A powerhouse of a novel about the indomitable will to survive – and what evil can do to the soul.
Bavaria 1933 and Netanel Rosenberg’s family has lived in Germany for centuries. Their factory keeps a whole town employed.
But when the Nazis take power, Netanel finds himself an outcast and an enemy in his own land.
His battle for survival takes him from Europe to the Holy Land, where everything is sacred - except life.
The Jews want a homeland. The Palestinian Arabs want to keep theirs. They both lay claim by right and by God.
From the horrors of Auschwitz to the ancient alleyways of Jerusalem; from the holocaust to the battle for Palestine, this is a gripping story about the dark side of man.
Fury: Book 1 - Live for Me is a companion book to Fury: Book 2 - Sleeping with the Enemy, which tells the simultaneous story of three Arab brothers living in Palestine.

It starts in the early 1930s in Germany and the beginning of Nazism. There are two young people, a Jewish boy and a non Jewish girl. They go from normal lives and new love through death and concentration camps to the birth of Israel.
... Totul pare sa le fie potrivnic. Si daca iubirea poate suporta multe, corpul si mintea cat rezista?
I felt anger, no I lie.... I felt rage. The story was so haunting in parts. The rage was felt for the prisoners and their treatment. I know this is fiction however you can't deny the history behind it all. CF is a talented writer. Now to go to the next book. Hopefully the next one won't bring me to the brink of tears!
Another great read from Colin who must be one of the best writers of this genre at the moment Love everything he writes about Onto the next one looking forward to book 2
Another fantastic book by Colin Falconer! I wont give any spoliers but I like the approach taken by Falconer. I have read many books about the treatment of Jews during WW2 but the way this is written is very unique. Falconer took a bold, and brave approach . It was very raw, and real. He didnt try to make his characters perfect. He made them human. This does not end in a perfect little package with a bow on it. But it is still a great ending that seems far more realistic.
I also like that Falconer brings up issues such as PTSD, and the way that war and horrific acts effect us . Here we see each person dealing with the atrocities of death camps in their own way. Some become hardened soldiers, while others choose to suppress the things they experienced.
Well done Mr Falconer. this is not a cookie cutter ww2 book in any way.
This will be my next read, and I WILL post a review. I know I wrote a review, but sometimes they disappear. Either my fat fingers pushed the wrong button or Goodreads was experiencing technical difficulties.
This statement above makes no sense. What kind of a stupor was I experiencing? I am not sure I read the book despite my rating it.
Colin Falconer's Fury is a historical novel that tackles the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Set against the backdrop of the late 1930s and early 1940s, the novel explores the human cost of political upheaval through the intertwined lives of two young lovers, Sarah Landauer and Rishou Hass'an.
The story unfolds through the eyes of both Sarah, a Jewish woman escaping persecution in Europe, and Rishou, a Palestinian man witnessing the growing tensions in his homeland. This dual perspective fosters empathy and understanding for both sides of the conflict. Despite the escalating tensions, the novel emphasizes the power of human connection. Sarah and Rishou's forbidden love story highlights the possibility of peace and coexistence amidst the growing divide. Falconer weaves historical events and figures into the narrative, providing a grounded portrayal of the events leading up to the creation of the State of Israel and the subsequent displacement of Palestinians.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a highly sensitive topic. The novel's portrayal may not resonate with everyone, and readers should be prepared for potentially triggering content. While the historical context is important, the core of the novel revolves around Sarah and Rishou's love story. Readers seeking a deeply analytical exploration of the conflict might find the romantic elements overshadow the political realities.
Fury is a thought-provoking novel that challenges readers to consider the human cost of historical events. Falconer's evocative writing captures the beauty and fragility of love amidst the growing animosity. While the subject matter is complex and the ending may be bittersweet, Fury is a valuable read for anyone interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the enduring power of human connection.
A Maelstrom Of Human Insanity, Wickedness, Vitriol…
.. and all the varying degrees of darkness that lead to perpetuity!
This contains large amounts of extremely difficult reading, and I say this as a potential favour to anyone who has either suffered or is very delicate about extreme acts: if you feel it could upset you, please refrain.
I’m not yet sure how the chronological aspects of the characters and their ‘mini-stories’ will play out in the subsequent books of the series, but this is a high quality plot, storytelling & conveyance of atmosphere.
The portrayals of the myriad of behaviours, ethnographic & political propagandistic machineries, death camps, the treatment of human beings as less than nothing, are spine chillingly, tension filled horror!
To read the awful, diabolical & animalistic activities included in these tales, coupled with the skill of the author to make it so dramatic & tense, as well as shine a big light upon history is quite simply deeply moving.
Any more than this, I’ll leave you to your own opinions, other than to say; blood begets blood & will it ever be any different?
