Chaos of Esta Anderson #1

A Dream of Death and Magic

Rate this book
If only we could choose who we fall in love with. I might have known better then. But he smiles at me again, our eyes meet, and I think that I’m dumb enough to have chosen him anyway.

My life is missing something.

Shouldn't there be… more to, well, everything? My plans of being a photographer aren’t exactly going as I thought, either. But I will change at least the latter this summer, I'm just not sure how. Inspiration has been a bit of a bitch lately.

Oh, I'm also a lucid dreamer and know my dreamscape better than my actual neighbourhood. So, when one day I find this strange obsidian void lake in my dreams, I can’t just pretend it's not there. Something has to happen if I jump in, right? It wouldn’t make me feel so seen and strangely whole if it were nothing.

Except, that’s exactly what happens: nothing. At least at first. But then…

Who knew the world is so full of fairies and vampires and werewolves and demons and— Magic? Well, obviously they did, but I'm finally seeing the world as it really is for the first time. And with that new insight comes all the photography inspiration I've been waiting for!

Except, it turns out the Veiled are hiding for a reason. They’ve seen war before, and if I'm not careful, my enthusiasm and curiosity could start a new one. Some of the Veiled are ancient, they remember the last battle…

And they know just how to turn my lucid dreams into my worst nightmares.

A Dream of Death and Magic is the first book in a planned ten-book paranormal urban fantasy slow-burn romance.

I received an advance reader copy of A Dream of Death and Magic for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Lucid dreaming is excellent fodder for a fantasy story and one that Sarina Langer has brought to the fore with A Dream of Death and Magic. There's more to the story, with its fantastical elements extending into the real world, friendships and a slow-burn romance.

Like so many fantasy stories, this is the first part of a series, Chaos of Esta Anderson: the first of what is planned to be a ten-part epic. If you're wary of jumping into a book that promises many more entries to come, don't be: this stands on its own without feeling like you will need another nine volumes to complete the story. While it's abundantly clear there's a lot more story to tell, the book feels like a complete experience. It promises there's more to come, and while elements are planted for further development, it doesn't diminish the story that's here.

The novel is a fairly brisk read, and the author uses the space judiciously, weaving together an urban fantasy that spends a fair amount of time in the dream world, explores the protagonist, Esta, and her world, as well as develops her friendships. Esta, who finds herself more at home in dreams than in the real world, discovers an obsidian lake in her dream and dives in. After she awakens, she discovers the real world contains many mysteries surrounding supernatural beings (or the "Veiled," as they prefer to be called), including fairies, werewolves and vampires.

The plot moves slowly, gradually unveiling the mysteries about the Veiled and the dream realm. Without ever feeling too slow, the book uses this pace to explore its characters, build the world and mysteries and develop its romance, while building towards a conflict with a figure from her dreams, the Dreamcatcher, and the mythological bringer of nightmares, the Mara.

While the plot will satisfy fans of urban fantasy, mythology and the power of dreams, the greatest joy the book brings is in its characters. While Esta is the protagonist and point of view character, the supporting characters are a joy: Bonnie and Kate provide support for Esta in tough times while also standing on their own; Leverett is a mysterious presence filled with humanity. We also get non-human, don-Veiled characters, Esta’s dog, Lady, and her feline companion in the dream world, Mischief, a constant source of delight.

Underpinning these characters is Esta, who the plot revolves around as she serves as the novel’s sole point of view character. Constantly engaging and always relatable, Esta is thoroughly enjoyable. The novel is written in the first person; absolutely delightful as the reader follows Esta through her adventures, presented with a sparkling wit throughout.

The author uses this perspective to explore the world, juztaposing the heightened reality in the dream world with the mundane reality of the real world. As the book unveils the Veiled, it does so with a sense of magic. As the book moves towards its climax, the author brings a sense of dread, while also conveying the horror of wars past, the spectre of which colour the story.

The wit within Esta’s narration carries over to the dialogue. The characters all sound unique and their distinct voices bounce off each other well. This is a book that features humans, supernatural beings and mythological figures, with each character sounding like it fits the archetype while feeling natural.

As an added bonus at the end of the book, the author has included a guide to lucid dreaming for readers. If the book captures your imagination about this and you feel like giving it a try, it is a great primer with some easy to follow steps to start your journey.

As an urban fantasy, A Dream of Death and Magic checks all the right boxes. Its infusion of romance will entertain fans of the genre, and the dream world Esta explores adds a wonderful extra dimension. The real joy here, though, is in its characters, particularly Esta and her point of view guiding the reader through the story.

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy issued by the author. It is available to pre-order, release on September 2nd.

