❝ He swore he wouldn’t fall. She never expected to want him to. ❞
OLIVIA
Boxing Day was supposed to be spent with my children. Instead, I was alone in a hotel bar, drowning in heartbreak while my ex played happy families with his new girlfriend. And then he walked in.
Dr. Ryan Simmonds—arrogant, guarded, and too damn gorgeous for his own good.
He was supposed to be a one-night escape, nothing more. ✔ Not my sister’s heart surgeon. ✔ Not the man making my children laugh. ✔ And definitely not someone I could fall for when my world is already crumbling.
RYAN
I don’t get involved. Not after my fiancée left me for my brother.
But Olivia Brown is a complication I never saw coming. ✔ She’s fierce, exhausted, and willing to fight the world for her sister. ✔ She’s the one woman I shouldn’t want. ✔ And she’s breaking down every wall I’ve built.
Her sister’s failing heart means I’m her only hope. But Olivia deserves more than a man who can’t afford to love her.
Now I have to make an impossible Be the surgeon who saves her sister… or the man who won’t break her heart.
🔥 A heart-wrenching, slow-burn romance about love, fate, and impossible choices. 📖Perfect for fans of Emily Henry, Colleen Hoover, and Abby Jimenez.
Romance without limits! A book hoarder and coffee addict at heart Anna's main existence in life is to create beautiful words about exquisitely flawed characters. She's a slow burn Princess and all about working for that happy ever after, but she guarantees when you get it, you'll fall so hard you might never want to surface again. Be prepared to oooh and aaah and squeal with delight as Anna takes you on a journey you are unlikely to forget. Anna lives at in Surrey, the UK, with her husband and three children. She happiest writing (thinking of ways to make you swoon), drinking coffee and snuggling up on the sofa in the evenings for a binge of her favourite shows or reading in bed. She loves to chat with her readers on social media so if you love the words come and find her, she sure loves to talk.
A dramatic single parent romance where two broken people come together unexpectedly and against all odds, finding love and healing when they never expected it.
This is the second book in The Last Ever series, and a follow on from the amazing The Last Kiss. It’s the story of Olivia, who is the sister of Jules, heroine from The Last Kiss. This story takes place on the same timeline as the first book, and though you can read this book as a standalone, note that it contains spoilers for the first book, so if you’re planning on reading The Last Kiss (and you absolutely should!), read these in order.
Separated single mother, Olivia’s life is falling apart when she meets a stranger in a bar who invites her to dinner and steals her heart. She’s not in a place where she can be starting a relationship, so they part ways at the end of the night thinking they’ll never see each other again. And then Ryan turns out to be Olivia’s sister’s heart surgeon.
Ryan is a broody surgeon who is married to his job since his fiancée left him for his brother. He doesn’t want a relationship, and he definitely doesn’t want to get involved with a single mother, but there’s something about Olivia that draws him in. He can’t stop thinking about her, he can see that she’s struggling, and he wants to help her, and despite his best intentions, he can’t stay away.
Ryan and Olivia are in a complicated situation. She’s a hot mess, he’s determined to be alone, and they both have family issues to deal with. Bizarrely, the fact that he is her sister’s surgeon (and the person deciding whether she goes on the heart transplant list) really doesn’t factor. I thought it would be a major ethical sticking point to them being together, but it’s not. It’s more their personal issues that cause the drama.
There is quite a bit of push and pull, mostly coming from Ryan as he battles his feelings, and I enjoyed seeing him wrestle with his emotions. When he finally gives in and embraces all that he’s feeling, it’s sexy and it’s sweet, and I liked seeing him step into Olivia’s life and be there for her and her kids.
“I’ve been ready for you since the moment we met.”
But unlike the first book in the series, in this one, for me, the feels weren’t there.
Olivia had some great moments but I didn’t warm to her as much as I wanted. She seemed so helpless. And for somebody who is so stressed and devastated over her sister’s illness, she doesn’t really do anything to help. Given how unwell Jules was, and how close the sisters are, I thought Jules would appear in the book more, but she sort of just exists on the periphery until those final chapters. And it’s those chapters which finally brought the emotion. And though I loved seeing Ryan’s walls come down, I thought there were some questionable choices when it came to how his character was written and how he reacted to falling for Olivia.
