Xavier Lasher breaks out of prison with one goal: Claim his nurse, Lauren, as his.
Six years ago, I killed my father. Four years ago, my twin nearly killed himself. Now, I'm done waiting. I'm done serving time for a man the world doesn't miss. And I'm done pretending that Lauren isn't mine. I will have my freedom, and I will have my obsession. The only drug I'll ever need.
But when outside forces threaten to tear us apart, will she come back to me? And do I possess the courage to let my little Angel fly?
I don't know and I'm not eager to find out. So, I'll hold my Angel tight until I can feel her in my bones. Until her heart takes the shape of me.
If anyone tries to tear her from me, then the world better hope it's ready for another Lasher to stalk its streets. I will not lose her.
It's a dark romance, so make sure to check the trigger warnings.
Basically, Xavier's been locked up for the last six years, and has had enough of his situation. So, he breaks out and ends up kidnapping Lauren. She's the prison's nurse and has been his obsession for the past four years.
There's noncon in the beginning since Lauren wasn’t really a willing participant. What Xavier did to her was 🍇 but I think that's not unusual for dark romance. Then things changed, as Stockholm Syndrome finally set in. Lauren, for some reason started to realize she has feelings for him, and before I knew it, she was now on board with his plans for her.
This ends in a HFN and will continue in another novella set to come out in May 2025.

The long-awaited story of Zaine’s twin brother Xavier has arrived—not really long-awaited because Author Mae K. Knight is banging these books out, and I’m here for it. Xavier has been in prison, and he finally breaks mentally and out of prison, too, but he also has his sights on the nurse there, Lauren. He’s not letting her go.
Much like Zaine’s story, Xavier is more shmut than plot, and that’s what I was reading it for—all 126 pages. It was a good time!
If I thought Zaine was unhinged obsessed, he has nothing on Xavier.
Xavier has been in jail serving his time, but when he plans to get out, Lauren is coming with him whether she likes it or not.
Xavier is the twin bother of Zaine, and you gain a bit more of their back story in this book than the previous book. Though this will be a duet with Xavier could be a standalone in the series, I would recommend reading the first novella with Zaine. It really gives the whole picture on who Xavier is.
My minor complaint in the last book was that we didn't have a POV from Zaine. Well, in this book that is fixed!!! We get both POV's (first person), from Lauren and Xavier, and we get to see just how deep Lauren falls and the depth of Xavier's obsession.
Of course this has all the smut and spice you can ask for, and even with the copious amount of spice, I still say there is a fair bit of plot. I wasn't left wanting for either plot nor spice. 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
This does land on a minor cliff hanger, probably because it doesn't seem their story is quite finished yet. However it is not a dire cliff hanger, and I still am going to be reading the next book (you can count on it!).
I am really enjoying this series so far, and I can't wait for it to continue!

***I received an ARC for free, and all my opinions are my own.***
I adore Mae K. Knight. Anyone who has engaged with me and asked for dark romance recs knows that she is always the first person I recommend!
Escaping Xavier is the second book in Knight’s dark romance duet Lasher Brothers. The book is about 110 pages, but do not let this shorty fool you, it does not lack in depth or darkness.
What I liked about the book: 1. Like book 1, that cover is completely gorgeous!!! I was initially drawn to book 1 in the series because of the cover, and I have since read everything Mae has written. So, perfect example of why you SHOULD judge a book by its cover.
2. Xavier was 100%, certifiably INSANE!!!!! But I loved it. He was completely and totally obsessed and unhinged when it came to Lauren. Like…he may be the most insane MMC I’ve ever read. His possessive actions were fun to see play out on the page, especially IN FRONT OF PEOPLE! Knowing this is totally fiction and putting aside a lot of the things he did that were huge red flags, he was actually quite hilarious in how much he just did not give a fuck lol. He also quite cared for her. There were times when he would check in with her in a way I wasn’t expecting and it melted my cold dead heart a bit.
Lauren was Xavier’s nurse in prison, and she is fairly blunt and determined. I loved how she spoke her mind and how freaking hard she was. Even though she was adopted, she didn’t appear to have the same self-esteem and loneliness issues Zoe in book 1 had, so she definitely came across as a more forceful FMC, which was nice to see. Because she was a fierce FMC, we got to see her take control of Xavier in return a couple times, which definitely made the kidnapping/non-con aspects of the book come across less harsh.