A DREAM OF DEATH AND MAGIC is a little out of my comfort zone; although I read urban and high fantasy, they are not my go-to. Having said that, this felt rather a unique, individual story, and I was drawn very quickly to the world of Esta Anderson and all the chaos that is about to ensue.

Esta Anderson is a young woman with a passion for photography. Through her ability to lucid dream, she finds herself stepping from the shadows into a world surrounded by the Veiled — fairies and vampires, werewolves and demons. But with her newfound knowledge comes a genuine threat that could jeopardise everyone's existence.

This is the first on a ten-book series, although it stands well on its own. If the prospect of embarking on such a series worries you, don't let it. Although the author sets up so much more story and characters to come, the tale within this book has a completeness with the turn of the last page.

This is a relatively quick read with a must-read-on feeling from the first chapter. With a beautiful slow-burn romance building (I think I've fallen in love too), this book is full of wonderful, diverse characters, great dialogue and vivid, well-written scenes. Although I know the author to be a meticulous writer of epic worlds, I loved this book far more than I imagined.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Highly recommended.

I read an advanced copy of this one. Many thanks to the author!

I'll begin by saying that paranormal urban fantasy isn't my go to choice, but I've read all of Sarina's other books and she hasn't disappointed me once. In this one we meet Esta, librarian by day, thwarted photographer, and, most importantly, a lucid dreamer. This ability becomes the lynch pin of the story and I really liked how this was the unique thread binding the events of the book together.

Esta discovers the world of the Veiled - vampires and fairies and other paranormal beings. But there is darkness lurking in this shadowed realm, and Esta finds herself thrown into the legacy of war and the real possibility she may lose herself in the fight.

Written in engaging first person it's hard not to root for Esta, and the characters (of all kinds) that inhabit her world. And if you're a hard core fan of slow burn romance you are going to fall madly in love.

A captivating start to a planned ten book series!

I'm not a huge fan of urban fantasy and generally this was no exception. However Sarina always has such terrific characters and interesting plots that it kept me hooked regardless. I loved the dreams and of course Mischief. The descriptions of the places in the dreams were neat, especially the lake. I also got a little creeped out sometimes which is always a good thing!!
Esta was a little bit stupid with her desire for a photography project involving those who wish to remain hidden but I also understand the zeal for a passionate project one has blinding their rational side so that was very realistic. Which is a compliment to the author! If Esta had dismissed the project right away I would have been unsatisfied. The characters actions made sense which is 👍

I'll end the review by saying if anything ever happens to Lady I am rioting.

Paranormal made mundane with an insufficient hint of a vamp-human romance - not my cuppa

I loved the cover, but when nothing had happened by page 70 and chapter 7, I was disinclined to keep reading. It’s probably me and my preference for jumping straight into the melee of action-adventure and there being none here. It starts with a dream of a lake and progresses into art-dabbling occult practitioners everyday life with friends and dogs and pricey occult books. Esta works at a gallery, has a cat called Mischief and a BFF Kate who is a witch. Since the FMC and the entire book wakes up when she meets a vamp, then the long setup is purposeful - to show off the dull mundane life bordering on the depressive of someone who believes she is destined for greater things, I guess. The feels of the FMC are morbid and maudlin - “I’ve always been drawn to graveyards”, hello? I did like the idea of the non-human races being called the Veiled and nightmares being separate magical beings.

If you don’t mind a veeery long setup and subdued minor tone of the intro, you might like it, but it’s not for me. Despite some excitement halfway things do not really change later in the book. I mean the librarian-bookkeeper with a cool name of Leverett who doles out books for the price of a conversation was intriguing. And there it is at page 79/225: “Do vampires dream?” And 50% in the romantic feels are ignited off of lengthy conversation, proving that women fall in love with their ears. But the subdued tone was getting me down and I just couldn’t, so I skimmed til the end to get an overview and a better feel. Doubt I’ll continue with the series.

This was an interesting book that weaved fantasy in a lucid dreaming environment to make a very fantastic story. the characters were dynamic and the story was fast-paced and adventuresome. I am so ready to read the next book in the series and I highly recommend this book to read.

I've read a lot of fantasy, both urban and high, and I this book has some truly unique takes on common (but beloved) tropes--how the protagonist discovers their power, baddies and how said baddies exercise their power, and how it's all resolved. The budding romance is delightful and well-earned (no insta-love here) and the characters are so much fun to follow. I fully enjoyed this book and I'm really excited for the books that are yet to come in the series.

It’s an ok read. 3/4 of the book mostly about herself talk. There’s not much happening and kinda boring after sometime.

Not going to lie, "A Dream of Death and Magic" by Sarina Langer helped me to FINALLY put a finer point on what I mean when I say I need a cozy read.

And it's helped CONSIDERABLY with my writing slump!

