this book wanted to reap all the benefits of a Dramione-esque romance with none of the elements that make Dramione work. please, for the love of god, don’t make this a thing. i can’t take the pathetic ACOTAR knock-off trend wearing a new, platinum blonde wig.

where was the genuine hate to love? the wizardry? the tension? the angst? the whimsy?

all we got here was a one-dimensional main character with no personality beyond studying and being uptight, paired with a love interest who seemed to solely exist to be just that—a love interest.

this very much read like a fan fiction with all the names changed, because we were thrown into the world with zero effort to world build the entire story. it drives me nuts when “fantasy” romance books do this, its insulting to the fantasy genre and to the reader. put some god damn effort in to the parts of the story thats supposed to make it fantastical! its irritating as hell.

the last few lines were also so bizarre… is the author trying to set up for a sequel? instead of wrapping up the story properly it ended with a conversation between the main character and a side character that was totally unfinished. wtf was that?

i have some highly anticipated Dramione fanfics-turned-unique-published-book coming up this year and this one feels like a bad omen? 😭 i really hope not.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but Noah and Henri are rivals. Not that she said it every other sentence.

If there's anything I love about the British, it's their use of the word "snog". I promise that this book isn't spicy at all, but that silly little word shows up like 10 times. 🇬🇧🫶🏼

The perfect palate cleanser!! This was a quick, easy, fun read about love and potions. I think it's perfect for fall weather / spooky season. I definitely wouldn't say that it has a substantial plot or much depth at all, though. As for the characters, Henri is kind of annoying, but it's overpowered by Noah being head over heels for her so we'll take it.

The story is short and sweet, perfect for anyone looking for a light escape. While it may not satisfy those seeking a gripping narrative, it's an ideal choice for readers who just want to vibe and enjoy a cozy, magical atmosphere. I found it to be a good time, but don't expect much more than that lol. 🧪✨

I DONT CARE IF IT MENTIONS THEYRE RIVALS 10000x IM OBSESSED WITH NOAH AND THIS CUTE BOOK

The book was just vibes, giddiness and a MMC that isn’t just broody, grumpy and dark haired like every other book

It’s less than 300 pages of just fun and potions, how can anyone complain about a fun book that’s not too serious???

Sooooo much potential. The writing didn’t really flow and the main character lacked personality. I wish there was more magic.

I hate being mean in my reviews but I am so frustrated with this book it’s my only option.

I saw this on TikTok and I got so excited- a book that sounds very much like dramione?? Sign me up! If you are picking this book up with that hope, put this book down again.

The fmc felt very one-dimensional. At the start she was unrealistically irate and strict, and by the end she was vomiting, crying, or waxing on about the mmc. And don’t worry, at the end of the day he has to save everything, not the smartest girl in school.

The ending was incredibly rushed, I guessed one of the major plot twists just for there to be a lazy explanation about why that wasn’t the *actual* plot twist.

The side characters all felt very flat.

To top it all off there was not. One. Drop. Of. Smut. Even when the characters kissed it was very tame- think our lips met, we kissed passionately, etc. with no substance.

There were grammatical and spelling mistakes, can’t believe I read the whole thing.

This book was very cute, and ultimately I did enjoy it! It is a single POV, and a closed door romance.

I will say, the fantasy/magic aspect of it is not explained in the slightest. It is the most basic kind of magic system, so it is very easy to grasp with no explanation provided, but some kind of world building would have been nice. Because this is a quick romantasy, I wouldn’t really hold that against the book, but it did trip me up at the beginning.

2.5, considering 3 ⭐️

My review is like the book, constantly reminding you they’re rivals, and they hate each other. Even though you know it’s your typical “enemies to lovers”, she’s an oblivious nerd to his existence besides his grades.

While this book was cute (did you know they are rivals?), there was a lot that was either rushed or drawn out too much (did you know they’re supposed to hate each other?). There was little to no magic in this at all (8 years of rivalry in case you forgot), there was a lack of character growth or connection with them (still rivals btw) and while I did enjoy as things progressed a lot was obvious (they should still hate each other right about now).

Still overall a fun quick read!

I came across Potions, Poisons, and Policies on Booktok, and thought this novel, focusing on a magical school turned upside down by a love potion, sounded fun. When I came across the book a second and third time, I was naturally intrigued by the idea of academic rivals, who are the only ones unaffected by the affliction of a schoolwide love potion, and reluctantly team up to find an antidote. I thought this was such a cute idea that I decided to pick it up.