“Fuck you, Xavier,” I yell back. I hope he kills me so I could haunt his ass.
- Hehe
Xander, Xavier’s cousin and go-to fixer, is such an interesting character to me. He seems very in control of his actions, very reserved. But what’s that saying I’m thinking of…“It’s always the quiet ones.” Yeah, I can’t wait to see Xander’s freak come out.
3. We got more background into the Lasher family, which was a nice addition to this book.
4. The spice was good, and we even got Xavier…putting on his clown face if you catch my drift. I can’t recall ever reading that in a book, and let me tell you, I ain’t mad at it!
5. Lastly, it wasn’t a large part of the book, but as someone who is also not a size 6, it was nice to see the body positivity in the book.
Make sure to check the trigger warnings below before reading, friends!
Another great dark read from this author. This is the second book in the Lasher Brothers duet, and Xavier -word of warning- is even more unhinged than his brother Zaine. Which of course I love!
He escapes from prison with one goal; keeping the pretty nurse who was so kind to him. What follows is a captivating and delicious tale of obsession and love in the darkest of times. I love how this book ties into the next as well (Claiming Sarah) and thank you to Mae for allowing me the opportunity to dive back into her darkly deprav£d world.
Please, please check content warnings for these stories! They are character driven smut and short reads but don't be misled into thinking that means there isn't a whole heap of disturbia going on... I'm looking forward to reading more from this world in the forthcoming books from the Lasher family vault.
I personally have chosen Zaine (Xaviers twin brother) as being the more unhinged brother thus far... until I met Xavier. That has definitely changed. Murder, Murder of your father at that, and kidnapping the nurse you are obsessed with... I'm a sucker for it all 🥵🥵🥵 Does lauren learn to love Xavier or die - because that's the only way Xavier is gonna let her go, right? 😉🤔 Knowing Xavier... anything is possible. So come find out and join the unhinged chaos these men can put you through. Absolutely can not get enough of them!!
As always, these books contain dark themes, and trigger warnings should be considered before continuing.
" For the dark girlies fantasizing about an unhinged murderer escaping from prison and kidnapping his obsession. This one is for you"
-omg the laser twins Zaine and Xavier 😍😍😍😍 - this is next level on a whole new twist and obsession that Xavier have - Xavier is in prison for killing his father but he escape aswell as kidnapping his nure Lauren because she is his new obsession - he tells her that the only way she can leave if she dies but that won't stop her becoming his - I adore this book so much -there is spice 🔥🔥🔥 - honestly can't wait for the next book that Mae writes as these are just one of my favourite dark romances books I have read
I’m just going to say it. I’d choose Xavier over Zaine. I’m a sucker for a dominant MMC who isn’t afraid to beg.
This is another short novella about the lasher family, and in this one we follow Xavier as he acts on his 4 year obsession with his prison nurse Lauren.
These MCs have SO much chemistry right from the get go. When it came time to prove how serious he was about Lauren, he let her take control.
If you like stories where the MMC kidn@ps his obsession, and uses their time together to show her what she’s worth, with an alpha-hole attitude and an FMC who is just trying to navigate her feelings, sudden change in lifestyle and a dominant alpha-hole. Then this short, spicy novella is for you.
Did I mention that the dominant gets on his hands and knees, and begs?
Yeah, and it was hot as f*ck.
Mae has an amazing ability to be able to wrap a whole novel of plot into a novella (and there’s a second book about Xavier and Lauren as well). Within these novellas you’ll find growing relationship dynamics, a mild conflict, and a resolution - and a lot of spice. The relationships between the FMC/MMCs are fast and HOT, but also effortless. Which is a hard dynamic to achieve. I can’t wait to see what happens next for the Lasher family.
I received this book as an ARC from the author for free, and this review is of my own opinions
A Fantastic sequel novella! I'm a little sad I have to wait for Keeping Xavier to see what happens next, but wow, what a ride this one was! Even though it was a short read, Mae didn't hold back on the plot, action, or spice. And can we just talk about Xavier? 😍 Xavier > Zaine (just saying 👀). This duet was actually my first taste of Mae's writing, and I'm absolutely hooked! Her style is amazing, so now I’m diving into her other books. Can’t wait! 💥
I needed a title containing a Name or a word beginning with X. I already read Surviving Zane. So I knew where this go. But it was so bad. I couldn't finish the book I only got to 52%.