When I say I need a "cozy read," it's not always about nothing bad happening or there not being a high amount of stress or upheaval. I feel that cozy is more in how much support the MC has, both to give and receive, and how that helps them through the difficulties in the plot. How many moments to breathe there were. How there were true safe spaces within the book for the MC to enjoy. I could never figure out exactly how to explain what I meant until I read this book.

We have Esta Anderson, a lucid dreamer, who finds herself one day with the ability to see beyond the mundane surface of the world around her. She is immediately inspired and excited; she wants to share this with the world. However, even just thinking of exposing something that many hold so dear, that has kept a peace that is often tenuous at best, puts her in real danger.

The difference here is that Esta has support all around her. Her bestie and found family sister that she lives with; the kind and knowledgeable witch next door; the handsome, quiet vampire who owns a bookshop downtown. All of them are with her and support her, even when they might not agree with her (heck, there were times *I* was frustrated with her LOL). They were there for her, and although this story was not light on tension or danger or stakes, there was still something about it that held me spellbound, assuring me that I was safe.

I really enjoyed it, and I think others will too, so if magic, mystery, and the beginnings of an adorable slow-burn romance (that the author promises will get spicy as the series continues) are your thing, I'd grab myself a copy of this book (especially because it appears to be available via Hoopla!).

I enjoyed reading Esta's journey in her dreams. I loved how the author created the relationships and scenery in the book. I look forward to reading more.

I can't wait to see Esta and Bonnie kick ass!.

I received an advanced reader copy of A Dream of Death and Magic for free in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get through the entirety of the book. After reading the first 46%, I found myself detached from the main character and her story.

Esta is a lucid dreamer who discovers that there's more to the world than she originally thought. But when this happens, it felt like she accepted everything too easily, and the supporting characters were all happy, cheerful, one-note characters without much substance. Esta herself only really appeared to be driven by her desire for a photography project.

I was intrigued by the concept of lucid dreaming, and looked forward to the romance initially mentioned at the beginning of the book blurb. But by the halfway point, there were no romantic interests introduced. Also, Esta's lucid dreaming miraculously held memories of a past that wasn't hers without any explanation as to how it relates to her or why it is hidden in her subconscious. All-in-all, there was far too much time spent inside Esta's head and descriptions of what was going on rather than actual experiences for me.

This is a really intriguing magical realism novel with some pretty interesting worldbuilding that leans towards urban fantasy. Esta has lucid dreams and one night she comes across something new: a black lake. After immersing herself in the lake, she wakes up to find she can see magical beings who've been living among us, hiding under glamours to make them appear human. Now that Esta can see through their spells, what will she do with the information?

A group of magical beings, terrified of the power this new knowledge lends her, take over her dreams and turn them into nightmares. While in the waking realm, Esta makes new friends despite her social ineptitude and strives to find a way to appease the creatures who conjure her nightmares and won't let her sleep.

This novel reads like the gentle swell of the ocean tide. It's slow paced and very dreamlike, lending itself well to the subject matter. There's also a lot of focus on the foundation underlying humanism, that openness, tolerance and the attempt to understand the other is better than intolerance, segregation and "othering". It's a worthy message packaged into an interesting read.

This is the first I've read from Sarina Langer and it was definitely unique. I have never read anything similar. I loved that, although always describing herself as socially awkward, Esta had a close group of friends at the ready to help and support her as well as her flat mate 'sister' whose been her friend since childhood. My reason for four stars and not five was that, although written in the first person (my favourite writing style) there was so much internal dialogue from the MC all about her thoughts and feelings, which is fine but I didn't get a great picture of the setting or any world building. I couldn't tell you what any of the characters look like either and I always like to picture the story as it unfolds which I found really hard to do with this book. I am totally dedicated to continue Esta's journey into her dream world and hopefully some romance with Leverett!

This looks to be an incredible series. The author has done an amazing job with the world building and the storyline just hooks you from the get go right up till the very end. Set in a fantasy world of lucid dreaming we meet Esta Anderson who feels that her life is lacking in something. She has no idea about the Incredible world of supernatural and magic and as a photographer once she discovers it she wants to record it all. The story is well written, the beings are beautifully explained and it’s a fantastical place to discover. You find the pace quite easy going to start with but that does change as the book progresses and the suspense and the tension builds and builds until the end. And now I would like the next book please.

A Dream of Death and Magic is book one in the series. This book is fantastic! I would absolutely recommend this book be added to your TBR!! This book is so well written, the characters and details are phenomenal. I was so into this book I think I was driving my family crazy by the amount of times I told them they really need to read this book lol.. The FMC has lucid dreams and ends up waking up more aware.... I'm not saying more because I don't want to spoil this book. I am so excited this is a series! I can't wait to read more!! This is also a new to me author and I am so happy I got my hands on this book. I loved it so much I went ahead and got book 2 and preordered book 3! I hope to also get the physical books to add to my shelfs in the future!