"ALL STUDENTS MUST RETIRE DIRECTLY TO THEIR DORMS—ALONE! LOVE POTION DISTRIBUTED ACROSS CAMPUS IN ACADEMY ATTACK."

I was hoping for a read similar to Sorcery of Small Magics, but unfortunatelyPotions, Poisons, and Policies lacked much of the charm, character development, and subtlety of the former. The novel reads mostly like a Harry Potter fanfic, with the female lead, Henrietta “Henri” Baker resembling studious Hermione, and the male lead, Noah, resembling Draco Malfoy, down to his influential family and his ability to play Quidditch—er, football. I think fans of Harry Potter, specifically the Dramione (Draco x Hermione) pairing, will find plenty to entertain in Potions, Poisons, and Policies, but I personally prefer a little more focus on character development outside of the romantic relationship and the fantasy aspect of romantasy novels.

Unfortunately, neither main character is particularly likeable and are more archetypes than fully developed characters. Henrietta only has one personality trait, which is that she likes to study. That's it. She doesn't do anything else whatsoever, not even on the weekends. No secret campaign to free house elves or anything else of the kind, which makes her feel very boring and flat. Noah, on the other hand, isn't much better. Not helping matters is that when readers first stumble across him, he reads more like a walking-talking sexual harassment case than anything else. The comments he makes to Henrietta while they are still in their rivalry stage are anything but endearing. And I was unable to see how anyone could make someone so icky suddenly an attractive male lead.

While the author does highlight some of his better qualities, it doesn't feel earned, as it's almost like a switch had been flipped and suddenly he's a brand new character. There's no slow reveals or glimpses of redeeming qualities hidden until they worked together and were forced to see each other in a new light. Instead, there's suddenly a fake dating scenario, complete with forced proximity. The reason for this fake dating is in order to fool the perpetrator of the love potion who is monitoring and threatening Noah and Henri to stop looking for a cure. However, none of this fake dating thing really makes a whole lot of sense to me, as the perpetrator already knew the two were working on a cure in the first place, and it seemed like a love potion was already a big enough excuse for the forced proximity trope all on its own.

"Love potions didn't just make anyone fall in love with the first person they laid eyes on. They only brought out feelings that were previously harbored by the witch or wizard affected. If I had an infatuation with someone before the love potion bombing, I would be one of the many wrapped up in physical affection. But I didn't, so I remained safely tucked inside my room."

Plus, suddenly the characters are ramping up the dial on the affection meter to 100 and referring to each other as “baby,” and “darling.” Undoubtedly, plenty of some readers will find this swoon worthy, but I found it over-the-top and rather hard to bear because of how Noah's character acted before. I'm also a huge fan of the build up before characters act on their feelings—I could easily read an entire series waiting for characters to admit their feelings for one another, let alone acting on them. But in Potions, Poisons, and Policies, the characters jump straight from aggravation to acting on their attraction, which I can't help but to find disappointing. Without much fleshing out of their relationship or their characters, it was hard for me to care what happened to the two leads and their relationship. Plus, the rest of the cast, which is really only two or three side characters, with a teacher and some momentary love rivals thrown in, is similarly underdeveloped.

Likewise, the world-building is practically non-existent. All I can tell you about the world of Potions, Poisons, and Policies is that the magic school's name is Forrestbriar and features different majors, like Masters of Potions or Masters of Policies. The only other factors of note are that cars and cell phones work fine in conjunction with magic, there are powerful magical families which hold important jobs (which in turn, give their children a higher chance at success in the school), and that the school enjoys football. One can insinuate that there must be other magical schools, as Noah and Henri encounter a student from an opposing football team, but there's no outright mention of them. There is not much time or page space dedicated to any of these factors, sadly. This will be fine for readers wanting the focus on the romance and not the fantasy, but it was a little hard for me to ignore, personally.

Potions, Poisons, and Policies has a great idea, but its execution just didn't work for me. I think readers who want to read something light and fun that isn't bogged down with a whole lot of other stuff outside of the main romance, will enjoy this book. Fans of forced proximity, fake dating, and Dramione will also find plenty to love, but as someone who is all about the build up and the tension in romance novels, Potions, Poisons, and Policies just wasn't to my personal taste.

Overview:

(I kept seeing the author advertise on Tiktok, and this is an awesome recommendation).

Henrietta, a grumpy and studious FMC, is seemingly the only one on campus unaffected by a love potion. That is, until she runs into her nemesis: Noah Lawrence. Together, they team up to brew an antidote and catch the culprit.

The good:

The story itself was cute and well written. I really liked Henrietta and Noah's love story. You think you know who's brewing the love potion, and the twist at the end? I didn't expect that.