The main issue with this book for me was that it all just felt a bit disjointed – like the book was written in pieces, bits were moved around, and things didn’t make sense or contradicted other parts of the story. I found myself questioning and flicking back, and though I can usually overlook things like that, it happened a lot and I found it distracting. I did read an ARC of this book, and wondered if it was an early draft, so I bought the book on release to check the published version and those issues were still there. It just needs an edit for continuity.
So yeah, it wasn’t what I was expecting, but I did like the story. I liked seeing Ryan and Olivia come together, and their story finishes in a good place.
2.5 stars.
An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the author for an honest review.
The Last Time by Anna Bloom is book two in her The Last Ever Series. In The Last Kiss we followed Jules as she battled her illness and fell in love with Henri. Now we have her sister Olivia and her unforeseen relationship with Ryan. Fate certainly has a big hand in this couple’s love story as they turn out to be exactly what the other needed and came along just at the right time. This is a slow burn romance between a single mum and a cardiac surgeon. An opposites attract, grumpy / sunshine, forbidden story between two broken hearted people who have built their walls so high that neither expect to get another chance at finding love. An angst filled tale that runs along the same timeline as the first book so we get to experience all the emotion and medical drama with Jules from Olivia’s POV.
It is Boxing Day and Olivia is struggling as her children are spending it with her ex husband. They separated after he admitted an affair with his secretary and ever since she has been trying to juggle single parenthood, a job and looking after her sister. She has gone to a hotel for a drink when a handsome stranger sits next to her at the bar. They exchange how badly life is currently treating them and who is having the worse day. Ryan Simmonds is a heart surgeon who has recently returned to London after living and working in New York for eight years. His hopes for a fresh start are going badly as his new flat is causing him problems. His chance encounter with Olivia is a refreshing break after a long shift so he invites her to dinner.
Right from the start you can feel the connection and chemistry between them but after an unforgettable kiss they say goodbye. They are both still thinking about the other weeks later but neither have the time for a relationship. Fate has other ideas because when Olivia accompanies Jules to a hospital appointment, it turns out Ryan is her sister’s heart surgeon. They are surprised to see each other and the temptation to meet up again is strong. They both know they have issues to be addressed and there’s a conflict of interest for Ryan but their friendship grows and slowly develops into a relationship.
Little Paige and Lenny are adorable and I really liked Charlie, her best friend. It was lovely how Ryan realises he could be there for her and her children, and how she has his back when a family obligation has to be faced. They have plenty of ups and downs along the way plus all the emotions involved with her sister’s illness. Olivia has to learn to trust a man again and poor Ryan has some difficult decisions to make. With the heartbreak and betrayal they have both been through, can they find the kind of love they both deserve.
Anna Bloom is one of my favourite authors. I’ve read every story she has published, and especially as it has been some time since she last published a book, I couldn’t have been happier to have more of her words to devour - another story to fall in love with.
You may remember Jules Brown in The Last Kiss (if you haven’t read this story then please do and have tissues at hand), well, The Last Time is her sister Olivia’s story and just so you are prepared yes, you’ll need more tissues!
I absolutely loved this story. I’ve obviously witnessed what Jules goes through as she told us her side of her journey in The Last Kiss and so it was interesting to learn Olivia’s thoughts and emotions regarding these events too. In addition, Liv’s story also shares with us her relationships with her family, friends and love interests, and I have to say there are some very special moments throughout the narrative that warmed my heart.
It appears that Ms. Bloom has created another male lead to steal our hearts. Ryan Simmonds. It only takes the mention of his name for my heart to skip a beat. If I didn’t love Liv as much as I do and believe that she deserves someone like Ryan I would be so jealous of her. I was rooting for them from the moment they set eyes upon each other. Their journey has some obstacles to overcome, and although I loved witnessing them both take some risks, I especially loved seeing Ryan find his place in a world he never expected to be in and it be perfect there too. He’s totally swoon worthy!!