I received a ARC version of A Dream of Death and Magic and am leaving my review voluntarily. Thank you to Zoe and Sarina for sending me this book.

I enjoyed this book, and loved the premise of the story. The FMC was relatable, and I liked the way you learnt about the veiled world at the same time as Esta. Making it easy to understand and follow.

I also love mischief and so glad the dreamcatcher didn’t unalive them forever! Any familiar/animal is a winner for me!

I do feel like the sudden realisation that she has fallen in love with Leverett was a bit rushed, and the author could have developed this a bit slower, making you crave more from their interactions.

Overall I enjoyed this story and rate it 3.5 stars and will read the next one!

I loved this! It was a really different take on fantasy with Esta's lucid dreaming taking such a huge role in the introduction of the magical world.

Even thought it's the first of a planned series, the ending doesn't feel cliffhanger-y. And I'm excited for this slow-burn romance. The romantic interest doesn't come in until halfway though the book and its still just heating up. I love it, because a thirty-year-old woman getting used to such a big change in her life wouldn't be falling immediately into another person's arms.

Langer is also super funny. There were multiple times that I laughed out loud after a one-liner from Esta. I'm excited to continue the series.

This book is definitely an original. What is “normal” really? Are there beings that share Earth with us? Esta is questioning her life, is there anything she is missing? One night she has dreams that … What is happening to her dreams are merging into her reality. Kate her best friend may have some answers. The very detailed story beginning sets the stage for the twists and the unexpected that follows. I am a sucker for a book that is unpredictable plus being well written. This book is so unexpected you just have to read to get the full impact. Be prepared to have your socks knocked off, enjoy.

This Bookfunnel ARC is 🤯 in a good way.

Very enjoyable book. Started off a little slow but before too long picked up and got very enticing. Esta is on a journey of discovery in more ways than one and she is open to all that she sees and all that is around her. The dream catcher is there to slow her role but with the help of Bonnie,Kate and Leverette and of course Lady and Mischief she is able to push through the fear and persuade the guardians of The Veiled she means no harm.

I enjoyed this book very much! I definitely recommend reading this one. What's nice about this series is that yes, you can read this one and never read the rest of the series. There is no cliffhanger at the end, so if you love this book but don't want to dive down 10 books. That's ok, too. You also don't have to worry about forgetting what happened in book 1. I know I forget what I read about fairly quickly, so it's nice not having to remember details later. I can't wait to see what happens in book 2. The writing was amazing. I forgot that I was reading.

From the jump those book had me fully immersed in Esta's world (both dream and real life). I connected with all of the main characters and the adorable pup from the beginning. This was also one of those books that I couldn't stop thinking about when I wasn't able to read it. This book was so good overall, and I can't wait to read more in this series! Please don't gloss over the end of the book about lucid dreaming! it's well worth the read!

I received this copy as an advance read and give my review freely. Esta Anderson’s life is turned upside down as magic and chaos come into her everyday life. I loved every character in this story, as well as the balance between Esta’s life and her discoveries.

This book felt a little odd for me in the beginning but it got better and better as the story moved, and I literally couldn’t put it down from the halfway point.

Great world building, great plot but it took me a while to focus on the story.
This is the first book of a series, if you like to read about fantasy romance, you’ll like this book.
If you only read this first one book, you’re obviously going to feel like a lot of information is missing, it is great for a first book but I hope for more development in the other books.

It has an interesting premise with the female lead lucid dreams. I haven't read anything with lucid dreams, sure, dream walkers and similar yes, but not lucid dreams that could potentially become your worst nightmares. If you want a spin on dreams you might enjoy Esta's journey of discovering herself and the magical creatures around her.

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this! The atmosphere of the book gave me eerie vibes…but also this intriguing world building that centered on lucid dreams? I enjoyed how the plot unraveled and the development of the characters. Esta was an amazing character to root for! AND OOF THAT SLOW BURN ROMANCE? Cherry on the cake.

3.5/5 STARS! This is so neat and unique. Loved how the dreams/lucid dreaming was included in the supernatural and paranormal world. You don't see that too much. Also found this an easy & quick read, very well written for young adult & adult. I'm definitely sold on whereever this is going and can't wait to check out book 2. Great starter book for what sounds like a cool world.

So, the first book in this new series and it’s certainly different to what I was expecting that’s for for sure. It’s a subject I am assuming doesn’t get written about very much but as you can see from when I finished it it’s a fascinating tale. Recommended.