And like the first book it was dark and smutty. But Xavier promised more kinky stuff, which would have come after I decided to dnf.
No recommendation from me, even if it's a short read.
Wow! Yet again, another brilliant shortie from Mae Knight - the second in the duet. Similar to the first in terms of circumstances of the MMC and FMCs first encounters but the story is definitely unique to Xavier. Really enjoyed the passion and desire that comes through for both parties despite the way they come together! Triggers exist for a reason, but dive in and enjoy!
My therapist knows I like to read and sometimes she asks "What are you reading at the moment?", because I sometimes have very good books to recommend. This is one of those books I would never recommend to her, but I for sure do recommend it to all you lovely people on the internet. (If you are into this kind of books of course. Always check the trigger warnings and take care of yourself <3).
Like all the other books I read from this author, and stories that are similar in dark vibes, it's a situation you don't want in real life. In book life however, it sometimes really heals the soul to get lost in freaky stuff. And that is something this author delivers. It's dark. It's twisted. It's "probably don't take your book to church to risk people asking about what you are reading". It's great. It's "I want more".
If you want all that I just mentioned, definitely take a look. I read this as an ARC, but trust me when I say that I typed this whole review voluntarily, because I had a great time.
If you like to take a look at more books I read, check out my Goodreads profile. I also sometimes post reviews on Instagram and talk about bookish stuff on Threads.
Well that was some spicy 🌶️ read. Definitely a smut read as the author claims and the plot is secondary to the heat but there is something to be said about wanting what you shouldn’t. If you just need a fast hot read this is it. Definitely read within a day but a nice hot buffer. Don’t forget about book 1 if you haven’t read that one yet check it out !! Both book involve nurses so there a connection between the brothers on that front. Check it out it’s a 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ for heat.
Mae K. Knight has done it again with "Escaping Xavier"! As someone who has fallen head over heels for her intense, gritty storytelling, I can confidently say this book is another masterpiece in her collection of dark romance. If you’re a fan of her work like I am, you already know to expect a whirlwind of emotions, powerful characters, and a plot that grabs you from the very first page—and trust me, "Escaping Xavier" delivers all of that and more.
The story centers around Xavier Lasher, a man who has just broken out of prison with one goal in mind: to claim Lauren, the nurse who’s been his obsession for six long years. From the very beginning, Xavier’s voice is raw and unrelenting. Mae K. Knight paints him as a deeply flawed yet magnetic character whose single-minded focus on Lauren is both terrifying and fascinating. His past is riddled with pain—from killing his father to watching his twin brother spiral—and it’s this emotional baggage that shapes his almost primal need for Lauren.
What I love about Knight’s storytelling is how she takes characters like Xavier, who should be irredeemable, and makes you understand, and even sympathize with, their motives. You’re not just reading about an ex-con chasing after his obsession—you’re seeing the complexity of his emotions, the layers of his love that blur into obsession, and the desperation that comes with trying to hold onto the one person who makes life bearable.
Lauren, on the other hand, is more than just Xavier’s fixation. She’s strong, resilient, and faces her own inner turmoil throughout the book. Knight doesn’t let her be a passive character, and that’s one of the many things I adore about her writing. Lauren has her own voice, her own choices to make, and you feel her struggle between fear and desire. The chemistry between her and Xavier is electric—it’s intense and unrelenting in the best possible way. You’ll find yourself holding your breath during their interactions, wondering which way their volatile relationship will swing next.
The suspense in this book is masterfully crafted. Knight has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat, not just with the romance but with the external forces that threaten to tear these two apart. Xavier may be free from prison, but that doesn’t mean he’s free from the dangers lurking around him. There’s a constant tension, a looming threat that makes you feel like something could go wrong at any moment.
Mae K. Knight doesn’t just write romance—she writes "experiences". "Escaping Xavier" is not for the faint of heart, and that’s exactly why I love it. It’s dark, twisted, and pushes boundaries, but at the core of it is a story about love in its most raw and unfiltered form. If you’re someone who enjoys characters with complicated pasts, high-stakes romance, and an obsessive love story that leaves you breathless, then this book is going to rock your world.
