Disclaimer: Bill Qian, one of the authors of Lessons Learned, is a friend of mine. My positive views may reflect this connection, though I’ve done my best to provide an objective perspective for potential readers.

Lessons Learned offers an insightful, chronological journey through the crypto industry's growth, challenges, and recurring patterns. From Bitcoin's beginnings to the rise of DeFi, NFTs, and Web3 gaming, the authors structure each chapter with a main narrative, embedded side stories from industry entrepreneurs, and a summarization that distills key patterns and trends. This layered approach grounds the reader in both practical insights and industry-wide cycles, helping newcomers and experienced readers alike gain a balanced perspective.

In comparison, Chris Dixon’s Read Write Own is more philosophical, focused on how Web3 could overcome the systemic flaws of Web2 by fostering decentralized, financially sustainable networks. Dixon’s writing explores the ideological underpinnings of Web3’s potential, aiming to redeem the internet as a decentralized space. While his solo authorship brings a polished narrative, Lessons Learned adds value in its detailed historical narrative and practical guidance. Together, these books serve different but complementary purposes: Dixon’s provides a theoretical foundation, while Qian, Piech, and Alizadeh deliver a practical roadmap for understanding and navigating the crypto industry.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to see if Bill's next book will build on the patterns introduced in Lessons Learned and deliver even deeper insights. While this book attempts to address why and how these trends emerged, I believe Bill has the potential to provide both macro-level insights and a deeper exploration in his next work. By implementing his special gift in mastering historical knowledge and recognizing related patterns that repeat in human civilization, he can enlighten readers about what is happening. Such a future book could help readers recognize patterns and anticipate trends, offering guidance not just on the past but on the road ahead.

In short, both books are valuable to those curious about the crypto space. Lessons Learned and Read Write Own together offer a balanced, multifaceted view of Web3’s landscape, providing foundational insights for newcomers and meaningful takeaways for industry builders alike.