I highly recommend The Last Time to you to read. Once again, this author has penned an emotional story that will tug at your heart strings. She mentions that Charlie’s story is on the cards which I believe is coming next. I’m already excited for this!!
The two stars are because I love single mum books, especially those where the romantic male interest falls in love with the kids too. I love that trope because it’s my life.
The story itself works. I read the first book about Olivia’s sister, Jules, and her heart condition - I gave it 5 stars. I liked the meet cute in both stories. Story arc, and character arcs are ok.
What I can’t bear, is inconsistencies. A whole section of the book is about a four year old’s birthday party and then in a subsequent chapter the mother of said child tells her lawyer that’s she’s three. I presume the birthday chapter was added later to try give more interaction between Paige (the child) and Ryan (the love interest), but why wasn’t it picked up by the editor or beta readers.
A man who is described as having pale, silvery blonde hair, suddenly has perfectly styled dark hair? A child is scooped up, but then is still upstairs shouting while the parent who scoops him up is downstairs in the kitchen. There were other bloopers but these three had my eyes rolling and made me sad for the author, other people should have had her back.
Paige is a child, and I respect that her voice should reflect that she’s a child, but mummwie and auntwie - ehhhhh? I can understand adding a W in some words, like pwease because some little ones struggle with the letter L, but the random W in mummy, when they already can make the mum sound and the ee sound doesn’t make sense. Maybe it was based on the author’s own child and they did say it like that - in which case, I will stand corrected and go sit in the naughty corner. I feel like I’m being petty, so I’m going to stop now.
In summary, not a bad story, likeable characters, let down by very poor editing and strange authorial decisions.

Well, all I can say is 4 years was definitely worth the wait. This is Olivia and Ryan's story. It's a story that runs parallel to Jules and Henri's and one that is equally as heart breaking. Ryan plays an important role in Jules' story and the Boxing day he meets Olivia. None of them realised just how huge it would be.
This is a heartbreaking story that you will find hard not to get emotional reading. Not only with what is happening with Olivia's sister but also how Olivia's life has fallen apart and she was trying to juggle and support, her sister, deal with her small children alone meaning she failed to care for herself.
I can't explain just how much this book moved me, and I spent the last 20% of this book in tears. I can't imagine being in Olivia's shoes and not breaking. I have sisters, and it doesn't bear thinking about. And to think that the man she letting into her life. Literally has her sisters life in her hands.
This book is fantastic and I really couldn't recommend it anymore. Be warned, your heart will break, and I dare you not to cry. As I said, it was so worth the wait.

Wow! It’s been nearly four years since The Last Kiss came out which I adored, and now we have Jules’ sister, Olivia’s story and I loved it!
”…the abandoned woman and the man who doesn’t do love.”
We meet Olivia and Ryan in a hotel bar on Boxing Day and their connection and attraction is obvious from the start but, aside from an unforgettable kiss, they part ways - only to meet again when she accompanies Jules to meet her heart surgeon.
Olivia is struggling hard juggling her separation, her children and her sick sister. There’s no room for a budding romance. Ryan is back in England after an eight-year absence - he’s finally back out of duty but still harbours the hurts from the betrayal that drove him abroad.
”I've been ready for you since the moment we met.”
Gosh, these two! Life had pummelled hard at Olivia and, at some point, something had to give. I loved that Ryan wanted to stand by her, hold her, and be there for her. By the same token, she was equally there for him in his time of need. I was riveted by his preoccupation with and desire for her. I adored the rapport he built with her kids, too.
This story was such a rewarding read about two people who found each other when neither were looking and learning to trust and love again. It was humorous, heartbreaking, sexy and swoony. Thoroughly recommend.
Anna Bloom’s back with the second book from The Last Ever series, be warned it’s a heart wrenching, page turner of a read.
This is Olivia and Ryan’s story, which runs parallel to Jules and Henri’s. Whilst her ex plays happy families with their children and his new girlfriend on Boxing Day, Olivia sits alone at a hotel bar when in walks Ryan, and it’s clear there's a connection between them. The pair then meet again when Olivia accompanies Jules to the doctors, and it turns out that the heart surgeon is none other than Ryan himself. What ensues is an emotional, heartbreaking read following the goings on with Olivia’s sister as well as Olivia herself as she juggles family life, dealing with her small children alone, failing to care for herself in the process.
