fantasy loving alter ego of award-winning & USA Today bestselling novelist R.J. Blain.
Under the super not-so-secret identity of Susan, the Royal States of America is explored, where the work of sixteen founding royal families preserved the United States from destruction and civil war when magic swept over the world.
In the Royal States, life, love, and magic always finds a way.
Loved finally getting to see Prince Ian get his happily ever after.
As we interrogations books Ian ( the Prince of New York) and his siblings were physically and emotionally abused by their parents, as such Ian has a lot of issues, self esteem being one of the worst. So, when he meets the woman he would like to spend the rest of his life with he is too afraid of letting her know of his feelings, as such when her tenure in the Royal Palace is over she leaves never knowing she is loved by a prince. Sometime after his sister Rachel ascends the throne of New York Madelyn is manipulated into returning to the Royal Palace to work directly for Ian as his personal aide. But the path to romance does not run smoothly when it turns out Madelyn has an abusive ex determined to get her back................................
Better than the last one (at least nobody is buying thousands of horses) and as usual the characters are lovable and funny. But the plot is a mess, jumping from terrorists to stalking, to child abuse, to animal rescue, back to terrorists, back to stalking, back to terrorists … And not one of these stories really gets developed. And none of them make any sense. Not to mention the most lacklustre love story in the whole series.
This story About Ian was so worth the wait. I love how so many characters are tied into his story and the resolution the author gives to a tried and true character. No spoilers but goodness if you love stories with heart and comedy this is a must read.
This was an OK version of the Ian from a Guiding Light but not really up to what I expected. Lots of talk, bits of action thrown in and about half the book doesn't add much to the story progression. And yet another car on the animal empathy train that's gotten way too long.
It was good to read Ian's story. It was very slow to start with lots of banter and repeating the same conversation over and over something I have complained about in other books but then stuff happened and it was quite good. Love all the animals and reading about everybody from other books.
Ugh I just tried to post a long review and only part of it was retained... well this will just have to do I guess...
Generally, I really enjoy this series. I enjoy the premise, the different OP magics the characters develop and their zany behaviors. I love seeing the original characters pop back up, and the way they influence the continuing story. I like the warmth and family-feeling between the various characters and the way they interact. I am less keen on the continuing theme of abuse and trauma, but it is nearly always presented as an obstacle to overcome on the way to the guaranteed HEA and the comeuppance of the bad guys, so in the end the story has a warm fuzzy feeling. I like Ian as a character, especially when he's causing trouble, so I've been looking forward to reading his story after all the teasers. However, I thought this story seemed a bit disjointed, with a lot crammed into it, jumping from abuse to pet adoptions to terrorists and back, interspersed with long, rambling discussions/internal monologues that are often repetitive. Also the characters in the newer books are starting to act and sound very similar to previous ones, maybe as an effect of the writing style? It must be difficult to make the different characters sound like distinct personalities when writing a first person pov. They do all tend towards the over-dramatic. Lots of sighing, hanging heads and self-deprecation... The reoccurring themes of adopting/rescuing multitudes of animals and children and a general pregnancy obsession are starting to get a bit stale to be honest, as well as making them blur into an indistinguishable mass. Don't get me wrong, I love that they are so compassionate and keen to protect endangered species, but it would be nice to see more of the interactions with and personalities of the secondary characters and pets, rather than just throwing in a whole load of animals. And the romantic relationship is barely there, I have no idea at all who Madelyn is as a person beyond an abuse victim with little/no magic. I didn't see the attraction between the MCs at all. If she even counts as an MC - she kind of came across as a secondary, filler character rather than a main love interest. So in the end I gave this book a lower rating in comparison to the rest of the series, but it was still an enjoyable read and I will look out for the next one... hopefully Eddie and Dierdre's story will be coming soon...

2025 bk 50 - Copperfield continues to keep me engaged with her characters - the "what happened to" delights me when characters from previous books are worked into the story line and in The Prince Of New York, I believe that just about every major character is revisited. From early blurbs I was expecting one story and instead received an entire group of different (but only by a step or two) story lines to follow and engage as a reader. I stayed up til 2:30 a.m., til my eyes wouldn't stay open, then woke at 6:30 and finished the book. Now I will go back and read again to savor the book and the characters.
I love how the author makes each of her characters so relatably different. Ian of New York seems to be a lot like Kelvin of Illinois in his desire to fade into the background while making a difference (and in his health challenges) but for someone who is trying to be a wallflower, he has a tendency to fall face first into the spotlight. I liked his jumping feet first into adoptive fatherhood; I enjoyed his fumbling attempts at respectful romance; I cheered his reactions to the abusive ex-. This may have been the quietest of the Royal States books but it feels like one of the most deep. I definitely had fun with this!
