A potential hiccup where Episode Nagi is concerned started to pop up during these last two volumes for me. When the team focuses exclusively on the games with Nagi and not Reo, I don't feel as drawn to the overall story. The game going on right now is the most evenly matched one we've seen. Yet as the character roster grows, their quick backstories and gameplay just aren't appealing to me. Even detouring back to Reo with my personal favorite character design wise in Volume 5 felt very sudden. We'll see where I'm at next volume.
3.75 stars | I was like, why does this volume feel a little off? Then I realised there was a distinct lack of Reo content. Amazing how that gay disaster balances out Nagi’s story. Loved the bonus one-shot! Would love to see more pre-Blue Lock stories about these two.
ch 25 karasu backstory dropped in the spinoff?? ok well at least i'm getting it "he's aware he's mediocre" noooo baby karasu you're so special and in contrast to him, eita otoya lived his life by totally going with the flow. cue baby otoya. cue serial cheater otoya. "but to otoya, the calmly calculating karasu who won using his wits, was impossibly cool. and to karasu, otoya's 'what you see is what you get' personality meant that he didn't need to waste time discerning otoya's true feelings. he was comfortable to have him as a teammate. and above all, karasu and otoya, had exceptionally high play compatability." you simply cannot beat kaneshiro when it comes to relationship writing. tabieita CANON. "these two have neither passionate promises nor bitterly cold betrayals" no drama here "gaudy ninja" "flying crow" they are peak
ch 26 not that it's relevant here but kiyora really is the perfect fullback, amazing at defending, can dribble like a god, can send beautiful passes up the field. twister pass?? one might think i'm a hypocrite for criticizing unrealistic moves in bllk, but when it's attached to someone as cool as kiyora color me impressed. maybe i just hate isagi idk! backspin accelerating shot?? and HE SAT ON THE BENCH THE WHOLE OF THE NEL ARC??? knsr when i CATCH YOU! tell me why he's the most incredible player so far. and not to mention he forgot about him in the third selection. i'm not joking he's not in it at all, not even in the little pictures of who divided into a,b, and c. like what ???
ch 27 idc about himizu backstory. not on the bus, idgaf. "stop it princess. don't chase him! you'll break!" and THIS is one of my fav scenes from episode nagi bc that's chigiri one of his best friends! and he cares enough about him that despite losing, he still doesn't want chigiri to tear his ACL right then and there. contrast to isagi who tells chigiri to run faster and further makes the "isagi pushes chigiri to breaking" theory more interesting, when you consider the nagi isagi foils.
ch 28 now that i'm thinking about it. why did kiyora go to germany instead of spain? not my interpretation, but according to ego the bundesliga is about cold logic and spain is about talent and flair. kiyora literally breakdances and is so much like bachira he'd fit perfectly with barca but instead goes to bayern?? nagi decides to switch it up
I really loved the contrast between Barou's and Nagi's philosophies. Barou's is to face reality and Nagi's is to use imagination. Both work and also don't work during the match. It just depends on when it is used and how much of it should be used, which one of the main theses of Blue Lock; having a good balance of realism and imagination, ego and teamwork to make your dreams happen.
I also loved the bonus chapter at the end, where Nagi is aware of how crappy their parents are, and establishes at the beginning to not let what their parents did to them happen again in their own friendship. Reo should not meddle too much into Nagi's life and make him feel suffocated by expectations, and Nagi should not abandon Reo to his own devices completely. It's kind of ironic in hindsight considering what happens in the main manga...
One last thing though, I really adore the line where Nagi says "Neither of us has any siblings, and we were raised in completely opposite environments, we're different but we're kinda similar too." It warms my heart that Nagi was happy to finally find a friend. And the part where Nagi says "don't die before I do" to Reo because it was something his parents told him before he moved out shows how happy he is with the companionship and doesn't want to be alone anymore, despite what he thinks is good for him.
I find the way Kaneshiro writes these two very interesting. Their friendship is something that's sort of a double-edged sword to me. On one hand, Nagi's passion ignited because Reo invited him to play soccer, and Reo found a goal that he couldn't easily achieve through that. But it also means that Reo would say Nagi's skill as his ONLY way of achieving his goal -the World Cup- and Nagi would be too heavily dependant on Reo for everything, becoming satisfied and stunting his ego in soccer. Whether you see these two as platonic, 6 something else, I think their relationship is one that isn't very healthy.... as of yet.
I don’t want this spinoff to end… it would be sick if it continued all the way until the end of the main series. I love Nagi’s perspective more than Isagi’s, especially his relationship with Reo!
My favorite of the series so far! Loving the action with the soccer game and the backstory! Wish I had volume seven ready but I’ve gotta wait on Libby for it to arrive. 😜