A rare book that feels as if it was written in the 1950s.
Tonight I watched HBO "The Survivor" which reminded me of my parents and their stories about their lives and losses at the hands of the Nazis. It was a double hit to the gut, which left me in tears for my father, mother and all the relatives We never met. The horrors of the Concentration Camps, the crippling trauma and unending grief was palpable many times, growing up and listening to thier stories. I would sit and cry, while they talked; as I did watching this movie, reading this book. I guess I needed that trauma bond with my parents.
A brilliant read with characters that jump off the page. A sad journey through the eyes of a German Jew taking the reader through the rising of the nazi party, the horrors of Auschwitz and finishing in the early days of the formation of Israel. Really gets to grips with how people are changed by war and how the damage effects their future lives. Also some useful history on Britain's behaviour in relation to Palestine which has prompted me to want to learn more about this post-war period.
It could not have been a more timely read for me with Israel and Hamas going to war. It is an interesting take on the Auschwitz survivor's mental outlook and desire for a homeland that was ostensibly promised to them by God. Sounds good, right? There it is, Palestine, the promised land. Problem is...Arabs live there and have lived there for two thousand years. I'm very much looking forward to the second book from the Palestinian perspective.
This is an amazing story. I couldn’t put it down a real page turner. The characters were wonderfully drawn, you feel you know them. It’s all set against an awful time in history. Man’s inhumanity to man is even now being repeated. This is a story about love, hate and undying resistance. I will never forget Netanel and Marie’s story. It will stay with me for a long time. Please read this, especially now.
A tricky one to rate. The two thirds was a 5* the last third a 2*. Look, history is history, but it was more that the book changed stylistically. A new protagonist was introduced very late in the game. It was not an enjoyable device, but an important one to make a point.
This book was not supposed to end happy and complete.
Either way it was relevant and worthwhile. Looking forward to book two.
This is the first book I’ve read by Colin Falconer, and it didn’t disappoint. It was a timely read given the ongoing conflict current being waged in Israel between the Jews and Palestinians. While I’ve read a few non-fiction books about these events, Falconers book, Fury Part 1” in many ways brings this conflict to life giving it a more human dimension. I eagerly anticipate reading Part 2.
I wish I had access to the authors notes on Fury 1 and Fury 2. It would have prepared me for his bare knuckle and brutal writing of the idyllic life in Bavaria before WWII that descended into the unspeakable, inhuman and blood curdling treatment of the Jews. All according to interviews of survivors. I cannot say I like this book because of that; nonetheless, It happened and is well written.
Not an easy book to read. The fascinating story of what happened to a German Jew who was thrown into Auschwitz during the early days of WW11 his survival and his eventual escape and journey to Israel and its fight for independence all makes for an amazing story but a quite harrowing one.
A dramatic realistic read. The lead up to and the atrocities of the Nazi Concentration camps bought vividly to life. Paints a truly tragic picture of that era of Jewish history. The fight for a Jewish Homeland also vividly painted in words, outlines the struggle the Jewish people had, to establish Israel. Colin Falconer does not fail to deliver a thrilling read
Brilliant book. Tells all about the atrocities that happened in the concentration camps and how badly the Jews were treated and still are to this present day. The one thing I would have liked was a little more depth as skipped big chunks of time and I would have liked to have gone deeper with the characters.
Objective and Informative. Excellent story telling.
Colin manages to reflect on historical events in a manner that leaves one thinking deeply about current events objectively and free from emotional and cultural bias.
In my opinion, these works and the method of sharing facts, should form the basis of exploring history and learning from it.
This gives a bit of an insight to what the concentration camps might have been like ... and it's horrible, it's even hard to read in some parts. The mental scaring for those that survived is well shown in this book and it will always keep you thinking of just how bad these camps where.
I think this is Falconer’s finest work to date. I love his swashbucklers, but this story is so important and compelling. It’s also a not-so-distant mirror of where we could go today. I’d like for every lover of freedom to read and think about this book long after they turn the last page. It’s never a bad thing to be entertained while learning nuanced history. Well done.
While there are many aspects of this book, the characters don't have much depth. When loved ones died it was brushed over by them. I also felt disappointed in the ending. Happy reading!
Thoroughly enthralling story of the holocaust and birth of Israel. Have read a few holocaust novels, this is one of the better ones.Well researched, would have been 5stars but felt the ending left characters in limbo.
The story of the holocaust told from the Jewish perspective, will make you understand the horrors that can never be forgotten! Also the lasting emotional devastation of the death camps in Europe!
I started reading with some reservations but found the story to be compelling, fair, insightful and a guide to understanding the current crisis in that beleaguered land. The last line says it all, "We become what we hate." George William Russell