As expected, I loved the latest in the Royal States series! New and old favorite characters returning for quick cameos or deeper involvement. I've read all of this author's books under all pen names, and thought early on, oh, I see where this is going. (Silly me), clever author wins again! I did not see those twists and turns coming! as an aside, Kitty dragons ftw! Thanks for bringing attention to important topics, and bringing us along to see justice served in all it's weird and wonderful ways 😁 Waiting patiently for the next one.
I do enjoy this series and this book continues that
Ms. Copperfield is a wonderful storyteller. Ian and Madelyn are a wonderful couple. Ian has a number of issues, not the least is the abuse he grew up with. Madelyn is escaping an abusive relationship.
As a former child protective caseworker, I love the changes he wants to put in place. 1strike and out!
This is a great addition to the series. It does help to read the others in the series.
These books are set in an alternate Earth where magic came back, and only the most powerful become kings and queens. In the United States, they take over former US states. One of the princes of New York is a mess, and needs a whole lot of help recovering from parental abuse. This book has the after effects of parental abuse in it, so if that's triggering for you, this may not be the best book for you. The book is sweet, funny, fierce, and really cool. This author gets better and better, and I can't wait to read another one in the series.
This series is devolving into collecting animals and children/pregnancy. While there were bits that I enjoyed, the vast majority of the book is aimless chatter between the characters, and absolutely no relationship development between what’s supposed to be the main couple. I mean, the female lead had so little on-page time that I kept forgetting her name. In recent books it feels like the author is using the empathy bond as a shortcut to getting the couple together without having to put actual effort into writing them getting together.
I am so pleased for Ian. He had such a difficult childhood and really comes into his own in this book. A number of other favourites also appear. Great to see situations resolved while being realistic about long term trauma effects. Note that there are potential triggers in this book but RJ Blain has handled them very well.
Love the variety of animals that join Ian on this journey!
If you know this series, you know that it deals with difficult things. Also, after the author finishes dragging her characters through the mud (literally in some cases), they get their happy ending. This book is not the place to start the series. I repeat....do not jump into the series with book 10.
I ahve been waiting with much excitement for the release.of this latest book in the Royal States series. This was a great story. I loves watching Ian grow into himself and seeing how he got the girls, all his girls. Great fun read. Not as much profanity in this book thankful.
This was maybe the best of the Royal States stories! There was just so much to love and enjoy and then there were all the twist to keep you guessing. Then add how this was over 400 pages!!! Thanks. Just love the depth that gives the work. Now into my kitchen to make some chicken and .....
Love this series. So many characters to follow. I enjoy rereading to keep current. Ian's story has been a long time coming and was worth the wait. The world-building is thorough and intricate. The stories are intriguing and I hope you find them as interesting as I do. Enjoy!
Following Prince Ian through his trials and tribulations to overcome his upbringing is an exciting and emotional journey. Characters have depth and are easy to relate to. I had trouble putting it down.
I love the Royal States books, and this doesn't disappoint! Happy endings with vast amounts of new animals - horses, leopards, and more. New empathy talents and snarky strong females. I'm sad I finished it 😂😥😍
Fans of the Royal States have been waiting for Ian's story. It's been a slow burn! Now, we can say it was definitely worth the wait, and we're glad that he's won the woman of his dreams. (Not a spoiler, because we ALL know the prince/king/princess/queen will get the person that's right!)
Once again, author has done an excellent job of storytelling. Believable characters, interesting plot, action, and wonderful animals adding details and seasoning to the human characters.
I truly do enjoy the Royal States books. They are always a mix of funny with sad, but they always work. Somehow, I think I missed the prior book, so I am off now to figure out that.
I don’t care what series it is, I love everything that comes out of your pen! I hope there is still life in the Royal States series, if not, the new detective series has good legs too! The intriguing attraction that Ian has for new species is quite fun in this book!
I love this book and this series!! It was a marvelous book, one of the rare ones that I loved so much that I wanted to read it again immediately. I would highly recommend it. If I could give it more stars I would. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
You can never go wrong with a Royal States book. Humor, plot, love story, usually horses or other animals, unique magic, hijinks and a happy ending. What more can a reader ask for?
This is such a great story for one of the series favourite characters. Ian has been helping everyone in some way or another in every book it seems and it is wonderful to read about his happy ever after with his new family.
I already liked Prince Ian of New York from previous books, but I was unprepared for all the feels from this new book. The chaos is glorious and the critters are a fun time for all!
