As love and faith collide, Lydia must choose between forgiveness and the quest for justice.
Lydia bat Joseph dreamed of escaping her cramped family home to explore the world, but tradition and familial expectations kept her bound to her role.
When her oldest brother’s radical teachings and miraculous deeds reveal Jesus as the Messiah, Lydia exchanges her self-centered life for one devoted to serving others. While aiding new converts in Jerusalem, she falls deeply in love with Stephen, a devoted deacon whose humble spirit and bright eyes capture her heart.
Tragedy strikes before their vows are complete when local Pharisees murder Stephen, evading justice under the guise of religious duty. With her beloved taken from her, Lydia is left grappling with her faith and her path forward. Will she cling to the teachings of forgiveness her brother shared, or will she abandon her faith in search of justice for her fallen love?
Experience the journey of love, loss, and faith that ignited growth in Lydia, Book 5 of the Servant Siblings series.
Jenifer Jennings writes Historical novels that immerse readers in ancient worlds filled with Biblical characters and faith-building stories. Coming to faith in Jesus at seventeen, she spends her days falling in love with her Savior through the study of His Word. Jenifer has a Bachelor’s in Women’s Ministry and graduated with distinction while earning her Master’s in Biblical Languages. When she’s not working on her latest book, Jenifer can be found on a date with her hardworking husband or mothering their two children.
The story of Lydia, written in the style depicting Biblical days in a fictional way, brought the story to life for me. Even though it is a work of fiction, I felt that Biblical times came through well.
There were places within the story that brought joy to my heart and also persecution that brought me to tears. The story is well-written and the characters are well-represented. Highly recommended. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
The story of Lydia has made me a new fan of Biblical fiction. Jenifer Jennings's telling of Lydia's story took me on a roller coaster of emotions. Laughter. Tears. Outrage. Happiness. And More. As I read, I came to love the character Lydia and the others who played integral roles in her life. The depiction of this era in the early years after Jesus's resurrection and ascension was woven into the story seamlessly. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story and found the insights into the people, customs, and daily life very interesting. I highly recommend this book, "Lydia," this series, and this author.
I have read this book and giving my honest review. Wow what a powerful book. Made me cry in one part, sadness but later joy. This is another book in the series, beautiful and I am not spoiling. You must read this for yourself. I had to read from start to finish amazing.
Excellent book! I loved reading Lydia's story. The writing is fantastic, and the characters are very realistic. Lydia enjoys her animals and finds solace in talking to them about her day. When she is troubled, she often seeks their company for comfort rather than the company of people.
Reading about Stephen's stoning was very heartbreaking but also beautiful. Jenifer took a difficult (sad) passage of Scripture and wove a very touching story. The entire book was great reading, but that particular passage really stayed with me.
Once again we are immersed in the very beginnings of the early church after the death and resurrection of Jesus. This is book 5 in the Servant Siblings series.Lydia is the second oldest daughter, a hard worker who finds it easier to talk to the villa's animals than to other people. She has even given them Biblical names. Once again, we gain insight into the struggles of the disciples and their followers, the need to provide for so many, the need for the means to provide for them. We also are given a view into them as family men. We know from Scripture that Peter was married. His mother in law was healed by Jesus. So why would they not have families, loved ones, or future plans. We are given insight into just how much they left behind in order to follow Jesus and follow His command to spread His Good News. This really hits home as we read Lydia and Stephen's story. Yes, it is fiction, but Stephen was of an age to have been betrothed. We do know that he was one of the seven chosen to aid the disciples In caring for the needy and a godly man. Unfortunately, we know that there is no happily ever after for these two. I have to admit that I could not bring myself to read the chapter of Stephen's death right away. I knew how Lydia's heart would be broken along with all who knew Stephen. Did the disciplines realize that this was a harbinger of their own futures? How far is Lydia willing to go to seek revenge? Is forgiveness possible for her actions? This book gave me so much to think about beyond the basic story. As mentioned before, how much did the early followers give up to follow in the Way? Did they know how they would suffer for their faith? Just how much can be forgiven by Our Lord? Is everyone capable of being redeemed? I received this eBook from the author. These are my own opinions.
