Okay... At the start of the book, it's bad and really needed to force myself into reading this book, but I hung on. Initially, about by the half of the book however, it starts to work out and John gets into the flow of the book. The issue with most of the initial part of the book is worldbuilding, and the intense technical descriptions of the tech in the book. Overall I feel you should be able to tell and sell the tech by not getting too technical. I don't think he served, so getting the military part was more of a cliche fest than actual storywriting in my opinion. However, once you get to the middlish of the book things seems to work out better storytelling-wise. I mean it's a decent book, but you gotta hold on as by the end you like it so far. I can't read the 4 and 6 missions because it's sold out, but I think if he continues the series, it'll perhaps get better. I was thinking of a 3 out of 5 stars, but I forgave him and went with my current rating.
John Steiner has succeeded in creating a dynamic and exciting sci-fi series with FLIPSPACE. This book contains the first three tales, and I read it in two days. The characters hooked me right away, and the author has a smooth, accessible writing style that makes the stories move at a breakneck pace--even when describing mind-bending technology. I look forward to reading more in the series. Highly recommended!