Knight’s writing style is addictive, her pacing flawless, and her ability to dive deep into her characters' minds is unmatched. I can’t get enough of the way she makes me feel so invested in every single word, every action, and every emotion. "Escaping Xavier" is a dark romance lover’s dream, and it’s safe to say that I’ll be thinking about Xavier and Lauren for a long time to come.
You’ve done it once again with this one . Not one but two books that had me captivated from start to finish. Like the first book I could not put this book down. This book was filled with the right amount of spice , the most descriptive and engaging scenes . You could feel the want and need of the obsession of the MMC Xavier over the Lauren the FMC the way his life depended on hers . I loved the way this book shifted from one point of view to the other allowing you to feel throughout the entire book what each character was really feeling. I can not wait to get my hands on the next novella to come.

Escaping Xavier is the second book in the Lasher Brother Duet, but it can easily be read as a standalone. I devoured this book in one sitting—it’s thrilling, spicy, and absolutely gripping.
At only about 130 pages, it’s unfortunately on the shorter side—I need more! ASAP!
The story revolves around Xavier, the MMC, who is serving a prison sentence for the murder of his father. Lauren, the FMC, works as a nurse in the same prison. From the moment Xavier lays eyes on Lauren, he becomes obsessed with her. When he gets the chance to escape, one thing is certain: he won’t leave Lauren behind.
From that point on, the story becomes intense—and undeniably spicy! Xavier is completely obsessed and unhinged when it comes to Lauren, pushing their dynamic to new extremes.
As the second book in the duet, we also learn more about the Lasher family and reconnect with familiar faces from the first book (Surviving Zaine). The writing style is smooth and engaging, making it easy to follow the story. Boredom? Not a chance!

Escaping Xavier, Final book in the Lasher Brothers duology. Was a 3.5 star rating for me. I enjoyed the second in series so much more.
Xavier a prisoner breaks free with the help of his cousin and hides away at his twin brother’s house.
Xavier is much darker than his brother, and this came to life in the bedroom. I enjoyed Xavier and Lauren's characters. They really came to life on the page for me. Xavier has a dark past and is fiercely loyal. Not taking no for an answer. Lauren a nurse at the prison is passionate about her career choice and treats Xavier as a person.
This book was enjoyable and fast-paced. It felt a little too instant love for me which I don’t enjoy and took away from the kidnapping trope. We also learn more about the characters brought up in book 1 as well as meet new characters (which also had more depth).
In this duology, we get some closure and more backstory about the twins childhood and why Xavier was sitting in prison.
This book largely takes place in one setting and has a dual POV of both Xavier and Sarah. I was more interested in Xavier’s POV.
The storyline also felt so much like the first as far as the romances and both females being nurses.
This novella follows Xavier (Zaine’s brother) and Lauren (his nurse).
This one like all of Mae’s other novellas has the perfect amount of plot and spice..
Xavier has been in prison for killing his father and when he breaks out he kidnapped his obsession of 4 years.. his nurse Lauren..
Xavier is unhinged, maybe even a little insane. He is completely obsessed with Lauren and he won’t let her go now, not even in death. Xavier like his brother is one MMC that you fall in love with but realistically shouldn’t. He may be crazy but he loves hard and fully.
Lauren is a very determined and blunt FMC. She spoke her mind and didn’t take any shit, she was even fierce enough to take control at times with her captor Xavier.
The chemistry between the two of them was HOT and so well written.
I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a morally grey unhinged MMC and a fierce badass FMC.
This along with book 1 in the duet and pretty much anything Mae writes will not disappoint you..
They are short, spicy and perfect if you want a fast read that check all your boxes.
Knowing that Xavier and Zaine are twins gave a hint of what was to come. These two definitely went to psycho school and graduated top of their class! While Zaine seemed to have an easier time of it with Zoe in the previous book, Lauren is not such a willing victim, and to tell you the truth, I thought Xavier was much darker than his brother. Perhaps it was the years he spent in jail, because I felt he was unnecessarily cruel to begin with, despite professing his feelings for Lauren. Please be aware that the smut is heavy on dubcon at times, although this fits the dark theme of the story. I enjoyed the duel POV this time around, which was a pet peeve of mine when reviewing the first book in the series. It was so much easier to sympathize with both characters when you knew what they were thinking. The only thing I can complain about this time is that the story ended much too soon, but judging by the sneak peek at the end, Lauren and Xavier’s story is far from over. I can’t wait! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If I thought Zaine was obsessed, Xavier is on another level. Just out of prison, he’s determined to take Lauren—his nurse and obsession for six years—with him, whether she likes it or not.