HOWEVER, there was little to no world building outside of campus; not much mention of the FMC's family or how the magic system works and hardly any world building about Forrestbriar Academy, the school they were going to.

Other thoughts:

- The magic in the world. Is It's not really explained, either. There's little to no world building. The outside villages kind of remind me of Hogsmeade.

It probably could have used another editing job before being published; BUT overall it was a good read if you're looking for something fast paced and magical.

1/5 🌶️ Closed door, but lots of making out.

This was Dramione coded like crazy as a reader of lots of fanfic…I’m fine with that. The magic system being somewhat vague didn’t even bother me because the magic we need to understand IS explained. I think my main issue with this was that there is just such a lack of communication between ALL of the characters…not just the MCs. That’s the main root of the conflict. It’s just always so irritating when the problem in a book could be solved by people talking things out.

That being said, I would have been able to tolerate the communication issues if there had been some spice. The MCs had great chemistry and it felt wasted by the fact that we never get to see it pay off since it’s closed door. Just…a little peek? Come on. The MMC’s parents are mentioned an awful lot considering we don’t meet them too. I dunno. I enjoyed the Dramione of this, but I felt like this relied too much on the plot of the potioning and didn’t spend enough time character building. I would have preferred more time enjoying seeing their relationship develop.

Content warnings: assault, dubious consent, sexual assault, non-con due to love potion (that’s very specific, but whatever)

I am giving this book a solid 2.5 stars. It is short and cute, but lacking in many ways for me.

Here's what didn't work IMO:
1) The protagonists' names (I might be biased and picky here)
2) The protagonists felt flat and one-dimensional. Henri honestly had no personality
3) They fell in love in a few weeks--that is wild behavior.
4) Where is the tension?? Where is this love you speak of beyond what is clearly a new crush?
4.5) The lack of spice--spice builds a connection between characters, so to gloss over it in one sentence is odd, especially given the age of these characters
5) I'm sorry-- she was given a mastery for that? That's way bigger than Dumbledore giving Gryffindor those house points in HP1. It sounds a little too good to be true, I'm just saying.

I did like that it was an easy read and Noah's protective nature. I just wish this story had a little more development.

Alright, so…here we go. Was this essentially a Draco and Hermoine fanfic? Yes. Am I embarrassed to admit I read the whole thing? Also yes. This book had potential, but it just wasn’t quite there. Bonus points for no smut and name dropping LotR, but I didn’t love the language (so unnecessary and forced). There were some grammatical/spelling errors, the characters were not fully developed/well written, but the book did have me smiling like a goober at some parts so there’s that. (ᵕ•_•) Overall, easy and quick read, but I wouldn’t read it again.

Editing to add that the way the characters behave is not the way grad students behave. They felt more like teenagers.

I’m rounding up because I did enjoy the last half of the book. This was very clear in its … inspirations … but lacked world building, character building, magic, and didn’t live up to the hopes I had by looking at the cover and summary 😔

It is clearly a reskinned fanfic but the author needed to do like 2-3 more rounds of truly making it their own before publishing.

So 2-2.5 stars rounded up to a 3 because truly I’m a sucker for Dramione in any form and probably would have eaten this up on AO3 🙂‍↕️

Fast paced, easy to jump in, and a cute little novella. Loved the wizard school vibes and the different masteries they could pick to study! MMC gave me strong Garrett Weasley (from hogwarts legacy) vibes.
Can we get a book 2 for Lukas??🥺🥺

This was very a cute and easy read BUT I’m shocked there was an editor. There were a few mistakes I’ll excuse since the author is British, but anytime there were text messages bt characters, it was always in a different format which bothered me. Also, introducing the villain so late in the book made me not care when they were revealed. I felt like that could’ve been introduced way earlier so the audience could care more about the plot twist.

EDIT: Did some research and she’s actually not British… did anyone reread this before it was published??

I originally heard about this book on TikTok. It was a cute, short, free (with kindle unlimited) read. The burn wasn’t very slow, it was predictable, and some plot points made me roll my eyes, but it was a fun frivolous book that I used to pass the time during night shifts at work!

This was an extremely fun enemies-to-lovers romantasy set at a magical university. The romance has strong Dramione vibes, and the relationship dynamic had excellent chemistry. The plot revolves around a poison being disseminated around campus that increases romantic feelings, and from which only the protagonist seems immune. She finds herself teaming up with her mortal enemy/academic rival to come up with an antidote, while many hijinks ensue along the way. I'd definitely recommend this to romantasy and Dramione fans.
