Just some cozy stories after the big battle in the previous volumes.

I wonder how many days I'd survive if I got a book ban punishment like Lizel. Well, I guess I have the advantage of having an abundance of TV shows and social medias, so it's not a fair comparison. ;)

I always feel so cozy after I finish one of these books.

No big plot points this time; our trio returns from their big anticlimactic adventure, with a good portion of the pages taken up by Lizel's punishment: Gil is furious with him for endangering himself, and restricts him from reading for a full week.

It's a ridiculous little thing, but it's effective, and exactly the type of punishment I had when I was a kid. Not being allowed to read for multiple days at a time is agonizing for a true bookworm, so I fully understand Lizel's growing depression.

Loved, of course, the scene where Lizel finally broke down and went to Gil's bedroom late at night to beg for his forgiveness. Gil even tells him he looks like "a woman who can get anything she wants from a man," before sighing and letting the punishment end a day early. (Eleven, of course, is annoyed he didn't get to witness the breakdown, but he's always a bit of a third wheel with those two, when they get particularly intense about things.)

The relationship between Lizel and Gil is just so interesting. "Single Stroke" is extraordinarily powerful. I don't know if it'll ever be explained why he has inhuman abilities, despite being fully human - I suppose since elves are only female (?) in this world, it's not as though he could have any of that blood in his distant past. But he has utterly devoted himself to Lizel, and even muses to himself that all Lizel had to do at any point was order him to end the book ban. But he doesn't. Lizel respects Gil, and that's what keeps his loyalty intact.

I liked the line at the end, too, with Gil essentially saying that "being monopolized by" - belonging to - Lizel is worth more than any of the difficulties that may come with it. He cares about him so much, and I still! Just want to see some of that attention returned from Lizel's side.

Instead, he gets a little bit flirty with the elves, whose first meeting we finally see in a flashback scene. (Some casual misogyny from Gil there, who has very little interest in women and really only cares about fighting. And Lizel. But who is able to hold his own against elves in battle.)

Basically nothing happened in this volume, but I liked it. It's such a gently-paced story.

There’s a noticeable tonal shift in volume 10 compared to the previous ones, and I’m surprised more readers haven’t mentioned it.

The book-reading ban was hilarious, as expected. We also get the flashback of meeting the people who helped Lizel in the previous volume, along with a short guild commission. But the characterization feels different in a way that’s hard to ignore.

Lizel is no longer simply someone who loves books; now he’s framed as someone who prefers books instead of women. There are multiple “Women shouldn’t…” lines from him in this volume that feel oddly old-fashioned compared to earlier characterization.

The biggest example is Gil. Earlier volumes established that he simply didn’t pay much attention to women at all, like when he ignored the girls talking to him and walked straight toward Lizel instead. Here, though, he says:

“What’s there to do with a woman except sleep with her?”

If that isn’t a tonal shift in characterization, I don’t know what is.

I genuinely enjoyed the first nine volumes, which makes this change more disappointing. Whether this was an attempt to push the series away from BL ambiguity or simply an unintended drift toward more conventional gender dynamics, Lizel and Gil suddenly feel flatter and more stereotypical than they used to.

I enjoyed this volume a lot more than the last few. I particularly loved Lizel's book addiction and how the biggest punishment was for him not to be allowed to read for a week. How depressed he was getting as the week went on was done so well. Hopefully it taught Lizel a lesson to not put himself in danger like that as it upsets his companions.
I didn't love Gil's misogyny and general dislike of women. Seeing the flashback of the meeting of the elves was otherwise interesting.

Not a ton story wise happens in this volume but it was a fun, enjoyable one.

This was a nice little breather after the long arc of the battle. It felt like a collection of vignettes, giving us a bit of insight into their travels. Gil imposed a no-reading ban on Lizel as punishment for his behaviour during the battle, which was surprisingly funny.

I'm looking forward to seeing where volume 11 goes...

A 7-Day Reading Ban is really quite a big punishment for Lizel x,D i feel him so badly.
Also in the context of the whole manga, being def. not a BL and they are all only big bros and best friendies, the sentence "What's there to do with a woman except sleep with it?" "Oh you really don't enjoy womens company, Gil?" ... says everything *snort*

The book ban was so adorable. I just love Gil and Lizel's relationship. It's very sweet. And the way Eleven still wants to see how Lizel is when he struggles is really funny.

Looking forward to volume 11!

This was a great continuation. I loved getting more information about the Elves and their lore. Would have loved to get more of that, but it was still good. I was also fun that Liz was on a book ban. Overall, this was fun... now the long wait for the next volume to be released in English.

The book ban (as in, Lizel can't read for seven days) was upsettingly relatable, but otherwise this series is just chugging along.

This volume was a solid addition to the series, although it didn't feature any major plot developments or action. In my opinion, the most exciting thing that happened was Lizel's reaction to his reading ban XD

I do like this series, but I find it hard to remember what happened in the previous volumes since the releases have been a bit sporadic. I'll continue reading, but I feel like I'm starting fresh every time I pick up the newest installment.