This novella explores more of Xavier and Zaine’s backstory, enriching the experience for those who read the first book. We finally get dual POVs from both Lauren and Xavier, revealing the depth of their emotions and Xavier’s intense fixation.
Knight skillfully balances plot and spice, delivering plenty of steamy moments alongside a strong narrative. Xavier is a flawed yet magnetic character, driven by a painful past that intensifies his need for Lauren. Meanwhile, Lauren is strong and resilient, navigating her own struggles amid their electric chemistry.
The suspense is palpable as external threats loom, keeping you on edge. If you love dark romance with complex characters and high stakes, *Escaping Xavier* is a must-read. And yes, the dominant MMC begging on his hands and knees? Totally hot. I can’t wait for the next chapter in the Lasher family saga!

Mae came back at it again with a completely unhinged twin brother to Daddy Zaine. Xavier is straight feral! He manages to escape prison after serving time for killing his father but he doesn’t leave without the love of his life, his nurse Lauren. His tendencies are similar to Zaine as they are twins but he is completely his own. I enjoyed that we got more backstory of the brothers. This is definitely a smutty read, lots and lots of spice. Xavier may be unhinged but his love is undeniable and he lures Lauren right in. She finds herself unable to get enough. I would definitely recommend this book, it’s a quick read and I enjoyed every minute of it. Mae left it open so we know there will be more to come with the Lasher family.
As always please check your trigger warnings and read responsibly.

This book was amazing!! I started it and couldn’t put it down !! The more I read the more I needed to know !! Xavier kidnapped and stalked Lauren in hopes of her living him one day !
Xavier was in prison for 20 years and the first two years for him where hard untill Lauren came in as a nurse from nursing school. She was there for 4 years untill Xavier was released and then Lauren’s world got turned upside down when he kidnapped her and kept her captive!
Lauren didn’t like it at first but when she was at the mercy of Xavier she couldn’t get enough it was the best she had ever had and she craved more !!
This book had the spice and the story was so good it kept me interested the whole time and needed to know what happened next !!
Xavier is Zaine's twin brother, and both have faced the tragedy of losing their father; Xavier even came close to losing his twin to suicide. Recently released from prison, Xavier seeks to reclaim the nurse he fell for while incarcerated, Lauren. He mirrors Zaine's approach with Zoe from the first book. This story is filled with unexpected surprises, twists, and plenty of spice. It truly has everything! It was an enjoyable read. Be sure to check out the first book featuring Zaine and the upcoming installment in this series, Claiming Sarah. Also, remember to look for trigger warnings before diving in!
Thank you to the author for the ARC! It was a great time as the first one was!
I loved the first book and I love this one. It's different and I am excited to continue on with Xavier's and Lauren's story.
They're short, they're dark, and they're spicy.
They're full of satisfying spicy times and the stories are well-fleshed out despite the short page count and so are the characters.
Both books in this series so far have been, short, sweet, to the point, but most of all, satisfying. And the characters decisions feel not just real, but plausible, like it isn't just happening to them, like they actively change to be able to make these decisions for themselves.
After 6 years Xavier was done waiting for his 20 year sentence to be over, the first 2 years were tough until Lauren his angel turned up. Needing a job out of nursing school Lauren ends up working at the prison for 4 years until Xavier turns her life upside-down. Xaviers getting out but he won't be leaving her behind. But will kidnapping her and holding her captive, ever give her the chance to be with him by choice? Is he willing to give her that freedom? Well written engaging, sizzling spicy scenes, dark themes, desires and more! A great addition to the series
This book was really good! I want to read more! I am immediately downloading the next. I enjoyed how Mae brought the characters together and gave a little more plot to the smut. BUT let me tell you the Smut is HOT. Check your Triggers because there are a lot of dark aspects to this. This type of book is not for everyone. But I ATE IT UP!!! Look past the negative of it and treat it like a love story and you will LOVE it too! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this and I am so thankful I did!!