The Last Time is a well written slow burn, emotional roller coaster of a read. Family, friendship, heartbreak and humor leads to an entertaining, heartwrenching, addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
This is sort of a continuation of the 1st book. Probably didn’t need to be as long as it was but a good book anyway. Jules in in it quite a bite but the story is about Olivia’s life. Olivia is Jules sister with the failing heart. Olivia’s husband cheated on her after 5 years of marriage. They have 2 small kids that the father doesn’t seem to have time for. Olivia meets Ryan in a bar and she’s almost spends the night but decides not too. Surprise, Ryan is Jules new heart surgeon. Ryan & Olivia start to be together and Julie’s goes to France to be w/Henri. Julie’s is deteriorating quickly but a match for her heart has been found, but the recipient’s family won’t make a decision on donation. The one thing I’m not thrilled about is how Ryan is trying to have them make a decision when they are not ready. Didn’t like that he ghosted her while Jules was dying in the hospital, but it was explained a bit later. Jules gets her heart transplant and has a great recovery, and moved on with Henri. Olivia and Ryan end up together in the end, and get there happily ever after.

I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Anna Bloom seriously knows how to write an emotional, heart wrenching love story. So many pieces come together after reading The Last Kiss and the events at the end of the book. Olivia's life was falling apart in all aspects when she met Ryan. But their meeting was fate. Their chemistry was so heartwarming. Ryan was Olivia's savior. I loved how everything came together. And seeing those scenes with Henri and Jules again, broke my freaking heart so much! Another favorite to add to my list of Anna Bloom's books.
Are you ready for an emotional rollercoaster that’ll have you reaching for the tissues time and time again? The Last Time by Anna Bloom is a heart-wrenching slow burn that will tear your heart open, only to piece it back together with love, healing, and the kind of connection that lingers long after the final page.
Olivia and Ryan’s story is a long time coming—and every moment, every tear, every emotion was so worth the wait. Their journey is raw and deeply moving, layered with pain, growth, and ultimately, redemption. This isn’t just a second-chance romance—it’s a second chance at life, and Bloom handles it with the care and sensitivity of a true storyteller.
And Ryan? Calling him a “book boyfriend” doesn’t even come close. That word doesn’t feel mature enough for the man he is. He’s the kind of emotionally intelligent, fiercely loyal, quietly strong hero that ruins you for all others. He’s not the cherry on top—he’s the whole damn cake.
The Last Time is book two in The Last Ever Series, and it delivers every bit of the emotional depth and powerful storytelling readers expect from Anna Bloom. If you’re looking for a romance that stays with you, that feels real in every heartbeat and breakdown—this one’s for you. Grab your tissues and dive in.
When you pick up this book, have tissues at the ready, and be prepared to go on an emotional rollercoaster. This is Olivia and Ryan's slow-burn heartwrenching story.
Olivia is going through a bitter divorce and spending boxing day without her kids. When she meets Ryan in a hotel bar, they hit it off immediately, but after sharing a meal, they go their separate ways. Weeks later, they meet again when Olivia discovers Ryan is her sisters heart surgeon. There is a sizzling chemistry between them, but can they really let it go any further.
This book broke me, but it also fixed me, and I can not recommend it enough.
Loved Jules’ story (book 1) but this was painful to read.
Random irritations:
Olivia was exhausting to read about and I dreaded her chapters. No idea what the MMC saw in her as she was an utter mess and constantly described by herself and others as looking tired/awful/drained - fitting I suppose as it was how I felt every time I read her pov. I cringed every time her daughter spoke - the phonetic mis pronouncing was relentless and difficult to read - took me out of the story trying to hear her voice. She was on page far too much (pardon the pun) The MMC’s name annoyed me - Ryan was a strange choice for a British upper class doctor. Story dragged and after 50%, skimmed to the end.
Disappointed as waited a loooong time for this sequel but it really was a tiring read.
