The weakest Ranstrom I’ve read thus far. I liked Elise (aka Daphne) well enough, but Hunt was a moron who took 2/3rds of the book to guess what should’ve been blindingly obvious re: the nature of Elise’s marriage, & another half of the remaining third to understand who the underlying villain was. I mean, hellooooo…who’s been the common thread time & again? Who’s always poking his nose into everything? Duuuuuh, could it be ____?? 🙄
It’s always a clue to your hero’s lack of appeal when 1) his sister is smarter than he is (i.e. Sarah from SAVING SARAH), 2) past book heroes are smarter than he is (i.e. Ethan (Sarah’s husband)), & 3) future book heroes are more observant AND sexier than he is (i.e. Drew from LORD LIBERTINE).
…Yeah, I didn’t cotton to Hunt at all, in case that wasn’t clear. 😇
Anyway. The pacing felt off, with an incredibly slow first half & breakneck final quarter. Also, I really didn’t GAF about the treasonous papers or the conveniently vague pirate-harboring town, which means I was pushing onward for Elise’s plot & ignoring most of Hunt’s side hustle—not a great recipe for reading happiness. But, again, if I’d liked Hunt better I might’ve tolerated his sideplot, & vice versa. *shrug*
I give it 3 stars because it’s Ranstrom, & I like how she very deliberately utilizes both the elegance & the violence of the Regency upper-crust to tell her stories. But it’s definitely not her best.
This book lost me when the widow-on-the-run-disguised-as-a-Caribbean-baker was invited to the Governor's ball, and no one thought anything of it. I'm not sure I'd say I read the rest of the book (it was more of a quick can-this-be-real flick through), so I may be doing it an injustice, but neither plot nor characterisation seemed to gain in depth after that rocky start.
Hahahahaha. My friend and I read this as a joke and the sad thing is I made it through completely... This book was ridiculous. However, it is a romance. As far as romance books go, this was decent. If you are someone who likes well-written books with a solid plot and a new vision, Indiscretions is not for you.
I docked a star because after great pacing, the story just went hell for leather at the end. Still, really really enjoyed this one! Definitely will read this author again.