These “siblings books”, such as Lydia are so amazingly inspiring and insightful as to what it would have been like to be a sibling of our Lord, JESUS! This book about a younger sibling, who felt more affinity with her animal friends than the humans in her life, really shows how Jesus can take anyone away from their insecurities and feelings of inadequacy and make them vibrant and full of hope and love! This was such a powerful, moving story, and I don’t want to give away the details, for the reason that YOU need to read this book and find out all of the beautiful words written in it! The clashes between the siblings, how other followers of The Way interact with Jesus’ family and sooo much more are all in this beautiful book. Once I started the novel, I didn’t want to stop until I finished it, but I have had many doctor appointments, etc. I so wish I had been able to write a review sooner! You really do want to read this, as well as the other “Siblings” books. I haven’t found one that I didn’t fall in love with, yet, and don’t expect to, either! If you want to feel as though you are THERE, get this book. It’s full of every emotion known to us and I just can’t say enough good things about it. Definitely recommend to EVERYONE! 5 🌟 book! I was given a copy to read by the author, so that I could write my own opinion in this review.
What a powerful and moving book this was for me! This series of stories is told from a unique perspective—from the viewpoint of Jesus’ brothers and sisters. Ms. Jennings’ skill as an author was evident throughout, bringing the characters to life, and helping me better understand the many difficulties that the early Christians (or Followers of the Way) faced after Jesus’ resurrection. I was totally immersed in the story from start to finish!
Lydia was shown in all her humanity, bringing home the clear message that even Spirit-filled believers can be led astray, and desperately need to stay close to their Savior in order to stay pure in their daily walk. Knowing that we can have God’s complete forgiveness when we fall prey to sin, and find hope for the future are gifts too wonderful for words!
Many thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this latest book in the Servant Siblings series. I had not read the previous books in the series when I started this one, but that didn’t prevent me from enjoying and gaining tremendous inspiration from this book. I will most certainly go back and read the rest of the stories.in this series.
Lydia by author is Book 5 in her Servant Siblings series. This Biblical fiction is about Jesus’s sister, Lydia’s the second oldest daughter. She loves the animals in the villa and has given each one a name from scripture. The animals listen to her troubles and secrets daily as she care for them.
The author has written a poignant book using her imagination on what might have happened. She has created a deep friendship between Stephen and the members of Jesus’ family. Lydia is especially fond of him.
We know from scripture what happens to Stephen. The author expertly pens her perspective of what might have happened. This is an emotional chapter to read. My heart broke for those that loved Stephen, especially Lydia.
There are many Christian and life lessons tucked inside this story. It would make a nice reader group choice to be followed by a Bible Study. I highly recommend this book, and rate it 5 stars. A copy was provided by the author, but these are my honest words.
First of all, keep in mind this is a fictional story. That being said the story could have happened?
I read this book in one day, I couldn’t put it down. I stopped writing reviews because I felt pressured to do so. The authors always wanted me to write something about the book. What if I didn’t like the story? Would I be the one to crush the hard work of the author? I write this because I truly enjoyed reading the book.
Lydia is a sister of Jesus, her mother is Mary. Now in my Bible, it doesn’t talk much about the siblings. The bible is about God and Jesus. Yes there are other stories of people in the book.
What would you feel if your brother was the saviour? You lived through it and watched him heal people, raising the dead. Only to watch him being crucified.
You would have probably felt the same as her.
There’s way more to the story. I can’t wait to read about Simon ..
Jenifer Jennings has written a page turning novel about Jesus’ sister Lydia. The atmosphere in Jerusalem after the death and resurrection of Jesus is so skillfully written that the emotions and family dynamics give you the feeling of looking into a window watching these lives unfold. Thorough research and a gift for words make this novel a five star. Lydia is complex and her story will take you on a journey of emotions from joy to sorrow and back. Stephen’s story could lead to tears, but it is balanced by smiles and feelings of joy later. Lydia’s love of animals and her pets added to the fun aspects of this story. She also has a faith journey that many might identify with. I highly recommend this book and the other books in this series.
