Hocus My Pocus

Rate this book
If you’ve got it, haunt it…

Once upon a time, I had big ideas, big dreams, and big plans. But when my mother left my kid sister with me when I was only fifteen, I was suddenly the single mother I never thought I’d be. Someone had to raise Torren and show her love and support, the way parents were supposed to love their children, the way our mother never did.

To do so, I had to forget all of my own dreams.

When I dropped Torren off on Megelle Island two years ago, it was finally my time again. Time to chase those plans I’d pushed aside. So I had…until one day I realized I felt empty. That dream job lost all its sparkle. My friends just felt more alien than ever, it was like I woke up one day and forgot how to act human. Because I was a jinn, and even among the supernatural society, I was rare.

Nobody ever told me how lonely rare felt.

So I packed up my stuff and returned to the one place I never should have Megelle Island. An Island hidden from human eyes where supernaturals like me could live freely and peacefully. I didn’t know what my future held I just knew I wanted to see Torren. But when I found her, I found her with a soulmate, a fiancé…an entire life that no longer included me. I’d never felt more lost and confused.

And then I came face-to-face with my ex-boyfriend. The man I’d broken up with ten years ago because he was mortal and I wasn’t. The man I’d broken my own heart over. Except now…he was a vampire, and the rules were all different.

* Halloween Marked is Season FOUR in The Night Realm Series. BUT Hocus My Pocus can be read as a standalone but contains some spoilers for the first three seasons Magic Marked, Christmas Marked, and Court Marked.

Will & Indi

These two are a mess. Neither one know how to stay somewhere for very long. For Indi it runs in the family her mom could barely stay home when her youngest reached a certain age. Indi ended up raising her sister. She took on several jobs so she could get paid under the table. At times they were barely able to afford rent. One summer Indi begged her mother for a break. Her mom told her she would stay home for the summer & watch her sister. This was the summer Indi fell in love & she was so sure this was the guy she wanted to be with forever. However, fate was cruel to her. When she brought him home to meet her mother & sister no one was there. Turns out her mom had lied. She sent her sister to a summer camp in Colorado. Her sister is Torren. She startled easily & then takes forever to calm down. And since they were living in the human realm Torren going to a human camp was a terrible idea! Indi had to go to Colorado then track her sister down because she had runaway from camp. When she found her she was practically starving to death. From then on she decided to never leave her sister with her mom. After Torren got to be a certain age Indi takes her to Megelle Island to see if shifters could help with her shifting. And if not at least she would be safe because there were no humans there. And then Indi starts her adventures in the human realm.

While she is gone she meets a guy in a travel group online. They start chatting & the next thing you know they become best friends. They keep trying to meet but fate is unkind. They both think the other person is human. Indi finally comes home after two years of not seeing her little sister. Just in time to see her sister in the parade.

Will Bow is returning home after being gone for longer than anticipated. Will takes pictures & writes books about traveling for humans & supernaturals. He writes under a pen name. Indi thinks his name is Liam. They both head home for Spooky season. Halloween celebrated over a longer period of time. You would think with a family like the Bows that Will would want to be home more. However, what he comes home to sure makes him want to flee again. He catches his family in the kitchen making him a profile on the supernatural dating app. He watches for awhile before he shuts them down. He also came home for his adopted brother, Bash's first ever birthday party.

Torren's antics really make this book. Of course, you can't leave out the shenanigans of Jimbo & Sal!

Totally unnecessary premise

Did the story need a “You Got Mail” trope plus a second chance trope, oh and a fake dating trope?! No, it did not.
The whole online best friend thing stretched the believability matrix past the limit. It was too big a coincidence, and the FMC and MMC would have to have been brain dead not to make any connections. Also, the story reads better without it. Or if the authors liked it that much, one of the MC needed to be doing it on purpose.
And like every review I have made in this series thus far- where is your editor? Just because a word sounds the same, does not make it the same. Too many typos!!

I really enjoyed Hocus My Pocus. It was such a fun Halloween romp focusing on the second jinn to be back on Megelle Island for the big Halloween celebration. We get an entirely different view of the Halloween hijinks we witnessed in Trick My Treat through the eyes of Willem Bow, aka Liam Arrow and Indi Chase, aka Andi Jones. It is very reminiscent of some of my favorite mid twentieth century rom coms. LaVaun and Montero provide some incredible laughs with this book, and you simply must experience it for yourself-including an inspired interference by Lexington Prescott! Add this to your reading list/collection immediately, so you will be ready for the third book in this series!!!

good

I thought this book was a lot better than the first book in the series. I liked Andy and Liam those two were kind of fun but Indiana and Willem were a little bit ridiculous. Even though they were supposed to be over 30 sometimes I did feel like they were a couple of high school crushes and didn’t know how to deal with themselves. I did think it was kind of funny though that they didn’t know that they were both the same people. I hope the next book in the series is just as good as this one if not better.

Another love story centered around the ongoing and crazy Hallowe’en celebrations on Megelle Island. So many familiar characters pop up as Indi and Will work through their second chance romance to finally find their HEA. Torren’s oopsy transformations continue to delight and there are so many varied activities each day and night, I really want to spend time on this Island of fun, family, friends and magic.

Another great book from Chandelle and Meghan!! The Night Realm series is truly a great read. Yes it's a stand alone but really please read from the beginning because the series is that good!!

We are back on Megelle Island with our beloved characters. It's so nice to see the stories interlock with one another. This season is Halloween time and the royals go full stop! Cannot wait to read the third book when it comes out.

Great Read!

It took me less than a day to binge this! I love Chandelle and Megan’s books! As always, they kept me laughing and entertained! I had wondered about the pink parrot in the last book, and was glad to see its reappearance in this one! Torren’s mishaps always make me chuckle!

Return for wedding

Two travelers return home to the enchanted Island to visit and find it is just in time to attend a family wedding. Old memories come out in both and they don't know if they love or hate each other. Love the interaction of the characters while the family is becoming related to the kings family. Fun read.

Magical island

Megelle Island, inhabited by supernaturals only. A place where they can be themselves, provided there is no violence. Soulmates can only see their soulmate mark while on the Island, and sometimes they can be surprised at who their soulmate is. Like Indi/Andi and Willem/Liam. Full of love and laughs, A wonderful read!

Perfection

I love happy books that just make you feel good even when you want to reach through the pages and slap some sense into the characters because they are udderly clueless. Love love love these characters and hope we continue to have more side character stories to read about.

Loved it!

I just loved reading about Will and Indi! They make such a cute couple. Of course they had their ups and downs but what book would be complete without them. This was another super cute read and I can’t wait for the next in the series! Hopefully next up on the island is Valentine’s Day!!!!

This was a fab read, I loved Torren and it was so good to finally meet her sister Indi. The chemistry and tension between Indi and Will were just so good, I loved the slow revealing of their history and the flashback in Chapter 19 was both beautiful and heartbreaking.
Can't wait to find out whose story we get next!
