In The Forager, The Girl lives with her family in a village surrounded by abandoned houses. Drawn by curiosity, she ventures deeper, unaware of the danger lurking across the lake. Who lights the fires on the distant shore, and why? - Fortress DuBarry, src
What is written here is okay. It's not flawless, but as the prologue to something, it works.
But I have to review this as a book. It's only 4 pages long. It's not a short story, it's a piece of something else. As published, it's one of five pieces, each only 3-4 pages long. I have little confidence that even all together those form a complete thing.
This is inexplicable. I had a non-review when this was up for a Goodreads Giveaway and had a brief discussion with the author about how weird this was. She did not disagree. Now many months later, there has been every opportunity to merge the five "books" into one, or take them out of print, or do anything to make it remotely fit any kind of acceptable standard.
I won this in a Giveaways and decided I should finally read it. Um, excuse me? It's 4 pages. That's not a book. Heck, it's not even a short story. I'm not sure why it was published.
I won this in a giveaway and by the end I was adding the rest of the "series" to my tbr. Though I was a little confused at the end, it was not in a frustrated way, it was more in a "Ehy isn't there more, I need more" kind of way.
JUST ENOUGH TO LEAVE YOU WANTING MORE. This book is only 4 pages but gives you just enough to want more. It grabs your attention and makes you question what is happening. A sickly girl, mysterious woods, and a disappearing family. What happened? Who has the bonfire? Where did the bones come from? Dark and mysterious!
A four (4) page book? It is part of a series of (presumably) similarly short books. This first book has an intriguing "hook" but offers absolutely no details. I won this book in a giveaway, but seriously doubt that I would spend money on it or any other books in the series.