I thought that this book was well done and it did a good job giving us a glimpse into what life was like for those who followed Christ after his death and Resurrection. I also liked that this story showed us what it would have been like to be in Jerusalem when Stephen was martyred. I liked how the author gave us an intimate picture of Lydia and Stephen being engaged and how hard his death would have been for someone close to him. I also liked how she showed Lydia learning to deal with her grief and seeking forgiveness. I liked seeing the growth in her character.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Lydia: Captivating 1st Century Biblical Novel (Servant Siblings Book 5), my fourrteenth read from Christian author Jenifer Jennings. A 178-page well-written fictionalized expansion of Biblical times. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I'll definitely be reading more from this author and look forward to Jenning's next book, Simon: Captivating 1st Century Biblical Novel (Servant Siblings Book 6) when it's published in October later this year. RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Deep dive into the “prickly” sister reveals what’s really going with the “middle child” and why she is the way she is. Heartbreaking (because you know what is coming) look at what Stephen’s life might have been before it all went sideways and how it affected those who loved him in the aftermath. Author is doing a really good job of making readers really hate Saul. It will be interesting to see how she handles the conversion news that signs indicate must be coming soon…and teasing the next installment with Simon in the lead.
I really had a hard time reading this one, I cry every time that I read the stoning of Stephen in the Bible, and then I read it in this book! I was able to learn some about Lydia, one of Jesus’ sisters, and her relationship with Stephen. I didn’t know anything about Lydia, in fact, not much about any of Jesus’ siblings, other than James and Jude. It was nice to read this book, and learn more of the life of the Followers of Jesus, the Way Followers! Thank you Jenifer for another wonderful book!
I so enjoyed this book, perhaps because I had a goat as a best friend when I was a child. I hid in the background too until Jesus showed me that He saw me, understood me and deeply loved me. Despite doing something terrible in the midst of her deep grief Lydia was loved and received into the heart of the brethren in Jerusalem and given a hope and a future. Something Jesus has prepared for us all as we seek Him and trust in His ways.
I read the books in this series of he siblings of Jesus except This one. This latest one had the story of the stoning of Stephen. Even though there's fiction woven in with the historical facts of Paul's persecution of the followers of Jesus, it still has enough Bible to make it interesting. Goodness, those were awful times. Much like the times Israel has faced since Oct 7th.
I have read all of the Servant Siblings books by Jenifer Jennings. I was not looking forward to Lydia because from the other four books I kind of saw her as selfish. Wow was I wrong, this is one of the best in the series. Lydia turns out to be so real and honest. I felt her pain at Stephens death. I am glad I read this one.
This is another fictional story of one of Jesus' siblings. I love how the author lets you dive into the context of those times. Though sometimes you already know what is going to happen because you know the story from the Bible, it brings the characters to life and helps to imagine the story with more empathy. Great read.
Author Jenifer Jennings writes Historical fiction immersing the reader in a faith building story through various Biblical characters. It is fiction but fleshes out the characters and enables the reader to get a clearer glimpse into Biblical times. A sibling of Messiah Jesus, Lydia has become betrothed to Stephen, a faithful follower of the Way. The Pharisees murder Stephen before he and Lydia complete their vows. When Lydia is forced to choose a path, she must select either the forgiveness her brother taught or seek revenge. I enjoy the Biblical fiction genre. It consistently sends me back to my Bible. I received a complimentary copy from the author. The opinions are my own.
"Lydia" tells the story of one of Jesus' sisters in the post-Pentecost era. Lydia and the majority of her family are living in the home of Theophilus as the early church grows. While her brothers are involved in ministry, her life seems quite boring in comparison. She's stuck at home, making meals, while every other young woman she knows is either getting married or having babies. Then Stephen walks into her life, and nothing is the same. An engagement quickly follows, but a happily ever after is not what awaits Lydia. Will Lydia be able to forgive or will bitterness destroy her?
For the first half of the book, Lydia is a pretty annoying and whining character. She is rather self-absorbed about her troubles and spends her time talking them out with her animals. The events that take place with Stephen's death force Lydia to grow as a person and in her faith.
Overall, this is a lovely story. I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I love this series and anxiously awaiting each book! This one was a unique take on Lydia and pairs her with Stephen. It’s always hard for me to read books that center around Stephen because we all know how that turns out. But Jenifer skillfully weaves the story so that through the pain you see the victory!
