Rate this book

Marta Altés is an award-winning author and illustrator. She studied graphic design in Barcelona and after working there as a graphic designer for almost five years, decided to pursue her interest for illustration that she had since she was a child. Marta moved to the UK to study for an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, and graduated in 2011.

Since then she has seen her books translated into over 30 languages, she has taught as a part time lecturer in the MA where she studied, and has done lots of workshops with little artists around the world.

Marta lives in London with her partner, her baby daughter and Little Sam the dog. She always tries to have a positive and funny vision about life and to get a smile from who is looking at her drawings or reading her stories is what she likes the most about illustration.

I'd like to begin this review by pointing out that when I input No! by Marta Altes into the goodreads bookfinding-ometer the closest match it could find was Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. Something is clearly amiss. Or I've totally underestimated the message and cultural zeitgeist of No!

Dogs are great. They are the best of all mammals. They appear in all shapes and sizes and have agreed to be our best friends and stick by us despite the fact that they get lips tits and hooves in gravy from a can for dinner every night. Now that is true friendship! One day soon I intend to dominate the world with the help of an army of tiny hounds, the leader of which will be a French Bulldog called Thierry Henry.

No! is a dog who likes to dog things. He does them because he thinks he is being good and helpful but in reality he's just making a mess. He warms the bed (and makes them all muddy), he hunts for treasure in the garden (digs up the lawn), takes in the laundry (tears clothes from the washing line). His real name is Spike but he hears the word No! so often that he comes to believe it's his name. This is a lot like how my mum and dad used to call my sister Bonus, and she thought it was her name for a while.

This is also a book for Kitty. I hopes she appreciates the irony of me buying her dog books.

Ilustracije su jednostavne i privlačne.

This book is about a dog that thinks his name is No because his family says it to him so much, but since he thinks that's his name, he thinks his family loves him so much, and he works very hard to be good. This is a very cute book that is funny and will make kids laugh, and also learn how to read and spell the word 'no', since it says it so much in the book and is written in big letters. This book has won the Moonbeam Children's Book Award, and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Award. I think this would be a fun read aloud book or guided reading book because it doesn't have many words, and the ones it does have are fairly simple, plus it has quite a few repeated words, and pictures that will help with words the students don't know.

¡No!

¿o no?

This is one of my 4-year old's favorite books. She thinks it's hilarious. I love how it makes her laugh. Watching her read it with her grandpa is one of my favorite memories of seeing the two of them together.

Unlike some children's books, this one feels okay to read over and over and over for me as an adult too. The brief text captures the enthusiastic optimism of many dogs.

My 5-year-old daughter is way into this story and the author. She is reading this story book over and over again.
